I've been coming here since I was 12 with my parents, and it's since become a tradition to eat breakfast here anytime we're passing through Williamsburg. I'm originally from the beach, and I currently go to school in Richmond, so as you can tell, we pass through a lot. Today we were seated timely but then spent an hour at the table before we were sporadically served - two out of four meals first, the third several minutes later and the fourth when the rest of us were done. They also forgot an order of a side of pancakes that we ordered. The food was, "eh". Went there when our hotel recommended them. Will let the hotel also know not to recommend anymore. This is my favorite breakfast place in Williamsburg hands down. My number one favorite thing about this place is their is syrupy canned fruit toppings here. They use fresh fruit in all their pancakes, French toast, & waffles. My favorite is the fruit fall because it has a bunch of different seasonal fruit on it like peaches, strawberries & all sorts of stuff. The servings here are pretty big...and by by pretty big I mean huge. Pancakes are the size of an extra large dinner plate. People rarely finish them in a single sitting. Be prepared to ask for a box. Servers are also nice. They're not superficial plastic smiles, all very down to earth & genuine. A note: this is a good breakfast place so it's gonna be crowded on weekends. This seems to be a shocker to many for some reason?? You go after 10:30 on a Sunday prepare to wait a while for food because it's you and 30 other people. Food is always worth the wait though. I took my 4year old granddaughter here for pancakes. What a mistake!! They are Upon arrival was advised there was a 30 minute wait (for 2?) but decided to wait. We waited in their 'inside' waiting area - located right around corner from hostess station. After seeing a sole man seated right after his arrival (we'd been waiting 50+ minutes) I approached the hostess who said she had called our name- how that could have happened when we were sitting just 10-12 feet from her seems incredulous. She then seated us & assigned us a waitress we saw a total of two times. The lack of service was incredible. So extremely bad service, mediocre food that was priced high, plus an environment not conducive to children , all makes this a place NOT to frequent. read more

So I'm basically a pancake enthusiast (seriously yeah, they're among my top favorite foods), and of all the many pancakes I've eaten, whether made by myself or at a restaurant, THIS place easily has the tastiest pancakes of all; and not just the tastiest, but also the hugest ever!! We're talking literally 12 inches in diameter, so basically the full size of a dinner plate (more in-depth details on these puppies below). It's pretty rare to find that both the biggest AND the yummiest pancakes are at the same restaurant, but this place holds both trophies in my opinion (my super experienced pancake enthusiast opinion...remember that ). But I've been to Astronomical Pancake House 3 times now, and I've yet to have an experience that is anything less than stellar. They have these seasonal "pumpkin swirl" pancakes during October and November, and THESE are the pancakes that I'm referring to when I say "the best I've ever had." They taste just like a homemade pumpkin cinnamon roll, if you can imagine that. They're cooked just perfectly: not overdone at all, slightly crisp on the outside and awesomely moist/almost gooey on the inside. They're served very warm and they're absolutely of ample thickness yeah they're very thick and filling pancakes...as I mentioned earlier, the entire size of a large dinner plate, so only order 2 if you're a very hungry beast or you plan on taking some food home in a box. I have literally nothing negative to say about them. The only other food items I've ordered here thus far are eggs (which were cooked well, so no complaints), and their "royal French toast," which is not an official menu item, but they make it if requested. It's basically French toast dipped in pancake batter, deep fried, and served with cream cheese glaze on it, so it's not any type of healthy, but a pretty dang delicious treat. Anyhow, I liked it, but I like these pumpkin swirl pancakes much more. I've tasted their normal buttermilk pancakes as well when eating here with my family, and even those taste better than other buttermilk pancakes I've had anywhere else I think. This place has just got everything right when it comes to the food. The only somewhat negative things I have to say are 1) the wait time can be a bit long if your group is more than a couple people, but the superb quality of the food makes up for that; and 2) the prices are a BIT higher than most breakfast places, but not by much, and it's mainly the pancakes that seem expensive, however you're getting the equivalent of about 4 pancakes with just 1 big pancake at this place, so it's actually quite reasonably priced I'd say. Plus they have a "loyal customer" card that they will give you if you ask which grants you a free entree every 5th visit, which is AWESOME! So all in all, I have to rate this place 5 stars. Breakfast foods are my favorite foods, and this restaurant became my most favorite place for breakfast after just my first visit. I've had two very different experiences here. On my first, I brought my 9-year-old for a special Daddy breakfast. She ordered two huge pancakes and ate all the fruit off of the top. I tried a bite of the pancakes. They were delicious. I wasn't very hungry so I just had a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee. The coffee tasted a bit burnt. The service was great. It wasn't a 5-star experience, but we had a nice time. On my second, I brought my sweetheart. She had eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast. I had the special, SOS (s*** on a shingle AKA creamed chipped beef on toast). We each had a cup of coffee and I had a glass of juice. Her bacon, and this is not an exaggeration, was 85% fat. My SOS was so salty I couldn't eat more than a few bites. The potatoes were truly gross: rotted spots, too salty. And so much of it. I'd have been happy with the portion size of it was cut in half. The service was not good. Our server was gruff with us. The bill came to $27.50 without the tip. $30-plus for a terrible breakfast is crazy. If you come here, stick to the pancakes. read more

Astronomical Pancakes lives up to it's name. We've eaten here twice this week and both times, outstanding. The pancakes are the size of a pizza and delicious. The waffles are so light and fluffy it's like eating cake. And the grits, OMG, are truly astronomical. I've always thought grits were grits until I ate Astronomical's. The grits will spoil you for life. They go beyond normal grits, creamy and flavorful. Both my wife and I think these are the best grits, EVER!! My wife likes her eggs over easy and I like mine over medium. A simple request that many places get wrong. One of us usually gets over or under cooked eggs. Astronomical got the orders perfect. It was our first time coming here and we will not be back. We asked for a cup of whole milk for our 18 month old son. After he drank about 1/3 of the milk our 4 year old daughter asked if she could have a drink of his milk and she immediately said it tastes bad. I learned a lesson this day. Scrapple is different here than it is in Philadelphia. It's still good, but it's different. Great breakfast place, really close to the Anvil Campground, great coffee, and a huge menu to satisfy everyone. The cinnamon swirl pancake is to die for, but it's crazy huge - two plate size pancakes is a bit of overkill. Drop the price a little and make it one pancake - or offer 1/2 orders. I have never been more conflicted in a dinning experience in my life. I avoided the OJ as some other yelpers had suggested. But I suggest avoiding the cranberry as well. Then I ordered a Sierra Mist after I didn't like it either. It lacked syrup. I mixed the two and got a good drink, go figure. Now the server seemed new. She wasn't quick to respond. We would ask for something and it would be a while before it would make it's way to our table. We asked for ketchup and ended up asking the table next to us to use the one they had and after we returned it one was brought to our table. Now for the food: I had the blueberry pancakes. It came with blueberries in the batter as well as fresh blueberries on top Awesome! They, the pancakes, are astronomical! And they are very good (just don't try to reheat them). My wife had the plain pancakes and bearly eat one of the two. The whip cream is out of this world (for whip cream freaks). We also order scrambled eggs with cheese, home fries and sausage links. The eggs were just ok the home fries were good with grilled peppers. And the links were very good. Eventually seated just moments before the pre-determined thirty-minute 'walk-out' mark, it was much to my annoyance that the table simultaneously placed next to us was greeted with smiling service moments later by an elderly African American waitress while our young male server scurried about essentially ignoring us until I called out, and requesting to at least receive a glass of coffee or water after the long wait an attempted simultaneous order was immediately shot down with the youngster apparently "out of tickets," another long delay to follow with neither coffee nor water arriving until after the order was finally placed...and neither refilled with any sort of gusto throughout the course of our stay. Hoping at this point that the food would justify the hassle it was no surprise that the entirety of a large order arrived at once and immediately thankful for an empty table to be used as a sideboard it was not long before photos were taken and indulgence began, the hockey-puck hard biscuits a lone disappointment as two daily specials and the restaurant's "signature" cinnamon swirl pancakes each proved well deserving of not only price and praise, but potentially even the wait. Starting savory before moving to sweet it was almost as if our visit was expected when I saw the Monte Cristo-esque "French Toast Melt" on the white-board specials and loaded with briny Virginia ham, fluffy eggs, and sharp cheddar the griddled Texas Toast sandwich was quite excellent even before the addition of a layer of Strawberry jam, the same to be said of a creamy bowl of grits from which my mother partook greedily leaving me to focus on a truly 'astronomical' stack of buttermilk pancakes ribboned with cinnamon streusel beneath a layer of melting butter and liberally applied frosting rich with the flavor of cream cheese. Admittedly impressed by the aforementioned sandwich and stack, it was nonetheless a "save the best for last" scenario when we finally delved into the Royal French Toast, and definitely as decadent as the description would lead one to believe batter coated French toast can most reasonably be described as a breakfast "funnel cake," the golden shell just a touch oily while the core was wispy and light, the addition of butter, cream cheese, and just a touch of pancake syrup pushing the plate into the realm of 'best ever' status, though even when divided by two persons the substantial richness was a bit much...though perhaps that has something to do with ordering two additional plates of food...or the cake, pancakes, French toast, and donuts already consumed earlier that day. read more
