I've updated this review based on further happenings. Recognizing that the order was taking too long (more than double the quoted timeline) the manager of the store really rose to the occasion. He drove out to the distribution center, picked up my order, and delivered it to my door. Mark deserves a five star review for his service and attention! Outstanding service aside in this instance, the fact remains that my order was extremely delayed, so I do still have some reservations about the store. While everyone there is very nice and attentive, I believe that they are spread a bit thin and that with their many different vendors, they find it hard to really keep good track of delivery times and the offerings and capabilities of each vendor. So I do stick by my original assessment that this is a great resource if you have plenty of time and know exactly what you need, but I would not suggest them if you need to adhere to a specific timeline or if you're looking for really in-depth advice about tile. read more

My contractor order tile from this place for my backsplash for a new kitchen. The end of March!! They kept pushing back the delivery date! We had to cancel and go with someone else. If the tile wasn't in that's one thing but to say it'll be in then go back on your word that's. whole other issue. Avalon did this three different times. It's not the staff, but the managers and higher ups. Not good to lie to your contractors/customers. Too bad you lost out on a sale. read more

I have been reading over the reviews of Avalon Flooring, which we had Not done prior to having 5 rooms of flooring put in! Must admit some of the comments aren't very good and if I had read some of them I may not have used Avalon!! What we had done was get quotes from Home Depot, rather expensive! They wanted to tear out most of the existing flooring including a Foyer with ceramic tile, saying they could not go over it! Which in my naivete, thought well that's probably right, which of course entail more expense? Then we had Smart Carpet over they said No we can seal that Foyer floor & install over it, but must tear out the rather large kitchen floor with 2 small adjacent rooms...additional charges of course! Also Smart Carpet wouldn't give a "bottom line quote" until we signed a contract! We didn't care for that "kind of dealings" cancelled the deal! NO Stars for Smart Carpet!!! Also they didn't have any flooring samples of the color we selected that we could live with to help us decide on such a big project that we would live with forever! But once we did "finally" get the samples, which took some doing, having to talk to management!... the floor samples they sent were very cheap looking...again living with forever!! So, then we went to Avalon Flooring in Brick NJ, where we live. I had always thought they would be too expensive? Celeste gave us the best pricing quote right then and there, with a rough estimate of square,Vickie came over did a final measure, the Install Crew did an excellent job, were on time, sealed the Foyer, went over all the other existing floors perfectly, did all rooms in one day, moved furniture back and cleaned up!!! Not only does our home feel like a new house, it looks absolutely beautiful! Yes & Yes!! So we are giving Avalon Flooring of Brick,NJ "5 Stars"! I'm afraid any review of Avalon Flooring must note that the quality of their service is irrational and sometimes unprofessional. As an architect I've had the opportunity to deal with them several times recently. The first time I was pleased with the product and the service. Good so far. The second time was a horror. The installation was incomplete with damage inflicted to the floor immediately after installation. They left the job incomplete, filthy, with sawdust everywhere and the floor almost unusable. There was glue left oozing out of the joints and dripped on the surface. Before the floor was able to be acceptable I had to scrape the floor clean, mop the entire installation and eventually place the furniture to cover where they had damaged the floor!! ****As an architect, this is a company I would have serious reservations about dealing with in the future.**** read more

We went looking for a wool carpet that we could afford and found it here. Everyone was super-helpful and Stephanie is AMAZING. Unbelievable! I am trying to sell my house so we scheduled an Open House this weekend based on their commitment to have my floors installed this past Monday/Tuesday. Well, I'm sitting here looking at a big gap and I have no railing. On Tuesday at the end of the day (when I'm expecting total completion), they tell me they don't have all the pieces and leave the job incomplete. I was annoyed but I was cool b/c we still had a few days. So they call me to tell me it came in and they'll install it Thursday. Oh phew!--cutting it close but it'll work. Nope! They ordered the wrong piece, which was discovered by the installer, in my house (he was just as mad as I am). Their staff's response is essentially, "bummer. We'll get to it next week when the new one comes in." The installation department won't even call me back! My husband is currently driving all over Philadelphia, going to every single hardwood supplier trying to find a bullnose that works in the hopes that contractor friends of ours will take pity on us and fix this tonight. No! I work in client services and that's not how this works. You make it work to give your client what they were promised, WHEN they were promised it. Save yourself the headache and take your business elsewhere. (p.s. the cost was about $1K more than the "ballpark" the store rep gave me. Dirty trick). read more

I'm breaking that rule because my experience at Avalon was so extraordinarily bad that folks deserve to know before giving them a chance. We went and selected hardwoods for our home. The salesperson worked up a quote and when our builder showed up and requested the contractor pricing, they refused to fill the order altogether. Utterly ridiculous. Good showroom, but installation is an unsupervised crapshoot. I let my first disappointing experience with Avalon slide. I was charged for a good amount of extra square footage for carpet for my stairs, purportedly to allow "pattern matching" and centering of the pattern on the stairs. Of course, the installers then didn't center the pattern on one flight. I emailed about the issue. No response. I was too busy to make an issue of it. This time, I had my kitchen tile redone. Despite having material leftover, the installers installed tiles that they'd clearly cut too short at the end where the floor met the cabinet. They installed a corner tile where the edge had not even been cut straight. The quarter-round wasn't cut correctly to mate in the corners. The quarter-round was installed a 1/4" above the floor at one transition. Dried grout was left on my cabinet doors and walls. Additionally, as the grout was being finished on day 3, the day before Labor Day weekend, I was told someone would be over soon to install the quarter-round. No show. I had to leave my house disassembled for four more days before they finally did install the quarter-round, and then they did a lousy job anyway. I sent photos of the issues to the installation supervisor, who appears to not supervise after the crew first arrives. I was thanked for sending the photos, then nothing, then a few weeks later, they simply put the rest of the balance on my credit card. I don't want them to come back and "fix it." I'll do it myself. They've shown they don't have the care or craftsmanship to do it right and my house was already disrupted for nearly a week for what was done. However, when you see clear photographic evidence that the quality of service that was paid for was not performed, adjust the bill for that service. read more

Avalon flooring was recommended by our contractor, and he was 100% correct. Personalized service, very high-quality materials, and great follow-through. CONTEXT: We redid a home office and a bathroom. Let's start with personalized service: Angela A. helped us pick coordinating tile/flooring for the bathroom floor, shower floor, and shower walls. Larger "box stores" were a maze of products and options that we had no way to choose among. She seamless integrated our wants and needs with our space/design requirements and matched that to real-world products which work. How else to pick which grout for each tile? Do you need some aluminum trim for the tile edge in the shower? A premade Niche? Hardwood or vinyl flooring? Foam underlay for the Flooring? And a thousand other questions which were a mix of design and technical requirements that needed answers to get to the best plan. We wanted "in-stock" materials (given product availability issues now) and she worked that for us perfectly and followed-up on timing and availability as well as working with our contractor as the project evolved. I was ready to buy. I have someone putting it in. It would've been a quick 1,000 sale however not 1 person APPROACHED me. Even as my daughter and I left not ONE WORD was said to us!!! I would be so cautious about using Avalon's flooring for any products or services. We recently put a deposit down to have wood floors put in our basement. We had an agreement with a store manager and an associate to reduce the price upon return of some over purchasing of products from a previous job. Now that the site has our money, they will not honor the agreement and will now not give us a refund. They have a deposit and no floors have been delivered or put in place. Now we are having to dispute charges with our credit card company bc the store refuses to even talk to us. read more

I went to Avalon to get tile for my master bath and powder room. The store had a wide variety of tile for me to select. Stephanie B. was great. She helped me to select the tile and had a good eye for what worked together and what did not. I had a magazine picture that I wanted to copy and Stephanie helped me to identify the individual tile components that I wanted. She also gave me thoughtful recommendations on where I should differ. Angela our sales rep started out great -- she was fabulous when it came to knowledge of the products and helping us make selections. We told her we were on a strict deadline and that our carpets were to be installed by a certain day. She reassured us that it would not be an issue. She would sent a guy out for measurements and then would send us a quote by that night to place the order. Waiting waiting... no final quote. I email her, no response. I later call in to find out that she went on vacation and would not be available for some time. Ummm.. finish your work before vacationing!! If you promise your customer something, make sure you follow through. So unprofessional. Frantically we spoke to another employee named Eric - at first he said he wasn't sure we'd get the carpet up in time for installation since it will take a few weeks and that there was nothing he was able to do. After expressing my anger, he made a personal call down to the carpet mills to get the delivery up to us w/in 7 business days. Much better. So Thank You to him for understanding my urgency on this matter. Plus points. Next issue - carpet installation date. Our original installation date was pushed to a later date because their system was was messed up. Get organized people. One excuse after the next. Luckily, the new date worked for our schedule. But then came installation day - the carpet had stains! Unacceptable!! Really?!?! Where is the quality control here. Another mess up but at this point I expected this since they suck. I did not enjoy my experience here at all. My boyfriend and I are currently looking to replace the laminate flooring in our condo in the city. Avalon is one of the largest flooring companies in the area, so it made sense to us to start our search for the perfect new flooring here. As we entered through the automatic glass doors, there was a team of people at the front register. Out of the 4-5 hanging out, not one of them greeted us. As we continued through the rows and rows of various types of flooring, various employees passed by us, but never asked if we needed help at all. Once, we were looking at bamboo flooring towards the far back left corner of the store and I caught one employee even staring at us for a bit--he was probably contemplating whether or not he should spend time helping us. He must've decided that we weren't serious buyers or that we weren't worthy customers because instead of approaching us, he went into an "employee only" room in the back. This was such a frustrating experience. I couldn't leave any faster after that! The cost of the flooring seems a little more on the expensive side, but we did find some engineered wood that we would be interested in. I don't know what their installation fee is because obviously no one spoke to us about anything. We visited Lumber liquidators, Lowe's, and Home Depot in the same day after Avalon. Our experiences at all those other places were incredible in comparison. We are definitely not considering Avalon in any future home choices ever. read more

My husband and I went shopping for tile one Saturday afternoon and it went something like this: Husband: oh here's a sample of the hex tile I want, I just found it sitting here, I wonder if there's more with the black flower pattern in it? Me: Let's ask a sales person Me to two salespeople behind a desk, while holding said sample hex tile: Do you have hex tile with the flower pattern in it? Salesjerk (in a snarky voice): No, we don't carry anything even remotely like that in this store. Me: Really? Cause I'm holding a sample of hex tile in my hand right now and I found it in your store. We just wanted to know if you had the black and white flower pattern version of it. Slightly nicer saleswoman: Oh well, maybe we could order you something like that *Both proceed to flip through catalogs and find nothing* End Scene So the next week we headed over to Bell Floor Covering and they had both black and white hex tile and the well versed, educated tile salesman let us in on the little secret that you can make any pattern you want in hex tile since each hex will pop off of its casing. Spent $1600 on a double vanity which we thought was good quality since it was from Avalon. Less than 2 months went by and sink fell out. They won't repair offered a new top but that would require taring down entire new bathroom backsplash and pulling cabinet out. Never ever buying from Avalon again. I think that the people that work here are idiots. Spent about $1000 on tile, grout and other necessary items to tile one's bathroom, and had I known how unprepared for business this store is, I would've stayed on Washington Ave. Designer was not helpful. Clicking noises (from her mouth) was the response to every question. Other than suggesting something I distinctly said I wasn't interested in, that is. Very frustrating. The trim I bought to go around beveled tile looks terrible. Because the pieces are beveled, and not flat, the trim sticks out so much that the grout does too. They should've suggested bullnose tile or something to not create a thick line grout around the entire layout. Pick up was a nightmare, too. They said it would be ready by a certain date. Okay, great. Scheduled contractor to coincide with their above-certain delivery date. Called day before to confirm, they said it was ready. Called on the way there to double check, just to be sure. Nope. Tile was not ready to pick up. Okaaaaaay. No biggie. Just scheduled and paid the contractor to fiddle with his dick that day, but thanks! Called on my way the second day they promised it'd be ready, to make sure it was not another wasted trip. I was told that they DID NOT have the entire order in store. WHAT??! Was then called back to say they DID have the entire order in store, but I had to get there asap because the warehouse guy leaves soon. WHAT. THE FUCK. What an unprofessional, disorganized, overpriced nightmare. Good riddance. read more

Avalon does not stand by their products. I purchased hundreds of dollars of tile, grout, and other supplies from Avalon for a new home construction. Most of these products worked out fine, but there were two areas in the home where the TEC grout tuned out severely discolored. I brought this to the attention of my Avalon salesperson, and he refused any responsibility. Initially, without even looking at the problem, he blamed the contractor for not mixing the grout correctly. When I pointed out that the tile contractors are experienced and were careful to mix the grout according to manufacturer specifications, he said I could take up the issue with the grout manufacturer, TEC, but he warned that TEC was unlikely to help. Avalon sells TEC grout products exclusively in their 14 stores, and so you might expect them to be a little more concerned with the quality of the product. I did not ask Avalon to pay for the damages (which will be very costly) or even credit me the minor cost of their defective grout. All I asked is that they listen to my problem and help at least identify a reasonable solution. Avalon was not interested. Perhaps I have become spoiled by retailers such as Zappos and Amazon, which bend over backwards to make the customer happy, but it was shocking to see that Avalon does not care about customer satisfaction at all. read more

This company on a whole is Very difficult to deal with. They do not take any returns even if in stock items like grout and caulk . We were promised our order in 7-10 days. We were very clear about timelines. I told salesman if there's was any possibility the tile wouldn't be there by July 22 (10 business days) I would either order something else or go somewhere else. He assured me it would be there. It was not. They said earliest date would be 7/26. No one is willing to help with a solution and there isn't an "800"# or corporate office. read more
