Coordinated with Axe Thro Co. through e-mail to host a surprise party. E-mail was a bit of a game of tag at first, but once we did calls communication went much more smooth. Since we were a party of over 24 people, I was charged the hourly rental rate to book the whole place. I would say the pricing is fair! They informed me of food packages, and I just realized it's advertised as a pizza and pretzels package but we just had pizza. I was hoping to be able to bring in some snacks for guests with food allergies, but same as most places, they do not allow outside food at all. They did their best to help me accommodate a gluten-free guest by serving salad as well. I am disappointed that they also do not allow cakes/cupcakes, especially considering we rented the space out. I understand the rule, just something to note. The employees were all great. They communicated with me throughout the party to ask me about timing of certain events ("Would you like me to wait a few before asking for a group photo in case more guests arrive," "Should we keep pushing more pizzas out") We were also able to go over the rules as one big group, which was nice. Throughout our axe throwing time, there were coaches giving tips. They did a wonderful job knowing when to step back and when to interject. Overall enjoyed our time and would recommend Axe Thro Co. for any sized event, even date night.

Went on a double date here and it was soo much fun! Easy to book and no issues with parking. Staff gave an introduction to how it works and how to throw. I've done axe throwing many times, but have never had a digital game to go with it. It was great! Lots to choose from to keep things interesting. A few critiques: 1. I wish there were more axe options than a standard axe 2. We told staff we didn't want anything to eat and they kept coming up to us multiple times to tell us the kitchen was closing soon 3. Staff would try to correct our throwing. While normally I wouldn't mind them doing that, they actually caused half of us to get worse Would've been 5/5 if not for these.

Came in later in the day on a last minute date night. We stumbled upon it after grabbing drinks next door. We had never been Axe throwing and it was absolutely amazing! Ougie made it so fun and kept checking in and really making sure we were doing it correctly. We did 1 hr of throwing and they had so many games it was so much fun. We were the last to leave but thourouly enjoyed ourselves it was nice being spontaneous and trying something new I extremely recommend this place!

This spot makes for the perfect date night. Specials include a couple of hours of axe throwing and they offer other cool games. But let's talk about the food!!!! Don't sleep on their delicious pizza. 10/10 and it was a bonus that the staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. They help you along the way if you're a novice axe thrower like me.

finally went axe throwing for the first time, and I can definitely say my expectations were way more exceeded. For a Thursday night, it was pretty empty so we had the place to ourselves majority of the time which was cool. When we showed up, we were immediately greeted and set up with one of the coaches. he talked us through how everything works and how to throw the axe, show us the different games on the projector -- and we had a blast. I did see one of the guys making pizzas in the kitchen and it did look really delicious but we had already ate so next time I will definitely try their food. Overall though I would highly recommend going - I absolutely loved it and honestly, it was pretty stress relieving lol. I cannot wait to go back!!

This was my first time Axe Throwing , I booked an hour to celebrate my cousin's birthday and it was a fun time. Pretzels and pizzas were good, good selection of drinks (2 drink limit while throwing axes) very clean, staff was friendly and went over the safety rules, techniques on how to throw an axe safely, etc. Definitely a fun time

My daughter and her boyfriend were spending the Memorial Day weekend in San Diego, so I planned with her for our family to spend some time together on Sunday. We first had a delicious early dinner at Del's Hideout, which if you haven't dined at yet, I highly recommend you check it out. After dinner, my daughter had made reservations for all of us to get our Thor God of Thunder on by throwing axes at the Axe Thro Co. This was my first time experiencing this fun place and we all had a blast. Axe Thro is located in the Balboa Avenue area specifically the Convoy District aka Asian Restaurant Row. It is located within a strip mall where it's next to Taste of Hong Kong and you can find Firestone, Hive, Da Nang Corner, Coco Ichibanya, and Cross Street. Parking here can get filled up and the parking spaces are tight. As you enter the facility, you'll immediately notice lanes where there's a large wooden board at the end of the lane. There are pool tables, a wall with some selfie pic opportunities like a large pair of wings and some murals, and they have a small store where you can buy merchandise and axes. They also sell refreshments and snacks. There are high top tables where you can sit to watch axes being thrown down range. When you enter Axe Thro, you're immediately greeted by their friendly staff and a counter to check in. Their price sheet shows that they charge $35/person whether you reserve a single or double lane. My daughter booked two lanes for our party of 8 and according to the sheet, it says 7-8 people get 60 minutes. We were generously given 90 minutes. Prior to becoming Thor or Paul Bunyan, you have to sign a waiver. Before you actually throw your first axe at the target, one of the coaches will go over the rules, techniques, and the type of games you can play. Big ups to the two gentlemen who worked on Sunday during our reservation time of 6pm. Hunter and the other young man provided outstanding customer service and gave coaching tips that allowed us to throw the axes properly. All the targets are displayed via a light projector onto the large wooden board. Make sure to abide by their rules, so pay attention when the coach is going over them. It really was fun and exhilarating throwing sharp axes at targets, zombies, and Christmas ornaments. Our family got our competitive juices going where we competed against each other as families, old vs young whippersnappers, and men vs women. Scoring is controlled by your party through a use of a mouse and keyboard. $35 or $30/person if you're active or a veteran military servicemember was a reasonable price for quality family time. The Axe Thro Co is a fun and entertaining experience where you'll enjoy throwing axes whether you've done it before or you're doing it for the first time. This was my first time and although there were a couple times where I sucked at throwing an axe, the entire outing was a great time had by all of my family.

We came here because it was a friend's birthday, and their girlfriend decided to host a gathering at Axe Thro Co to celebrate! Axe throwing was always something I wanted to try at least once, so when the opportunity rose, I was excited to go! - PARKING - Large parking lot, although it does share the space with several other busy businesses. You're bound to find a parking space, but possibly not right in front of the building! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Since it was a curated group visit, we had two instructors that helped our group of 13. We got a separate area that had 4 lanes, which was nice to keep our group together and away from the rest of the lanes open to the public. They gave great pointers to everyone, and depending on what you needed to work on, offered slight tweaks to help us zone in on the target! Really great engagement and friendly attitude throughout our time here. They also have merch, pool tables, and drinks for sale. - EXPERIENCE - Due to our large group, they had a few games ready for us to play in teams! First to 50, Humans vs Zombies, and Cricket (3 hits in each zone). Everyone seemed to be having a great time, and the competitive nature of team games always riles you up. They also helped us in storing a cake as a surprise, which they also appeared to time perfectly to bring out when our friend left to the bathroom. Its the little things that make an experience that much better. - OVERALL - A very memorable and fun experience! If you haven't tried Axe Throwing yet, Axe Thro Co is a wonderful place to try out!

We walked in with no reservation on a Saturday afternoon. Augee was very helpful and also explained everything to us ( a lot of us our first time throwing). They offer several options for games which is great. They also keep an eye on you and offer advice on your throw. They offered great beers and freshly baked pizzas. It was bright and welcoming inside. I definitely recommend trying this place out !

This review is probably long overdue. I've been throwing axes for 5 years and after moving to San Diego a year and half ago I was happy to find Axe Thro Co. They hosted leagues in the International Axe Throwing Federation (IATF) formate so I'd be able to carry over my stats and be eligible for tournaments that many of my friends back home would be participating in. Jimmy the owner of Axe Thro Co welcome me to their newly starting out league family. What was even better is they were still hosting league (following all covid guidelines) during the pandemic so it help me meet people in the area when a lot of things were shut down. It was so different going from throwing in large leagues of 30+ to small leagues of 8-12 but it's also great to be apart of something that is really starting to grow. Brought back memories of my 1st ever League which I think was around 20 people so not as small but the pandemic played a role into that for sure. It a great place to throw axes in a group or for a date. The staff is friendly and patient. But the league community is where it's out. Everyone is so encouraging and friendly you won't let a better group of people. I went though a very rough pregnancy the everyone was so supportive. When I came back after 2 leagues off due to hospitalized bedrest and c section, my twins were in the NICU and everyone was so invested in making sure I was doing ok and checking in on how the babies were doing. The community at Axe Thro Co is the best. Seriously try a league it's worth the money, or at least come for an hour session. Oh and they also host tournament doesn't matter your skill level they are seriously fun so if you cannot commit to a league try a tournament.

This is a totally different experience from other axe throwing places I've been to. Ian and Jimmy really got involved to make sure that we had fun, stayed safe, and understood axe throwing. Ian was our coach for our 30 minute session and helped us make a bunch of adjustments. It's safe to say we improved significantly and had so much fun that we extended our time. Thanks again for the experience! For $30 a person for 45 minutes, I'll be back again! Appreciate the amazing coaching and support. :') Also they know how to take pictures which is a bonus.

Came here with a friend visiting San Diego. This was my first time doing axe throwing. Our coach Stephanie was amazing! She was funny and friendly and very patient with us getting the grip of throwing the axe. We played games and challenged each other. It's about 30 bucks a person for an hour. Worth an experience! Would come back!! read more

The option to play individual games and mix up your play style worked wonderfully for our group and everyone found the game that worked best for them. We wanted to get some anger out so we said let's do Axe throwing! Turns out it's not an angry activity but it definitely was a lot of fun! We were lucky enough to get Arman as our instructor and he never got annoyed of us, or tired of us. He kept giving us pointers each time and would point out what to focus on to try and make the mark. I can't say enough good things about him! He was very patient with us since it was our first time. We paid $35 for 45 minutes and we did some lessons and practice throws first and he even set us up with some games! All in all, definitely a worthwhile experience and would definitely do again. read more

It was most of my groups first time Axe throwing & we had a great time mainly due to our hostess Shane!! He made the whole experience enjoyable with his sense of humor, patience, & you can tell he loves his job because he really took time to teach us the proper way to throw an axe. The night wouldn't have been the same unless he was there with us, it was full of laughter & competitiveness Would definitely come back & recommend to others! My boyfriend and I decided to go Axe Throwing on a whim and we cannot recommend this place enough. First we were greeted by Ian who is AMAZING, super knowledgeable, helpful , and friendly. Stumbled upon this place thinking it was Que to play some pool but finally realized it turned it's a wonderful surprise...Axe Throwing! The staff here was super friendly and great teachers to axe throwing. Jimmy the owner even helped my friend one on one with her axe throwing. It looks difficult but was actually a lot of fun! They had a special going on but I think the price was worth the experience. Amazing staff. Great price. Cooler experience! read more

It's located at the corner of an outlet with some pretty nice dinner/entertainment businesses! Fair reminder, this is a pretty expensive activity. It's $35 per person for 1 hour. About 4-5 people would share one lane, one axe, and the timer would be set for the entire lane. Sooo definitely really expensive. Honestly, I had fun but this was just so expensive. read more

I went in with my girlfriend just to throw a bit as it's local to us. It was not a good experience. A guy that I guess is the manager was just obnoxious. He came across as quite rude and soured the whole experience. The girl "coaching" had the same appeal as someone reading from a script. My girlfriend just wanted her to go away. We ended up leaving after 30 minutes (but paid for 45). Despite living walking distance, we won't be back. Save your money and go to SoCal Axe. It's way more laid back and you will get a much better customer experience. read more

Wasnt a fan of the employee who constantly kept interrupting to correct the form. He was good and polite but since we are on paid time, it was just taking way from it and having fun. What really pissed me off. He started the timer and THEN proceeded to talk about the rules and to grab our axe so we couldn't do anything until he was done. Like wow. We paid for 45 minutes and we did not get the full 45. He wasted OUR PAID time to talk. Shouldn't that timer start after he was done? Would I recommend? Probably not if they're going to cheat the costumers read more

Where do I start.. let's start with HOW FUN AXE THROWING IS!!! My hubby likes doing adrenaline type of activities & I'm more chill. This was a perfect balance for the both of us. I got to get some aggression out & he got to shoe his manly axe skills (lol). Jimmy, our instructor, was/us super cool & taught us about 5 different techniques of axe throwing. Once we were done w/ our 30min axe throwing, we finished off the activity w/ 30 mins on the pool table. We really enjoyed ourselves & plan to come back on our next trip to SD. read more

We walked into this place late on a Friday night and thought... "why not". Don't regret it. After waivers, we had a spot where we can throw these heavy axes in what look like batting cages. We had Daniel show us several throw and games which made the whole experience so much better. This place seems intimidating but I would say anyone can do it with practice! AMAZING EXPERIENCE! 10/10 recommend! My fiancé and I came here in the middle of the day for an exciting date. It was only $50 total for 30 minutes of axe throwing and 30 minutes of pool for the 2 of us. We are both inexperienced in axe throwing but our coach, Jimmy, helped us feel comfortable and gave us all the knowledge we needed to be able to get the axe to stick in the wood. Once we mastered the basics the taught us some trick throws. Jimmy was super chill and friendly and we will definitely be coming back frequently! read more

I called before heading over asking if they had an age restriction in order to be able to take my siblings. They told me that no one under the age of 12 could go and my sister is 15 so they made me believe I was in the clear. Although they were very friendly through the phone, they were not nice in person. The man with the beard was vey condescending when he told me I had to have a parent sign for my sister. He could've told me over the phone instead of making me drive over there for no reason. He also pretty much embarrassed me in front of his coworker and other customers. Do better. read more

We went as a group they took forever to teach everyone how to throw and then babysit you the entire time. The girl that was taking care of our group was nice and tried to make it fun, but the structure makes that difficult. We have been to other axe throwing places and we were not treated like that. Was not a fun at all. Aside from babysitting there was a guy who must have been the manager and kept giving us unsolicited advice like we were trying to become professional axe throwers. We just wanted to toss some axes and have fun. Save your money and go somewhere else that's cheaper and more fun. Will not be returning and don't recommend. read more

I've never thrown axes before, but I was introduce to Axe Thro as a team building event for my team. I was honestly scared of throwing axes, but when I tried it at Axe Thro Co, they really made me feel comfortable and were very patient until I got my axe near the target. The owner, Jimmy is great to talk to and is always welcoming! And Demi is so fun to talk to and really knows how to make me feel comfortable. Axe Thro is great for team building events as well as hanging out with friends. The area is in Kearny Mesa, so I love eating at Crab Hut or KBBQ then going Axe Throwing when I want to do something fun! I am planning to have a private party for my birthday to celebrate! You should throw an axe! Axes are pleasing objects, even holding them is enjoyable. They scratch the EDC itch that textured metal and minimalist wallets scratch, and within the context of axe throwing, nobody will think it's weird when you mention how nice an axe feels to hold. Throwing an axe and pulling the axe out of the soft Poplar feels, at worst, the way making your last car payment does. Imagine paying off your 2019 Civic Type R every 15 seconds, one payment, yes it will be cash, boom. As a long term hobby, axe throwing is bowling. Skill comes down to a level of mastery where perfection is frequent. I don't know what champion axe throwing entails, but I know that in my short hour of practice and competition I felt like I could grab the hilt of professionalism. For folks whose brains like mastering things, the first tastes of skill come fast. So sure, axe throwing is neat, but is this Axe Thro Co alright? Our instructor, Ian, spent a ton of time helping my partner hit the skill floor. He was attentive, and often quite funny. The space has lots of neat wooden decoration, the bathrooms are clean, you can buy an axe. If you're just here for the photos, the staff know all the best angles, and will help support your photo taking habits. The nice human at the front complimented my orange nails, which is akin to bribery as far as I'm concerned. The area is A+ too, obvs if you're hungry after axeing Convoy is rich in options. This is the option if you're trying to kill time while waiting in line for another Convoy staple, and if you're local maybe the league will offer a longevity to help escape the house read more

Established in 2019.

We acquired a billiard parlor in Kearny Mesa in 2019 and wanted to add Axe Throwing as an additional activity to compliment billiards and all the restaurants in the area. Always in the plan was to add a wood fired pizza oven, now that dream is a reality! Come check out our beautiful wood oven all the way in from Italy! And have a cold beer or seltzer while you are here!

Meet the Business Owner: Jimmy R.

A native of Philadelphia, Jimmy migrated to California to pursue a Neapolitan Wood Fired Pizza business. However, it was during a visit back to the East Coast when he was introduced to Axe Throwing. He saw such potential in the sport, he focused all of his efforts on bringing it back West with him where he teamed up with his Sister and Axe Thro Co was born. Jimmy is excited to be a part of the amazing team bringing this sport to Kearny Mesa.

There are four big pine trees with separate retaining walls around three of them for owners to sit down. With it being so close to the bay, there's often a nice breeze that goes through the park. There's no divide between small dogs and big dogs, so it's best to just keep an eye on your dog, and many owners around here are usually respectful. The street parking immediately adjacent to the park is free, however, it has a limit of 30 minutes, and the parking meter workers are strict on it if they're around. I bring my dog here around lunch time because those who live/ work in the area tend to bring their dogs during their break time and my dog gets his socialization time. They close 8am-11am MWF for maintenance/ cleaning. Currently, both gates are broken so it's not as secure as it should be, and who knows when the city will actually fix it. There're a few agility structures and a water dispenser. The children's park itself looks pretty cool for kids with a lot of structures with slides and swings. There's also another separate area with fixed exercise equipment that looks well- maintained. The water feature in the park is a water feature, not a pool.

My girlfriend and I randomly saw this place after dinner and decided to try axe throwing over karaoke and we had so much fun!!! All I can say :) The staff is super friendly and the owner, Jimmy, is a phenominal coach and very personable. They even having a league, which we are now part of! All in all, incredible experience, would recommend it to anyone wanting to try and learn something new or even just to get out of the house during these COVID times! So much fun!!! read more

This place was awesome!! We showed up as a walk in with about 20 of us and bunch of kids and they killed it with the service. They were patient and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. Only one coach was there so he called in backup and the other coach that showed up (on his day off) was awesome! Had so much fun at Axe Thro Co!! As first timers, the staff really taught us so much in a safe and exciting environment. Rachel was awesome as our scorekeeper/instructor and really guided us through all the different types games. We can't wait to return and perfect our axe throwing and try out the pool tables next time! read more
