Returned today and unfortunately did not have the best service. Seated near a large group/meeting and our server was delayed in taking our order. He later was more attentive and available after I asked his coworker to assist us. Menu was in poor quality-light and missing print making it difficult to read. Server indicated new menus are on the way. Salsa was good but chips nothing too special. I like that house salad is available as a side vs rice & beans. Salad was fresh, lots of veggies, large portion & tasty dressing. My dining partner & I both had combo platters. I had shredded beef tamale & shredded beef enchilada. Really good & served very hot. Partner had cheese enchilada and ground beef taco with rice & beans. He enjoyed his meal also. Festive decor, clean establishment.

We went in for an early dinner on December 23rd with a party of six: my fiancé, his parents, my adult daughter and son, and myself. The food itself was good, and I even took photos of several dishes we ordered. Unfortunately, the service really fell short. We had to ask several times for more chips and salsa, which was surprising given the size of our party. Even more frustrating, our table didn't have any flatware at all. We were confused as to why a larger group that arrived after us had their table fully set while we had to specifically request utensils. That felt unnecessary and frankly ridiculous. The male server also struggled with basic communication. My fiancé and future father-in-law are hard of hearing, and instead of making eye contact or engaging with them, the server stayed hyper-focused on entering everything into his tablet. When my fiancé politely pointed this out, the server appeared irritated and perturbed rather than receptive. On top of that, my fiancé was unhappy with his pork carnitas. Overall, while the food was decent, the service was disappointing enough that we won't be returning to this location. We've had much better service elsewhere.

The ambience was very fun and inviting and felt very authentic. I think that's what made the overall experience really good. The food was good but not great but when you wrap all the experience in together and the service was quite good then it is a place I would likely go back to.

Mexican food is definitely on my top 3. This place delivers authentic cuisine dishes. My head nurse took us to lunch and recommended Rio because she comes here often with her husband. They give you chips and salsa to start off. Service went well and our food came out hot and delicious! I got enchiladas, either with red or green sauce. Since I was told that their chicken pairs well with the green sauce, I went for that. The ambiance took me back to Mexico. Pretty and vibrant interior designs. Flashy music and lively atmosphere.

Celebrated my 74th birthday at Rio Mirage. The drinks, food and service were absolutely amazing! They make the best Strawberry Margaritas in Arizona. Cannot say enough about their Salsa and Chips! Perfect blend of spices; not too hot. We returned with friends and will be coming back again. Highly recommended! -- Lucinda

Update March 2026: We had another wonderful experience at Rio Mirage Cafe (Surprise location) on Saturday night, and I want to give a special shout-out to our waiter, Vadel. Our party of eight arrived during a very busy time, and it was clear that Vadel was also managing several other large tables. Despite that, he handled everything with professionalism and efficiency. He took our drink orders promptly, returned quickly to take our food orders, and ensured everything moved along smoothly. The wait time for our meals was very reasonable, especially considering how busy the restaurant was. The restaurant itself has a nice, colorful atmosphere that makes for a lively and enjoyable dining experience. It's a great place to relax and enjoy a meal with family or friends. I've visited this location a few times, and the food has always been consistently delicious. This visit was no exception. Thank you again to Vadel for the outstanding service--he truly knows how to do it right!

We have been here a fair share of times now i feel like and both have been pretty good. But this past visit i had ordered a particular burrito with shrimp and they put carne asada instead. But since i was so insanely hungry i decided to not say anything because i couldn't wait any longer for the correct burrito to come out. Just a little scary for people with food allergies or restrictions. Hypothetically what if i cannot eat red meat and they brought it? Something people need to pay more attention to if they are in this business. Luckily im easy going and love all kinds of food and am not insanely hard to please. Just wish i could have shrimp that day since my uncles shrimp across from me tasted great too. I'm sure we will be back again since my parents are regulars here.

Visiting my parents for Thanksgiving week and they took me to this restaurant for dinner tonight! Loved the festive decor for the holidays! Service was really good! I loved the chunky salsa and chips! Food was hot and fresh! I was surprised by the Mexican pizza I ordered because I thought it was something else BUT it was huge and an actual pizza! I would definitely recommend this place!

Classic Mexican fare, and delicious. The atmosphere is classic, staff is great. The margaritas are very good but the bar can be slow, so if you might want more than one, I highly recommend going for the large size. Chicken fajitas are very good and generous with green and red peppers. One serving is enough to share, maybe with an ala carte taco or a shared app. I can't say that I love the fireman. To me it's steak and gravy. If you like that go for it, but not my favorite. Overall a great place!

This is a way overdue post but must be said. For almost 4 years I been coming to this location and yes I became a regular. As in all those years I seen 1 person shine, she never asked for a pat on the back or any shout outs. She is always steady and consistent, she shows up to work with a positive attitude and makes you feel welcomed and part of the family. Manager Roxy is who I'm gloating about and if you know her you know she's make you feel like her bestie . Go see Roxy and tell her how much you appreciate her professionalism and smiling face. Shout out Roxy.

Stopped while in town for the weekend. Service was good and friendly. Fresh salsa was flavorful with chips. I got the combo tostada and shredded beef taco. Very good and nice flavor on the shredded beef. Nice environment would recommend.

The tequila list with Fortaleza and the like gave me a lot of hope as well. Alas, it was not to be. Not a hint of spice in anything, from the salsa to the various meals we had. You can tell the quality of the ingredients was good, but the *flavor* was just not there. This began with the salsa, which looked promising but had zero taste. My group had three entrees - beer battered fish tacos, the 3 taco combo (cochinita pibil, quesabirria, and a taco de tinga), and the mixed grill. I also had the La Sandia cocktail, which took forever and tasted... unfortunate. It had an odd salty note and a weirdly thick consistency that reminded me of PediaLyte. Not the best beginning. The overall theme for the meals was the same - everything was acceptable but boring, especially in the flavor we were hoping for. The term we came up with was "inoffensive" - no spice to speak of in anything, despite the items being seasoned and not bland. The mixed grill is huge and the grilled cheese included is a fun addition, and the ingredients in the tacos tasted high-quality (lots of raves about the tortillas) but there was no kick to anything. Perhaps we needed to adjust expectations, but when I come to a Mexican place - even a chain - I expect a little more, you know? Service was very slow during an admittedly slow time of day and it took a long time to receive anything besides chips, but everything was fresh when it arrived. Portion sizes were perfectly acceptable for the price. Our visit was not memorable and I don't expect to be back, but we were glad to give it a try.

But since the change in ownership, the quality, service, and value have completely fallen off a cliff. Tonight was the absolute last straw. We always call ahead to ask if our favorite server, Espy, is working, because the customer service otherwise has become atrocious. Espy is fantastic and the only reason we still try to come here. Tonight, we called and asked if Espy was working, and the person on the phone said yes. We asked if she'd be there until close, and the manager, Jeff, responded with, "I hope not." We pulled up to the restaurant less than five minutes later and asked for her section, only for Jeff to tell us he had already cut her for the night, knowing full well we had just called and were coming specifically for her. Jeff the manager was extremely rude, unprofessional, and dismissive. We walked right out and took our business elsewhere tonight, and we feel terrible for Espy because she is genuinely amazing and deserves better. This interaction is just the final nail in the coffin after watching this restaurant go downhill: Zero Customer Support: We actually reached out directly through the customer service link on the Macayo's website back in July to share these exact concerns and issues, hoping someone cared. They never even acknowledged or responded to our email. Shrinkflation & Portions: Portion sizes have drastically shrunk. Far less meat in the burritos, barely any beans and rice, and they nickel-and-dime you over chips and salsa. Stingy Takeout Policy: On multiple takeout orders, they hand you a huge bag of chips with a tiny 4-oz cup of salsa and claim "new management policy" prevents them from giving any more. Gutted Deals: They eliminated the loyalty points program, cut kids' meal deals from two per adult to one, scrapped the summer "Kids Eat Free" daily deal, and neutered Happy Hour. Refusing Advertised Coupons: Just last month, we brought a party of 14 people and management refused to honor the active 20% off Mi Coupon that is still advertised on their own website and app. Between Jeff's atrocious management, total lack of response from corporate, the drop in food quality, and the complete elimination of customer appreciation, there is zero reason left for us to support Macayo's. After 36 years, our family and our wallets are officially done.
