I have had people recommend this restaurant to me countless times and I finally tried it out. I went around 1 p.m. on a Saturday and it was hovering around full capacity. I had heard that this place doesn't accept reservations and gets a line out the door, so keep that in mind if reservations are important to you. I ordered the gyro dinner meal and it was delicious with very large portions! The dinner meal comes with the gyro and a side of fries. A couple friends and I went early to Athenian Room around 5 on a Friday and had no problem getting seated at a table outside right away. This place definitely has some quirks as it is cash only and does not serve alcohol. However, the bar next door sent waitresses out to our table to take drink orders for us. Our waitress was super nice and recommended we try the taramosalata to start, which was really yummy! Then we ordered Greek salads and decided to split the chicken kalamata style and the gyro dinner. Pretty tasty food, but the textures were unideal (on the drier side). The standout for me was the Baklava -- I would definitely order this again. I got takeout from The Athenian Room and it was a quick and easy process. Nice folks behind the counter. We tried the Greek Salad, Gyro Sandwich, Gyro Dinner, and Baklava. The portions were very generous, and the flavors were on point. Big fan of the feta cheese that they use. I found the beef to be a bit dry, and the tzatziki was thick for my preference. The food was fairly priced and tasty. I could see myself coming back, but I'm not quite ready to make it my go-to Greek spot. read more

Ordered for carry out, the restaurant was less than 1/3 full (I am trying to be fair and thoughtful in this review). The Gyros were dry and I found myself wanting more spice; however, the chicken breast shish kebab was almost inedible due to the dryness and lack of seasoning. Even dipped in the oil/au jus AND tzatziki sauces, the chicken could not be saved. Both dishes felt like they were sitting in a warming drawer or on the grill for hours. This place probably could have easily been at least a 3, but alas, multiple not-so-good things happened when I ate there for dinner a couple days ago. 1. Very acidic salad - a little puddle of red wine vinegar was left on my plate after I ate it 1.a. For the salad they charge you $3 for adding feta, which was definitely needed to combat the acidity but our server did not mention the hefty feta charge (you get 2 little sticks of feta) 2. This was definitely the clincher: terribly dry chicken. Dry as a poor chicken that died of dehydration in the desert and then got zapped in the oven. It was definitely burned on the outside, so I'm not sure why it was even served. Two other friends ordered the same thing and one of them also complained about dryness while the other's looked not as bad and was apparently not so dry. Even the dark meat was quite dry. 3. No bread was given until we asked for it (on the menu it says that anyone who orders the Athenian dinners gets bread and butter, so technically we should have gotten three, but after asking halfway through the meal we were only given one) 3.a. Aforementioned bread was not good and came with those dinky little airplane-style packaged butters. read more

Oh my gosh, where do I start. This is my all time favorite Greek restaurant in Chicago. The service is always good. The food is amazing every single time. I have zero complaints. This play is cash only, but not worries, they are connected to Glascott's Saloon where you can take out cash AND order an alcoholic beverage for you meal at Athenian Room. I love the neighborhood and parking has never been a huge issue for me. I've had the kalamata chicken and BBQ chicken. The kalamata chicken is heavenly and I crave it far too often. The sauce with the chicken and Greek fries is out of this world. I've never had a gyro with vinaigrette but this joint does it that way. The gyro platter was very generous with gyro meat. At the bottom of the plate, they put vinaigrette. I actually found it interesting and tasty enough BUT I thought there was too much of it. So next time I go, I will ask for it on the side (hopefully they would do that). There were a lot of new servers (for the college kids), so service was a little lacking. But overall, the gyro was pretty good. read more

I've been wanting to try Athenian Room for such a long time, because everyone says it's amazing. This week I finally got my chance, and I can now say that you should listen to all the hype! One of their biggest draws during these warm months is definitely their patio area. Right off of Halsted, the Athenian's outdoor seating was buzzing with energy, yet still far enough off the main road where I could hear my waitress when she spoke to me. We were seated at the end of the patio furthest from Glascott's, which is also where Athenian handles their valet service. The first thing I noticed on the menu is that they didn't have an alcohol section. This really surprised me, but when I asked our waitress, she informed me that Athenian Room has a relationship with the bar next door, Glascott's Saloon, and that a waitress from that establishment would be coming out to take our drink order. The more you know. After the drink situation was sorted, I was hungry and ready for some freakin' Greek food. I learned at Athenian Room that my boyfriend knows a scary amount about this particular cuisine, so I let him order our appetizers for us: Taramosalata, which the menu defined as "Greek caviar," but it was more hummus-looking in my opinion, and Spanakopita, aka spinach pie. Both were fabulous and delicious and I want more now. I knew immediately that I wanted something with gyro meat, and of course Athenian's menu offered nothing short of everything I could've dreamt of. I decided on the gyros salad, because it had a ton of gyro meat on top, with pita bread and tzatziki sauce on the side. Hell yeah. I love tzatziki sauce SO much. Next time I might just order a bowl of it and pretend it's soup or something so it's less shameful. My boyfriend ordered the pork tenderloin shish kebob and scarfed it down, so I'm going to guess that was great, too. I'm so glad we finally tried dinner at Athenian Room, because the patio was fabulous when it was 65-70 degrees out, the food was delicious and well-priced (the whole bill was less than $40 before tip), and the Greek theme they had going was really on-point. The *one* thing that I wasn't the biggest fan of was that before we were finished eating, the waitress put the check on the table. She was very sweet and of course said "whenever you're ready, no rush," but neither of us at the table were finished eating or had pushed our plates away. I thought at first maybe that they were closing, but then realized that wasn't for another hour or so. Also, there were a few free tables both outside and inside, so we weren't holding up a wait list. It's always a little uncomfortable to have that check sitting there looking at you, when you're not ready to be finished yet. Next time I'd just like to be asked if I want dessert or anything. Other than that, dinner here was very enjoyable, and when we were finished eating, we kept our tab open at Glascott's and sat at the bar there, which is always fun. If you haven't tried this place, this is the summer to do it! read more

The fries were too greasy for my liking here, but the chicken kabobs were fantastic and the Greek salad was crisp and fresh. All around excellent option for carryout during the Covid pandemic. Big plate of meat! Really good gyro but was only able to finish about half and even that made me very full! This place is byob but you can go to the bar next door and get drinks and bring the back to your table which was nice. We did this with a bottle of wine. This cozy place is located in a walkable neighborhood. We decided to come to this place based on the recommendation of Tina Fey while she was on "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction", and it did not disappoint. I ordered the Chicken Kalamata which was perfectly seasoned and moist, accompanied by a wonderfully crispy crust. The chicken is served on a bed of Greek fries which to my surprise, were not soggy despite sitting in the juices from the chicken. This dish was *chef kisses fingers* everything I imagined and more. My brother order the gyro which was delicious as well. The lamb was tender and had a nice flavor with a nice crunch on one side. Outside of the delicious food, a major plus for this place was the service. From the jump Roberto showed love and was friendly as well as our server Aggy (not sure about the spelling). Simply a classic Lincoln Park Greek Dining establishment. A family-run restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating (weather permitting). Ok, we have been going to the Athenian Room for several years (maybe over 25 yrs?) It is a casual and comfortable place. They don't like the "cell phone" deal as ppl think they can yap away on the cell phones. It is frowned down upon in this joint, as it should be. Ok, the food is absolutely delish!!! Fresh Mediterranean grub, tasty and healthy. The owners know who we are and frequently bring us new foods to try- so kind. The Greek chicken, salads and Greek fries are so good!! Prices are moderate, but well worth it. It is usually crowded, so just wait your turn. It is a fun atmosphere located near Halsted and Webster. My kids even love eating there, a huge bonus. There is nothing negative to report, just good food, great owners and attentive waitstaff. As long as their doors are open, we will continue to frequent this place. Oh, by the way, we do live 2 hours away, near WI border. When we lived in the city, 15 yrs ago, we obviously went on a more frequent basis. Now we make the trip because, it is worth it. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. When you come here you have two options (not really but ignore the rest of the menu... I'm sure it's great but trust me on this one) either the chicken or the steak. I prefer the steak because it's an amazing deal and never chewy but the chicken is also a good option. It comes with salad and make sure to get feta with the salad. It's amazing and also really good on the bread. The fries will be soggy and usually I don't like soggy fries, but this is an exception. We found this place while searching the hours of greek town restaurants and realized that this was closer than going all the way to greek town. The Food was very good, as was the service and the prices were reasonable. However, I was annoyed when I opened the quite small menu of mainly kabobs, salads and burgers. Not much authentic Greek food for a restaurant named Athenian Inn. There was not a notice on the door, nor I did not notice on the menu, if it was there at all, and the waitress forgot to mention it at the start that this is CASH ONLY. Luckily I had enough cash on me but if you don't they direct you to the bar next door to their ATM. I found this annoying. So If you want greek food that is not kabobs this is not the place. However, if you want a nice meal in the lincoln park area with nice atmosphere, good service that's better than a diner or burger joint give it a try but remember to BRING CASH. read more

I have heard a lot of hype about this place and that the chicken Kalamata is Tina Feys favorite meal in Chicago so I had to try it out for myself. I of course ordered the Chicken Kalamata style (Tina Fey special) and it came with a super fresh side salad. My friend and I also split a side of feta for our salads, which I would recommend. This place is a neighborhood staple and has been around forever. It's a no frills, family run business. Decent food and often packed.

Great place. Convenient location. Stopped on the way to a Cubs game. I really didn't expect this to be as good as it was. Chicken Kalamata style was much better than expected. Chicken on French fries...what's the big deal right? We came in on a Monday night around 7 PM, and the place was definitely packed! They have a little area outside but you can eat, which is really nice especially in the summer. We were seated pretty much probably, but the waitress took quite a while to come around to take orders. We got the gyro dinner and a half chicken that everyone kept on raving about. Nonetheless, both were incredible. She forgot to bring out the salad, so she brought it out after the meal itself, and I didn't even touch it because it was not even half comparable to the meal. Overall, it look like a really cute family owned place with the husband and wife in the front taking delivery orders. Prices are definitely reasonable for the large amount of food that you get. Another classic Chicago tradition! First started coming here as a toddler nearly 40 years ago, while my parents have been coming here since the mid 1970s when it was only takeout and operating in the first room. Over the years they added the adjoining dining rooms and the outdoor seating, while the quality has remained the same. The menu is simple, but everything is great: burgers, gyros, roasted chicken, skirt steak, chicken shishkebab, pita bread, feta cheese, and of course, Greek fries. Glascott's bar next door is fantastic as well! They have a connecting door next to the kitchen. Since Athenian Room doesn't have a liquor license, you walk next door, grab a drink and bring it back to the restaurant. Or you can order food and eat at the bar.
