"Authentic" is one of those words that gets thrown around in reviews of ethnic restaurants without…read moremuch thought behind it. People use it to mean tasty, or familiar, or just different from a chain. That's not what I mean when I use it. To me, authentic means the food isn't pretending to be something it's not, that the flavors and intention come from a real place: heritage, roots, memory. My benchmark is simple. When someone who grew up eating this food says it tastes like home, that's the review that matters. That's the one I trust. Keeva earns that word. Rita is the heart of it, but Keeva is a family labor of love and you feel that from the moment you walk in. When the restaurant first opened she told us about the dream they had to bring the taste of home to the people of San Francisco, and you could feel it. Her kids were often playing in the restaurant when we'd stop by. That kind of detail tells you everything about what this place is. What made me a regular wasn't just the food, which is delicious, it was Rita coming to every table, checking in, teasing us about why she hadn't seen us in a while, steering you toward something you hadn't tried yet. She didn't do this selectively for certain customers. She did it for everyone. That kind of warmth is rare, and it's the whole reason eating out is worth doing in the first place. The dishes are made with intention. You can taste the difference between food that was assembled and food that was cooked with purpose. Keeva is the latter. And if you ask for spicy, prepare yourself. I used to live about a block away and this was my go-to. Moving out of the Inner Richmond meant leaving Keeva behind, and I genuinely miss it. If you're in the neighborhood, what are you waiting for? If you're not, it's worth the trip!

The paneer butter masala was finger-licking delicious, and the naans were fresh and soft--they didn't even get chewy when cold. The chaats are a delight, especially the onion kachori chaat. The absolute highlight, however, was the dessert that shares the restaurant's name: Jalebi. Fried in ghee with real saffron and made fresh to order, it is the most delicious jalebi I've tasted in the whole of the USA. The hosts are a lovely couple running a family-owned business, and they truly have a calling for hospitality. When we visited right around closing time, they were still running around for hungry customers. Even when they had to turn a group away at the door, the wife immediately offered to pack food to go, bringing smiles to everyone's faces. She always finds a way to serve her customers. We really enjoyed our meal and hope to return soon!

For food we got the following: -Dahi Sev Puri - this was my favorite dish, really fun to eat and great flavors. -Chole Bhature - this was also great! The puffy bread was sooo delicious and the chickpeas were perfectly seasoned and delicious. -Bhel Puri - this dish was unique and was a good size portion, but not as flavorful as the other two dishes. It felt like eating a savory rice crispy cereal, but not in a bad way :P -Garlic Naan - pretty decent but nothing special -Jalebi - I was really excited to try this dessert. I looooved the texture (crunchy outside, with a gooey inside) but the actual flavor was not my favorite. To me, it tasted very similar to chlorinated water, and it was hard to get past that.. There was a different jalebi with a dipping sauce, and I wonder if that would have been better. They were out of it when we went, but I would try it again with that. Overall a really great restaurant, and definitely a place to try out if you're wanting a more unique Indian dining experience!

Each dish was visually stunning and carefully prepared. We tried many smaller dishes, tapas style. Some of the standouts were tandoori avocado with dosa crisp, baingan bharta cornetto, shiso chaat, passionfruit pani puri, pyaaz kachori, carrot halwa pave. Chef Pujan, longtime chef of Rooh, has outdone himself here. We truly felt it's the most exciting high-end Indian restaurant in Bay Area ( and we've tried them all).

The person who states "This is most likely the best restaurant in the world" has to be beyond sheltered; It's not even the best restaurant in the _neighborhood_. The main thing you must understand: the food is "inspired" by Indian food, but it does _not_ taste like Indian food. I suspect its been intentionally watered down to be palatable to milquetoast palettes. We ordered three small plates and the butter chicken as the main. Chicken Tikka Taco. This was greasy to the touch, with chicken and cheese. The dominate flavor is the cheddar cheese. They were trying to be creative but the ultimate effect was similar to a frozen burrito with cheddar cheese and chile verde. If you eat this, close your eyes and imagine a microwaved, frozen burrito..you'll see what I mean. Tandoori Avocado. This features an avocado that's been warmed and covered in a chili sauce. There's a green hummus and a fried dosa crisp. While it sounds wild, once the flavors are mixed together on the plate...the overall effect is that of a green-goddess salad. It's not bad, but its not mind bending. Octopus Xec Xec. The octopous was was cooked nicely and there was a tomato based sauce. Unlike something you'd find in India, it is _not_ heavy on the spices, or tang, or nuttiness. It's just very _neutral_. Butter Chicken. This was the biggest disappointment. I've never had a butter chicken curry that tasted so close to tomato soup in my life. I've eaten tons of butter chicken in my life, hundreds of Indian restaurants. I cannot imagine this was not an intentional choice...It was extremely disappointing. Also, the choice to use chicken breast was poor. Inevitably you get overcooked, chewy chicken pieces. They must have chosen this because (like Disneyland) sometimes you water things down to make it more popular with less adventurous people. The customers next to us (not Indian) kept slathering it on their rice and saying "I can't believe I didn't use to like Indian food!" -- that told me all I needed to know. BTW the naan is insanely bad. They stretched it very thin and then crisped it to the point that it breaks like a cracker. In what world is naan not pillowy and soft? Personally, I was really disappointed with this experience -- the other reviews on yelp are absolute insanity IMO. I know there's a hype train right now -- but someday people will realize this place is not it.

We' ve tried Udupi Palace, Tilak,Aslam's Rasoli, Masala Dosa, Star India, and Castro Indian Restaurant. Luckily last week, our UCSF dentist recommended her go-to, the Marina Indian Cuisine. We were hoping for a low-key, laid-back Indian restaurant. I arrived first around five o'clock with my husband joining me a half an hour later. The restaurant was between shifts and seemed quiet with the owner and waitress chatting at the bar. Once my husband arrived we ordered from the young, kind Indian waitress. Our dinner began with the vegetable pakora appetizer. It was freshly fried and accompanied by three sauces creating a different taste experience depending on the chosen sauce. Our main entree was the lamb rogan josh at a medium curry level. The slow cooked lamb had a vibrant red yogurt based thick gravy making the cumin basmati rice, and Himalayan ice tea a great match. I consider our meal filling with nothing to carry home. All this delicious Indian/Nepal inspired dinner for only $40.19. Hard to beat in San Francisco.

Worst Service Ever - Ruined a Birthday Dinner We visited…read moreCopra for my birthday based on a relative's recommendation. While the food itself was decent, the abysmal service completely ruined our evening. The Food: 4/5 The menu is designed for sharing. We ordered 5 dishes in total; 3 were genuinely good and 2 were just okay. The Service: 0/5 The experience was terrible from the start. When I asked our waiter for a cocktail recommendation, he dismissively replied, "It's whatever you like," offering zero actual suggestions. Because we had a late lunch, our party of three started by ordering 3 dishes. The waiter immediately seemed annoyed by this. I explained that we wanted to gauge the portion sizes first and would order more as we went. As we realized the plates were quite small, we ordered a fourth item, and later, a fifth. At that point, the waiter actually lectured us, claiming the kitchen doesn't like orders placed at different times and that everything must be ordered upfront. For a shared-plate menu, this made absolutely no sense. After that, his attitude grew worse, and he began aggressively tossing dishes onto our table. When an older gentleman (who seemed to be checking on tables) stopped by, I asked him if this "all at once" ordering rule was real. Shockingly, our waiter stood right next to us, intentionally eavesdropping on the conversation. To top it all off, after I left an 18% tip (which he absolutely did not deserve), he snatched the payment reader right out of my hand. Overall: We have never experienced such rude, hostile service in our lives. We will absolutely never return to Copra.

We decided to dine here anyway although the restaurant was empty. The dinner menu had a wide range of curries and appetizers and options for vegetarian and meat based dishes. I liked the variety of dishes available. Pricing seemed fair. Since it was our first time dining here, we opted to order a thali and split that. There's three thali options that include different entrees and have different costs. We went with the 'rani' option which has more curries. The appetizer includes one potato samosa and some veggie pakoras (fried fritters) with chutney sauce on the side. The samosa was okay, the potatoes were a bit bland, but we liked the pakoras and the green chutney was a nice dipping sauce. Now for the thali, the portions looked a bit smaller than expected but it was enough food for us. The rice wasn't too great, but we liked the mixed veggie curry and the lamb curry, which had a nice, flavorful and earthy curry sauce. The onion kulcha paired well with all 3 of the curries. Unfortunately, the chicken tikka masala was a bit too salty and lacked enough chicken pieces, so it was less balanced. I was hoping it would be better and tasty, but we didn't enjoy it sadly. The thali also included a choice of dessert (either kheer or rice pudding or gulub jamun which is like sweet syrupy dessert balls). I was curious about the gulub jamun and it was fine, but didn't really leave an impression. Customer service was friendly and efficient, we saw a few folks pick up delivery orders but it was quiet and empty up until we finished our meal and another couple walked in to dine in. Parking in the area can be limited, so be prepared to circle around a few times and walk a block or two. We're still curious about the lunch/dinner buffet options and will plan to return to try that out in the future.
