Spending a few days in the Danbury area, and the wife was craving a Lobster Roll so we sought out Rein Osteria via search. A charming woodsy setting on a hill without any clutter around a very picturesque scene for this Texan. We had Calamari and Ahi Tuna for appetizers and Lobsters Roll, Fish Basket, Salmon Quinoa Bowl for entree. The Lobster Rolls were buttery savory delight on soft toasted bread. Salmon and Fish Basket was absolutely delicious and hands down this was our best meal while visiting the area. The Service was friendly,helpful and attentive during our meal. My husband took me here for my birthday dinner months ago. The inside is cozy and welcoming and I loved the bar. We were seated by the window. I will say it can get quite loud in there when full which it was on a Saturday night. We shared a salad to start- it was some sort of winter salad with spinach. For mains he got a steak- the steak itself was well cooked and flavorful. The mashed potatoes normally his favorite side were quite bland. He had me try them and I agreed. I ordered the mushroom ravioli. I went to take my first bite however and found they'd brought out the lobster ravioli instead. After awhile of waiting they brought out the correct meal. They did comp the ravioli which was very nice and aside from the small mix up we had great service throughout. We'll definitely come back but it is pricier than our average meal out. We had a wonderful anniversary dinner on February 5th. We sat at the bar for drinks and an appetizer. The bartender was so attentive. Our first drinks were on the house...he was so excited to hear that we were married 60 years. Moved to a table for dinner. We had crab cakes as a second appetizer which were delicious as well as our seafood dinners. I had lobster with fettuccine and veggies. My husband had pasta seafood. The former Widow Browns was our neighborhood family restaurant as well as our rowdy late evening hangout when I worked the 3-11 shift at Danbury Hospital. I didn't think anyone could do it justice. But here we are! So enjoyed the speakeasy vibes of the black walls and ceiling, beautiful but cozy booths and the separate bar and party room for those busy nights or reserved special occasions. The menu was a step up from Widows pub fare, but not pretentious or the extreme price increase I expected. The place is on a hillside - parking at the bottom, restaurant in the middle, and more parking at the top. A restaurant sandwich. The brussel sprout appetizer was huge - definitely enough to share, although you may not feel that way about the creamy burrata. They let me switch out the brunch home fries for French fries with the burger, and put on a little side salad. I was there mid-afternoon and it was really quiet, but they were clearly arranging tables for dinner (which is fine) and I felt they were trying to push me out based on the questions of my water. read more

I visited this place on a Thursday night. Initially, it seemed welcoming--the host was friendly and seated us promptly. Unfortunately, the experience quickly declined once our server arrived. They were dismissive, gave us uncomfortable looks, and their attitude made us feel unwelcome. The food was mediocre and not worth the price. Most dishes lacked flavor, especially the chicken wings, which had no seasoning at all. Throughout the meal, we were consistently overlooked by the staff. Despite being clearly visible, we had to repeatedly ask for assistance while employees stood nearby without offering help. What made the experience particularly upsetting was the sense that we were being treated differently based on our appearance. The behavior felt discriminatory and left us feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. Overall, I would not recommend this place. Our food took a little longer than normal and while our group ordered the same thing, the portions of the chicken differed noticeably. We went here for my birthday, and unfortunately it was a big mistake. From the start, the service was disappointing. Our waitress didn't tell us the specials, and before we even ordered dinner--right after we finished ordering appetizers--she asked if she could take our menus. It felt rushed immediately. While we were still eating our appetizer, someone came over and asked if we were done, even though it was obvious we weren't. Then during our main course, the same person came back again. I was literally taking my last bite, still on my fork, and my husband was still eating when he leaned his elbow on our table and asked, "Are you done?" That was it for me. We came expecting a nice place to enjoy a relaxed birthday dinner, but the constant rushing completely ruined the experience. We had planned to order another round of drinks and dessert, but after being rushed through the entire meal, we decided to leave and go elsewhere. The staff really needs training. This team knows what's up. On a somewhat wacky evening, just ahead of a snowstorm, we were lucky enough to dine with the gracious Gabi, a budding sommelier, host/hostess, and wait person all rolled into one. We were somewhat on the clock for a few reasons, among them the impending snowstorm, what we knew would be an early morning start the next day, and a desire to get the staff home safe. That affected how we ate and experienced. Under most other conditions we would've lingered, had dessert, chatted with the folks at the bar and wait persons, but as it was, we opted for efficiency! The food was quite excellent across the board. We don't dine out at top tier establishments in Danbury often so cannot make any comparisons on that metric, but do note that Rein would fit right in among top tier UWS neighborhood establishments in NYC. We again had the ROASTED BEET SALAD ($15; Spring Mix Lettuce, Roasted Red and Golden Beets, Avocado, Grape Tomatoes, Roasted Almonds, Crumbled Goat Cheese, White Balsamic Vinaigrette) to start. We found the salad to be well conceived and prepared with a nice balance of excellent ingredients. The beets were freshly roasted (e.g. not canned or jarred), the avocado ripe, the almond slices crisp, goat cheese and dressing moderately applied and not overwhelming. SEARED SCALLOPS (GF) ($36; Pearl Couscous, Diced Bell Peppers, Corn Cream Sauce) were perfectly prepared -- and I'm a somewhat tough customer when it comes to seafood. Scallops were not huge, but were winter sweet, beautifully seared to just the right temperature, and treated with the respect that such a pristine ingredient was due. They paired well with the light, faintly sweet corn cream sauce -- not entirely seasonal, but brilliantly matched. An order of PORK TENDERLOIN ($26; Roasted Tenderloin, Spring Veggies, Smashed Potatoes, Marsala Sauce) made the primary consumer very happy except for the fact that "spring veggies" included mushrooms. Once removed, they deemed the broccoli and carrots palatable. The pork was moist and the potatoes beautifully crisped if a touch undersalted. The HALF CHICKEN SCARPARIELLO ($26; Sautéed Peppers, Onions, Hot & Sweet Sausage, Roasted Potatoes, Pepperoncini Peppers, Roasted Garlic, White Wine Brown Sauce) was again fabulous, the chicken flawlessly tender and moist, all bathed in that gorgeously flavorful stew. Rein makes one of most stellar versions of this dish that we know of. A one inch cut of NEW YORK STRIP STEAK 14oz ($40; Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Sautéed Spinach, House Made Demi-Glace) made our little carnivore happy as it always does and was cooked to their requested medium rare. The accompaniments were all competently executed, though if we were to nitpick, the spinach was slightly tougher than we like to make it at home. (We probably overcook it.) Mashed potatoes were of the silky, creamy, sort, piped onto the plate. The list of wines by the glass wasn't overly erudite, but what we tried was well curated and, importantly, from bottles that had not been open for an overly long time. Gabi did a great job of suggesting pairings for our food (Sancerre with scallops, a Michael David petite petit with the pork tenderloin). A recent trip to Vermont skiing had me make a pit-stop in Danbury, CT. So we decided to try Rein again to see how they were doing. Needless to say, they did not disappoint. From the moment we walked in we were greet with a friendly welcome from the hostess. We decided to sit at the bar, and the bartenders, Jared and Dani made us feel at home. The drinks, were fabulous, a Manhattan for me, and an Espresso Martini for my Wife. On to appetizers and soup. Both the Italian Wedding soup and New England clam chowder were absolutely outstanding, flavors were perfect. Next, eggplant rollatini and burrata salad, fantastic. My entree was the Filet Oscar, and my Wife had the Lamb Chops, both cooked as ordered and simply delicious! Treat yourself, and stop in to Rein. read more

We made an 8pm reservation through Open Table. We arrived at 8. We weren't sure where to check in, but the friendly bartender (sorry, I forgot her name) told us to check in at the hostess desk around the bend. We waited there. few minutes and then a young guy came over. He told us it would be about 10-15 more minutes. We sat at the bar to wait out our time and have a drink. She was very friendly and helpful. About 15 minutes later, another couple came in and were seated pretty much right away. Then 5 minutes later another couple came in and was seated right away, all by the same guy that had us waiting at the bar. I thought that was pretty rude. The Bartender must have heard me say something to my husband. She spoke to a manager and had us seated a few minutes later. Thankfully she was paying attention, or I think we would have been waiting all night. Ali was our server and was very attentive, knowledgable and friendly. Our food was very good. I would go back for the regular menu to try out new things. First time back in the area in two years - made it a priority to get back here. Everything about this restaurant is excellent. Great menu, wonderful ambiance, great offering of cocktails, wines, and beer, and really good service with large portions at reasonable prices. Food is excellent - enjoyed crispy Brussels sprouts, burata with tomatoes, and French onion soup for appetizers. Enjoyed a NY strip with a roasted beet salad, and it was excellent. Fish and chips were also really great and the truffle fries were to die for. My only regret is that the appetizers and main courses were so good we left no room for dessert. Food, drinks, ambiance, service....I give 10s across the board. But since this is Yelp, I'll have to settle for five stars. What a wonderful treat our visit to Rein Osteria was. We had a hankering from some seafood but our usual go to place over in Carmel is closed for the season so I did some searching on Yelp and Rein popped up. I took a quick peek at the menu and one look told me that this could be a great option so I booked a reservation. From the outside, Rein looks warm and inviting and that feeling continues when you walk in. The room is beautiful, big and airy. It's lively but not overly loud so the noise issue that some earlier reviewers mention has seemed to have been remedied. The staff from start to finish was great, really top notch. We were seated fairly quickly and had a great table by the window and our amazing server popped by to check in. We quickly had water, bread and my Hold The Reins Old Fashioned. We started with the incredible Brussels Sprouts and a shrimp cocktail. Those sprouts really do deserve all the raves they get. And the shrimp cocktail was terrific too...jumbo shrimp and a delightful cocktail sauce. For my entree I had the crabmeat stuffed sole over vegetables and it was outstanding. I enjoyed every bite. The fish was tender and the crabmeat was delicious. The sauce was light and perfect...really a great dish. My husband had the branzino which he loved as well. My compliments to the chef for everything. Along the way I had an apple pie cocktail which was perfect for the fall season and then I tried a pumpkin spice cocktail for dessert which was equally amazing. Kudos to the bar staff for creating such delicious cocktails that complimented the mood of the season so well. Although we're trying not to overeat these days, we decided to split a piece of the pumpkin cheesecake which was also amazing. The entire meal was really terrific and we were already discussing the five star reviews we were planning on giving Rein when a manager stopped by to chat and see how our meal was. We shared our wonderful experience and when the bill came, saw that we got our dessert and a drink on the house, which was lovely and then made me wish we could give the restaurant six stars. Rein will definitely be going into our restaurant rotation. We spend most of the week in Manhattan and usually are in Danbury only on the weekends but we'll be back and I can't wait to take visiting friends to show them another example of the exceptional dining that can be found here. read more

We love taking them to Rein not just because it's within 15 minutes (literally sits behind the Connecticut border sign), the staff is friendly and professional - the food is consistent and excellent. He had the filet and I had the scallops. Both were very good. The corn sauce for the scallops was a little strange but personally just wasn't my kind of thing. Drinks were great. Service was kind. The vibe is also really nice. You can be casual but it also is nice enough to get dressed if you want. The only confusion really is there isn't a hostess. First time there. Last time there! First off soup was handed to me from over the guest sitting opposite of me. The person handing the soup neglected to warn me that the handle on the bowl was hot! I was burned! Blistered burned!! Then the meals come out. Again handed over the heads of opposite guests. The New York strip was awful! Was not cooked properly and was so skinny they should have been embarrassed to serve it! The filet was bad! I mean tasted spoiled! They took my meal off the check and offered to buy me dessert. Went here for my mother's birthday and then a week later, came for mine! I couldn't get over how delicious the filet minion was the first time I went (I ordered without the glaze). The second time I went for my birthday, it was really good; maybe a little more on the salty side for the outer layer. The mashed potatoes that came with it were also very good too.
