I had been hearing that the avocados taste great in California. I discovered this gem in a shopping plaza not far from where I was staying. Upon arriving, they seated me immediately. The place is very small, but the environment is nice and cozy. Once seated, I was presented with a food menu and a margarita menu. The margarita menu was quite extensive. Very impressed by the selection. As far as the food, I ordered table side guacamole, ceviche and shrimp fajitas. They brought out chips and salsa to table immediately. Salsa was flavorful and you could see the freshly chopped ingredients. Nice balance of spice. Wasn't too spicy but you could feel it a little. We off to a nice start people.... The table side guacamole came first. A nice lady came with a folding table, bowl, spoon, avocado, cheese, onion, spices and a few other things. Before I could blink, she had the avocado out the shell and into the bowl. She added everything, mashed it up, seasoned it very well and scooped it all into a red tortilla shell. I wanna say she made the guacamole in a minute flat. That was some of the fastest guacamole making I've ever seen! Upon first taste I just had to appreciate. When I tell you it tasted just like butter.....smooth, silky, creamy and melt in your mouth good. Mmmm mmmm! I mean this was just the guacamole! Geez! Also depending on your party depends on how much table side guacamole you get. Each person gets 1 avocado plus a half of another one. So if there are 4 in your party they will use 6 avocados. Ceviche came next. This had me on another level. I could taste the citrus and it blended well with the fresh fish, onions and tomatoes. It didn't taste like there was too much acid. It was a nice balanced amount. I need a bowl of this daily. Also if there was not enough of a citrus bite for you, they had a sliced lime on the side which you could squeeze to get your citrus fix. The portion size of this is large. If one person wanted this as a meal alone it could happen. Shrimp fajitas are up on deck next. I enjoyed these as well. I just wish they would have shelled the shrimp completely or shelled everything except tail. They split it down the back. Once the shrimp began to cook quickly, the shell separated everywhere except at the tail and it was hanging off the shrimp. It wasn't appealing, but I didn't mind removing it with my hand or a fork. Also I asked for flour tortilla and never received them. I didn't really complain because I had quite a bit of food between the guacamole and ceviche beforehand. Price point it wasn't too bad. Everything plus tip brought me to almost 60 dollars. If you just want fajitas, that's only 22 dollars. Avila's is the best Mexican food chain in California. I have been to every location and they are all a little different. Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa, Corona Del Mar, Lake Forest, Santa Ana, Orange, San Clemente and Hunting Park. I'm sure I forgot bone!! I love me some Avila's. Looks like a dive bar with decoration. This was the saddest place on earth. Had to be....no one smiled or gave any sign of enthusiasm for their job or customers. Sometimes I felt the waitresses were disgruntled. They kept going off in corners talking to each other, but I shrugged it off, I was really hungry. Getting To the point I orders chicken tacos and 2 servings of gua it was decenT, but I immediately got a small little nagging headach, so I drank lots of water I took a nap, but it was still there. It was there all night. That morning and for the next 2 days I experienced diarrhe, the chills and cold sweats. It felt like I had a nasty stomach virus. And then it was gone. Beware. We arrived on a Friday night and were surprised to find the place packed. It's a smallish single room restaurant so it's noisy and festive with all sorts of photos, ceramics, metal sculptures, animal skulls, surfboards, etc. randomly covering the walls. We had a brief wait before being seated. I ordered a horchata to drink (not listed on the menu) as I enjoyed their delicious chips and salsa. Our delightful waitress took my order for a 2-item combination: a pork tamale and beef taquitos (3) which came with the standard rice and beans and dollops of sour cream and guacamole. The tamale was disappointing - the masa was too thick and dry and there was very little pork. The pork could have used some seasoning although it was very tender and the green sauce gave it a little heat. The taquitos, on the other hand, were fantastic with a tasty crisp shell and well-seasoned beef. My wife had the Mama Avilas chicken soup and thought it was authentic & delicious but overpriced for the amount you get. My rating doesn't reflect her experience but I thought I'd mention it anyway. The crowd here is...well...I can best describe it as the type of crowd that necessitates the television in the corner of the room being turned to a tennis match rather than soccer (er...excuse me...futbol). 3.5 stars generously rounded up thanks to great service. read more

This has been a bookmark of mine for a while. A lot of my friends rave about this place. I found myself in the area earlier this week, and hungry, and decided to give it a shot. The one thing I loved, is they have ground beef tacos. Those are hard to come by at Mexican restaurants for some reason. The pictures on Yelp of the enchiladas looked amazing, and I am not usually a fan of enchiladas, but I decided to try one anyway. I ordered the combo with a ground beef hard shell taco and a shredded chicken enchilada. My plate looked amazing and everything looked so good. I really enjoyed the taco, and the hard shell did not fall apart which is awesome! I didnt care for the enchilada... I dont know what it is, I have only found one enchilada EVER that I have liked. I sat on the outskirts of the restaurant, at the tables where one side is a bench and one side is regular chairs. I sat on the bench, and the table was SO low. I couldnt lean on it, otherwise I was completely hunched over and uncomfortable. It was a little hard to eat like this, as well. The service was decent, I had to say excuse me three times with no response and wait until someone finally noticed I was out of water. I will definitely give this place another try and just order differently. read more

We used to love this place. The food is good and well priced but the service has gone downhill. We arrived on a Monday night at 6:00 and it was clearly busy. Totally get that. But not a single server ever looked at us ( 4 or 5) while we were standing there, for a while. I wish one would have said, " thank you for your patience, someone will be with you shortly." I usually love this place. I ordered Chicken Mole through DoorDash. Got an email saying they were out of Chicken Mole and they replaced my order with Chili Verde. Looked at their menu and saw that's pork. Called to say I don't eat pork -- this is all within maybe three minutes. I got transferred to a rude woman who said she didn't receive a cancellation and the order had already been picked up, so too bad. I am so happy to say that one soup I try once in a while is albondigas soup. Most times unimpressed. I have have Avila's Azteca Soup it is delicious. Today I was blown away by Avila's Albondigas Soup. I ordered through Uber Eats. The flavor was fantastic. Meatballs were large I had to cut them in quarters to enjoy. Big chunks of vegetables. I can't wait to order the soup again. I think next time my family will drive up to Foothill Ranch and eat at the restaurant. read more

I go to the local Avilas near me there quite a few in the area and I usually have a good experience I have never had bad service at any of the locations. The food is made well pretty consistent and portion sizes are very large. I always get a filling meal and the margaritas are very good And they have a variety of flavors. This a family family friendly and cozy restaurant. That is located in the Ralph's shopping center. First time nibbler here. Every time I drove by I always see folks coming in and out. Once I received the menu I see why this place is busy. Several home special dishes. The menu breaks down popular, traditional, and family recipe dishes. I went traditional and ordered the chimichanga that was served in a large portion with rice and beans. This along with free chips and salsa I had enough to take home for another meal. We had the Shrimp and Steak Fajitas, we only got two pieces of Shrimp and the rest was steak and a lot of bell pepper, we requested some more pieces of shrimp and they were able to spare more with no extra charge. Almost 5 stars. I visit here almost once a week and this is my first time leaving a review because I want to give them 5 stars but I can't. The food is AMAZING! That is the only thing that keeps me coming back. The Taco Tuesday is great and Margaritas are always on point. But the service is below average. Every time we go, it takes almost 20 minutes to receive our drinks and then another 20 for food to come. Lucky they have chips and salsa out so that holds us over for a bit. The server usually always forgets something on our order as well. Last time they forgot to bring out 2 of our tacos, the time before that it was a side of rice, time before that it was a drink. It is literally always something. If they could just get the device together this place would be perfect. read more

My family has always loved this place... the service has fallen off. We have seen cockroaches the last two visits and the staff just killed them and moved on like nothing happened. I really wanted to like this place. I tried. A few friends recommended it and they seemed to have positive reviews so I did a takeout order on a Friday. My husband picked it up, and we realized after he got home that one of our entrees was missing. So I called the restaurant and the terd on the phone was totally rude to me and argued with me, even though I had a receipt and ordered on line so it was clear as day that I ordered 3 entrees and only got 2. Then he blamed UberEats and said it was the driver, even though the order was for pickup (again look at the receipt). After much back and forth I finally got them to reluctantly agree to make the food that I paid for so my husband could pick it up again. He got stuck waiting 20 minutes while the rest of order got cold at home. So we finally have the food that we ordered and paid for and I'm thinking this must be the best food ever. Wrong. The rice was instant, the chicken was dry, and the sauce tasted like they poured it straight from a can. The Mexican pizza was mostly coagulated cheese and the tacos were just sad little things that didn't even fill out the take out box. Totally and completely disappointed. I've had better fresher food at fast food restaurants. And whatever you do, don't inconvenience them with a takeout order. read more

OK, as far as mexican food goes, this is a good decent place. Not everything is authentic, but rather to fit in to the locals, which is fine. The service here was great, our server was tentive with bringing water and making sure we needed anything. The food was ok. We had an enchilada plate and a carnitas plate. The rice, good, the beans could have been better. The enchiladas were ok, but I doubt the sauce was fresh. The carnitas were good but a bit dry. In short, not sure if I will make it a point to return, but I will think about it. read more
