When Assi Plaza opened in Montgomery County, everyone within a 50-100 mile radius was all about it. Finally, a Korean supermarket in the greater Philadelphia that is with the modern times. Now, we Koreans have more options than just Kobawoo and Han Ah Reum in Cheltenham. Since, I am familiar with Assi in LA, I was excited to go to a brand new location. To my chagrin, it didn't have as many groceries as I anticipated for such a HUGE store. This plaza does have a food court and a few other shops (jewelry store, cell phone store, cosmestics, hats and undergarments, What's good about this location, unlike the one in LA, is that it offers more than just Korean groceries - it really is an Asian supermarket because it offers Chinese, Thai, Japanese, etc groceries. They also have a chicken take out place and have a hut in the middle of the store that sells old school korean bread with red bean in it. Nice size parking lot. read more

OK, so it only took me 10 months to come across an Asian supermarket in Philly's suburbs. Granted, I didn't actively search either... Just came back from my first trip to Assi and I'm pretty happy! Went to find sliced pork belly, which in my experience is difficult to find in 'normal' supermarkets. I thought their meat and fish selection was good. Also saw they had mackerel, something I also can't seem to find in 'normal' supermarkets in my area. Another pleasant surprise was to find dried shredded pork. OMG, I instantly took a pic and sent it to my mum on the other side of the ocean. This is one of my childhood faves. Not sure how Koreans eat this, but at home I used to eat this on a slice of bread with butter (so just like a sandwich). This may sound disgusting to you... Anyway, their produce was not that fresh. A huge mountain of dried and moldy lemons didn't look too appealing to me, but I did get a bunch of cheap lemongrass and fresh Asian greens. Overall, this store has a great selection, although I can't really compare it to any other Asian supermarket in the area since I've only been to some tiny Indonesian stores in South Philly so far. They could expand their cake/dessert section, but then again, I'm just obsessed with cakes. I was also disappointed that there are no cooler bags for sale. Assi Plaza is a 30 min drive for me and with temperatures of 90 I was afraid my meats would lose its coolness on my way home. If they would've sold cooler bags I'd also buy more stuff from their freezer section (lots of frozen dim sum, fish, ice cream and more here). Prices vary. Some things were much more expensive than anywhere else, but then other things were pretty cheap, I thought. Still, happy to have found a place like this. Now if you'll excuse me; I'm going to put those pork belly slices into my homemade marinade before putting them on the barbecue. Yum!!! read more

Nice produce selection, and probably the biggest Asian super market I have ever been in. I had a nice experience here but would not drive that far when I have an H Mart just around the corner. You know when you walk into most markets in Chinatown that sell produce alongside seafood, there is that stench that makes you wither inside and smothers your desire to buy anything? You will not find that at Assi. This place is only slightly further away than my regular local supermarket and based on the quality and selection of produce, meats and seafood - and oh, the PRICE - holy cheapness! I may have to make this a regular stop. So clean and all I smell is stuff I want to sink my teeth into (I already am envisioning making banana blossom salad with those amazing giant purple monsters). Sure there are the mysterious flattened dry squids in bags that make my blood run cold, but there are aisles and aisles of unique products that it take all my will not to sample. A while back I did sample a selection of stuffed steamed buns and gyoza from the frozen section and they are a bit hit or miss - but my spirit of adventured is not dulled. My wife and I are regular shoppers at this Asian market and for many years enjoyed their offerings, but that ends today. This morning we discovered that a package of fresh tofu purchased a few weeks ago had spoiled in the refrigerator. This was obvious by the appearance of the swollen package that indicates bacterial contamination (see photos). The expiry date on the package shows Mar 02 2020, about 2.5 months from now. Although I no longer had the purchase receipt, I thought that we were certainly entitled to a refund. However the store refused a refund without a receipt. I argued that having a receipt would not matter, since the pack is within expiry, but the woman at the service counter continued to refuse a refund of a few dollars. I feel that this is unfair and very poor business practice, and even could put AT RISK other customers who also might have contaminated food from this batch but who might not recognize the swelling as a marker of this. This is irresponsible and unethical business practice. If you decide to shop for fresh food here, be very careful of their fresh food and keep all receipts until the food is eaten. I plan to notify the county and state agencies responsible for food safety. read more

Uni is back! And the fresh sashimi grade seafood is just as amazing as ever (just go and see the giant scallops and ahi, and you will know what I am talking about). Plus, they have quite possibly the biggest Fuji apples ever, for only $1.29/lb. I now have a huge basket of these sitting on the kitchen counter and they are just perfectly sweet and crisp. Love it! The frozen seafood section has also been expanded and they now have 5-6 vaieties of BBQ eel (around $15/lb.). If you are a ramen/zhajiangmian fan, they are having a big Nong Shim sale this week, so be sure to stock up since ramen, thankfully, has an expiration date of forever. read more

Assi is like South Korea invaded a suburban big-box grocer. The food selection leans heavily toward Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, but you'll also find some South and Southeast Asian goodies. The store itself is super clean, brightly lit, and chock full of impulse buys-- er, new and exciting products. My one gripe is the food court, which does not live up to its promises. I've had some just-okay meals, and one that made me quite ill. From now on when I get hungry, I'll just hit up the snack aisle for some Pocky and prawn crisps. read more

I have been here a couple of times, when ever I travel with my parents and brother to Pa, I shop at Assi Plaza. The selection of food is great, if you are looking to shop for Korean School Supplies you will have to shop at H-Mart in Upper Darby and Elkins Park. Been here a few times as it's basically the only Korean market in the area and there're a few Korean restaurants (though not so great) in the same plaza and in the market itself. Solid 3/5 in that it has the basic things I'd want to get at a Korean market but it's missing a few of the non-essential items I'm so used to finding at Korean markets in LA (i.e. desserts, snacks, certain fruits). The fresh produce is decent and so is their food court foods. I have seen quite a few accidents on the intersection with traffic lights (not sure if that means the stereotypical Asian drivers are proven correct here or just poor road planning) so be extra careful and aware that you are driving among many Asian drivers. Where else can you rock out to Asian boy band music while shopping for live lobsters, pummels and Japanese sweet potatoes? I can even practice my Spanish by listening to the staff announcements over the loud speaker. Assi is great for a large assortment of produce (larger than any other suburban food stores near us), live fish and shelfish, siracha and about 1000 other types of sauces and seasonings, and some tasty frozen foods. I have little to complain about when it comes to their selection, and I usually find myself shopping there at least twice a month. My only advice is to check the expiration dates on EVERYTHING! I have had about 10 instances where I purchased products that were long past their expiration date. Now that I've found that to be the case I simply check everything before it enters my cart. Also make sure you thoroughly wash your produce when you get home. I have found creatures hiding in the leaves of my bok choy on more than one occasion. And, although I love eating foods from around the globe, I do see why people have a problem with eating anything but locally grown produce. There's something a bit unnatural about eating a piece of fruit that was picked 3 weeks prior. Because Assi has so many produce items that clearly aren't grown in the United States, I would say it's safe to assume much of their fresh produce has been harvested long before appearing on the shelves. Just a thought. Lastly, I would like to know why they only sell female, blue crabs. Because they only sell females (you can find them live in a large bin a few times a month) I refuse to purchase them. I grew up crabbing and was always taught to throw back the females and only eat the males (so that you don't deplete the supply). I am a bit confused as to why Assi would ONLY sell females. All in all, Assi is a solid place to find a large variety of food at decent prices. Just don't be surprised if you occasionally end up with something that is a bit less than fresh. read more

Not a fan of this place at all. I've tried to get produce here on 2 occasions and most of the things I was trying to buy were either rotten or quickly on their way. I also couldn't find red curry paste without shrimp which isn't an issue at other Asian markets that I've gone to. Overall there are much better options for fresh produce. read more

Everything about Assi is awesome especially the fish and prepared kimchi. The product is great too very good prices all around. They are also beginning to carry many more international foods too. Probably the cleanest of the Asian bazaar places in the us. Has pretty much everything. Not cheap but fair quality. Really a Thai chinese japonese mandarin mexican shop. And don't forget Korean. Must have 300 fresh. Frozen. Packaged noodles. All types. And premade packaged spices that rival going out any day and better ingredients. So.. this is my second time at Assi Plaza. This time around I brought my mom and my sister along with me. They seemed to enjoy this place a lot. Especially mom. I asked her if this was indeed the biggest asian supermarket ever (for groceries purposes only). She said yeah. I'm glad to found a place that is not as far as Mitsuwa that mom loved. Definitely a 5 stars grocery store. Highly recommended to everyone who have time and ride to do some serious groceries shopping. I wouldn't say that this place is cheap.. but this place definitely have more stuffs that you're not normally see at any other grocery store. And get this, the product of this place is very fresh. Fresh fruits,veggies, meats, fishes, meats.. etc. Lots of snacks that we never seen before. I have a feeling that we will be visiting this place again very soon. read more

As Asian Markets go this is pretty good. As for it being in the burbs and sort of on my way home even better. It's large and mostly clean . The produce section is good but has many seconds. The meats and fish are interesting. Sometimes very good values. They excel in dry stuff noodles etc cans and sauces of exotic-stuff. On the far right they have a mediocre Asian food court . They have many different cultures and cuisines represented. Even a very good Mexican and Indian area. So.... if you need something weird to cook, no matter what cuisine this may be a good option. read more

This place is consistent for having fresh produce. The seafood market also has a wide variety of good stuff to get. You can buy sashimi cuts and make your own sushi (makes for a delicious home made party snack). Check out the mini food court they have in here. My personal favorite is the stand that sells Japanese food. They have this tonkatsu (pork cutlet) udon (noodle soup) combo that's awesome. read more

Love Assi. I only shop here now for a few basics once in a while since I moved, but it was one of my normal grocery stores when I lived near by. Like other people have said, the produce is cheap, but some days it's better than others. Plenty of Asian ingredients and produce that you won't find at other grocery stores. Good fish counter, too. Assi plaza has great produce and probably the freshest seafood. I am always amazed at the selection they have. Also best place to get kimchi. They have a few aisles of it. I do most of my grocery shopping here since they have what I need and I don't have to pay whole food prices. Highly recommended. I've never been to North Wales just to go, but my boyfriend is originally from there and took me to Assi for the first time (a couple weeks ago). I, officially, love korean supermarkets! They are so clean and they have everything I need, what more can I ask for ? They're not limited to just korean products, but have many other asian items. And twas here that I found my new love: banana milk. I'd love to give it 5 stars but sadly, its just out of the way for me :( read more

Assi is decent at best. It's labeled as a "Korean Market" but in terms of actual authentic Korean food it falls short compared to H-mart.

This is the only other korean market I know of besides H-mart that is near Philly. This place is quite big compared to them, but more expensive. The meats are about $1.00 more per pound and its the same quality. The chinese vegatables are not as fresh as they are in the Chinese market in Chinatown or around Adams Ave. in Philly. They dont clean all the fish for some reason, only the ones that are fresh or layed on the ice. I'd stay away from the bags of jasmine rice, for they are 15 dollars more for the 50lb bags. Yes being Chinese, we do buy 50lb bags of rice, either the one with the elephant or the one with the red flower on it lol. The "food court" is quite small, i believe its only 4 vendors there, serving chinese, korean, japanese and i guess a mix of all 3. There is a bakery there which is ok. I like Paris bakery better located at H-mart near Cheltenham. All in all, if your near Montgomeryville, take a look for yourself. You may like it. Go on the weekends!!! Why is this store such a hidden gem? I lived in the area for 4 years before finding this incredible Asian grocery store. The seafood can not be beat. I prefer this place over Hmart and have found the seafood counter to be priced well and the fish always fresh. I always get the frozen rib eye to make bulgogi at home. They also have a nice food court located inside the grocery store/ plaza which is quite good. They have great produce variety that you will not find anywhere else. read more

I've waited about 2 weeks to write this review because I am STILL processing how much awesome is packed into one market. Anything you have ever needed or wanted to try in the way of Asian food is here. For English speakers, it may be a little difficult to navigate, so have a lot of time and patience. I taught my office Sushi rolling basics and got all the supplies here. The fish is excellent and about 1/2 the price of what I would have paid at my local fishmonger. They even had the shrimp deveined and sliced for sushi! We also ate a quick lunch in the little food court and again, everything was very good. I live in Center City and actually like this place better than our asian markets on Washington. There are some nicer asian restaurants including and awesome Korean BBQ for those that want to make it an afternoon in the burbs. read more

This is the largest Asian mart around our area, and it's a pretty great place. They've got anything you could want, even a small restaurant section with a sushi place and I think a bakery as well. The best parts: the endless selection of foods, no icky asian fish market smell, clean and brightly lit, the small restaurants inside. Loud and bright with fluorescent lighting. Lots of produce, nothing organic (that we could find) and lots of damaged-looking fruits and vegetables. The fish market stinks of fish, and the aisles are packed with all kinds of asian and american fare. And housewares, mostly of asian decent, like chopsticks and rice cookers. If we need something not readily available at the regular grocery store, we happily head over to Assi Market. comparing to five years ago, the quality of fresh seafood and vegetable went down and the price went up. I used to visit ASSI like every weekend about five years ago and after I moved to DE, everything has been changed. After moving back to PA, I went to here today. I can tell the reasons why some people suggest me to Hmart instead. The seafood selection is so dirty and they have two price for seafood, one is DIY and the higher price is that they clean the fish for you. I really don't like the way how they do business. Also, be careful on the vegetable you pick, because cheaper price means low quality as you can see some of them already went bad. read more

So being in the King of Prussia area and trying to find good Korean can be tough. There are a few local grocery stores we frequent but they can be costly. Assi is perfect because you can get your shopping done and they also have an awesome Asian food court. Korean is hands down my favorite food and there are so many options and prices that are not NYC. If you've ever been to Korean Town in NYC you know what I am talking about. The nice part is at the food court, everyone can pick what they like and you are not limited to one restaurant. If you've never tried it, don't be afraid, they have pictures of the food items and don't be afraid to ask someone - especially if you see them eating something that looks delicious! The grocery part is wonderful too. they stock the hard to find items and their product is always fresh and priced right. Assi is always clean, they constantly have several janitorial people walking around cleaning. It DOES NOT have any bad smells like they have just bleached stuff down. You will get a smell of their fish department but it's always a fish smell because of the freshness. Wonderful place! read more

This is a great place with more varieties of vegetable selection that you will need on any given day. I live just few mins drive from this place, so I pop in and out for a quick visit to grab whatever I need to cook up some dish. But, the place can be quite daunting on your first visit. I was lost in the store for over an hour combing through each isle in a state of mass confusion!!! I couldn't decide what to get. They have a great selection of seafood and kimchi as mentioned by other reviewers. They also have few tables set up for samples to help you decide what you may like/want to buy. Only one complaint is that on several occasions, I got chased outside the exit by certain church group members recruiting for their respective denominations. read more

Been shopping here for years and remiss to write a review. Homemade Tofu. That is all I have to say for why you should trek out to the burbs and check out this place. Just an amazing Asian grocery/produce shopping experience. Excellent produce prices and incredible selection. Every possible condiment that you may need to make a delectable Asian dish is here, trust me. And then there's the surprise finds ... like the best kettle corn I ever had ! So I'm gonna give Assi a reluctant 4 stars, primarily because the only other Korean grocery I made it to while in Philly (H-Mart, which is usually top notch, is a dump) Why a reluctant 4. Well It's probably closer to a really strong 3.5, but we will round up. Points deducted for moldy korean sweet potatoes, and for a food court that looks promising but isn't quite up to par with what I've seen at other Korean groceries. Prices seem pretty good and there is a good selection of Korean Products They were closed for remodeling when I tried to stop by the first time, and after having gone through the place, I'm not sure what they remodeled, as it looks rather dated as it is. Anyway, its a solid place to shop and about the only thing I could find near where I wa staying. Still I've been spoiled with really nice H-Marts in Chicago, Virginia and LA so this place falls short compared to those, but given the location and competition for the closest H-Mart this is a reluctant 4 :) read more

This place has the best produce section around: fresh, quality fruits and veggies that are fairly priced. There's a wide assortment of noodles and dry goods, and it's always well stocked. The icing on the cake is the nicely provisioned Korean beauty counter tucked near the food court. read more
