This place is awesome. Easily some of the best (if not THE best) seafood in the greater Danbury area. The menu is a tad pricey, but as I always say, you get what you pay for. This restaurant has become one of my fast favorites. The services is top notch. Karen, is far and away the best server we have had at any local restaurant. She's wildly knowledgeable about all items on the menu and is a top-notch mixologist. And while I never frequented this space prior to its renovation, I understand that the upgrade is a massive one. I can say that the dining room and bar area are clean, pleasant, and very well conceived. If you haven't been here, seriously, try this spot out. *under new management* Updating my review as there has been some changes. The place got a makeover! Which is very nice but I wish it had more of theme. It's just generic decor. It's not bad, just not memorable. The menu changed a lot too. It's much smaller but the prices went up! So keep that in mind. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the new menu. I ordered one of the steaks and didn't realize it would come like pictured. It was tasty, but the menu lacks detail. I had a few questions about other items too. All the food we got was good! Probably the best Portuguese restaurant I have ever been to in Connecticut! The chicken soup brought back memories from when I went to Portugal and how my grandmother made it. Went here for Mother's Day and both the clams in the appetizer and main meal had sandy grit taste. Order seafood and the shrimp and lobster tasted off. It was a rotten old taste. This great Portuguese restaurant has recently reopened under new owners, there have been many changes but for the better. The atmosphere was warm & inviting, the place felt fresh & clean. They are still working on their decor, bringing in Portuguese flair with a modern twist. The menu has been updated to which the food is authentic, Fresh & full of flavor. This is such a hidden gem in Danbury. We love the authentic Portuguese food in a clean, nicely decorated interior. The menu includes a range of seafood and meats. All of my family and I have eaten lunches and dinners at the Atlantic about once very two months for the past 25 years and every single experience has been wonderful. Having traveled and lived all over the world, we consider ourselves true foodies with very high standards. Their food is authentic, menu quite varied, and prices are very fair. For the past decade, they've been making excellent Brazilian caipirinas in addition to their normal bar services. In addition, their desserts are world class (as is their cappuccino.) We've also purchased their spectacular chocolate mousse cake several times for special occasions and, while fairly expensive, it serves about 30 people! I, personally, like both the main dining room atmosphere and all of the waitresses and have NEVER had poor service, although it is accurate to say that the restaurant isn't particularly fancy and sometimes the waitresses are busy--something that I appreciate a lot because any change from the family atmosphere would result in a price increase. Normally, I expect any restaurant to get a mix of reviews, but I must say I get really angry when I see negative and unfair reviews about one of my favorite places. One thing to remember--I find the restaurant crowd more variable than usual--i.e., sometimes it's almost empty and sometimes there's a party and open tables are scarce. Or Portugal or Brazil are having a major soccer match and the restaurant is full of fans. These are special occasions for us but might put off someone looking for a romantic date, so it's worth phoning in advance to gauge the scene. read more

Only one thing separating 5 stars and 4. In the seafood paella, no need to use imitation crab. Having a while lobster, plenty of shrimp, mussels and bay scallops would have sufficed. It is very difficult to find good Portuguese food, even in Provincetown as everything has become very middle of the road in an attempt to appeal to as many people as possible. But the Atlantic offers the best in real old school Portuguese dining. Try the Espetada (beef Shis-ka-bob) or the Bife na Pedra (Steak on a Stone). Service is friendly and prices are very reasonable. Every time we come to Danbury, CT, we must stop at a Portuguese restaurant, usually 2 or 3 times before going back west. Atlantic has been our number one choice. But this time I was not impressed with the overall experience. Mainly because of potatoes served on both plates we ordered The chips that came with the steak didn't look or taste like they were made to order and the potato served with cod fish were small round potatoes, not bad but we were expecting "batatas ao murro" - a whole different experience. read more

* Wonderful Portuguese * Approaching this place I could smell the wonderful smells of smoke emanating from the kitchen exhaust. A very good sign, which had me scouring the grilled portions of the menu to get that flavour. Entering we found the place to be half crowded bar and half rather empty dining room (at lunch time). We chose to sit in the dining room for lunch. Even though the majority of people were in the bar (it was crowded in there), the waitress still provided efficient and friendly service in the dining room area. They brought a complimentary bread basket with Portuguese rolls. The crust was crunchy, with a pillow soft centre. These went well with butter - but could have been eaten alone as well easily. A good start! The Sardinhas Assadas (grilled sardines) were a very generous portion of six large sardines! The skin had been nicely charred, and the inside flesh was moist. They were very fresh and not fishy at all. A squeeze of lemon over the top and these were masterpieces! The Frango de Churrasco (grilled chicken) had a wonderful smoky crisp skin and perfectly tender well seasoned meat on the inside. The skin had a slight hint of spice to really round out the flavours. The portion was an entire half chicken. Delicious! Just to try some of the non-grilled items the Camarao Alinho (garlic shrimp) had at least 20 shrimp on the plate which were very fresh, plump, and mixed well with the garlicy sauce to highlight the natural shrimp flavour. Tasty! Was way too full for dessert, but had to try an espresso - which they did amazingly well. It had a nice rich crema, and a smooth finish. A perfect shot to end a wonderful meal! It's with great calamity that I give this 2 stars. I used to be such a big fan of this place from the first time I came here (back in 2006). I used to always get the Garlic Shrimp appetizer and wouldn't let the server take the dish away (after we finished) because I had bigger plans for the remaining sauce. I would then get the Steak on a Stone and pour that remaining sauce on top of it. I was always in heaven when I came here. I even brought many people here for a "first time" experience and we always left very happy and very full. Sadly, something has changed in the last 2 years because the quality has taken a sharp decline. I went once and the food was less than desirable - specifically the quality of the steak. As a consumer, I thought perhaps that in order to not pass rising food costs to the customer, they may have chosen a lesser quality steak. I also thought, this might have been a fluke and would return again. The next time I came - it was the same thing. The steak was very tough (despite my med-rare temp) and stringy. It's not a good thing when one needs to fight and "saw" through a steak because of the tough strings that make it up. Until someone I know tells me that the quality of the years past has returned, I will merely drive by with the proverbial tear in my eye of what was once a favority place. read more

In terms of food, the appetizers were very good--shrimp in garlic sauce and chourica over a flame. However, when the paelha arrived, the lobster smelled heavily of ammonia (indicating bad lobster). Everyone is friendly and the food is always fresh and delicious. I almost always order the grilled cod with baked potatoes. The fish specials are always good options.
