I love how spacious this location is. There's tons of tables and the seating is broken up in a way that is intuitive and doesn't have you running Into tables and falling over chairs. They have boxes available to grab for yourself over by the bussing station which I love! I hate asking for boxes it somehow feels rude idk. The food is good! It's just like the downtown avenue bread food wise, haven't seen any glaring differences. The eggplant sandwich was so so good and I highly recommend it. The eggenues and a great breakfast sandwich and I like all the variety they have for them. Staff is kind, I don't have a ton to say about the service because you order your food and that's about the only interaction with the staff. But the ordering process is always nice and good! I only have one problem. Just one. The menu. Not what's on the menu! Just how it is laid out on the black boards. It's like 8 massive boards stuck together completely filled up with menu items. Zero negative space. It's hard to read. But that's such a weird critique and I like how much variety they have! But they don't have a menu like that down town so I know that the visual impact that is those white boards isn't a necessity. read more

Wonderful bread, fresh and full of flavor. Every time I come here I enjoy the sandwich and notice how great the bread is. I have had a couple of the vegetarian sandwiches that were fresh and delicious. Today I had the bahn mi sand which was was good and full of flavor. Wow Bellingham. WOW. This place rocks!! Line out the door but got my fresh brewed black iced tea immediately. Got my 12 oz americano within 5 minutes and got this amaz-balls sandwich within 10 minutes of ordering. 8 grain fresh made English muffin lightly toasted. No butter or mayo on this beauty. Local sources bacon cooked to a light crisp and one egg perfectly cooked. Melted Swiss, tomato and avocado finish it off. I'm sure I've had a better breakfast sammy but I truly can't remember when! I spent 4 hours here while waiting on car repairs. I started with breakfast. I had a mexi egg sandwich. I thought it would be good, but I was wrong. It was GREAT! The jalapeno cream cheese and rosemary muffin was amazing! Then I had a turkey sandwich with cranberries for lunch. It was fresh and crunchy (cucumbers). I had to keep my 4 year old busy while we waited here. We were comfortable and the bathrooms (which we visited at least 4 times) were clean. Thanks for making my car troubles a little more pleasant. So just after crossing the border from Vancouver, my sister got a nail in her tire. Of course it was late... of course it was a Sunday. We were screwed. Instead of being home in a few hours cuddling with the Ru, we were stuck overnight in Bellingham. Next morning, dropped the car off at Les Schwab and had 1-1.5 hours to wait. Uggghhh. No offense, but what the hell are we going to do in Bellingham?! The nice girl at L.S., recommended a couple places to get coffee. She mentioned Avenue Bread had really good coffee. Walking down James street, we passed a great outdoor fruit/veggie market and saw Avenue Bread in a an older strip mall type space. I automatically though, "Crap. Strip mall cafe? Uuuggghh... great." I've learned two things from this unfortunate car incident. One: thank goodness for Les Schwab's tire guarantee. Two: little Bellingham has the best eggs Benedict I've ever had in life. Their house made hollandaise sauce is AMAZING! I wanted to buy a gallon of that stuff to bring home. And their breads and the English muffin... Holy crap. SO good! Portland has a huge food scene. It's foodie heaven. But Avenue Bread & Deli... thank you for blowing my mind. I wasn't even hungry going in, but I scarfed down half my meal so fast, I couldn't finish my plate. Did I bring home the rest? You bet your ass I did. And it was still good later that night at home when reheated. Aside from our meal, staff is friendly and the rest of their baked goods looked amazing! Scones, cinnamon rolls, croissants... It all looked fresh and tasty. Oh... and their coffee? I couldn't tell you if it was good - I forgot to order some. And I won't be able to tell you the next time I stop by this place, because I won't be wasting belly room on coffee. Mmmm....delicious pastries and breakfast sandwiches, and omelets made of healthy and hearty goodness. On my most recent visit, I had an Eggenue sandwich on multigrain, with bacon and egg, gorgonzola and spinach, hold the tomato. It was delicious! I also enjoyed the maple twist I took home for later - like a flaky croissant with just the right amount of maple, baked to fluffy perfection. What stops me from the coveted 5 stars? Not the food - just the little details... I had to repeat my order several times to get it right, I was rushed while ordering and wasn't done before the cashier started repeating it back to me, my hot chocolate was barely warm and thus, was cold before I was done (but tasty) and they forgot the whipped cream that I had specifically asked for... just kind of discombobulated around there sometimes. It's busy, but they have enough people working there that they should be able to handle it. Besides the above, my one last friendly suggestion is to offer larger water glasses. Those itty bitty things had me running back to get more 3 times during my Eggenue. Regardless, Avenue Bread is definitely one of the better spots in Bellingham! I had to write a review for Avenue, because it is one of our favorite places in town. It is almost embarrassing how often my family and I eat there. They have the best breakfast in town, and a great family-friendly atmosphere. Order at the counter and they bring you your meal when it's ready. Lots of seating, friendly staff and great food. Our favorites are a LONG list, but here are the top 5: 1. Eggenues (We love the Country, French and Gourmet best). 2. Meaty breakfast 3. BLT&T with Avocado sandwich. 4. Chocolate croissant - the coffee is really good too. 5. Rosemary bread or english muffins (to go) Haven't had their dinners yet, but it's great for breakfast and lunch. First time to Avenue Bread. Relaxed atmosphere with plenty of seating and friendly staff. I ordered the Garden Deluxe which comes with potato chips as a side. The sandwich was delicious and fresh. My companion ordered a salad, which also looked quite delicious. I can appreciate the fresh ingredients, but I'd likely put this in the "I can make this at home" category. I could easily buy similar ingredients and enjoy this just as much. I would return here if a friend suggested it, but I won't become a regular. I'll have to stop in for breakfast sometime. Maybe that has something more unique to offer in order to make the visit more worth it for me. This would definitely be a great place to meet with friends. I had the three -two -one for breakfast here. It consisted of three flapjacks , two links (I chose the sausage patty ) and an egg. To say the least I was very disappointed. The flap jacks were thin and very oily with little flavor , gluten free maybe ?? The sausage patty tasted like any other sausage patty but cold to warm in temperature :/ The egg was good and so was the coffee. All for a little under 10 bucks. This is the second time coming to avenue bread. The first time I had eaten half of a Gorgonzola and meat sandwich then I got sick. At that time I wasn't sure if I got sick from the sandwich or not, but for dinner I ate the second half and also got sick afterwards. Maybe its the type of Gorgonzola cheese that my system did not like, maybe they served something bad , not sure . My love for eating sandwiches and breakfast have lead me to avenue bread and will give them a third try in the next couple of weeks. I went in for lunch to grab some takeout. I was rather disappointed in the cost vs. value. I ordered two sandwiches and two drinks and the total was 30+ tip. With the sandwich comes a tiny bag of chips. For the cost they could at least put in a pickle spear. I could have spent same amount at some other place and received a better value for the money IMO. The sandwich I ordered was the club. What and received was a plain sandwich that didn't even have some of the items they had listed on the menu board such as the lettuce or the red onion. My girlfriend ordered the cranberry turkey without the cream cheese. Her sandwich didn't have the cream cheese fortunately, but it was missing the cranberry, which is like the second most important part of a cranberry turkey sandwich! I have worked in restaurants in Whatcom County for over 30 years and I am surprised that they don't keep the CC separate, I am sure my girlfriend is not the only lactose intolerant person in Bellingham. What a hidden gem. I had no idea this place was here even though I've been going to Trader Joe's for years. After a weekend in Seattle, we popped in to TJ's for a quick shop before heading home. We were feeling peckish after shopping and did a quick search of what was nearby. Bingo, Avenue Cafe! They were closing in 15 mins but they gladly welcomed us in and told us not to rush. Everyone was so welcoming and nice. Nice big space with plenty of seating and a long counter by the window. We got a recommendation for the deluxe veggie sandwich which was chock full of fresh veggies and great tasting hummus. Pair all that with their freshly baked bread and it was a winner. It came with a side of potato chips and a pickle. My partner had an egg sandwich. It was on an English muffin so on the small side but they warned us about its size. Excellent taste, definitely a repeat. FYI: Since it was so late in the day, they don't serve hashbrowns (basically they don't serve it past 2pm). All in all, a great solid meal and definitely would return. read more

Yesterday after a stress filled morning I decided to treat myself to a sandwich on my favorite Rosemary bread. I ordered a basic turkey sandwich to go. I arrived home, mouth watering. I proceeded to unwrap my treat and about gasped at what lay before me. I'm not lying when I say I got a mini version of what should have been a sandwich. One 1/2 was no more than 2 1/2 long and maybe 2" wide. The larger 1/2 was maybe, maybe 3" long and 2" wide. $8 and I got an appetizer. So disappointed!! Whoever made my "sandwich" and I say that loosely should have known better than to make it on end cuts of a loaf. I feel totally ripped off. read more

As American expats living in Vancouver, we find ourselves driving past Bellingham a lot on our way to and from the Canadian border. When we're not in a rush, we make it a point to get off the 5 freeway and pop into Trader Joe's, and if we're hungry we pop into Avenue Bread and Deli, which is conveniently just down the street from Trader Joe's. Every time we've eaten there, we've had great friendly service, great carb-y breads, and fresh sandwich stuff. For example, I just got off a plane from Bellingham Airport and decided to visit Avenue instead of pay for overpriced airport food. Unfortunately, Avenue closes at 5pm and I just happened to walk in at 5:10. The gals who were cleaning up behind the counter served me anyway. read more

I'll always be a big fan of this place but my most recent visit had me disappointed! My salad was disappointing (huge but mostly lettuce...it could've used some other veggies to mix it up) and the sign said avocado but come to find out it was only in the dressing. The day I went in they also only had one soup which kind of defeated my purpose of going in. The girl working seemed disinterested but gave me extra dressing when I asked without any hesitation which was nice. My boyfriends breakfast sandwich was delicious and we loved the avocado on it! Although it was made on the wrong kind of bread, we didn't want to bug the girl working the front after I already had to ask for more dressing and had been questioning the avocado in the salad....I really hope we just had an off day with Avenue Bread because I would hate to give up on one of my fav spots in town! read more

Now that I can't eat gluten my life feels empty and sad because I can't have Avenue's rosemary sea salt bread... But their gluten-less bread is good enough. No gluten free bread is great, but theirs is homemade and actually has flavor. I wish they toasted it for their sandwiches because it can kind of taste like freezer sometimes, but I get why they don't do it for everything - maybe they would if I asked but I've never tried.
