This is a really awesome place to shop for high end audio / video components. I hadn't been in there for a few years, but I recently called them trying to find a tv cabinet that nobody else had in stock and couldn't get for me within less than a few weeks. I spoke with the owner and he promised he could get the stand (BDI Avion II) by Monday of the next week and have it delivered on Tuesday. I thought there must be something wrong, like maybe it was the old model or the wrong one -- maybe damaged or something, because NOBODY else could get it. He said they have a great relationship with BDI and they could definitely get it to me by Tuesday morning (they didn't have it in stock but had it shipped from BDI to their store). I was really skeptical but ordered it anyway and hoped it would be the right one. They also offered to beat Magnolia's price by $100 which was lower than I had even seen it on the internet from "unknown" mail order places. Wow, I had already told them nobody can get it for me and I only asked for a price MATCH -- but $100 cheaper -- awesome! I didn't want to take off work Tuesday and I had to leave for work by 10am, so the owner asked the delivery guys to come in early to get it to me by 9am. I was afraid they would be angry having to get to work early because of me, but not at all -- they were both extremely friendly and cheerful (try getting Best Buy delivery guys to come in early so you don't have to miss work -- HA!) They assembled it in my living room, and did a perfect job. The cabinet is beautiful! And the experience could not have been better! And they were done and gone well before 10am as promised. I will definitely be shopping here more in the future. The sales people really know their stuff too. These aren't high school kids working part time after school, they are true audiophiles. I have been shopping at Best Buy for the past few years just because of convenience and I try not to go into Santa Monica if I don't have to (parking, traffic, etc), but this experience really reminded me it's worth dealing with a little traffic to get such great service. Best customer service I may have ever had. I went in to buy a pair of Monitor Silver 8s and they misquoted me the price - they quoted me $300 less than they should have. When the guy's brother came back into the store he told him he had quoted from the wrong model - however even though I offered to pay the higher price he said no, it was their mistake, and they would only charge me the lower price. This isn't because they are up charging - I looked online and the best price I could find was indeed $300 more than what I paid. WOW. Now that is customer service because they could have very easily just told me it was too bad and I had to pay the higher price. They are very nice and knowledgable. While they are in an upstairs office and have a limited amount of equipment in the floor, if you know what you want, or have ensured they carry the brands you are looking for, then this is the place to go. Even if you don't know what you want you can wander in and check out what they have and give a listen/watch (they do have probably 20 or more speaker types you can check out). I will make all my future audio purchases from this store. I'm a new top fan. read more

Short Version: Great customer service and amazing prices that significantly beat those I could find for the same equipment at reputable online vendors even when sales tax is taken into consideration. Detailed Version: I did a bit of research online to get a general idea of the features I'm looking for, brands I was most interested in, and relative cost across several options (online, local, etc.). So I wasn't completely unprepared, though I'm no audio gear head either. Since I'm not an audiophile, I wanted to really hear the speakers before I purchased a set (rather than online). I'm also willing to pay a slightly higher price for the benefits of local shopping. First impressions were great. As soon as I walked in, I got the feeling that they really valued my business. Though the salesmen was busy, the owner walked right up and shook my hand, gave a quick tour, etc. until the main salesmen was available. I ended up purchasing the Denon 1611, 4x NHT Absolute Zeros, and an NHT Center speaker. I'm delaying the purchase of my sub till next month to spread the cost out a tiny bit. The Denon was a slightly higher model than I went in looking for as they did not carry the lowest end, but was only about 50 dollars more. Now for the kicker and why this places gets a resounding 5 Stars. Not only was the customer service outstanding and friendly, but they actual significantly _beat_ any price I could find for the same hardware online. That was completely unexpected. The savings more than made up for the sales tax I had to pay by not purchasing online. But it doesn't stop there, they didn't have my speakers in stock and had to order them. I mentioned it'd be a shame to have that beautiful tuner sitting on a shelf doing nothing. So they offered to pull a couple of floor models as loaners until my equipment comes in. Stellar. All of this and I get the attention, walk in experience, and warm fuzzy feelings of shopping at a local family business. read more

I haven't used AV City's services extensively, but my experiences so far have been very positive. I went in a couple weekends ago to buy a couple of Sonos speakers, which didn't happen to be in stock. So Tan had someone deliver them to me, right at my workplace, for no extra charge. That is very much appreciated, and I was so happy supporting a locally-owned business that when I decided to add another piece of equipment a week later, I called AV City again. Tan spent plenty of time talking with me about my purchases and various options, the equipment has all worked perfectly, and their service appears to be excellent. But so far I haven't had to return anything or get service on any equipment, so I can't give an unqualified rave. Just at present their landlord has them squeezed into a tiny third-floor space while some sort of work goes on, but they're hopeful they'll be able to get back down there soon and that the space will be better than ever. But for now, don't be put off by having to go up in the elevator, or by the small cramped space. They know their stuff, they care about their customers, and they deserve your business. read more

If you go any place else you're wasting your Time...(ESPECIALLY the big box stores). Tan gives personal attention and will sit you down and carefully go over all your options. He follows up with customer service years later and even remembers you by name!!! (try doing that Best Buy!!) World Class Exceptional Service, Products, Pricing and Installation I am an executive with a very well known company renowned for it's expertise in customer service and customer experience and I have clients all over the world across many industries that I consult with regularly, so the bar is very high for me in garnering 5 stars and exceeding my expectations. I have purchased from high-end national retailers in the past (e.g., Crutchfield, hhGregg, etc.) . Audio Video City products and prices were just as good or better, which was a positive surprise given they are local. Even more, AVC provided greater value and savings overall and incredible service as well as being more flexible for scheduling deliveries and installation. Equally important, they showed in actions they valued me as a customer and a person. I am outfitting my new place in Santa Monica and needed to purchase: Large, High-end 4K HDTV Soundsystem / Soundbar Media Center Blue Ray Player Wall Mounting brackets for tv and sound system Tan, the owner/operator, treated me well throughout the process, providing helpful recommendations consistent with my own research. His prices were equal on the products to every major chain and he found ways to help me save on other items where he had more room to give. In fact, when the price of my t..v. dropped by $1,000 dollars based on a manufacturer incentive within a few days of my purchase, he went to bat for me with Sony to ensure I could receive the savings. He also provided a higher quality media center/newer version at no additional cost to what I had already paid based on a newer model being available. He worked with me on dates and installation. He communicated effectively and frequently. That is the kind of integrity and ethical business practices that seems all to rare these days and which in my own business practices I also employ as well as how I and everyone wants to be treated as customers. Their installer is also world class- he has done homes of the rich and famous so to speak with incredibly complex and high end technology that made my installation seem simple in comparison. He was professional, efficient, respectful and treated my home and everything as if it was his own. He also took the time to walk me through the set-ups, remotes, menus, etc. after ensuring everything was properly installed, working and ensuring I was happy with the job he did. There are alot of options out there, but none provided the combination of world class service, products, pricing, installation and treatment. The few negative yelp reviews below are so far from my experience and what Tan and his team, provided that I can't relate to those at all. My experience was completely 5 stars! Tan provided gave me such a great customer experience AND value, that he earned my business and won my loyalty. Small place PACKED with HDTVs. I bought mine here a couple months back, from a salesman named "Tan". He was knowledgeable, and was willing to make a good deal (I suggest offering cash). He did push me a little too hard towards a Hitachi (with unimpressive color and picture quality), but I wound up getting a beautiful Panasonic 50" HDTV for far less than I had seen it elsewhere. He said he gave me a deal because I was friends with a previous customer, but I'm fairly certain I would have gotten the same deal if I had just walked in off the street. read more

The owner and salesmen were very personable (particularly Anthony, whom I dealt with) and patiently answered all of my questions while carefully explaining which aspects were important in the LCDs and surround systems that I was looking at. I must say I had a fantastic experience here. I wanted to find a Monitor Audio authorized dealer in Los Angeles. Well I found a great one! It's rare these days to find an audio store to have an open door policy without making an appointment, but this one allowed me to walk right in. I wasn't even planning to purchase anything that day, but he had told me that he could give me a fantastic deal on a center speaker that I have been wanting to get for about a decade. After a call and discussion with the owner, I knew exactly what I wanted, was given a fair price and to top it all off, the Parasound amp and preamp that I bought were special ordered and HAND DELIVERED to my door 3 days after placing the order! Just a brief plug for A/V City. I got married last year and we ended spending our wedding cash on a home theater system. With Ken Crane's gone, I wasn't sure where to go and wasn't happy with my experiences at Magnolia and other local AV stores until I just stumbled across their site on the Internet. We have had insanely great service and LOVE our system, which we've had for just over a year. They helped troubleshoot with a turntable that I added onto the system and my wife just bought me speakers for my home office. Tan is fantastic, but it's Kenny Chau who's been a godsend-- he's a straight shooter and helped us work out all sorts of odd issues with speaker placement in our condo. Their prices are good, but as with quality A/V equipment, you get what you pay for-- and I'm going to have these components and speakers for a long, long time. Tan and Hung are brothers who co-own the place and from the moment I first walked in the place I recognized a genuine interest in listening to my problems with an ear (and an eye) toward finding solutions . They want to make a dollar but in the old-fashioned way, they want to earn it. They have the staff, knowledge and skills to deal at every level of advice, purchase, installation and follow-up in the very specialized world of audio and visual equipment. I went in once after many years wondering what I had bought quite some time before. In less than a minute they had a copy of the original receipt we could refer to so I could match speaker brands to add to my system. After finding the perfect THX certified speakers they sold them to me at a discount and they perfected my at home theater system. Later, they installed a wall mounted living room flat screen television for me that was done so quickly and professionally that I still smile when I think of it. I can stop in at any time for help and advice as I did yesterday to seek information on Tivo. They knew all the little tricks it would have taken me time and money to discover. They are an asset to the Santa Monica community of businesses and to each individual looking for help in the ever complicated world of audio and visual reproduction gear. Thinking we'd prefer to support a small, local business when buying new stereo equipment we went to Audio Video City and talked with them about what we wanted. We assumed it'd be a little more expensive than going to a larger chain. Long story short we spent somewhere around $7,000 for a stereo system we've enjoyed for about a year and a half. It (mostly) got us what we were going for. A leaky roof took out our receiver, requiring a replacement. Not their fault, obviously. Going back to purchase a replacement, however, we asked about an additional set of speakers for the kitchen, something we'd asked about and gave up on with the original purchase. They recommended a Sonos system, which we purchased along with the new receiver. The installers came to install it all. As they did they realized that they hadn't brought the right equipment for the full installation, AND informed us that the Sonos system wasn't going to tie-in to all aspects of the stereo unit--as we'd understood when we purchased the system. We returned the Sonos system, since it didn't do what we'd asked. Here's where it goes bad: The installers spent hours waiting for colleagues from AVCity to bring equipment, which ended up taking two trips to get right. I haven't received a credit for that Sonos system, somewhere around $400. AVCity won't respond to my calls or messages about it. I suspect that they're thinking it's a wash because we haven't been billed for the installation. The problem is that the installation took a good two hours longer than it should have because they didn't bring the correct equipment. The communication was been less-than-adequate to begin with, but the refusal to respond to my calls and questions about the refund and paying only what we should've owed for a smooth installation is unacceptable. And thus, my review. Sadly, it leaves us wishing we'd gone to one of the national chains--exactly what we were hoping to avoid. read more
