Athenian Greek has closed suddenly. They were inspected by the Restaurant division of the Dept. Of Health in the fall of 2025. The report was very lengthy citing various temperature control and storage and cleanliness violations. Of interest was the note that the restaurant was approved for 34 seats and had 70.- ish seats inside. i have not eaten there in 15 years but I was wondering how customers fared after eating there. read more

I love Greek food! I've been here 3 times now and every time it's been perfect. This time ckn platter and a Greek chicken sandwich was on our order. Tried out Athenian Greek Taverna with my sister over the holidays. Not only is the greek food delicious, but there is also a bar! There is such a great assortment of adult beverages available, especially craft cocktails and martinis. I had a very delicious rainbow cookie martini and my sister had the baklava martini. We tried their special dinner one night. It was rotisserie chicken, lemon potatoes, a Greek salad and green beans. The chicken was ultra juicy and delicious. The potatoes had a wonderful flavor, but could have been a little more crispy and green beans were gone before I even got to try them. I highly recommend Athenian. The family dinner was priced right. Did you ever order a side of fries from a fast food restaurant, only to get a sack of stubs? Well, this is what I liken my recent gyro to...a wrap filled with meat stubs. Not only was the gyro meat in teeny tiny slivers, but...the majority of the meat was also dried out, some pieces inedible. (My dog enjoyed chewing these bits.) I was very disappointed considering the cost was $24. This included rice, which was delicious, and a side of Greek salad. I'm not sure what happened because in the past, I've never had any issues. DO NOT EAT HERE!! Deceptive billing policy. Received our bill and all prices were higher than the menu prices!! We also had a Groupon coupon. The owner told our poor waitress that the bill was credit card prices and if we were paying cash we could pay the menu prices BUT we couldn't use the coupon because that would be a :DOUBLE DISCOUNT". Ordered the chicken kabobs and they were so salty that I could barely eat it. I could only eat one bite from the very center of each piece of chicken. The rest was a salt lick and it was Just awful and so disappointing. To be fair, the last time I had this same dish on December 5, 2025 it was delicious. What a find. As a fellow greek I can be a tough critic and I have nothing bad to say about this place. First off they have huge portions which is great. The saganaki was lovely and is a nice start to the meal. It is served literally on fire which is traditional. The gyro is also massive and the meat was tender and flavorful. Went on a Thursday evening and it was trivia night. It was easy to play as you played on your phone. It was fun and easy to play. As for the food it was great! The ladies in our party had the Greek salad with grilled chicken. Although it's a very basic dish they loved it. There was so much they had leftovers for the next days lunch. We also an appetizer to share, two entrees, one dessert, and one wine bottle for only $69! Great deal and again the portions were huge. Last but not least our waitress was excellent. She made great recommendations, explaining the Greek entrees perfectly. She was super attentive and let us enjoy our meals while dropping by and giving us refills. 1998- the last time I was fortunate to eat at this lovely, warm establishment in Commack on Long Island NY 42 miles east of Manhattan. January 7,2023 - got to go back to this wonderful restaurant this afternoon. Sadly the lovely owner George had passed. Beautiful soul! The restaurant also moved to a much larger free standing space right across Jericho Tpke 4 years ago. What stayed the same in fact I would say even got better was the warmth, the welcome, the vibe, the beautiful new surroundings, the attentive service and the food! The food- huge portions. Spectacular Spanakopita - massive serving with that crispy and flaky phyllo crust and the perfect balance of the spinach and feta with a hint of lemon that made it even better. The sides- delicious lemon potatoes with the flavors absorbed in and the Greek rice( big dish) pilaf that was addicting and soft n bursting with flavor. The Chicken Akrata had the most incredible filling and that sauce, oh that sauce; a huge and fresh Greek salad and the Chicken Orzo soup that were divine. Smiles galore as tons of leftovers for those 3 am cravings. The comp appetizers came out to our booth in 120 seconds. Warm pita with a generous serving of tantalizing tzitziki and orzo in tomato sauce. They were gone in 300 seconds and replenished seconds later. Our server Candace was a lovely person. Warm, welcoming, patient, alert, engaging, funny, let us enjoy our food, no rush no fuss, kept the soda and coffee refilled, got us extra tzatziki with a smile. The GM Laura also came over and was a sweetheart. She told us about the Open Mike Wednesdays(karaoke) that sounded like fun. They also have a Happy Hour Monday to Friday from 4-8 in the beautiful bar. It felt so, so good to be back at Athenian Greek Taverna. This local Greek spot is truly a Mom and Pop establishment that gave us a sense of community, family, and independent business. A great casual night out with a great vibe. We came in for dinner on a Friday and the place was packed. From what I've heard it's usually always packed and I can understand why. They had live music playing classic dinner songs from Sinatra and Dean Martin, and next to us was a family that was complaining the whole night, but we ignored that. The server was very friendly, the generosity of included Pita, Tzatziki and Orzo was very nice. The portion size also is MASSIVE, remember this, you can split things and take home for two more meals. The prices are very on point also, definetly feel like your getting your moneys worth. Because they were packed service was slow, but I can understand that due to the volume. 4 stars. This is a review based on 3 visits-the place is always busy so I kept thinking I was just there on an off night but I do not believe that is the case at this point. The first and second times I ate inside. The place really has a busy yet warm vibe. The staff has always been nice. The food however is just never right. The grilled Octopus was perfectly cooked the first time but so salty it was unpleasant. The second time I mentioned the salt because I wanted to enjoy it this time around and it was chewy n charred ( not lightly). The gyro was fine. The salad was nice but the dressing super oily. Last night I decided to try a falafel sandwich to go. I wanted tahini not Tzatziki and the voice on the phone said no problem but when I picked it up, they charged me 1.30 for the tahini. I questioned it three times saying I just wanted to substitute and she emphatically said no I can't. I went to my car and I thought about it and I was annoyed ...so I went back in and I said I don't want the whole thing! The manager said of course you could substitute it. She took two dollars off and was lovely...BUT... the problem when I got home was the sandwich itself....the toppings were sparse although it did have five falafel balls,....but they had some sort of crunchy circular grain in them that was not cooked.... It was a bizarre texture. The tahini itself was just liquidy and had no flavor.Since I did have the yogurt sauce as well I tried it and that was fine... (I need to find a place with good Tahini)..... They gave me a side that was huge ...lemon potatoes ... I normally really like these but another item which is just not my favorite from this restaurant as they taste like very over cooked boiled potatoes ...I've had them like this before so it might be a preparation technique.... but they don't taste very good... imho......also the telephone voice told me the sandwich comes with lettuce, onion, and cheese.....I said what kind of cheese and she said feta .....and I said that's odd but OK ....and tomato right and she said oh yeah tomato ...BTW...there's no feta as I wouldn't expect there would be it's just that the phone voice was not trained very well with the information.....Not giving it a fourth try! read more

This was our first time here and it was quite good. We were greeted by a very nice hostess and our waitress was great too. Some complimentary tzatziki with pita and some orzo was a nice surprise. We ordered a dip combo with spicy feta, skordalia and taromasalata. It also has grape leaves, olives, fresh cucumber and of course, pita. I think my favorite was the spicy feta. It was packed with a lot of heat but not so much that you couldn't enjoy it. My next favorite was the score Dahlia which They were kind enough to switch with the hummus. The taroma was nice but I didn't like that it was a little too whipped. But it tasted good.Everything was very fresh and flavorful. It was a lot of food. I should've stopped at the dip platter but I also ordered a Zeus Gyro sandwich. It was also very tasty but I was a little too full to actually enjoy it. The meat seemed to be very tasty and no complaints from me. My husband had the Gyro Melt which was gyro sandwich open faced with cheese melted on top. He enjoyed that too. I figured it had to be new so I thought hey something new let me try it. This is a Greek restaurant. The greatest decision I made that day. The restaurant opens up at 12pm . It's in a great spot. Jericho Tpke and Veterans Hwy in Commack. Right across the street is the new Bjs just open months ago. So my friend and I entered the restaurant it just opened. It was spotless. Smelled great , good vibrations. We were approached immediately and taken to a booth seat in the back. I think the server name was Shannon. Can't remember lol. I do recall her being extremely helpful and knowledgeable of the menu. Her suggestions were great. I started with the Orzo soup omg it was definitely delicious. First time tasting it. Amazing. I then had the lamb gyro which was sooooo good. It came with side of fries. But the dessert is what really makes it worth wild. I had the custard baklava. Oh my goodness. I know inflation is a thing and this is a newer location they have to pay for, but the gyros here aren't any better than places where they are charging $18 or less. Pete the Greek in Hauppauge (counter service), Akropolis in Nesconset (wait service) to name 2 of quite a few. Yes, they give you a small greek salad with the gyro for $25. But still, $20 is acceptable. Wanted to really like this place but I can't spend $70 with tax tip and one drink for what is basically Greek street food. By far my fav Greek place. The portions are huge and the food is always fresh. 9/10 I take my orders to go. On a whim, we went and stayed to eat in the restaurant on a Wednesday. I get trying to bring in a crowed for less crowded days, but they have karaoke on Wednesdays, and I wish I would've known. It was SO LOUD and we couldn't hear ourselves talking which was honestly really annoying and made it so I'll never stay to eat again. I love the authentic Greek dishes served at "Mama Yaya's." That's what we call this place. The people are very friendly and the dishes are generously portioned, but a bit pricey, yet you always have leftovers. I like how they give you the orzo in the red sauce with pita bread and yogurt sauce while you are waiting for your meal to come out. We have been to Athenian many, many times over the years. The food has always been good, but the service has always been inconsistent. We went a few weeks ago and when we walked in we are asked if we had a reservation (this must be new, as we have never had the option to make a reservation). We did not have a reservation, to which we were met with an eye roll. We were sat.....and we sat, and sat, and sat some more. No water, no eye contact. Even with two waiters assigned the area, who were waiting on other tables immediately next to us, no eye contact. At this point, we are now sitting for probably about 8-10 minutes. My husband wanted to get up and leave and I convinced him to give it 5 more minutes. We set a timer and guess what? Still waiting and we got up and left. I left feeling like a family member and I think about my experience here every few days! I wanted to highlight their BRAND NEW bar menu, bar area, and patio. Such a great place to be for summer! They are currently doing live music 4 days a week, Wednesdays to Saturdays so it's a great place to hang out and share some appetizers and drinks with your favorite people. My husband had the gyro platter dinner, my buddy had the Olympia meat platter and I had the burger. Gyro platter loaded with meat and yogurt sauce with lemon potatoes the Mr Olympus meat platter is for meat lovers you get beef , chicken, lamb and pork . I had the best burger EVER! Omg! This was a great combination of brisket and filet mignon then seasoned perfectly I just had sautéed onions and melted mozzarella and the yummy sweet bun topped it off. I ate the whole thing. It supposed to come with spicy feta and greens and other things but I don't like feta lol and didn't want all the other stuff and let me tell you the burger by itself was perfect! Upon walking in they have traditional Greek packaged foods, and a lot of Greek oils and wine displayed, which to me is a decoy because the food is absolutely not Greek.
