I had breakfast here today and while it was good, there were a few problems. I ordered the Northwest Eggs Benedict....I love a good poached egg! The meal was to include smoked salmon on a rosemary English muffin topped with two poached eggs and hollandaise sauce....with a side of hash browns. My meal arrived within 10 minutes of me ordering and immediately I noticed the entire plate was swimming in hollandaise sauce....one positive was everything was nice and hot!! While I enjoy a good hollandaise sauce, I thought there was a bit much on this order. Anyway, I cut into my first poached egg and muffin and I noticed that the muffin wasn't toasted (or was barely toasted)...there was no "crunch" to it. Also, the yoke of my first poached egg was not runny as you'd expect a poached egg to be. The Salmon was sparse but what was there was good. My second poached egg was perfect...the yoke was nice and runny...but again the muffin was not toasted. The hash browns were cooked perfectly...nice a crispy on the outside and tender in the middle. Taste wise, all was good but the textures were missing So would I do this meal again at Avenue Bread? I'd say YES, but I'd specifically ask for the muffin to be toasted to a medium brown and I'd ask for them to go easy on the hollandaise sauce. read more

I headed in here with a group of 20. The staff at my school all had to head up to Bellingham for a training. I choose this place because it has so many different options, vegan, glueten free, etc. it's great for big groups, and is good for all budgets. Plus you pay at the counter when you order, which is so much easier for a group. I got an un memorable sandwich, I am writing this review a month later and I cant remember it at all. But I got a WONDERFUL ginger cookie. Seriously delish. The place is perfect for big groups and for a fresh healthy lunch. Avenue Bread is one of my favorite places to eat and I always run into friends. Breakfast, lunch every day-Delicious sandwiches, gorgeous salads, yummy soups. The local, fresh, ingredients contribute to the consistently, excellent quality. The restaurant is spacious and even when it is busy (always!) there is seating available. I have never waited for a table, although I have waited in line to order many times. For lunch try the BLT&T, or the turkey pesto. Or If it is rainy and cold, have the tuna melt. Spinach salad or Cobb with Tomato Basil soup. There are also gluten free options! Try the refreshing rosemary lemonade. For breakfast the French toast is to die for ( because it is all about the bread!) And Avenue, to my knowledge, is the only place in town that serves real maple syrup. :) They also serve eggs any way, great omlettes, bacon, (the absolute best) and sausage. The portions are generous, the staff is charming, and helpful, and you will enjoy a lovely meal in one of Bellingham's best local restaurants. See you there! read more

The salmon eggs benedict with the cream cheese & dill hollandaise sauce was the best I ever had. I thought I was in scandinavia it tasted so good. What a treat. The rosemary english muffins are a real special treat to take home. The drip coffee was quite average; the contrast between the high quality food and the average coffee was the only disappointment. Not sure what's going on here with the chef today. Super friendly people and inviting atmosphere but terrible sandwich. I got the jammin club which should have been called the jammin ranch. There was soooo much ranch on it I had to scrape the sides prior to biting in. So much that it oozed out the other side along with all the toppings and meat. Despite being a favorite go to place for breakfast, the quality and service has been slowly and with momentum getting worse. I regularly (as I go at least weekly ) get burned or untoasted bread, incorrect items, or ridiculous long waits for food with no warning. The staff of otherwise friendly individuals seem indifferent at best or just ignored. I still give two stars as food is usually good and convenient, but the unreliability and uncaring staff will keep me coming less and less. read more

I love love love a good sandwich and this is the place to find one in Bellingham. They roast and carve the turkey breast and you can tell. It is fresh and flavorful. My sandwich came with a pickle spear and a handful of crispy potato chips. The ambiance is something like a 1989 country store but it's sort of charming too. A couple of things that would've pushed this to 5 stars: When I pay $10 for a turkey sandwich, throw a couple of napkins in with it. There were none at the table or with the sandwich. I would have liked side options. I threw the chips away and would've preferred a salad of some kind or at least the option to upgrade my side. These are nit-picky but would have really made this place "As good as it gets" in Bellingham. All in all this is a great spot for a quick bite on your lunch break. Wow, what can I say? Avenue Bread has it all! I came in for Lunch after having my cars hood rudely smashed in by a deer that thought I'd slow down to let it cross the street. Really? I'm not some PETA supporting hippy who spends their days saving cattle from well meaning mass butchers. If animals start paying taxes then maybe I'll slow down next time but until then it's free range. Anyway, I was obviously in a bad mood knowing I'd have to fork out a couple thousand for car repairs seeing as how the deer didn't carry insurance (typical!) All I wanted was to put my tragedy behind me and get some grub. Thankfully, I was able to with the help of Avenue Bread and their top notch staff of slick sandwich slingers. To say the food was fantastic would be an insult. I ordered my usual gluten free, dairy free, bunless, veggie eggenue, with veggies subbed for 3 slices of fresh cheese placed in a 12oz coffee cup. My "Cup O' Cheese" as I like to call it was everything my cardiologist said it would be and more. Like my Grandad used to say, "if you go to the beach to feed the seagulls, then why is copper so damn expensive?!" He had dementia : ( But I digress. The point is that my meal was delicious, the service exceptional, the cashiers alluring, and they even gave me my Lunch free of charge after I threatened to sue for health and safety violations. So I guess the moral is that even if mother nature tries to bring you down, Avenue Bread is there to pick you back up. read more

The cost for self-serve are extremely expensive. Omelette @ $12.00 and coffee @$2.75 plus tax @ $1.28= $16.03 for a small mediocre breakfast. Way too expensive with slow service, self service and with request to bus your table on leaving, what am I paying $16.03 for? Food was OK but not great as potatoes were small order with extreme oil left on rare fry order. Eggs were OK but all ingredients were folded in well done eggs and that is it. My friend ordered the basic, 2 eggs scrambled, hash browns, toast plus coffee. He received a scramble with bacon, onions, tomatoes, bell pepper, hashbrowns, wrong toast order. Cost $7.50 + $2.75 +0.89=$11.14, not bad if you wanted a cheap scramble. They need HELP and lower costs to serve in Bellingham for breakfast meals. read more

Shame on you Avenue Bread! I am a sales manager for a medical company and we have many lunches catered for your communities providers and nurses. A different rep from another company accidentally had a large lunch to feed 30 people delivered to a doctors office that i was doing a lunch at. The OM called your location to inform them of the mistake. I witnessed numerous people eat off the cookie tray and sandwich tray from the incorrect office not realizing it was a mistake and shouldn't be there. Sandwiches and cookies were touched and eaten. I then Witnessed 2 catering staff members from Avenue bread come to the office and pick up the order that was eaten off and took to the correct office. They boxed up all food and i did inform them that it had been eaten off of. They did not care. The packed up and took it to the correct office. I personally knew the other doctors office and informed them of what happened. I am disgusted and appalled you allowed this i will NEVER eat or order from your restaurant read more

Came here with family and we all enjoyed our food. I found the chalkboard menu to be confusing, so I just asked some questions of the friendly cashier and ended up with an excellent breakfast omelet. Some people in the group were unhappy there was no table service, but I sometimes appreciate being able to get my own silverware and keep 5 or 6 bucks that would go to a tip. A piece of good advice: Go between 3 and 4 and you can get 2 baguettes for the price of 1. Slice up 1 baguette and freeze it. Use the other the same day or the next toasted/pain perdu (French toast). Bad, bad, bad. A really unfortunate mess. Ridiculous prices, terrible food, lousy staff. Two awful sandwiches with no extras cost over $25.00 and it's a half hour wait - some "lunch place." No management or leadership in evidence, just bad employees providing bad food, slowly. Some folks really love this place and I have no idea why, I'm guessing they just don't know any better. Bathrooms filthy, staff comatose, food takes way too long and is not worth the wait. If you are dissatisfied the staff tells you that's just too bad, would you like to pay for another meal and wait another half hour? If you have plenty of money, plenty of time, don't mind being treated like cattle and have no taste buds, this is the place for you. read more

I have eaten here many times and thought it OK, but not great. This morning I was in around 10:15 and ordered Eggs Benedict. They were not busy and should have had no problem with a single order. The egg yolks were hard, the ham was paper thin and burned on all edges. The "English Muffin", which they make and are proud of, was so tough I could not cut with a table knife. The amount of hollandaise sauce on the two eggs was so small that it didn't even cover the "english muffin." I did sit in an area where I could see and her the kitchen working. They were having a great time singing and joking with each other. At least they were having a good time. It is not often that I say this much negative about normally fairly good establishment. LOVE it - always! We returned today 6/16/13. We are in Bellingham every other weekend. As always, it is excellent with fantastic people (especially Jamieson, today). We tried the Eggs Benedict and it was the best ever! The reason I am updating this is that the person who rated them one star needs to head back to McDonalds. I understand that there are some in Wal Mart now, so you should feel right at home. You sound as though you have a real chip on your shoulder and an anger issue. This is not expensive at all. They could well charge much more for the quality and quantity they put out. We always get a to-go box for leftovers. Perhaps you need to simply stay at McDonalds. Avenue Bread at ALL locations (especially James) has some of the friendliest and nicest people in the industry. James is the furthest from our home on the South side, but we always end up there, because of the people. My guess is that really nothing, except McDonalds, makes you happy. Get a life! read more

The service at this location is terrrible, and they'll make no appologies, not the staff or managment. It's not been just one time but many. A friend and I have a running dialog, "Should we give them another chance?" We keep going back and the service is still terrible....but the food was always good, the last few times the food wasn't good either...bad service eventually does equal bad food. In short Avenue Bread's like most Bellingham establishments. All the servers have a since of entitlement. Egnore it and don't take in personal.
