This place is in a great location and it's great when you're able to get a table outside (when it's nice out). In my experience the food has been pretty good. However, the service/staff has often been pretty horrible. Below I'll provide two examples: I was sitting inside with my cousin during one of the coldest days of the year. However, we kept noticing it was freezing as hell inside. Why? Because a waiter kept opening the side door (and holding it wide open for minutes at a time) to keep chatting with his friend outside! One day my friends and I were sitting outside--eating and drinking. After ordering our first round of drinks the waitress disappeared. For a long time. And the place wasn't even very crowded. We were standing and waiving for the waitress to come back so we could order more drinks and she ignored us and leaned at the bar chatting with the bartender. She finally walked by asking if we were okay and we were like, "No, can we order more drinks?" and she just kept walking. Next thing you know she was leaning on the bar chatting with the bartender again! I was fed up and approached the bar to order our drinks from him and she almost had a heart attack because we didn't order from her. The only time in the couple of hours we were there that she was actually attentive was when we were leaving--she ran over to make sure we tipped her. Very sad. read more

We had a brunch here. We were sat in the back at the two top. My old distressed looking chair was super wet, but it was not visible since the chair was made with some kind of foam rubber. So I literally sank with my butt into somethings wet and stinky:( I had to go home and change my pants after the brunch, cause my pants were sticky and wet and smell terribly:( not a pleasant experience. the food was mediocre, not tasty at all ( we had a crab cake Benedict and atlantic omelette) and nothing special about the drinks either. As usual my experience in this place was fabulous!!! We had to wait little bit for our seafood arugula salads which my friend loved too! But completely forgot that was brunch time. But you know what? Have been wanting to go to this cafe for a long time but with so many other good restaurants to go on 30th avenue and in Astoria I just never made it there, until 5/1/21. The service was okay and the food and drinks were delicious. Was looking forward to returning until I checked my receipt and saw that there was a 3.99% service charge on a $130 bill. WTF?! Re-checked their website and was really annoyed to find out the FEE is for paying via credit card, which is basically illegal (but the law doesn't inforce it) and a pretty crummy way to treat your customers. They call it a "cash discount" on their menu but it isn't a discount it's a FEE for non-cash paying patrons. I'll just go to Shady Lady, Sugar Freak, Tru, Cafe Ovelia and the other 100 places in Astoria that won't charge me a fee. It's not the money it's the principal! I ordered my lunch through Grubhub. I paid using a credit card on the Grubhub app. First off, they never inform you the food is ready, second they don't know if the order is paid or not. I took my lunch and crossed the street. A waiter ran out and screamed across the street saying "hey!!! Did you pay?" I had to cross the street and tell him yes I did via credit card through Grubhub. While I was telling him this, a girl stuck her head outside of the door and told him yes, she did. He then told me never mind and turned around and went back inside. No sorry for the mistake. At first, it seemed that we were the only non-greek people trying to order a Frappe, and of course not knowing what a Frappe is. Our waiter, however, was very helpful and enthusiastically explained the various cafe specialties and offered great insight into, to us unknown, mediterranean dishes. Been going to Avenue since they first opened their tiny doors before the expansion and I was forced to have my frappe somewhere else! As I have read in other reviews this place is definitely a Euro/Greek Cafe, if you do not understand our culture, please don't try to change it. We have attitudes, we smoke, we like loud music basically we do what we want. This place would get 5 stars if they would only change a few of the staff and maybe kick-out one of the owners. This place was not in anyway trying to be hipster. It did however try to give off a casual Greek atmosphere following suit with the 'real' Greece by pumping up the volume as the time switched from dinner time to night-cocktail time. The place was busy - another reason I'm unsure why the low star-wattage. Choosing to sit at the bar, we had a great view of the space on a perfect night to have the place opening up to a small patio area in front. Every plate that came from the kitchen convinced us we had to order something. So we had the antipasto appetizer and we devoured it. It really tasted fresh, just-made, and DELICIOUS. Matched up perfectly with our well mixed cocktails. I found the prices reasonable and considering I enjoyed my visit, very fair. Service was great. We even commented on the acting manager on the floor. He came over to ask how our drinks were and I saw him stop a plate as it came out of the kitchen and was sent back to be re-plated before served. The bartender was new, so he fumbled a little and had to re-ask our order. But this didn't bother me because he was friendly and the experience tender was all over it. read more

The drinks are strong, albeit expensive. But if you're used to eating and drinking in the other loud techno places on 30 ave, this place won't seem to be out of place. The music is way too loud for a restaurant. Its more club level. The generic techno music offers little variety so that it just becomes a vague overpowering din. There's plenty of outdoor seating. The menu is alright but not too different than other places. Also, we had 3 waitresses and neither seemed too interested in serving us at all. I can't say I felt too positive about the overall experience here. Went here for brunch with my boyfriend and just had a horrible experience. It was a Saturday not very busy and no server came over for a solid 10 minutes. Once she did it took another 10 mins for our drinks to come out and then another 5-10 mins for our food to come out. I don't understand all the bad reviews. Maybe I went on a good day. Today I took my family to this place for Easter brunch. We got seated right away and preferred to eat indoors. After our server took our order, within less than 10 minutes we got our food. I got a continental breakfast while everyone else had pitas or sandwiches. What I liked about the food is it's not high in salt, oil, or sauce like mayonnaise. For dessert, we had crepes which was rich with strawberries, bananas and nutella. At the end, we had to wait a bit because everyone was paying for the bill and leaving at the same time since lunch time was ending, but I give props to the server for being apologetic and asking me if I enjoyed the food when I was leaving. I still gave him a little over 20% tip. I would recommend. Even if you want to come for drinks and sit in a cafe. The place is busy, but the place is well staffed. read more

I had delivered a Turkey club sandwich. It was awful. I feel like if something as simple as a club sandwich can't be made well, I must question everything else. I've been here a few times for dinner, drinks and brunch. The food is pretty good, but the service is awful. The first time I came here, my friend and I got dinner and drinks. We had no idea what the price of the drinks was...turns out they were $16 each and we were appalled. When it came time to pay, we both whipped out our debit cards and were informed they don't take them. I told the server very politely that they should inform you of that beforehand or have a sign in the front. She said they used to have a sign, but the manager took it down. Very bad call by management. We both had to go next door and take out cash. Of course we were charged a fee for it. Despite the fact that she didn't tell us they don't take cards, she was probably the best server I've had there. The second time I came here for dinner, We waited about ten minutes before anyone came over and then our server seemed disinterested in serving us. They got my meal wrong, which is okay, but they didn't really apologize or offer anything to make up for it. My friend was almost done eating before I started. The time I came here for brunch was probably my best food experience. It's pretty cheap and good food. They don't have an unlimited drink special, but the drinks were cheaper for some reason. Unfortunately, it was during the summer and they let people smoke inside since it's all open. I almost said something because I cannot stand the smell of smoke (and it's illegal in NY), but I held my tounge. Our server was extremely rude and unattentive the entire time. I felt like she didn't even care that we were there. Everyone who works here is European and has a strong accent. My friend got $7 for a plate of 4 waffles (triangle shaped), 2 eggs, bacon (or sausage, etc), 3 pieces of toast, may have been 4, home fries (or reg. fries), a little house salad with cucumber and tomato, and coffee (or tea). I love the coffee at this place, so I decided to order in what I hoped would be a very refreshing salad. When I opened the container for my watermelon/feta salad, I literally burst out laughing. It was a container filled with just cubed watermelon - no greens, no mint leaf, no balsamic/oil/juice/seasoning of any kind....nada. Inside the bag, there was a little plastic condiment container with some feta crumbles to dump into the watermelon. Seriously? Did I seriously just pay $11 for a bowl of (albeit juicy and delicious) watermelon cubes and a sprinkling of an average feta? Perhaps the justification for the price is related to the gargantuan portion - but, I would rather pay that same amount for a smaller and more flavorful dish that I did not have to assemble myself. Had brunch here on a rainy Saturday. The food was amazing! I highly recommend the eggs and waffles, great value! The atmosphere is great too. We sat for about two hours drinking the most amazing coffee! It wasn't too crowded when we got there around 11:45 but it definitely started to fill up as it got later.
