I have a confession to make: I've never had a shwarma that I would describe as "bad." Middle Eastern food is my addiction and my weakness, crack, if you will. No addict will ever complain about a fix so you should probably take everything I say with the same grain of salt that you would take with a crack head. That said, The hommous is a little different from most places. It's slightly grainy in a pleasant way, and it's got quite a bit of cumin, which gives it a slightly darker color and a load of deliciousness. It's a tiny, tiny bit cheaper than most Shwarma places. I usually get the Azama combo, which gives you baba, tabouli, hommous and Shwarma, but everything I've had here is good. read more

Been hearing good things about this place, so i decided to cheat on The Shawarma King in Coolidge Corner and check this place out. Drove by on my way to work a few minutes after 11:00am, went in an ordered a fish kabob rollup - sounded great! grilled salmon with peppers, onions, pickles and tahini sauce. He said it would be a minute, so took a 10 min walk. Came back, they were still working... hmmm. Finally the order comes up and they charge me over $9.... I said "isn't it $6.45?" They had made me the dinner, not the rollup. Well, they only charged me the $6.45 and they gave me a free soda cause I was the first customer of the day! Great service. The food was very good. Yum Yum As far as Allston - best falafel, hands down. And it definitely ranks city wide. These guys have all kinds of awards - Boston Phoenix etc... What I love is that they super-deep-fry their falafel balls making them really crunchy on the outside and smooth soft on the inside - really tasty. They don't short change you here. Look no further for, by far, the best middle eastern food in the area. We ordered the beef and lamb shwarma plate... it was deliciously spectacular. HUGE portion for the money and muy tasty: An incredible value for just under 7 dollars. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is because it is a little too cramped inside (it was crowded with 7 people in there, so I can't image what a 2AM weekend crowd would be like). The kitchen side is unnecessarily large and they could easily shove a few tables back there. Also, when we were there (Saturday afternoon) we hit a rush + there was only one guy behind the counter taking the orders, making the food, and manning the phone/register... so things were a little slow. But he was uber-cool, and the food was definitely worth the 10 minute wait. If you're on/near Harvard Ave and need late night munchies this place is far and away the place to go... Ordered for the first time. I was feeling hummus that night. Hummus - Very good. Could be packaged a bit better so it does not make the foam container soggy and leak out the top. Pita - Meh. Either toasted or stale. I could not really tell. I would have been happy with a nice thick warm pita. No dice. Veg - No complaints. Chopped tomato/cucumber and onion. I recently stopped in Azama for dinner after meaning to check it out since it first opened. Between reading other reviews and speaking to my roommate who is familiar with this kind of food, I was expecting an awesome meal. I was a little disappointed. I ordered the Azama combo to go. I wanted to try a little bit of everything. The portions were decently sized and everything smelled great. After my first bite I was really let down. The items that should have been warmed up, were not. Everything was ice cold. Almost like it had been set up in the take out box and sitting over ice somewhere waiting to be topped off and bagged. Then I realized all the people ahead of me had not received their food yet. Their food was being prepped fresh and hot and I felt like I just picked up a to go order from a supermarket. The flavors were spot on though. If things were warmed up/more fresh I would definitely add a star or two. I am hoping to get back there again soon and eat there to see if the service differs. read more

First and very last time here. I came here because it is halal but everything was way below standards. The kebab was so old and hard and could not be consumable. The bread seemed old. Vegetarian or Meat eater, this place will satisfy. Their meat is Kosher (clean and holy) and their felafel is crispy. They press all their roll-ups so they're crunchy outside and moist flavorful inside. I don't let a drip fall while I'm eating because it's all sooo good. I get the felafel roll up with PICKLES and HOT SAUCE ( I didn't know how good a felafel could be till I tried it with thinly sliced pickles) or the chicken kabob. Tender, fresh, dazzling flavors. Ordered delivery for the first time this weekend and was pleasantly surprised. Long ago and far away, I helped a friend with his new Lebanese restaurant after he was buried in business when a Cheap Eats review gave him the big thumbs up. (hint, started in Arlington, now in Cambridge in a shmancy place) We ordered a Chicken Shwarma combo plate, a vegetarian combo plate and an Azama rollup for lunch the next day. The plate were identical, except that instead of 4 excellent Falafels, obviously made there, the Chicken Shwarma had 2 and a good serving of the chicken. I've seen Chicken Shwarma on the skewer, and it's a pressed meat affair, pieces of chicken pressed into the form of the rotisserie "log" that is shaved or sliced from. This looked liked it had been flaked off the log. I can't put it any other way, BUT, it was moist and had a nice flavor to it, not overwhelming, but smoky and interesting. Each plate included incredibly fresh moist pita cut into wedges and wrapped in waxy paper. Very traditional. Also, each included a small container of Tahini, which is actually unnecessary, and in the not very tightly closing foam box was a very generous serving of very tasty hummus, baba ganoush, tabouleh and a chop salad, sort of lebanese or egyptian style, with cucumbers as the base ingredient, and mildly vinegary dressing. The Tabouleh and Chop Salad was very fresh. This was a dinnertime order, so if they prepped ahead, it wasn't far ahead. There was tons of fresh parsley in the tabouleh and everything was crisp in both salads. Very very nice. Only one thing: the tabouleh was light on the bulger wheat. The non-Israeli versions I've had over the years have all had more bulgur wheat (kasha is sometimes used, but never use cracked wheat) in them. Many recipes list the bulgur as the first ingredient. However, I love parsley, so it was "wrong" but tasty! The Hummus is excellent. It has flavor. It has a little bite and it's rich without using too much tahini (sesame). It also has a proper traditional nice blop of light olive oil in the middle of it! Delicious but not for everyone. Be sure to ask for the oil to be excluded if you're that worried about calories and save yourself a tablespoon of flavor. The baba ganoush is quite good. It actually tastes of aubergine or eggplant and it has a bit of heat to it! I think I tasted a tiny amount of Shug added. If you don't know that word, which you probably don't, you'll really flip if you ever hear it. It sounds much the same in Arabic and Hebrew, sort of "Sh-(ch)hoog(k)" is the best I can do here. Traditionally, it's a fermented red pepper flake oil paste, somewhat like Sriracha on acid. I cannot describe how strong or delicious it is, and a miniscule amount is all it takes. Both the Baba and the Hummus have ONE problem: they are overly smooth. Yeah, yeah, I know... this is America, we like smooth condiments... well, hummus is suppose to have a bit of granularity to it from the chickpeas and the sesame, not gritty but textural, and baba is usually hand mashed, so there are "lumps" in it. You know what I mean if you've had any other mashed eggplant like Baigan Bharta (Indian), etc. Minor issue. Their signature rollup was good. It had pretty much everything that's in the Veggie Combo Plate in a big ol fresh and expertly rolled Pita, with the addition of a good thread of Shug... a VERY nice surprise! There is an interloper, Jalapeno pepper in this rollup, and a bit of potato... all in all, very satisfying hot rollup (hot when it arrived, so we nuked the halves part way and then toaster ovened them to keep the pita from disintegrating). Overall, very nice, and believe it or not, the combo plate is a filling meal, since hummus and baba are not low fat foods, and there is falafel and/or meat along with plenty of green stuff. Healthy fast and tasty, fresh, and easy. So, it's also a good deal. They give you a decent sized meal fast for about $6-7 vegetarian, and $7-10 with meats, each. And OH! Get a Bassma for dessert. It's not heavy and dripping with honey like so many desserts from that part of the world... nice sweet after the meal. For a buck and a half, you can trust me on this one. The delivery guy was very friendly and right on time. I think he was an Azama employee. One minus, a point to the owner there: ESPECIALLY for first time delivery, bring a menu. What a wasted opportunity. Nothing reminds people when they are ready to dial for something, anything, like a menu sitting right there. If I had to pick a meal to eat for the rest of my life, it would probably be taboule, hummus and pita from Azama grill. So good! Their kabobs run a little too heavy on the charcoal for my liking and the falafel were also a bit on the overdone side in my opinion, but I know some folks like it that way. Okay, let me start off by admitting something. It has been more than once that I have found myself walking out of a bar after having a, um... how can I put this... really good time and craving something delicious in my stomach that does not involve any hops whatsoever. This is where Azama Grill really steps to the plate. Quickly becoming a staple in late night Allston, Azama offers a healthy and delicious alternative of late night food that is different than a typical, greasy pizza that might make your stomach turn after a few too many beers. The middle eastern cuisine is always top notch and it serves as one of the best places for both meat eaters and vegetarians alike (an important thing in an eclectic place like Boston!). This is not to say that Azama is only a good option as a late night stomach filler. I find myself stopping in for lunch, dinner, and even just a snack any time I am nearby. Sometimes it is actually nicer to go in during non-rush hour, as the only real complaint anyone can have about Azama is that during peak hours it can get very crowded, busy, and sometimes hectic. Such is a problem with a great place, I guess! Even if you are skeptical about trying new foods, the folks who work there are always helpful in giving you suggestions as to what you might enjoy, what you may not like, and will make all of your food to order. If you are looking for an alternative to those chicken wings that you have had a thousand times before, try Azama. You won't regret it! read more

I am very particular about taste. (Mum and grand-mum's cooking has spoilt me for posterity ). Shawerma king's food was not too good , the meat had a strong burnt flavor that put me off. So I didnt bother to go there again. I wanted to try Azama grill becoz it had managed to get such great ratings from fellow yelpers. We ordered Beef, Lamb Shawarma and Lamb Kabob plate. For less than 20$ , the quantity we ( two people) got was enough for our dinner and lunch ( next day ). And it passed my taste test with FLYING colors. Its open until 3 AM !!! Now you know where to pig out on weekends after a late night movie ?? I also got a meat Pie. But i felt the dough was slightly sour and ground meat less flavorful. But maybe that's the recipe for the pie ? All in all , I hope we all get the same great taste/quality each time we visit the place. read more

I love this hole in the wall. I have tried their falafel rollups, chicken shawarma and for less than $6, you cannot complain. The food is awesome and the staff (especially Manuel) is very friendly. We pick up wraps for lunch all the time. All of my colleagues who I introduced this place to, love it. Their platters are also great, Excellent Middle Eastern food. Cons - It is really a hole in the wall - there is not much room for a group to sit. There are probably 6 chairs in all and hence a very tight fit. read more

I went here to eat for lunch and I must say the food was good. The price was good. They messed our order up however overall I enjoyed the experience. One thing that keeps this place from going to five stars is that we waited for our food for a long time. This place has some processing issues however once they are worked out I think they will do better. Overall the experience was good and the value was great. Overall, I feel this place has great attributes, and these attributes make the place seem better than the food actually is. They have a great cucumber salad - which is more like a tzatziki than anything else. However, its delicious. I have tried many of their wraps, and I have to say they are good - but nothing special really. Now, when you stumble into this place at 2:30 AM, pretty much anything will taste like the best food in the universe. The late hours, and the delivery make this place appealing. For a good Shawarma or other kind of wrap, I would go down the street to Garlic N' Lemons (a little bit past Blanchards). They have delicious sides as well, and the food comes out quicker, and is tastier. At Azama, the chicken wrap I had last Sunday was really lacking meat. It was stuffed with vegetables, but I could barely taste the chicken. In the end - if your hungry after a rough nights of drinking, give Azama a try. If its lunch time though, take the time to walk down the street and get a better bang for your buck. read more

Hmm. Yeah, mixed bag. Pros: 1. By Foodler, around 8:30-9pm, WICKED FAST! 2. I 'only' ordered the Baba Ganoush plate, which is Baba+salad+pita-- and I got a BIG portion of baba ganoush. Like... the "main entree" portion in the styrofoam delivery carrier was full. Definitely got my money's worth. 3. The baba ganoush was tasty-- probably 4/5 stars. I'm sort of a b.g snob. (It's been my stress-craving as of late-- I've tried it from everywhere that sells it around here.) It was a little smoky, but I would have liked MORE smokiness/flavor from the eggplant. You could taste the tahini a little too much. Cons: 1. Pita HAS to come shipped in bags. It's the big, flat, tortilla looking ones. It's tough and flavorless-- maybe I'm spoiled by the pillow-y, soft, almost-sourdough stuff at other places (looking at you, Boston Kabob Co). If this is more authentic pita with respect to Egyptian cuisine, I'll stand corrected and not discredit them for it. But it's TOUGH. 2. The cucumber/onion/tomato salad that came with my dish, while generously portioned, was bland. I dumped tahini on it, and wished I'd thought to ask for some of that hot sauce everyone else raved about. It could have benefited from more salt, or herbs, or-- something. Altogether, since I'm pretty hard-pressed to turn down Mediterranean food, I'd order from here again. But bad pita can really be a day ruiner for "scoopable" foods like baba, so I might stick with the shawarma or falafel. read more

Definitely my go-to carry-out restaurant in Boston. We're regulars. The guys know its us when they hear "grape leave roll-up" and "extra garlic sauce" in the same order. We also like to get the lamb kibby roll-up, the hummus, the azama fries, the chicken roll up, and the vegitarian azama roll-up. Its nice to go to if you're out late in Allston, or if you're close enough to call in and pick up 10-15 min later. Their spice blend is superb. The spices are what sets this place above the competition. We ask for a side dish of their spice blend, and cook with it at home. I don't know how they make it so much better than other Mediterranean places, but it is. Their sensitivity to flavor has spoiled me, I can't eat at Garlic n Lemons anymore. This restaurant is a big embarasment to Mediterranean foods. It's is shameful for what they sell. The food is unbelievably the lowest quality I have ever seen/had. No taste, undercooked/burnt. Zero percent adherence to food safety, cleanliness or hygine requirements/guidelines. There is no passion show in the food from the menu. Except for the unabashedly sloppy job. Poor customer service. Writing another review for Azama because I think I forgot to mention how much food you get with a dinner. I really should have taken half of it home! I got the kafta dinner, and it was once again delicious. Actually, if possible, I think it was even better than the last time I had it. Maybe it is that extra happiness the owner has because of the revolution in his homeland Egypt, that the Kafta is even better than before. I also tried a fork full of the vegan eggplant which was very yummy. I said it before, I am Lebanese and it is hard to find authentic middle eastern food, but here it is at Azama. read more

I came here on a weekday afternoon. It was completely empty and there were several parking spots available (street parking). Fair warning, this is located on a very busy street. I ordered a lamb roll up to go, and it took about 15 minutes. Most items are $8-$10 so prices are about average. The roll up I got was...not the best. The meat was hard and some pieces were burnt.
