I've also disputed this fraudulent charge with my bank (the price I was charged does not match the advertised price) To everyone else, they've admitted that the information on their website is incorrect and it has not been updated yet. Don't go off of that information. Don't trust anything you're told over the phone! Get everything in writing! Sort these reviews by lowest rating and you'll instantly see a pattern of aggression and lying that paints a clear picture of the kind of guy that is running this place. Context: I went here for a smog check because this webpage says that vehicles that are from 2000 or newer cost $40 for a smog check - https://autoexpresssacramento.com/smog It also says that we could get another check within 30 days if we fail. They charged me $51 for my 2007 jeep and then failed me because I had a temperature reading sensor connected to the computer. The guy told me that california law dictates that modifying the computer is illegal and that's why they have to fail me. (That may be so, I haven't checked but regardless, this was a temperature sensor. It does nothing to modify the computer.) He also told me that if I wanted to get it checked again it would only be free if they did the "repairs" (by repairs they meant unplugging the temperature sensor - which I assume they would have the audacity to charge me for) I paid and left. I got a call shortly after from another man (the manager/owner?) who told me that he's sorry about the misinformation on the website and that they would have it corrected. In the meantime, because the website makes it look like they do free re-checks, he would honor that and I had 30 days to return for a free smog check. I was with my partner at the time who I immediately told about this free check - this helped me feel a little less cheated and she remembers us talking about him saying it would be free. A couple weeks later, I unplug the sensor (literally just a temperature sensor that makes no modifications to anything on the jeep) and head back in. They say that I need to pay $31 for this second check (while also trying to tell me that $31 is half off of $51). I said that when he spoke to me on the phone he said it would be free. He denied that. I set the paperwork down on the desk, said "I'll be going somewhere else then. I'll leave a review too". To which, this manager/owner responded "Make sure to include your address in the review so we can come to your house and beat you up" - "or fuck you up", something along those lines. He mumbled the end. I was shocked. I said "Did you just threaten me over a review? What's your name?" To which he responded "My name is get the hell out of here before I stick my foot up your ass". The manager/owner who threatened me is an older overweight man with a foreign accent - be prepared to be threatened if you suggest you're going to leave a negative review. EDIT: I filed a complaint with the BBB and the response from the business is in broken English (poor grammar) where the owner is pretending to be one of his employees who spoke perfect English. Five stars! This is why small shops are the best. The mechanic is great, he fixed an electrical issue I had. My installed radio stopped working, and they fixed all the cables. My car radio is working, like brand new, when it was completely dead. Also the mechanic did a great job on my oil change, and told me about work that needed to be done soon, such as my brakes. Today I had my radio mount stolen out of my car, and they were super helpful; the mechanic told me what part I needed and where to buy it, and told me he would fix it. John/Auto Express is going to be my go-to mechanic in downtown Sacramento. The check engine light came on in our old '99 Tacoma due to a cylinder misfire. He is very kind and took time to explain how engines work and what exactly was wrong, as well as routine maintenance we missed that may have even caused it (extremely old/worn spark plugs). He then gave us several different options at varying price points. He never pushed us to do the most expensive thing and even warned it wouldn't really raise the value of the truck if our goal was to sell it. He also told me about a California retired vehicle program that I didn't know about where we could get money for it when it failed smog if we didn't want to fix it. And he warned me about liability for failing smog and what to put in a contract if we sold on the private market. Overall an extremely knowledgable, honest, trustworthy mechanic. I will definitely be back. A couple of months ago when we had a stretch of triple digit temperatures the air conditioning went out in my car. I needed to find a mechanic close to me so I called them up at 3:30 in the afternoon. He said "bring it by and we will take a look at it" and they closed at 5pm. Worst experience of my life. John was rude from the start. Snapped at me, was uncooperative, continuously gave me the run around when asked SPECIFIC questions and wouldn't give me a straight answer. Very disrespectful and I felt very looked down upon and treated like a dog. Never have I ever seen mechanic act in such a disrespectful, aggressive manor. John is dishonest and fails to leave out EXTREMELY CRUCIAL DETAILS. John told me he would have to look at the car until Monday saying he would need a few more days to look at it and not telling me that they were closed Saturday and Sunday and that there would be a storage fee each day. Left out those two specific details and accused me of knowing and "signing a form" which clearly I did not, he just completely made a story up. I have never even been to the shop physically because it have been towed there. I took it there for a $60 diagnostic and I called him to tell him I was picking it up which he proceeded to tell me it was $160 or he wouldn't release my car and then it would be his and he would put a lean on it then sell it. When I arrived at the shop to pick up my car I asked him why didn't he notify me that they were closed on those two days and there would be a storage fee. John then came very angry and became argumentative and started yelling at me, Would not give me a straight answer and when I told him I felt he was being dishonest with me and that was not legal to charge me something that I was not made aware of before hand. He finally said that he would take $50 off the bill for one of the storage days. He started screaming and said that he Didn't like my attitude (aka still asking him why wasn't he upfront about being closed and the fees I was completely unaware of or even considered being told by John after 3 phone calls about the car ) therefore ... he was going to add the extra storage day fee (which he never disclosed in the first place) So basically he told me he was going to take a $50 day storage fee because he knew he was being dishonest, and I asked him why ( for the 3rd time ) he didn't notify me he told me that he didn't like my attitude and he was going to add the extra Freon again. Who does that when being asked a upfront question when doing business ? The way he handled everything was completely inappropriate and he continue to yell and then he took my debit card so I took my keys off the counter to go walk to my car and he started screaming that I was stealing the car, all while having my debit card in his possession. As I stood there with the keys in my hand and my debit have a card in his, John then proceeded to scream and call the cops and tell the cops And said I snatched the keys from him (ABSOLUTE LIE) and that I was threatening him (about what, I have no idea) because I didn't happen and then refused to give me my debit card even though I try to give them the keys back which I never snatched in the first place I took them off the counter because I was under the impression that our transaction was at its end and he was going to swipethe card. when I told him fine just charge me whatever the you were going to charge me I need to get out of here I had to go pick up my son and He started screaming he "only took cash" as he had my debit card in his hand. Another employee came up and told me that he would take the debit card and he explained all my charges and he even took off the $50 charge which John was refusing to do. I will never ever come to this place again I cannot believe the disrespect and dishonesty in my car was still exactly broken and the same way it was when I got there. The AAA driver that came to pick up the car saw the whole incident and said the guy was out of line and disrespectful and agreed 100% and said herself that John was "completely upset and completely out of control" because I was asking about his dishonesty and he simply could not handle it. Also when I looked in my car the OILY COVERS to my battery and my engine were in my FRONT SEAT like he just tossed them in the car. he didn't even have enough respect to put the car back the way it came or even the hood all the way. That's how I know he did a half a** job and just wanted to make a quick $60. MY SEATS ARE NOW STAINED. Do not do business with this place! They rip peopl off and they will MILK YOU FOR WHAT YOU HAVE AND LIE. They will try and charge you more and say they can't look any further unless you pay more for something that doesn't need to be fixed !!!!! John clearly attempted to take advantage that I was a female and he thought I didn't know what I was talking about or think I was going to stand up for myself. Went to Auto Express for a smog check (super fast and easy!). When I tried to register my out of state car, the DMV told me there was an issue with the smog check. While the issue was ultimately the DMV's fault and NOT Auto Express's fault (DMV employee was typing "1" instead of "i"), John went out of his way to call me and walk through all of the information he submitted with my smog check (which was all correct, of course).
