We have had problems with Avis before (will describe below), but they had a discount code with my employer that we could not resist for our Maui trip. With trepidation I decided to try them one more time.
We waited in line that night patiently. We witnessed another customer get into a heated argument with the employee who manned the door, allowing only one person per party into the room. At first our sympathies lay with the employee, at least until she shouted, with extreme sarcasm, "Welcome to Hawaii!" Well that's just not professional.
At the counter, another agent refused to honor our discount, telling us the price would be double. Long story short, we walked out without a rental car rather than give Avis any more money. We wound up next door at Dollar, piecing together a rental for about $250 more than our original reservation but $250 less than Avis wanted to rip us off for. The agent at Thrifty/Dollar was extremely nice and appalled at Avis's treatment. There was no line.
Prior to this, we rented a 9 passenger van from Avis in central Madrid. The location was in a hotel, near public transportation, so our big group could get to the car from the airport. When we showed up at the hotel desk, they were extremely confused and said there was no Avis branch at that address. We showed them our printed reservation. More confusion. They kindly called the number on the reservation for us since we speak only mediocre Spanish. Apparently there WAS a car for us, but it was located an hour away by a couple of trains. Well since 9 passenger vans don't grow on trees, we had no choice. Two of us took that 3 hour detour to the satellite branch, which was in an industrial area outside the city, while the other 7 of us cooled our heels sitting in the hotel lobby. Lots more confusion, but eventually we got that van. When we received the final bill, we were charged hundreds for a second driver, which our agreement clearly said would be free, in writing. Contesting with Avis is an exercise in long phone holds and futility, with poorly trained and unhelpful agents, but I tried. Ultimately, I had my credit card block the extra driver fee and vowed never to use Avis again. Until the Maui mistake.....
This is really a bad company. read more
