I am so happy that I discovered this spot! We went in the mid-afternoon and they did not have a ton left, but still a great selection. I was lucky to get the last sourdough loaf, which was amazing! Shared one cookie with my coworker, we both are unimpressed and for the price point, will sure not give it another try. Note there are no price anywhere in their bakery display or labeling of the contents. We have to second guess it was some sort of sugar cookies with jam. Asking the worker, they seem to be hesitant of exactly what it was but did assure us that it was delicious. The oat latte I got was not any good, coffee was lacking and mellow taste of oat was more dominant. Because they hid the prices and I wasn't paying attention, it wasn't until it was too late that I saw the price for the one chocolate chip cookie (which was not large by any means) - $10. If this was the best cookie of my entire life, I still would have been outraged at this price. As if that wasn't bad enough, the cookie ended up being one of the worst I've ever tasted, and all three of us agreed it had an off flavor. My wife and her friend said the tea cookies were also pretty bad, so we ended up throwing the rest out and I didn't bother trying them. I honestly don't understand how a business like this is still operating in the middle of a city with such amazing food that caters to all dietary restrictions. I found this lovely place yesterday while walking through Seattle on my first day in the city. I was overjoyed to find an allergen, free bakery, especially since I can't do gluten. There's so many lovely options. I went with a slice of banana bread, which a lovely lady was kind enough to warm up for me, making it extra scrumptious. Then I had something that had dark chocolate, raspberry, and toasted coconut flakes, which was also yummy! The prices were very fair. I didn't feel like I was being gouge for everything I was worth like I do with the most commercial brands. The atmosphere was very cozy and warm. The staff were prepping for some kind of festival or event and there weren't a ton of customers, but I still got to enjoy myself and have some savory treats. I definitely hope to come back again when I'm in town! This was a very pleasant fine, and will make a wonderful memory. read more

Note: I've only gotten their goods at the U District Farmer's Market (they are there every other week, near the food stalls at the end). Hands down the best gluten-free bread I've ever had. It's impressive how their foods contain none of the most common allergens. The pastries taste decent, but I find most of it tasteless. I tried every flavored tea cookie and the only ones that got a speck of taste were the lavender and early gray. The cookies were surpassingly soft but it also had a weird taste and it felt like biting down on a sugar cube. Would I get it again? Definitely. They may not be the best cookies in the world but it's simplicity and uniqueness is enough to crave more. Except, I wouldn't pay $1.50 a piece and it's mainly the price that's preventing me from coming back. There's minimum seating and the inside is dim, so take out is more common. Such a cute spot! I felt welcomed the moment I walked in, and the staff smiled at me. I was able to indulge in my first ever gluten free moon cake (they had ube and red bean flavor available), and snack on some delightful tea cookies. The woman/BIPOC owner has a daughter that grew up with a wide array of allergies, which inspired her to open this bakery/restaurant. It seems like many of the gluten free bakeries around the city are slowly closing their doors and I'm so happy that Askatu has been open through everything and still around. Their staff is so friendly and amazing. They will brighten anybody's day. Plus all the treats are really tasty, and if you are on any kind of allergen diet, you know that sometimes foods that don't have wheat, egg, dairy, etc. can be not-great. I've loved everything I've tried at Askatu. Even the sandwiches are fantastic! I'd go so much more if they were closer to me, but I just don't go downtown that much anymore (hi from west seattle island, anyone?). We're vegan, and I've been looking to get vegan mooncakes, so I contacted them via IG, and they said that during the mooncake season they generally have them available. So we stopped by. That day they had ube mooncakes. These are small Asian pastries -- maybe 4-inches wide? Full disclosure, I have never had these before, but these things were AMAZING. Just absolutely AMAZING. I figured they would be good (how can pastries NOT be good?), but these were full of flavor. My wife, who is much more critical than I am as far as baked goods go, also commented how great they are. We ate at the bakery. The bakery is a little hole in the wall. A handful of tables in various states of operability. It's a fun vibe -- think dive bar meets bakery. The person working the counter was super friendly. The drinks are average. My wife had a latte and I had a matcha tea. They're not bad mind you, just not anything memorable. Value: for two mooncakes, a latte, and a matcha tea, it came to just under $40 with 25% tip. The mooncakes themselves were $10 each. We live in Seattle, so I expect things to be expensive, but even I thought this was on the high side. YMMV. One thing that detracts is that they have a transparent shower curtain between you and the cash register, with a giant hole cut out. Presumably this was installed in early pandemic days, and frankly, knowing what is known now about Covid, this eyesore just should be removed. It doesn't extend all the way to the ceiling (there's at least a four or five foot gap above); there's a giant hole cut out in the middle so you can access the credit card terminal; etc. Therefore, there's no way it does anything to spread transmission of Covid. I respect people who are concerned about transmission, but it doesn't help anyone to have such ineffective measures. Overall, I like this place. read more

I was hesitant to post, having gotten a Too Good 2 Go bag and being "meh" with the offerings, but I feel like some things need to be said. First off, I am a person without allergies, and I recognize this is (primarily) a place for those with allergies. I will state though, I have had baked goods that are free of just about everything under the sun and have had them be good. These we just "meh". I got two cookies, chocolate chip and what I can only assume to be sugar, a gingerbread whoopie pie, and a raspberry brownie. Now the brownie should have sold me, but each time I took a bite I had the most awful texture in my mouth - so it ended up being my least favorite. Next followed the cookies that left a lot to be desired, and finally my favorite the whoopie pie, which should not have been my favorite as I am not an icing person, however it did it for this. Perhaps the icing balancing the texture? I am not sure. In the end I am rating them "OK" as I don't know of a ton of offerings for those with dietary restrictions and the fact they're doing it for that crowd is great, but I can't give any more than three stars as I have firsthand experience with items that had better texture and flavor and still omitted all the allergens that Askatu did. read more

I came here after hearing a lot of good things about them. I came during lunch and it wasn't packed but they do have a steady flow. The ladies there are super nice and helpful and was super patient with me as I was soo indecisive of what I wanted. I ended up getting the monster cookie and the whoopie pie made with cranberry white chocolate oatmeal cookies. Both cookies were really good. I definitely would have thought it was allergy free. I love the texture of the whoopie pie a lot and can definitely see myself getting that again. The monster cookie was also good but I just like the whoopie pie more :D Also, I felt the monster cookie was a little pricy and the whoopie pie was more reasonable. $8 for the monster cookie is probably the most expensive cookie I ever bought. This is an incredible bakery in Belltown, Seattle! I travel a lot and am always looking for Gluten-free bakeries like this one. Everything from the breads to cookies to chocolates are delightful--not to mention I don't have to worry about eggs/dairy or other allergens here, so I can indulge and feel great afterwards.
