Ever since Nick's II sold to new ownership under AZ Diner, we have seen a big change. Sadly, not for the better. A friend and I visited this restaurant on 06/22/2026 at 9:00am for breakfast. The dining area was not busy with just 3-4 tables occupied and a few people at the barstools. I was seated quickly by a hostess and given two menus while waiting for my friend to arrive. Menu: it's about the size of a Sears Catalog (exaggeration but about 8+ pages front and back) and appears to serve food approved by the United Nations (food from different parts of the world). This is the type of menu Gordon Ramsey would go crazy over and shred to pieces. Portions are not larger than before but prices increased considerably! Food: I ordered a Veggie Omelette with Spinach added and Whole Wheat Toast, decaf coffee, and water. My friend ordered an all-meat skillet, sourdough toast, coffee, and water. The omelette/skillet was overcooked and dry. My friend sent back his toast because it was served with a MOLD SPOT on it. Our server was not swayed by the mold and replaced it. No apologies or contact from the managers. By this point, we just didn't want to finish what we ordered and left. Dining room is well lit and spacious. Lots of available seating but could not help that their "Grand Opening" sign has been hanging outside for WEEKS. Servers are slow and never seem to be pleasant (more melancholy). Overheard one server speaking with some guests at a table using profanity. This review was based on my individual experience. This used to be our favorite breakfast spot but clearly is no longer the case. Two things: #1 - They have gluten-free bread as an option for toast. Yea for those people who are gluten intolerant! #2 - I had breakfast at the AZ Diner yesterday and ordered the Philly Cheesesteak Omelette. It was huge and stuffed with meat. We visited AZ Diner this past Friday after talking about trying it for quite awhile. They had a sign on the door saying they were closing early that evening, but we still had plenty of time to order and enjoy our food. Our server was Hannah and she was super sweet. I ordered the chicken caesar wrap with a pancake on the side. I like to try pancakes when I visit diners, hence the side order. The wrap was cool on the inside but the tortilla was warm--a nice combo. Though the wrap was tasty, the pancake was the star of the meal. My mom also ordered a pancake side and agreed that these were stellar. We would definitely return in the future, perhaps for breakfast! read more

There may be some confusion with the name on Yelp/Google and the restaurant sign. I guess their official name is AZ diner but was previously named Nick's diner. A very old school family diner feel. You can tell it is a local favorite. Looked like a lot folks came here after their golf outings. The menu is large and a bit overwhelming. Ultimately we got the Zaira Dream (Denver breakfast sandwich) and the Jaden Super (bagel breakfast sandwich). Both were filling and decent but nothing extraordinary. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. We went a second time during our trip with a larger party and had a similar experience with food and service quality. My fiancé, me and my future father in law are brunch at AZ Diner. They've been here many times but this was my first time. Our food was excellent. I ordered the one egg breakfast skillet with bacon and wheat toast. My future father in law ordered the one egg two pancakes with sausage and my fiancé ordered one egg, potato cake and a piece of French toast. Our beverage was coffee and water. Our waitress was wonderful, warm and friendly. She provided service with a smile. The restaurant is quintessential. Adorned with cute decorations and inviting to everyone who walks through the doors. Went here on a busy Sunday, and sat at the bar. Service took about seven minutes, which was fine for such a busy day. We ordered a burger, and chicken fried steak and eggs. First off let me say that you can't improve on things like eggs, or toast. You just do them right and fast. AZ Diner did both. The food was exactly as you would expect it to be. Very good. As I said, it was crowded and the orders were flying. Tempers between the expediter and the cooks were high, and there were verbal arguments. The ambiance was breakfast and a show! Went to AZ Diner. Also called Nicks Diner 2 and Samantha and Nicks. I got a Patti melt and fries. Also, tried the bisquits and gravy to see if it's better than mine. It was good but not as good as what I make. Patti melt was delicious. Large portions. Did not finish the food there was so much food. My son had the spudomelet which was HUGE. It's a little confusing finding this place because the sign outside says Nick's II. I guess that's the old name . I've been here before for breakfast and I enjoyed it. Now it's time to try the oil you can eat Friday fish fry! This place has a nice diner vibe and is very welcoming. $25.99 is on the high end of what most places are a charging for all you can eat cod but not unreasonable. Especially since this fish is good and the service is above average. I was told the fish is Alaskan cod. It was a little greasy, but not too bad. The tartar sauce, coleslaw and french fries were just mediocre. The servers are great and fish refills were faster than most places. And guess what, I got a free slice of pie when I was finished. We found this amazing diner on Yelp. After looking over the menu I realized this was the place to go. The diner (I use the term loosely) was bright, clean and in spite of being packed was quiet. We were seated quickly and our server was there to take our drink order. The menu is packed with standard diner options along with some great specials. I had to have the open face roast beef with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The gravy was what I expected from a diner, dark brown and tasty. My wife had eggs and potato pancakes. Tasty all around. Tried AZ diner for the first time this morning as recommended from a family member. My husband ordered the Denver Spudomelet & I had the Eggs Benedict. Food was delicious for the most part, but I do wish the home potatoes were more crispy. I didn't like them. Also the waitress was sweet but she forgot my husband's coffee AND his side order of bacon. She also forgot to charge us for the coffee, but I corrected it for good karma's sake and honesty policy. I'd like to come back to try their buckwheat pancakes, hoping the service will be not as "forgetful". They were not busy during the time we visited. read more

A solid diner. GREAT staff, very good food and reasonably priced. We were looking for a traditional breakfast (eggs, bacon, hash browns sort of menu) and found AZ diner on Yelp. There was some confusion on the name but none on the food...isit Nicks or the AZ diner? Still not sure. The food though was exactly what we had hoped for. I had eggs and bacon, excellent. My wife had the hues rancheros and I'd go back for both. They also had a GIANT cinnamon roll...we didn't try it but saw a lot of them being served. AZ Diner is definitely a solid contender in an area peppered with other choices in diner's. The place is spacious with modest decor. We were seated quickly and our drink orders were taken without delay. What impressed me the most was the huge menu with page after page of great looking offerings. I opted for the liver & onions, mashed potatoes & gravy and green beans. The liver was good, but prefer onion strings rather than diced onions. The mashed potatoes were pretty stellar, but unfortunately the green beans seemed steamed and tasted raw. I couldn't eat those at all. My wife had the Gyro and a Greek salad. She thought they were pretty good. With so many great offerings, good service and reasonable prices, I wouldn't hesitate to visit again. read more

Delicious gyro and lemon chicken soup! My gyro has a little too many raw onions and tomatoes, but the tomatoes were finely diced and the onions were thinly sliced. The gyro meat was beautifully grilled and was not compressed meat, but still had the texture of real meat. The pita was warm and wrapped. The soup is comfort to the max. Rice cooked down to a porridge, flavors of chicken accented with the zing of lemon. It is an elevated Chicken Soup for the Soul. They won't seat until your whole party arrives. read more

We had the owner come talk to us and unapologetically told us - they don't season their salmon or any fish they serve. Arrived and was seated at the same exact table i dinner at 4 years ago! Nick's is clean, bright and not nosy. The waitress was friendly and prompt. I ordered the Gilbert's Trail #12 which is the Country Fried Steak, 2 eggs (over easy for me), country potatoes and a pancake. My meal was delicious!!! The CFS was fork tender, eggs good to perfection and the country potatoes were crispy. Pancakes was yummy too. My friend ordered the veggies omelette w bacon and sausage. I came here with some coworkers. The staff was very kind and helpful. Their food is standard diner food with a lot of choices. The inside is wide open with easy access into the booths and tables. I haven't been here in about two years didn't know they had changed the name in the front still says Nick's diner until we went inside. I noticed the bright green shirts. We thought they were wearing Christmas shirts and I look closer has a totally different name. I asked the lady if they change the name, she said yes the shirts are hideous but of course we did not go there for the food. The place is very outdated I had the fish and chips. It was excellent. After 10 years of loyal service, our favorite waitress was fired over not wearing a company shirt. We've been regular customers for over a decade and often overlooked the recent decline in food quality (the bacon especially) because of the excellent service from her and a few others. My husband and I visited this diner while visiting family in the Surprise area. My aunt shared that the restaurant can be extremely busy on the weekends, but good thing we tried it on a Monday morning when it wasn't very busy at all. As we entered the restaurant, I noticed that there must have been a recent change in ownership of the restaurant because the sign and Google list is as 'Nicks Diner II,' but there's a large sign inside that says 'Samantha and Nick's Diner.' Food: I, myself, ordered the "Robin Magnolia" which included steak, eggs, home fries and toast. My husband ordered a Greek skillet. We both ordered a glass of juice to pair with our breakfast- (1) orange juice and (1) apple juice. I thought the home-fries were really bland and could have used some seasoning. My eggs were warm, so I had to eat them fast because who likes cold eggs? Not me. Though we dined in for breakfast, their menu does include breakfast, lunch, dinner and some desserts. Personally, I disliked the menu because it included too many ads as if it were some kind of magazine. Service: We were provided with good service. We were seated immediately, then placed our orders pretty quickly (again, it wasn't busy at all). When our server brought our food she immediately asked if I needed steak sauce and brought it right away when I said 'yes'. Midway through our meal, the server checked on us. Unlike other diners where you would pay your bill up front, you pay at the table via your server. There's even a sign at the front that says "your server is your cashier," so don't forget to pay before you leave your table. Value: Good sized portions for what you pay; however, I don't agree with the price of juice being $3.99 per glass. In my opinion, $8 for two glasses of juice that do not come with refills is pretty pricey. For just the two of us to eat at this diner, it costed us about $50 (including tip)- yikes. Ambiance: clean restaurant. A good amount of seating. Parking lot. It was pretty quiet when we dined there, and since it was December, there was Christmas decor. Location: Right by the AMC theatre on Litchfield. 13765 Litchfield Rd, Surprise, AZ 85379. Overall, pretty good if you're in the area, but not something I'd make a detour for. read more
