I can't believe I've yet to review one of my absolute most favorite places! Any who, the Austrian Village (or the AV to us regulars, lol) is a warm and welcoming place where you immediately feel as though you've entered a bygone era of simpler times, when the world was more innocent. The place isn't fancy, but the friendly greetings and accommodations you receive upon entering more than enough make up for it's lack of "swank". To be honest, this place just wouldn't work if it went the trendy route. The AV's modest and humble decor is just perfect as is! The food brings you back to Sunday dinners at your grandmoms house. Filling, traditional, simple and just delicious! I always go for the stuffed weinerschnitzel and homemade German potato salad...I've yet to be disappointed. Topped off with a cold glass of crisp Riesling and I am one happy mama! Speaking of being a mother, this place is awesome on Saturday evenings for a fun (early) night out with my family. They always have entertainment on Saturdays, whether it be a traditional German band, a Polka band, or even a one man band playing his accordian. My kids, aged 5 & 3 absolutely LOVE coming here. The last time we came, they actually had a staff member dress up as a chicken and do the chicken dance with all the kiddies. It felt like we were at a wedding reception in an old German village. So much fun! Lastly, I have to say that the average price for an entree is roughly 12-14 bucks and that includes two sides. They have a kiddie (kinder) menu too, which is super cheap. I've never left there hungry and we usually have some of our food to take home and munch on later. All in all I gotta say, this place is the best! As a young lad in the 80s I worked at a German travel agency that was on Rising Sun Ave., practically walking distance. Although there was another on Five Points corner I think called the Hofbrau House that was also very good and closer, this was always my favorite German spot. This was more down-home authentic. Hasn't changed much other than being kept up in classic fashion, and the food is just as good as I remember. If you'd like a nostalgic trip back some 35 years and want to feel you've crossed the pond, go here. The schnitzel is always pleasing as are the typical ethnic offerings, inclusive beer selections as you might expect, on weekends there was oom-pah entertainment, and what good Polish boy could resist bacon-wrapped pierogi? Stopped in for lunch after an appointment at Fox Chase and the food and service was very good. Grouper sandwich with chips was fresh and the Schnitzel sandwich was a nice size portion that came with a bag of chips. Not sure how these people serve the food they do at the prices, because we would of had trouble eating at a fast food place for the price of our lunch. read more

I don't love the place. I like it. That said, its that I usually get a Knockwurst, Red Cabbage and spaetzle platter and its not very large at all. I need more food! The quality is OK. Was very much looking forward to trying Austrian Village for some good German food. A relative & I arrived on a Saturday around 4:30pm to a relatively empty restaurant. Entering into the bar area from the doors, we had to search to find the person who seats you because there is no greeters area when you walk in & she was busy discussing tee shirts with someone on the other end of the bar area. Placed a simple order for sauerbraten with spaetzle & red cabbage. My cousin ordered rouladen with spaetzle & red cabbage. We also got a side of the potato salad to sample. The food arrived fairly quickly (after a basket of white rolls & rye bread were put on the table - no pumpernickel in a German restaurant??) & it was hot. I am not a chef, nor am I a food snob. I have attempted to make sauerbraten at home before because it is a favorite. This was NOT sauerbraten. The sauce was more of a dark brown, congealed gravy that covered what looked to be graying meat. Authentic sauerbraten has a reddish-brown gravy (not gloppy) & is made with ginger snaps. No ginger here! The sauce was also over the spaetzle which was a bit dry on the ends. The red cabbage (& yes I do make a variation of this quite frequently) was hot but had an odd taste that I couldn't quite figure out. The potato salad was ok; again an oddly overpowering spice of some sort that didn't thrill me. My cousin's rouladen was the proper "look" for rouladen. However, it was tough (we tried each others meals) as boot leather. The bacon inside wasn't cooked enough & the inside of the meat from the rouladen was on the pink side (undercooked?). She was also unimpressed with the spaetzle & red cabbage She thought the potato salad was ok. We couldn't figure why so many people were coming in to the restaurant with food that was cooked so poorly. There was a party in the back of the main room so maybe we got leftovers from what they were served. I just don't know. I do know that I will not be going back. The only reason I gave the place 1 star is because I had to in order to submit the review. Otherwise, they would get 0. read more

This place used to be a great German spot, but things have changed. We were just there to celebrate my Grandmother's birthday. Unfortunately, we NEVER got our food after sitting for two hours. What annoyed us even more was that neither our server nor the manager could tell us when we would get our food. We just kept hearing that they were super busy, but yet other tables were being served. Three people from our party sat at a separate table because the manager told us that we arrived too early for our reservation and they didn't have our table ready (we arrived on time, not too early). Those three people received their food in a timely fashion but received stuffed schnitzel that was dry and flavorless. P.s. they also charge $1.75 for refills!! There is no excuse for bad service. If you cannot handle a large party, don't take the reservation. We ended ordering Vincent's and enjoyed the rest of our night. read more

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed when I had dinner at the Austrian Village tonight. I went to this restaurant years ago with my aunt and grammom and I didn't remember liking it much, but I saw the yelp reviews and figured I would give the place another go! I came in with my friends on a Saturday when we were all craving some German food and beer. We were seated right away, which was nice, but our waitress could have had a bit more of a friendly demeanor. For example, when she came to our table for the first time, instead of saying hello or giving some kind of welcome, she abruptly asked to have the mustard that was on the table and then walked away. She wasn't really rude per se, but definitely not sending any "warm and fuzzy" vibes for the sake of customer service. We ordered the Bavarian Pretzel and the Cheese Spaetzle to start as appetizers. The pretzel was very salty and the flavor of the beer cheese dip was a bit flat. The spaetzle did not really have great flavor. For the entree, I ordered the chicken filet cutlet with applesauce and the German potato salad. The chicken filet didn't have much flavor and I had to utilize the applesauce and potato salad to give it a little "oomph". The potato salad I would say was the best part of the meal. I had two good beers, but I was hoping for a larger selection on tap. I don't think we will be back anytime soon. read more

My family has been eating at the Austrian Village since I was a little kid. We've always loved authentic German food, and there is plenty of it in this particular neighborhood. But for authentic, no frills, laid-back German dining, the Austrian Village is really where it is at. Recently I returned for the first time in several years when my family had a large gathering here. I swear, the place hasn't changed at all since I was kid. The decor is the same, some of the waitresses are the same, and most importantly, the food is the same. I tell you -- I would travel a really long way for the German potato salad here. Amazing. Also highly recommend the schnitzel and the sausages. But you really can't go wrong. Service is fast and good. Prices are incredibly reasonable. On this latest visit, they also accommodated our large group with ease, despite the fact that they were contending with our group, a second large group and their normal lunchtime rush. This place has a great local community feel, but it is so welcoming, you never feel like an outsider! The menu is great in its simplicity-great German food. And even if you think "I won't find something I like", you will be proven wrong. It's especially great when they have live music, especially a German band. We recently moved to the area, tried Hop Angel down the street which was good and wanted to try another similar place, so we tried Austrian Village. The bread for the table was stale and likely recycled. We had the soft pretzel which was warm and nice. The fried pickles were okay, but a little soggy. The mushroom schnitzel was bland and my wife ate maybe a third before giving up. The sauerkraut was very different than expected, not in a good way. The sea bass special was unseasoned and after taking several bites, it was noticed under the skin was a red/purple covering half the filet. I don't know if it was the bloodline or poor food safety, but that was it for me. After having our plates taken away, we waited 20 minutes for the check. I'm typing this review with my stomach cramping. Unfortunately, we will not be back. On a side note, we noticed a sign out front stating they were seeking cooks. read more

My wife and I excitedly entered Austrian Village anticipating a wonderful German-style dinner. We had both decided against a wurst because we had just left Reiker's with a cooler full of the the best in the area. Instead we wished to try the homestyle cooking and old-world recipes. Well, if this was homestyle I'd have moved out at the earliest opportunity! Old-world recipes? Perhaps the kitchen spices were all out of stock.....My Hungarian goulash was the most bland goulash imaginable. It really should have been no surprise when I asked if I could get something to spice it up I was first offered hot sauce! I mean really! Has no one here had excellent goulash to try to model after? I then tried my wife's mushroom schnitzel. It was unbelievably tasteless. Probably more decently used to play frisbee golf than to serve to the unsuspecting public cloaked as German food! Thank God the salt and pepper shakers were full! The gravy at least made things swallowable....but added nothing else. We have never eaten at a German truckstop, but perhaps this would be comparable.....No, hold on, I got it!....German Hospital Food! Interestingly the spaetzle, sauerkraut, red cabbage and potato salad sides were all very good. They didn't seem to come from the same kitchen at all. Go figure! Perhaps staying with a wurst platter would be the way to go here. But to call our entrees authentic German food is so unfair to the uninitiated, this was like watching black and white tv after being used to a high defintion plasma. However, the prices are inexpensive and German draught is always a winner, so if the brats are good this place could have a place in the rotation...as a place for an afternoon sandwich and a beer...just don't challenge the cook and expect much. Service was homey and friendly, but again...This is just eating, not dining. If you crave excellent German food, go to Rieker's for provisions and go home and cook. read more

We made our last visit here Friday night at 8:15. The place was not crowded, which should have been a warning. The girl that seated us couldn't have been unfriendlier if she tried. She didn't greet us, crack a smile or otherwise make us feel welcome. We were dumped at a completely empty table; no cloth, silverware, condiments or napkins. And then we sat. And sat. And sat. A waitress tended to the table right next to us and never even looked in our direction. Another waitress was in view standing doing absolutely nothing. A third waitress was too worried about counting her money from the table that just left. After exactly 10 minutes we left. Having been coming here 20 years it hurts us to cross this one off the list but 5 minutes later we were seated at the Hop Angle down the street and had a good meal with great service. read more

This was our first visit to Austrian Village and we will certainly return. The food is fabulous and the prices more than reasonable. Authentic German food with a nice selection of German beer. I have traveled to Germany and Austria three times and if I had been blindfolded would have easily thought I was sitting in Munich or Salzburg from the taste of the food. The German potato salad was outstanding and the sauerkraut was unique and delicious. Entrees were nicely portioned and very pleasing. The staff was very friendly and made you feel welcome. We went to Steven Starr's so-called German Restaurant last year and were totally disappointed. The potato salad and bratwurst can't hold a candle to the Austrian Village's fare. The atmosphere was great though and when we recently went to the Austrian Village for lunch we were saddened to see the murals on the walls painted over. They helped with the authenticity of the restaurant and were so beautiful. I couldn't understand why this was done. The waitress told me someone had written that they thought the restaurant was dark. I couldn't disagree more. The murals only added to the charm of the place. read more
