I booked a group of 8 for this and the whole experience was awful. I booked this because it stated it was on the beach which it was not. Also they stated if it rained, which it had done all week, it would be inside. We got poured on during dinner ruined everything, they handed out rain ponchos after we were soaked and our food was ruined. The show was ok but the view was limited. This was the perfect luau for us to try, as we were staying at the Sheraton, and we liked the idea of the luau being outside on the beach! That being said, the only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that my husband and I are just not luau people I think lol. Definitely a touristy thing to do, but if that's your cup of tea, you should check this luau out for sure. We got the VIP tickets, so I got a flower lei and my husband got the brown seeded lei, while all of the other guests got smaller shell leis. Also included in our VIP tickets were premier seating near the stage as well as a bento box of appetizers different than that was offered in the buffet line. There were a good number of performers and local artisans at the luau as well. The food was okay- we had better Hawaiian food at other restaurants and food truck setups elsewhere. But it is unlimited! It was also open bar, but note that the only drinks included were select wines, beers, and on our day the cocktails were mai tais and blue Hawaiians. The entertainment was awesome- the MC described what island each dance came from and the significance of it, making for an even more special experience. Overall, if you want to go to a luau, I'd definitely recommend this one. If you've already been to a luau or are just not a luau/touristy person, no need. read more

After researching all of the luaus on the island, I decided to book reservations with Aulil Luau (hosted by the Sherton). The outdoor/ocean view setting was the deciding factor, as I figured that would give the most authentic type of experience. My first words of advice is to book as early as possible! Two months in advance, I tried to purchase two tickets for premiere seating (a $20 upgrade which will give you early entry, seating in the first two rows by the stage, and flower lei's) and they were already sold out. I purchased tickets for regular/open seating and requested to be added to the wait list. We attended the luau this past Thanksgiving and were very happy with how it all turned out! We arrived early (a little after 5:00pm with doors opening at 5:30pm) and there was already a long line formed. So, next set of advice is to arrive even earlier if you would like good seats. When we were let in, we were given shell lei's and plastic/disposable ponchos due to the chance of rain. Everything was set up beautifully; tables draped with cloth, fire torches, a decorative stage, the staff was dressed in Hawaiian attire, the buffet set up ready to go, etc. The buffet was really good and plentiful... Appetizers, salad, steamed rice, noodles, potato/pasta salads, taro rolls, fish and I believe three types of meat were served (I'm vegetarian so just observed). They will invite you up for seconds and thirds if you'd like -- and there's dessert so bring a big appetite! The show was awesome! Colorful, energetic and they will put on a show no matter what!! After living in Hawaii for nearly two years, I finally decided it was time to try out a Luau. This one is colocated at the Sheraton Kaua'i resort where we stayed, so it was convenient and overall enjoyable. The Luau wasn't sold out the night we went, and noticing our stroller in tow, the hosts sat us at the end of a table and blocked out the seats next to us so we would have plenty of space for the baby. This was a nice and very observant touch. Next, the open bar, featuring mai tais and blue Hawaiians, red and white wine selections, and Primo-brand Hawaiian beer. I had each of the cocktails, and found them very underwhelming, especially the blue Hawaiian, and stuck with Primo for most of the night. The bartender was fast and efficient, despite there being only one bar serving the whole Luau. I was impressed that I never had to stand in line. One might guess that the attraction of a luau is the show, but for me it was the food. I didn't have a single bad thing to eat! I particularly enjoyed the steak, but everything, including the starters and desserts, was very good! As for the show, I enjoyed it, perhaps learned a thing or two, but it got a bit tired near the end. I appreciated the round-up of cultures from across the Polynesian Islands, but everything dropped off at the Hawaiian portion, which explored Hollywood's impact, and felt (accurately) manufactured, killing the energy of the show. Of course the Luau culminates in fire dancing, which is amusing. Overall it was a worthy show but difficult to take seriously when the actors/dancers repeat for each island representation. Still, considering the delicious food, reliably endless drinks, and the number of people involved in the production I think the three-figure price tag is pretty reasonable, and a worthwhile experience. read more

Fabulous Dinner & Luau!! I've been to a few luaus during my 47 years on this earth. I am in Kauai with my husband and three teenage girls as well as my mother. We wanted to find something to do that my mom could enjoy, since kayaking and riding ATVs in the mud isn't her thing. In my experience, luau food is terrible--seriously--who actually likes Poi?? And purple rolls?? I don't eat pork, so I really can never find anything yummy at a luau. All the luaus I considered had both good and bad reviews. However, the luau at the Sheraton looked the best, so we booked it (with premier seating). On the day of the luau it poured rain--and I mean POURED!!!! We got an email update around noon indicating that he luau was moved indoors due to the weather. No big deal, I thought. I can eat crappy food indoors, too. Then the rain stopped, and by 4pm we got an email that said the luau was moved back outdoors. The location is AMAZING. We were next to the beach, and we got to enjoy cocktails (open bar) while watching the sun set. Truly extraordinary. Then it was time for dinner. The food was surprisingly good! Even the purple rolls were tasty. There was nothing they could do to make the poi taste good though. Then came the entertainment. Seriously--the dancers and fire guys were fabulous! It wasn't too long or too short. We all really enjoyed it. Lots of costumes and smiles. Every seat in the house was good--but premier seats get to be closer to the stage so I think the price difference is worth it. The setting was very lack luster, very bare of decorations and extra greenery for atmosphere, bare tables, black table cloths, and the show time was short. After 6:00 dinner, with some dancers in the background and music playing, and there was a half hour "intermission", and then the show ended at 8:09. We won't do this luau again if we return to Kauai. I've been to a few luaus since I moved to Oahu, so I was excited to see one on another island. This one came highly recommended as the only beachfront luau on the island. The Auli'l luau has two separate packages to choose from: a regular one and a deluxe one. I didn't notice much of a difference beside the leis they give out and seating maybe. This luau is definitely a show, as opposed to others I've been to that have some other activities. This one has multiple hula shows from various Polynesian islands. I loved them! The food here is pretty good too. I loved the taro bread rolls, but I was a little disappointed that they brought out the pork already shredded. They just described the process of cooking it then brought it out. I would definitely recommend this luau if you're into hula. read more

It was the first Luau I had ever been to. My Mother went to one years ago 1987 on the main island but she didn't remember if it was better, more exciting or? So I will just say I was a little disappointed. We chose this Luau as it was the only one on the island that was beachfront. The line was long to get to your seat and the you only got a lai if you paid the higher price for premier seating. It appeared the only difference was that you go a lai and they serviced you water and you sat at a round table closer to the stage. So my biggest disappointment was that we weren't all treated the same. When you go to a Luau you think you will all be sitting like one big happy family and they dancers will be attentive to all. NOT! They paid way more attention to the Premier group than us general/standard seating. Also you weren't facing the beach and that was the whole reason I went to this one as it was on the Beach but it didn't really feel like it was. Food was good and drinks were delicious! While the price is not cheap, it is not that far off from eating out at a nice restaurant with a few drinks. The setting on the beach made for such an authentic, Hawaiian feel. AMAZING! Aulil is the only Luau done on the beach on the island of Kauai. A real Luau! Stories about the Hawaiian islands and people were told beautifully. All you can eat and drink. The food was superb! We got the premiere tickets at hawaiidiscount.com. Arrive early because even if you do have premiere seating it is still first come first seated. We arrived 30 minutes before hand, 2nd in line. We received our lei's and drinks while waiting. We were also the first to go down the buffet line. While waiting for the show to start they had drummers and other musicians. Photos are allowed and at the end you will get to take photos with the dancers. I don't really know what people are complaining about on here. This is a really luau that does story telling through dancing and singing and at the end at a fire torch performer. I would also have to say this is the most reasonably priced luau. Why pay the same price for a luau that is indoors? As far as people saying it was on a sloped hill...there is no hill. Yes there are people who watch from a distance on the beach, but who wants to stand to watch a show also they didn't watch for long or else they would have to sit on the grass. Note that since you are near the ocean bring a light sweater/cardigan. read more

This was our first luau and we were not disappointed! Here's what you can expect... Parking at the event was super easy. Look for the special event sign, but they said valet parking was free. We did special event and figured we could leave faster. When you register online you get the choice of "premium" or "standard" seating. My advice is if you have a large group of more that 4 you do "premium". They get to sit at round tables in the very front of the stage. Which are reserved, so no worries if you arrive closer to 5:30pm check-in. "Standard" is seated at long rectangular tables and it's first come first serve. We got "standard" tickets and I highly suggest you arrive early and stake your place in line. There are two lines and like I said seating for "standard" is first come first serve. We were there at 5pm and we're still not the first people! There were several people serving cocktails to adults and juice to children while you waited in line. It was a nice touch! The line moves quickly so it isn't too bad and we got close seats to the stage. Once inside head to the bar and get your cocktail so you can at least enjoy it while everyone gets seated. The food was good, was it a 5 star Michelin meal? No. Did they have food for my vegetarian husband? Yes! It's comfort food and everyone at our table agreed that it was filling and had good flavors. Yes, they call you table by table but it goes pretty quick considering they have 4 buffet lines going. Same with dessert, lots of good food and moved pretty quickly. There were 2 mixed drinks available and the bartender never stopped getting them out. No lack of Mai Tai or Blue Hawaiian's at this event! They also had pog and orange juice for the kids. Water, tea and coffee were also available. The entertainment was excellent! There were stories and dancing that had meaning. The MC was hilarious, he kept the party going. The dancers were beautiful and the fire show at the end was a nice touch. They keep you mesmerized and happy, everyone was smiling. It's located right on the Sheraton Kauai's oceanfront property, so the view is absolutely amazing. This luau was one of the highlights of our trip! The food was wonderful and abundant. The entertainers were so talented and fun to watch. Our host was engaging and funny. The drinks were pretty weak and definitely NOT worth factoring in to the price tag, but the pork more than made up for it. I loved that it was right at the water and that the sunset was our stunning backdrop! I highly recommend getting to the line early to be sure to snag an up close seat. Had to do it - yes, at least one super-touristy activity while on the island. I'm a "smoke my whole pig in my own backyard kinda gal" so wasn't overly bummed that this particular luau was sans bringing the pig out of the pit ceremony. It's a smaller luau, facing the beach, on a hotel property, so take it for what it is. Pupus were purple (sweet) potatoes, crudite, smoked beef, potato chips and dip. Main meal consisted of a buffet line of food including mixed green salad, macaroni salad, lomi lomi, kimchee tofu, poke, steamed rice, a couple of noodle dishes and a whole lotta animal/fish proteins in chafing dishes. Its buffet food, so not stellar, but better than the Old Country Buffet. I recommend the pork and beef, but would skip the fish dishes as they were quite bland. Smaller luau means you can see the stage (with the palm tree, ocean backdrop) no matter where you're seated. $99/pp price (I found a 15% off discount searching online) includes the buffet and open bar. The Blue Hawaii and Mai Tai drinks are weak, but they also have a couple of beers, white wine, red wine and a nice selection of coffee and juice. While I had moments of discomfort (do you ever have those neo-colonialism, white folks moments?!?!), I was also in awe of the performers. read more

My husband and I attended the Aulii Luau with our 3 month old baby and really loved it! I actually grew up in Hawaii but thought it would be fun to go to a Luau during our vacation. I chose this Luau after a lot of research because its the only luau in Kauai thats actually on the beach. We paid the additional fee for the premiere seating and I would recommend that option to anyone who isn't fond of lines. We got right in via the premiere seating line, were greeted with beautiful flower leis and had our picture taken with hula dancers on the beach. The food was delicious!! (I went back for seconds) and they left it out so that you could go back for more. As someone who used to live here I was really pleased with the assortment of local favorites and the quality of the food. Open bar and the servers kept the drinks coming. The show itself was of great quality and very authentic. The host was a hoot and really involved the audience. Unfortunately we had to leave a little early because our baby started losing it. I wish we could go back and do it all again. Everyone was super friendly, the food and drinks were great and what we saw of the show was fantastic!! read more

What a fantastic luau experience! While many of the reviews comment on the show being touristy and the food being mediocre, we went in open minded and had a great time. The food was delicious and there was a great mix of silly luau traditions and high quality entertainment. It wasn't perfect - rain forced us to move inside, you don't get to see the pig unburied, and the fire blade dancer dropped his stick once or twice - but none of those things mattered. The band was fantastic, the dancers were talented, energitic, and excited to be there, the food was flavorful and plentiful, and the fire dancing was crazy cool. Some things to note: - Prices were ~$105 for general admission and ~$130 for preferred seating (preferred gets a seat right by the stage and goes to the food lines first) - Definitely spend the extra $25 to get preferred seating! We were right next to the stage and had the best view in the house. - Unlike some shows, you are able to take as many pictures and videos as you'd like. - The pork and steak are delicious! - Open bar was great, you have a limited selection of drinks, but they'll bring you as many as you'd like. How does this have an average of a 4 star review? Apparently a lot of people that have never been to a luau before. This was our 3rd or 4th. Had a friend that had never seen one before so after reviewing the options I chose this one at the Sheraton. Positives: The location - ocean front at the Sheraton. The hostess - very personable and always smiling. The dancers - overall good dancing and the fire dancer was fantastic. Negatives: Food - very average - but it's a buffet. I don't expect great but this was fairly blah. Cheese factor - though the dancers were good - whoever is in charge of the outfits and the dances needs to find a new career. Most of the outfits looked like stuff you could buy at Party City for your backyard luau party at home. Fake - and multi colored - grass skirts, fake plastic lei's, etc. just awful. So sad given that the participants were pretty good. The band - again very cheesy. Would rather have just the traditional drums and the music/song that the dancers make. Price - $100 for 18 and over? $25 more if you want "preferred seating"? Awful. If you are looking for a traditional luau telling the stories of Polynesia through dance and song - look elsewhere! After being to other Luaus in the island, we had high hopes for this one. But we were left very disappointed. First of all, we already had a feeling it would be a bad experience when it took them so long to get the registration moving. I mean why the heck would you have one person checking in the list of names for over a hundred guests?! Meanwhile the mosquitos and other bugs were having their own feast on the customers! Second, we didn't get a change to have a group luau photo and their reason was there was no longer "enough lighting" since the sun set early. Hello it's 2018, how hard is it for Sheraton to invest on some sufficient lighting so that all their guests would have a chance to take some souvenir photos on this event? Third, I understand that no one has any control over the weather. But common on now, every event planner knows that there should always be an alternative/back up venue when Mother Nature doesn't cooperate. How do they seriously expect their guests to enjoy the dinner, drinks and entertainment under the pouring rain? People started to leave even after being there for only an hour due to the rain. Lastly, the food was not worth staying for. For such a fancy hotel, they sure had a very basic menu. It only had about 3-4 actual "Hawaiian" dishes and to make things worse, for a tropical island, they only had pineapple to serve as fruit. I was, at very least expecting a variety of fresh fruits. Seriously 1 fruit, wtf?! Needless to say, after getting drenched for an hour and a half, enough was enough! We left soon after the desserts were served. Probably the only consolation were their attractive and great dancers. But that was about it... So do yourselves a big favor and do not bother wasting your time and money on this watered-down luau(literally). There are so many other options in the island. read more

The evening was rainy and VERY windy (surprised they didn't move it under cover) The emcee, Moy (sp?) was very entertaining and jovial- WHEN you could hear him over the musicians. The mix of the musicians singing and Moy's talking was just noise. The dancers/artists were fine but we felt they didn't have much experience and were fairly new to this (compared to other luaus on the island- we've seen all of them). We have been to this Luau THREE times! We've been to the indoor venue(due to rain) as well as on the beach twice! We stay at the Sheraton when we visit Kauai so it's an easy choice for an activity. They put on an awesome show! The dancers are amazing and the live music is wonderful! Although it's obviously not as fun to be in the Sheraton ballroom as it is to be on the beach they do go above and beyond to make sure everyone is having an amazing time! I noticed some of the reviews highlight the time they had to wait in line for food or drinks, in all three of our experiences I never found that to be true. They excuse the tables one by one so there is never a huge line for the buffet! There is some food that I and my husband found excellent! The Kalua pork is very yummy and my favorite is the beef they serve. My toddler devoured all my chicken so I can't say more about that. The Haupia is my favorite and I learned to make it at home so I didn't have to wait for vacation! I also found the drinks to be very yummy! I'm not a huge Mai Tai fan but my husband had no complaints about his, I enjoyed the Blue Hawaiian and my son loved the POG! The one thing I will say, is that Thursday Nights Cousin Moi is the MC and he puts on a SHOW! The Monday night MC is still good, but does a bit more of a "buttoned up" show. Cousin Moi got far more into the night, and as my husband put it, "You can just feel how much he embraces his culture, and how excited he is to share that with the guests." read more

This luau was good fun. I have been to other luaus and was not going to bother with this one, but my husband had never been to one and wanted to try it. I was nervous that the buffet would not have anything for me to eat as in the past it has been very meat-centric. I was so wrong! This buffet was delicious. The pupus included purple potatoes, potato chips, fresh veggies and dip, and couple meat things. The main buffet had so much variety. Good green salad, macaroni salad, cooked vegetables, vegetable fried rice, miso tofu, poke, pork, beef, chicken, fish, poi, and more. It was all so tasty and wonderful. Then the desserts! Pineapple upside down cake, coconut cake, brownies, coconut cream gels, fresh pineapple, rice pudding, etc. And an open bar all night long. The food and buffet was fantastic. It wins. The dancing and show were good. Not the best I'd ever seen, though the cast of performers had very impressive credentials. It was certainly enjoyable, and the host was wonderful. My husband enjoyed it very much. Plus who doesn't love a show on the beach? It's a great experience if you've never done a luau before, and even if you have it is one heck of a meal. read more

On the day our luau was scheduled it was cloudy and raining and our luau got moved indoors to the Sheraton Kaua'i Resort. We came from Lihue so the traffic to get to the luau from there took us a little over an hour instead of 30 min because of rush hour, I'm assuming. The food was very good and we got to eat right away and the alcoholic beverages were pre-made so you could just grab one and go back to your seat. There was a very pretty area to the side next to where they served food to take a picture for memories. The staff was friendly and guided people in a fast fashion to get their food and drinks. The host of the luau was funny and kept the vibe young and fresh while still telling the history of the island. With all that said, I'm not a fan of it being indoors. I have been to two other luaus and I feel like it being indoors took away from not only the sunset vibe but also "Hawaii luau" experience. With all the noise that happens during a luau (the performers and the audience) the small area was too loud for me personally to be able to enjoy the entertainment. The luau itself felt longer as well because you're in an enclosed space but I understand that it was also due to the unpredictable rain and clouds. It's hard to keep people in touch with the luau when there are so many different conversations going while the performers are doing their thing. We sat towards back and the people sitting in front of us kept leaning forward and backwards, so we were constantly moving back and forth just to get a view.
