I was looking for a place to eat in Astoria and I was excited to see a Greek/middle eastern spot. We plugged Athena into the GPS and were very surprised when we were expected to drive over this tiny rickety bridge to get to the pier. At first I thought it was pedestrian only, but glad everything worked out! Athena is within the building on the pier; the ambience is pleasant with nice music playing and a cozy space. I sadly had to take a star off because the food just wasn't great, it was just ok. For example, the tzatziki was just plain Greek yogurt out of a tub. I was really hoping for a rich lemony, garlicky tzatziki with dill, and we got none of those flavors. The rice was ok but not as good as any other apron rice I have ordered. All in all, if they step up the flavor, this could be a really great spot!

Delicious, authentic food, friendly staff and cute ambiance. Was moderately busy and only server/greeter/cashier so not a quick in-and-out, but food came pretty quick and was totally worth it. Will definitely be back!

Great experience at Athena's on pier 39. Service and food were quite good and the ambiance of being in an old cannery building was pretty cool. They also had a high chair for our one year old.

This is a little off the beaten path, but a great discovery. Everything was perfect. Great tasting, big portions, and the place itself has a nice atmosphere.

Baba ganoush platter, chicken and falafel shawarma and a roses lemonade (sparkly:)

We had such a great time eating here! The owner invited us in as though we were family and gave great recommendations:) we enjoyed the hummus and baba ganoush platter, shawarma and a gyro. Everything was so fresh, tasty, and the friendly vibes from Rose were amazing. We had a great time and will most definitely be back!

This place was wonderful! We stumbled upon it while walking around pier 39 and it made for a very pleasant surprise. The interior was well furnished and very welcoming, the staff were friendly, and the food was delicious. We ordered the lamb-beef shawarma platter with an appetizer of pita and hummus. The pate was well put together and very fresh. The only thing that could have been better was the pita, it appeared to be store bought and warmed up but still tasted fine with the hummus. We give an extra point for having "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" on in the background whilst we waited. This place is definitely a good place to try if you're in the Astoria area!

It was absolutely outstanding! Every ingredient felt incredibly fresh and vibrant. The rich flavors of the grilled tempeh and the perfect tang of the sauerkraut paired beautifully with the hearty, fresh-baked rye. The service was also wonderful and incredibly thoughtful--they noticed we were sharing and kindly split the sandwich into two separate plates for us before bringing it out, which we truly appreciated. The only downside was the iced tea, which unfortunately tasted quite watered down and lacked flavor. Aside from that, it's a fantastic spot. If you're exploring the historic streets of Astoria and looking for high-quality, conscious food, this place is definitely worth a visit!

We were able to try a wide variety of dishes, and every single one was exceptional. I have dietary restrictions (no onions or garlic), and the kitchen and staff were incredibly accommodating. They prepared separate versions of several dishes for me without hesitation, and I never felt like I was getting a lesser experience. It's rare to find a restaurant that can accommodate food sensitivities so thoughtfully while still delivering incredible flavor. The food was absolutely delicious from start to finish, and the service was impeccable. The staff was warm, attentive, and made our birthday celebration feel special without ever being overbearing. Everyone in our group left talking about how amazing the food was. We couldn't have asked for a better meal or a better overall experience. Mediterranean Exploration Company has definitely earned a spot on our list of favorite Portland restaurants, and we can't wait to come back.

Reviewing the menu, there were lots of yummy things to choose from but ultimately we both could not resist the Lamb shank. I'm sad I didn't take a picture of it. It was so tender and delicious. It came with perfect Basmati rice and a side of eggplant stew that was exquisite! I've never had eggplant stew and it was luscious. I dream to about it all night long. My first impression as we entered here was: the AC was on, and I'm not ready for AC (yet), and the inside was too elegant, and empty. We waited awhile, when a staff appeared. We picked a seat outside, where the weather was pleasant and shady. I needed badly, to use the restroom, so I went back inside, only to be told it's outside. The mural on the walls, obscured the door to the restroom. But, there was no TP, no paper towel, and the trash was full. I had to use a toilet seat cover paper, for my TP, and went back to my seat, not happy with what I just did! I told my husband, who then told the staff, because HE need to use the restroom, too. (We've been gone all morning, this is now lunch hour). The staff gave water, menu and we ordered: The Lamb Shank. I love the eggplant stew! There's also a small salad with the Basmati rice. Also Chicken Kabob Mezza Platter with Pita bread. It was not until we're done eating, and ready to get up, did I notice there was cubed cucumber in the thaziki. But, it's got a very strong vinegar flavor, but I did like the hummus and the ghanoush. (When we eat at these places, we always pick the lamb shanks, btw). I had the other half, for my dinner tonight. The server was friendly, helpful and responsive. The atmosphere, was pleasant, and the photo taken of me, hubby thought I could pass as an Iraqi woman! LOL Thanks for the bag. We picked some crabapples, from down the street, there were 4-5 large trees ready for the pickin' from the sidewalk.
