Michael helped me with my choices. I selected the Tortilla Soup: Small chunks of slow cooked chicken in a cheese & chicken broth, green chiles, potatoes, sweet corn, carrots & top with mixed cheeses, avocado, and tortilla strips and a side salad. The soup was delicious to the last drop. The side salad is filling and with the soup it was a perfect lunch. The music wasn't loud. We sat by a window with just enough light and not blinded by sun. If I didn't say it in a previous review, this is our favorite Mexican restaurant. We have found nowhere else that compares to the food and hospitality. ... so much so that we returned the next week with our daughters. It's Father's Day and the tables are filled as soon as guests leave. The staff is attentive. The kitchen is BUSY!! They were doing their best with a nonstop crowd. Returned today and unfortunately did not have the best service. Seated near a large group/meeting and our server was delayed in taking our order. He later was more attentive and available after I asked his coworker to assist us. Menu was in poor quality-light and missing print making it difficult to read. Server indicated new menus are on the way. Salsa was good but chips nothing too special. I like that house salad is available as a side vs rice & beans. Salad was fresh, lots of veggies, large portion & tasty dressing. My dining partner & I both had combo platters. I had shredded beef tamale & shredded beef enchilada. Really good & served very hot. We went in for an early dinner on December 23rd with a party of six: my fiancé, his parents, my adult daughter and son, and myself. The food itself was good, and I even took photos of several dishes we ordered. Unfortunately, the service really fell short. We had to ask several times for more chips and salsa, which was surprising given the size of our party. Even more frustrating, our table didn't have any flatware at all. We were confused as to why a larger group that arrived after us had their table fully set while we had to specifically request utensils. That felt unnecessary and frankly ridiculous. The male server also struggled with basic communication. My fiancé and future father-in-law are hard of hearing, and instead of making eye contact or engaging with them, the server stayed hyper-focused on entering everything into his tablet. When my fiancé politely pointed this out, the server appeared irritated and perturbed rather than receptive. On top of that, my fiancé was unhappy with his pork carnitas. We picked this place for our first dinner after our move! Spent the day driving then unloading and were really looking forward to some good food and a margarita! They did NOT disappoint! Our serve, Flor (I believe) was super nice and friendly. The margarita was great! We got a large and shared it-- was going to let hubby drink most of it but about a third of the way through, he was "feeling" it , so I got to finish it off. And the food? Amazing! Tortillas seemed fresh made (not positive), the food had great flavor, including the rice which I oftentimes end up spicing up with salsa-- didn't have to this time! Plus, it was super cute inside. Update March 2026: We had another wonderful experience at Rio Mirage Cafe (Surprise location) on Saturday night, and I want to give a special shout-out to our waiter, Vadel. Our party of eight arrived during a very busy time, and it was clear that Vadel was also managing several other large tables. Despite that, he handled everything with professionalism and efficiency. He took our drink orders promptly, returned quickly to take our food orders, and ensured everything moved along smoothly. The wait time for our meals was very reasonable, especially considering how busy the restaurant was. The restaurant itself has a nice, colorful atmosphere that makes for a lively and enjoyable dining experience. It's a great place to relax and enjoy a meal with family or friends. I've visited this location a few times, and the food has always been consistently delicious. This visit was no exception. We have been here a fair share of times now i feel like and both have been pretty good. But this past visit i had ordered a particular burrito with shrimp and they put carne asada instead. But since i was so insanely hungry i decided to not say anything because i couldn't wait any longer for the correct burrito to come out. Just a little scary for people with food allergies or restrictions. Hypothetically what if i cannot eat red meat and they brought it? Something people need to pay more attention to if they are in this business. Luckily im easy going and love all kinds of food and am not insanely hard to please. The margaritas are very good but the bar can be slow, so if you might want more than one, I highly recommend going for the large size. Chicken fajitas are very good and generous with green and red peppers. One serving is enough to share, maybe with an ala carte taco or a shared app. I can't say that I love the fireman. First time here and it was a great experience! Showed up at 4:30pm and was seated in 5 mins. The waitress (Sophia) was amazing and had great service. The chips were very crispy and good but the house salsa was a little bland. I asked for a hotter salsa and they delivered with a better house habanero salsa which mixed very well with my food. I ordered the speciality burrito with steak and it didn't disappoint. The beans are very tasty as well. My wife ordered flautas and got taquitos which is corn tortilla and flautas are usually flower tortillas. She still enjoyed them and could not stop talking about their sprite fountain drink. First of all bad service. The food was bland and below average. Not "authentic Mexican " as advertised. No menudo on menu. The carnitas lacked seasoning and were overcooked and dry. The tortillas are not house made. They were dry and tough. Nothing was good. The house margarita tasted like it was made in one large batch and watered down. We found a really good Mexican spot near home today after we voted at surprise City Hall. We came in at noon and it wasn't too crowded. We were seated right away. Our waitress, Grace, was very nice and an excellent server. Our drinks were kept filled, and the salsa bowl was kept topped off our entire lunch. She checked on us frequently and made sure everything tasted great. Despite the soda fountain being down when we arrived, she offered us bottled soda drinks and iced tea. Halfway through the meal, she let us know that the machine was up and working, and offered to replace our beverages. We ordered: - Coke - Unsweetened Iced Tea - Complimentary Chips & Salsa (good, fresh chips and very tasty chunky salsa) - Guacamole Dip - Fresh Hass avocado, Mexican spices, jalapenos, diced tomatoes, and onion blended into a tasty, spicy dip mix served with mini tostada chips (delicious, fresh, citrusy and creamy with slight jalapeño kick) - Burrito De Fajitas - A soft flour tortilla filled with your choice of grilled chicken or grilled steak, sauteed with bell pepper & onions topped with red enchilada sauce & cheese. Served with Guacamole & sour cream (Hubs said this was very good! He ate all of it) - Mahi Mahi Tacos - Seasoned to perfection, stuffed with Cilantro-Jicama slaw, topped with radish, and diced avocado, served with black beans, Cilantro Pineapple salsa on the side and Baja sauce (I decided on this after talking to the waitress about it, and she said these were a big hit with many customers. There is a really large piece of mahi-mahi in each soft corn double tortilla taco. The fish is covered with matchstick cut radishes and diced fresh avocado. Pico de gallo and a pineapple salsa are each served on the side of the tacos as well as the Baja sauce that has a nice chipotle spice to it. The black beans are absolutely delicious. A lime is served on the side. The lunch was very good. I will come back and get this again.) There's a lot of table and booth seating in two rooms, there's a bar area with table and bar stool seating, and there is a patio area. We live in Sun City Festival, and have been going to Rio Mirage Cafe in Surprise for nearly six years. It's our go-to restaurant for Mexican food, and I think we've tried every Mexican restaurant within a radius of 20 miles of Surprise. The food is always the best, and the service is consistently great. Their menu is creative and extensive. Not cheap, but reasonable prices with generous portions. If you don't want the standard ho-hum tex-mex, they'll make up whatever you ask for. They'll first bring you complimentary chips and salsa; I find their standard salsa a bit wimpy, so just ask for a little of the hot stuff, and you can mix it in (I'm a kinda salsa snob). But be careful with the chips, as you want to still be hungry for your entree. But we'd never been there for lunch, and yesterday was our first time. They have a very nice selection of $11.25 lunch specials. I had their beef enchilada which comes with rice and beans, or a very nice salad. I had the salad. As with their dinners, their lunch portions are similarly quite generous. My wife had a couple beef tacos ala carte, one of which we took home, and some guac for the chips. Grace was our waitress, and she took good care of us...checking back, and keeping our Coke and iced tea refilled. We normally ask for Mark, but I guess he doesn't work lunchtime. Amazing and fun guy. And if you treat him nicely, he'll sing for you! But don't tell him I told you that. ?? They recently received some sort of award which I've included in this write-up. Our last night here in AZ and we were looking for a good Mexican Restaurant close to where we were staying and we found Rio Mirage Cafe-Surprise. What a great restaurant, nice bar, great Margaritas and the food was absolutely delicious. We had the mahi mahi tacos with pineapple salsa and it did not disappoint. Their guacamole is also very tasty. We finished with the flan, amazing. The staff were very gracious and our server was excellent. I could see why this is a popular destination. Came in they sat us down and forgot about us they sat us down with chips and never came back 25 min later we are looking around and seen one guy who gave us water running around outside serving table and one woman for the whole restaurant. Not once did they ever come back to get our order. We got up and left we let the girl at the counter know and she didn't seem to care one bit Not sure how this place functions with two servers for a huge restaurant with a patio if I could give it zero stars I would. My favorite Mexican spot while I was in Arizona for 2 years and trust me, I've been to A LOT of Mexican spots while I was there. Service was definitely very attentive, friendly, and welcoming! Parking was very easy and plenty of parking. The chips and salsa were super fresh and flavorful and best thing is that it's unlimited! I've been to this restaurant so many times and my favorite dish was definitely their fajitas! Be ready to drop $20+ but it's worth every penny! It came out sizzling hot with tons of meat and shrimp! The asada tasted so fresh and delicious and the shrimps were huge and super flavorful. Their margaritas and cocktails are super delicious and big! I have gone to RioMirage a couple times a month for the last few years. I went with a friend for lunch on Tuesday and got the Lunch Spinach Enchilada which came with beans and rice...I was so disappointed that something in the Enchilada tasted spoiled and old.. I don't know if it was the tortilla - spinach or ? The bad taste ruined the whole meal. I did not send it back because the bad taste in my mouth I loss my appetite.
