I've been coming here once a week to meet friends for breakfast for about 2 months now. I get an Eggenue breakfast sandwich and a coffee every time, so I can't speak to the rest of the menu. But what I get is really good (the Country Eggenue on a rosemary English muffin). It seems reasonably priced as well when compared to similar establishments. The staff is friendly and pleasant. For a while they were getting half of my orders wrong, forgetting about them completely sometimes, giving me the wrong food. Today at 3 pm I went there to read and enjoy a late lunch, but the guys in the kitchen decided to party and cranked up loud music, despite the 10 or so customers still in the place trying to talk or work on laptops or just enjoy a quiet lunch. Shout out to Avenue Bread on James Street's manager, Diane. This morning my husband, mother-in-law and I stopped in for breakfast. Hubby was starving, and ordered a Benedict with sausage. A bit into our wait, Diane told us they ran out of Hollandaise, were making more, but it would be an additional 10 mins. or so. That wasn't going to work for us, so she asked if she could bring some toast to munch on, at no charge. Great! When the Benedict arrived, it was the wrong one. Got that sorted out, then Diane came back with a refund for the Benedict, and said she'd like us to select a loaf of bread to take with us on the way out. She took a negative situation, applied great customer service, and turned it into customers who are eager to back. Thanks, Diane! read more

I went in to get a simple grilled cheese 25 min before closing only to be refused service because " sorry, we are closing soon and the grills are shut off for any hot food" What's the point of even being open? Everyone raves about avenue, and I think they're okay, but I've never really had a sandwich here that tasted like anything. The bread is very good, and the soups are decent. It's a cute little restaurant, but bland, dry sandwiches. They're fairly cheap for a lot of food, though, which is a plus. Split a sandwich with a friend for like $5 each and you'll each get a big half of a sandwich, chips, and a pickle. read more

I loved my omelette and all the ingredients were top quality. My husband had a sandwich and he said it was good, but he'd rather have had my omelette. I love getting locally sourced ingredients and a healthy meal, so the prices seem just right for what you're getting. The service was awesome and the guy at the front who took our order was really enthusiastic and had great recommendations for what to order. Yesterday I had a fantastic French dip sandwich....was very happy with both the sandwich and the service! Almost an hour later I couldn't find my purse and I realized that I had left it hanging on the chair! I had a panic and quickly called Avenue and was happy to hear that an employee had found it moments after I had left....I rushed back to see if the cash I had in my purse was still there.....yes! Got stuck in north Washington with a flat while coming back from BC. Ended up spending the night at a motel and headed to Les Schwab in the morning. They told us about this joint and we hit it up for some breakfast. The best breakfast I had in a long time. Eat anything and it will be good. Will def swing by on our next trip north. read more

I like the dinners at this restaurant. However, the service is slow slow slow making for an almost painful experience when dining with children as you try to keep the kiddos entertained for the 30 min+ wait time. Also, the service is inconsistent. At a recent visit we enjoyed bread before our meal arrived and also a complimentary loaf to enjoy at home while tonight we received neither. Eggs Benedict Florentine is my barometer for a good breakfast restaurant. Avenue Bread exceeded my expectations this morning. And the coffee is good too! The only weird thing I noticed at 7am this Sunday morning is that all the other customers look like me: older men with white beards. We went to the James St location on Saturday, I ordered two egganue's to go & it was supposed to be a 25-30 min I stood and waited, and waited. At the 1/2 hour mark I went up to the counter and asked if they could check on my food because it had been 1/2 an hour and no one had called my name, she looked around and found our food sitting on the top of the soup pots, I'm guessing that's their "warmers"... she then tosses onto the counter in front of me and walks away. I stood there & waited, and she came back, "is there something else" she says rudely, I said "can I have a bag please", and " our food has been sitting there for who knows how long, I've been sitting here waiting to be called"... again a RUDE response "apologies" and she walked away. Our food was not good & it was very rubbery and chewy, and tasted like it was sitting for a while, the cheese had even started to harden again because it wasn't all that warm any longer. This was my husbands first experience with an Avenue Bread breakfast, he likely won't return as the food wasn't worth the wait or the price. Generally I have good experiences at Avenue so that's why I'm giving 2 Stars, but this experience should be a 1 star. read more

Today I have to put another local Bellingham sandwich shop on my "will never eat here again" list . It's sad it has to come to this, I really do enjoy there's tuna on rye! It just comes down to poor customer service , again and again. You would think with a 10 dollar sandwich you would get service with a smile, instead the famous eye rolling , or your my last customer before my smoke break. The James Street location has the rudest staff ever. The food is very good, bread is fantastic, but of all the locations this one has just the worst staff ever. They will look anywhere but at you. They seek out anything else to do but wait on you. I came in to purchase a few items and after standing at the counter waiting (nobody else was in line) for five minutes while the young women behind the counter hid and carried on a nonwork related convo, I was asked (again, no eye contact) if that was ALL I was getting. This was the first time I've been to this location but I've been to both other locations and have had no problems. However, the servers at this location were AWFUL!!! The girl at the register mistook my order and I revived the wrong sandwich so I went up to the counter to ask for the correct order. I was told very rudely that they couldn't make me another sandwich. I eventually conceived them that I had not ordered this sandwich and just wanted a plain grilled cheese, which is what I had originally ordered. They finally agreed although they were very rude and practically shouting at me. I waited 15 minutes for a new sandwich. (There was no one else in line). When I revived sandwich the server threw it down in front of me and walked away. I picked the sandwich up and it didn't even stay together! They had used half a slice of cheese and just stuck it under the broiler instead of putting it in the panini press like usual. This is the worst service I have received at ANY restaurant. I was polite throught the whole process because I'm not one to usually complain, but these girls were so rude and unprofessional. I'll be sticking to the Fairhaven location from now on. read more

Delicious for breakfast or lunch! Their salads with homemade dressings are fantastic, and I've never had a sandwich from here that I didn't like. They serve a great eggs benedict for breakfast too. Give the tomato soup a try, it's great on a cold day, and the chocolate croissants are a nice treat to take on the go. Portion sizes are quite large, my only complaint is that it seems a bit pricy for soups, salads, and sandwiches. read more

avenue bread has suprised me. i had a vegetarian sandwitch with vegetables and cream cheese. i have noticed that a sandwich without meat is gross so its been hard being vegetarian, but with fresh vegies, local bread, and homade cream cheese, that does the trick. :) read more

We've always enjoyed breakfast at Avenue Bread on James Street - especially since we discovered the value of splitting the 2 egg meaty! We (finally) went there tonight to try their supper menu. First, you start with a big ol' colander full of a sampling of their fresh made bread. I love that you can order salad family-style; we got the Gourmet for three (could have ordered it for two and had plenty for the three of us) - delicious! We ordered three different entrees, all of which were nummy and plentiful. We will go back, no doubt. I don't want to be too 'over-the-top' for fear that the review will get tossed into the "filtered" category - but the service (outstanding), food (delish) and setting (warm and inviting since they painted and changed the lighting) was top-notch!
