We were starving after a visit to Draeger's. As we drove around, this place caught our eye. My husband and daughter went down to order as I waited in the car. As I was preoccupied in the car, after awhile it seems like they were gone for quite some time. I sent a text to see if they even got their order. Apparently there were a lot of pickups and doordashers. They had 2 tables set up outside their place, under some popup tents and a couple already occupied one table. One of my favorite spots in downtown San Mateo, with lots of options for delicious wraps. My favorite is the breakfast crunchwrap, but every other recommendation the staff has given me has been great as well (special standout is Matt's Protein Wrap). The staff here is awesome, I've seen them take the time to remember regular customer's preferences and recommend new things. I've heard great things about this spot and saw the great reviews as well. I went in and ordered obviously an avacado toast with eggs, monterey jack cheese, and jalapeños on rye bread. Presentation was good. Portions were perfect. Avacados were perfectly ripe. Eggs tasted fresh but lacked seasoning. There was enough cheese there. The most disappointing part for me was the jalapeños. I was expecting fresh jalapeños to be melted into that cheese. It already lacked salt and pepper, but if the jalapeños were fresh and melted in. This would have given the kick it needed (since I'm wanting that spice factor ordering an item with jalapeños) and would have made a solid avacado toast. The other dish that was ordered was a #6 in the sandwich section. Also a bit disappointing with slightly burnt toast and again, no seasoning. And by seasoning I just mean the basic salt and pepper. For it to not be busy and still have that to be a food quality for the first time of being there, I wasn't impressed. You'll still see the old table settings and counter design, which definitely make for an interesting atmosphere. The thing I had to try was their namesake dish, the avocado toast (with tajin seasoning). So.. despite being over $4 for an order of two slices, the toast was nothing more than stale, off-the-shelf supermarket bread. The mashed avocado mixture was good (it had a nice lemony zing), and the salty-spicy Mexican Tajin seasoning was definitely a creative touch. But how is this even nearly worth the price? My theory is that this restaurant's name is a misnomer. Despite being called "Avocado Toast," the selection of said toast make up a tiny part of the menu, which is actually dominated by a variety of different wraps, salads, and sandwiches. My partner cannot stop going to Avocado Toast. He is a crunch wrap fiend and when I go with him I get the GF Avo toasts - which are excellent and...you can also pick two types in the same order! Now that's a business innovation I can get behind. I would say the only downside is that it's not open for long enough in the day - I'm a night owl and would like to go for dinner, but no luck. This is probably one of the best breakfast burritos I've ever had! Stuff isn't as spicy as I liked it, and the pico de gallo that comes with one of the burritos is just the sort of stuff you'd get at a generic brunch place -- not quite as spicy or Californian as I'd like it. Walking in, it honestly reminded me of a subway except they offered more than just sandwiches.
