Lunch portion - General Tso's Chicken
    Stephen P.

For context, I been to pretty much every Chinese food restaurant in the Ballantyne area on my quest to find a quick and delicious take out lunch option for those times when I am craving some General Tso's, and I realized that it had been a while since I gave Asian One a shot, so I figured what better time than the present right? Overall, this place isn't good, isn't bad, it is just kinda eh, as the portions aren't that large and the prices aren't a great value and nothing really stands out at all. Again, it is not bad if you are in the area and need a quick fix, but even though it is less than 5 minutes away, I have no problem driving by it on the way to other places that provide more flavor, larger portions and a better value.

    Sesame Chicken Dinner Special

I was quite confused when I picked up my to-go order, but the food portion size and taste were good. When I arrived, I noticed that there was a bag of food on the table closest to the door, as well as a bag of food next to the cash register. They keep a makeshift barricade near the front entrance that is about 20 feet away from the cash register so they definitely maintain social distancing to the max between staff and customers. I was told multiple times that I was #2. I never understood what that meant since I did not order menu item #2, nor did my receipt indicate that I was #2 (when I checked it later). I did, however, order 2 items. Still, I was very confused when my payment was collected and I was not handed any food. I thought I would be receiving the bag that was sitting by the cash register. Eventually, I was told that the bag on the table closest to me was "#2" and therefore mine. Once I opened my container of food, I realized that my Sesame Chicken (dinner special, $8.89, served with fried rice and egg roll) was covered in a red-orange sauce that strongly resembled sweet and sour sauce. Needless to say, I was confused all over again. Clearly, it had sesame seeds too so surely, it had to be the correct order, but when I ordered this dish from other restaurants in the past, it always came in a brown sauce. Still, I enjoyed my meal, even though it tasted more like sweet and sour chicken.

I really wanted to give them a higher score because honestly they make the best Asian food in Charlotte. They also deliver so that's nice too! It's fairly priced and it's really good. I didn't want to post this either, but this is the second time this has happened to us, and we've only eaten here 3 times and someone else posted about it previously as well. Everything is great about this place except I have now found a bug in my food, twice. The first time I found a giant mosquito in my shrimp lo mein and now I have found a fly in my sesame chicken. I understand this happening occasionally, but two times, and to someone else? I don't know if they're leaving the doors open or what, maybe consider a screen door or something if they need it open for fresh air. I still will probably continue to order my Chinese from here though because it is really good, but the bug problem is disgusting.

Just an ordinary Chinese place. Same menu as all the other Chinese fast food places that get supplied by big business. Fast but semi ok.

The egg rolls and spring rolls tasted like they need to change their frying oil. Good sesame chicken, fast delivery.

Always my favorite place to go when I start to miss home and need some nostalgia and that home cooked meal feeling. My other favorite (not pictured) includes: Mango or watermelon jasmine tea, beef stew with rice, dan dan noodles, tornado potato, honestly any of the appetizer/street foods, home-made soy milk. I actually loved the bright, comfy vibe of the place. Thought it could use a bit louder music to fill the space. I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles, Rainbow Dumplings and this Mango Jasmine Tea drink...and they were all pretty good. Still, I was surprised how my bill totaled about 35 bucks. Normally, I'm not too surprised by the pricing (even for lunch), but it felt a bit high...given that everything was served on paper and plastic wares. I did like how they have these DIY take-home plastic wares accessible and ready to go...so some points for that! Overall, it's just a casual eatery...not a full scale restaurant. I prefer full scale service, complete with nicely plated presentations, but this type of DIY eatery is just something that's becoming more common.

It was pushing 97 degrees outside, and after a long afternoon of computer work and errands, I finally stopped in for the crispy scallion chicken and pan-fried dumplings. Huge portions. Fair prices. Friendly people. Consistently solid food every single time. The best part today honestly might have been the air conditioning. They've got a cool, comfortable space to wait while your order is prepared, which felt amazing after baking outside all day. I forgot to take food photos because I was hungry and ready to get home, but trust me, they pack these takeout containers like a game of Jenga. Nothing spills. Nothing shifts. Everything is packed tight and thoughtfully. Only tiny downside: the dumpling sauce goes into the same container as the hot dumplings, so by the time I got home, it had softened the bottom a bit. Still, the dumpling wrappers are thick and crispy enough to survive the trip. Into the air fryer later they go. One warning: the parking lot can be chaotic since it sits right off busy Providence Road. Just be patient. Cars are constantly pulling in, backing out, blocking entrances, and today people were absolutely treating red lights like suggestions. Saw it multiple times, including a bus cutting across traffic when I had the right-of-way. Charlotte drivers... please relax a little. That said, the food made the trip worth it. Taipei Express is one of those dependable local spots that always comes through when you need a solid meal without spending a fortune. Life is too short to not eat well. Get out there and eat your way through Charlotte.

Unfortunately, the actual experience was nothing like the hype. First, parking is a nightmare. I would seriously add an extra 20-30 minutes just to find a spot. Once we finally made it inside, we waited another 30 minutes to be seated. After sitting down, it took close to another 30 minutes before anyone came to take our order, and then roughly another 30 minutes for the food to arrive. So you're potentially looking at well over an hour and a half of waiting and inconvenience before you really get to eat. And the dim sum cart that brought us there in the first place? We never saw one. They did have a dim sum menu that we could order from, but that was not the experience being promoted in the videos we had seen. The food itself was just okay. Nothing was terrible, but nothing justified the hype or the amount of time and hassle involved. If you've had good dim sum in places like New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, or San Francisco, this isn't remotely in the same league. Between the parking, the long waits, slow service, missing dim sum cart, and average food, I genuinely don't understand the crowds. Hard pass for us. Once and done.

It is busy enough that plenty of other people had also called in for takeout. The price was higher than I thought it would be by a significant margin; I thought something was off but then rechecking their menu I saw it was indeed $20 for a vegetable entree. On the upside, they did offer brown rice at no extra charge. Still, I'll get three meals out of it and as someone who eats a lot of takeout, this was not a great value. In terms of quality, I was thrilled to find that they offered a stir-fried okra dish. This is a ubiquitous Indian dish, and of course okra is common throughout the tropics globally, but I'd never seen this offered at a Chinese restaurant before. And the rapid cooking technique typical of the cuisine produced a delightfully crisp vegetable, which went great with a black bean sauce and some very hot dried chilis. On the other hand, their interpretation of ma po tofu had some fermented broad beans but minimal vegetables (sometimes you get mushrooms or peas or at least some leeks or something) and no numbing sensation. They had a bean curd roll dish that I enjoyed, and some quality dumplings. Overall, not huge portions and a mix of okay to great quality.
