"Authentic" is one of those words that gets thrown around in reviews of ethnic restaurants without much thought behind it. People use it to mean tasty, or familiar, or just different from a chain. That's not what I mean when I use it. To me, authentic means the food isn't pretending to be something it's not, that the flavors and intention come from a real place: heritage, roots, memory. My benchmark is simple. When someone who grew up eating this food says it tastes like home, that's the review that matters. That's the one I trust. Keeva earns that word. Rita is the heart of it, but Keeva is a family labor of love and you feel that from the moment you walk in. When the restaurant first opened she told us about the dream they had to bring the taste of home to the people of San Francisco, and you could feel it. Her kids were often playing in the restaurant when we'd stop by. That kind of detail tells you everything about what this place is. What made me a regular wasn't just the food, which is delicious, it was Rita coming to every table, checking in, teasing us about why she hadn't seen us in a while, steering you toward something you hadn't tried yet. She didn't do this selectively for certain customers. She did it for everyone. That kind of warmth is rare, and it's the whole reason eating out is worth doing in the first place. The dishes are made with intention. You can taste the difference between food that was assembled and food that was cooked with purpose. Keeva is the latter. And if you ask for spicy, prepare yourself. I used to live about a block away and this was my go-to. Moving out of the Inner Richmond meant leaving Keeva behind, and I genuinely miss it. Was heavily craving Indian food and found Keeva on Yelp! We were surprised it was pretty empty because the food was soooo good. My favorite has to go to the goat curry and chicken biryani. Both were so flavorful and had a good amount of protein in them, hit everything I was craving. The palak paneer was also good, but we thought it could be improved with more pieces of paneer as well as if it was a little hotter. We also received some sort of yogurt sauce on the side, not sure which dish it was supposed to be for but it tasted good on everything we ordered haha. read more

Explosive flavors and unique combinations prevail at Keeva, located in South SF on a popular restaurant street/area. As with anywhere in SF, parking is tricky and you may need to circle around for street parking since spots in front of the restaurant are usually taken. But it's usually not more than a 5 minute walk (just be prepared to parallel park). Love the ambiance here and the food even more. Keeva serves traditional Indian cuisine - curries, naan, tandoori chicken - with some extra flair. As a non-salad person, their salad was my favorite thing and I don't think I've ever felt that way at another restaurant. Great service and the portions are huge. Their chai is also to die for. I used to eat here all the time and I guess it has changed. I ordered via DoorDash the GOAT biryani, and anyone who has had biryani knows the meat is tender and the rice ain't dry. Maybe some of the best Indian I've tried in the city. The naan is fluffy, the curries are seasoned and the staff are a delight. Our party of 3 came in for a Friday dinner and had to wait around 15 minutes for a table. We started off with the fried fish appetizer which came in a pretty generous portion. We especially loved dipping the fish into the goat curry. We were recommended to the goat curry as well as the butter chicken both to which were solid choices. The goat was tender and the sauce was full of depth and flavor. We soaked up all the saucy goodness with two orders of naan and one order of rice. Homey vibes and good food! I came here with a friend at around 5:45pm on a Sunday night. There was no wait, and we were seated immediately. We got the palak chaat, tandoori chicken, butter chicken, and garlic naan. The palak chat was amazing-it was crispy, tangy, sweet, slightly spicy, and absolutely delicious. This is a must try! The butter chicken was also nice-it was sweet and had strong tomato flavor. I normally like my butter chicken slightly less tomato-y and more buttery, but it was still tasty. We got it with medium spice and it had a good kick. The tandoor chicken was alright-it was good but not top-notch. The dish had more wings than we expected, which was a nice surprise! I also wish the garlic naan was more fluffy and flavorful. The one thing that was annoying was that there was a tiny fly that kept on hovering and bothering our food all throughout our dinner. I am not sure if this was a fluke because my experience is so different than the typical but I was left quite disappointed. Perhaps this is an issue of takeout. I will say the flavors were excellent but two of our dishes lacked some of the ingredients. The chicken biryanis had no chicken. It was one of the best flavored biryanis I've had in the city but I was disappointed there was not a single piece of chicken in our whole container! The second issue was the malai kofta curry which is described as potato cheese dumplings cooked in curry. The curry was great but there was nothing in it, no potato, no dumpling, nothing. At first I was worried I ordered a soup because there was literally nothing in it. It was again delicious and we just dipped naan in it but I was super bummed! The palak paneer did have paneer but was a little thicker than I prefer, still good. The chicken tikka was good. (This was called something else on the menu but we were told it's similar.) Paneer w peas: terrific, good spice level Breads, raita, chutneys: very good Value was good given the quality and portion sizes. It is a family owned business so the staff treat the customers like family and not like patrons. Inside you can feel the hospitality and exuding love that the team have for people. I came here for lunch. The place was empty, and we needed to wait for someone to sit us down, probably because they had opened not too long beofre. We ordered the chettinad goat curry, half tandoori chicken, masala chai, and garlic naan, all with medium spice level. It took some time to get our dishes, again likely because they had just opened. They did mention ahead of time that some items, like the chai, would take longer. After 20 minutes or so, everything except the chai came out together. * Chettinad goat curry: 5/5. It was excellent, with strong spices and very flavorful small chunks of meat. * Garlic naan: 4.5/5. It had a nice garlic flavor and was on the thinner side with crispy edges. However, I personally prefer the soft, pillowy naan. * Tandoori chicken: 4/5. It was nicely cooked and came with tamarind and mint chutney; I slightly preferred the tamarind chutney for its sweetness, which complemented the spices. It also came with a side salad that had a light, sweet mustard dressing. * Masala chai: 4.5/5. It was very traditional and tasted good, though it was kind of small for the price, and I prefer mine slightly sweeter and creamier. Tried a dish that's not in my usual rolodex (anywhere) - the lamb curry - which was definitely a bit over salted (fixed with some yogurt at home) with generous amounts of tender lamb. In the restaurant's defense, they did recommend the goat over the lamb ;) the flavor of the curry was great, it's a shame to have had it overpowered by so much salt. To the awesome team here: please consider under-salting instead. Your flavors speak for themselves. Always a generous amount of naan in the order. I ordered delivery through Uber today. Feel like craving some Indian Food! When the food came, I found out that the portion is way too small for $17.50 dish. I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala. It tastes good. But the size is just the size of the cup shown in the photo. I ordered 1 plain nan and 2 garlic nan. Both nans are okay in terms of taste. But really! The portion of the curry is way too overpriced! :( It was my first time trying this place too :(( I think if they serve slightly more curry in a bigger cup, that would match the price better!
