Stopped by here the day after Chinese New Year, looking to eat something clean, traditional and comforting and this spot hit all of those boxes :). We got the Japanese breakfast and the bento box and each were equally delicious (both $19). I personally preferred the fish from the Bento as it was a little more meaty and had less bones but the mackerel was super tasty as well with a lot of umami. We waited 20 min for a table but it went by fairly fast as there is a coffee shop right next door where you can order yourself a drink and sit inside if you'd like. Will definitely be coming back! I know they do have special menu events every once in a while, I wanted to stop by late last year for one of them but wasn't able to make it. Hoping to try the next time around. Great dinner service from Azay! Restaurant is quite small but luckily we got seated right away. We didn't make reservations and lucked out, but I'd highly recommend if you do. Service was very pleasant. Me and my bf came during dinner and it was a preset menu. It was a three course menu with a salad to start, your main protein, and dessert to finish. In between the starter and proteins were they brought a bruchetta on the house. In the beginning they brought out oysters, but I couldn't have it due to my shellfish allergy. Such a wonderful gem tucked away in Little Tokyo! Came here with two friends and we all got the Japanese breakfast, which was incredible. This was easily the most memorable meal during my recent trip to LA. Saw this place as we were walking around Little Tokyo and found the Japanese-French concept interesting. Ordered the Nagoya Hitsumabushi and the Beef Bourguignon. A friend and I made the trip for Saturday breakfast but they were closed. I made a comment about it on their Instagram page then returned by myself nearly two weeks later for dinner. I was recognized(!), offered apologies, and was told about a death in the family. I had no hard feelings about the closure as things happen and thus I returned but I appreciated the explanation. There are a few dinner options but the focus is a prix fixe meal. Everything was delicious and perfect for an elegant, three-course meal when you're willing to pay a bit more but don't want to break the bank. The prix fixe menu essentially changes weekly. This place is a gem! We love the vibe, love how the art on walls is uniquely related to the history and development of the restaurant. Philip is a delight, it meant so much to us that he shared the history of this family restaurant and what inspires its menu. From the first bite, everything was delicious. Their food is like an orchestra, with highlights and depth. Every detail of the meal was intentional. We started with a couple of appetizers: Crab and uni milk toast, and Sunchokes w/ dengaku miso. The crab and uni milk toast was rich and creamy on top with a crisp crunch of toasted artisan baguette below. Sunchokes were perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The miso glaze added a savory highlight. We had Chilean sea bass and Jidori shio koji chicken. Both were excellent and cooked to the perfect doneness. The chicken thigh had passion fruit seeds which added a sweet surprise to balance the savory honey nut squash. The sea bass, which was one of their signature dishes, is served in a hand-painted dish reminiscent of a traditional Japanese kaiseki meal. It was cooked to tender and delicious perfection. Desserts were equally delicious and thoughtfully prepared. We had a soy milk panna cotta (big thanks from lactose-intolerant Asian) which was rich and creamy and topped with a pear granita, yum! The apple tarte had a traditional French crust, flaky and delicious. Service is excellent. We noticed they pulled extra staff out when serving our entrees so everyone at our table received their meals at the same time. I called to see if they were able to accommodate a group of 8 as a walk in and they were able to let us get seated as long we we were out within an hour so the next group could be seated. It is a very small space indoors, but they have tables outdoors. There is a restroom for customers to use, and you can park on the street. Now, onto the food. Everything was good, but it was maybe too healthy for our liking. We left out wanting more things to eat, so we wandered around to find something else. I appreciated the fact that they were able to accommodate our group on short notice, and we were well prepared to leave within an hour. It was a bit annoying that the staff kept walking by us and looking at our table, so we just felt that much more pressured. They also didn't refill our waters until the end when they cleared our table. I came here on a Sunday and it wasn't busy, but it is located near little Tokyo so parking was a bit difficult. I'd recommend parking a bit further and just walking. They have outdoor seating which is nice. The inside is small, it has an open kitchen which allows you to watch the chefs at work. Overall, the ambiance is intimate and relaxed. The server recommended that I I try the daily bento. It comes with freshly cooked salmon, tsukemono (vegetables), soba noodles, and a side of white rice and miso soup. The bento here is pitch perfect. For $20 you get a protein (our buta kakuni pork was SUPREME), abundant amount of veggies (salad and cooked vegetables), rice, and a miso soup. Our eel bowl was also very good (Nagoya hitsumabushi). The eel was softer than what I'm used to, very rich, and the sauce just the right amount of sweet. I'm not a fan of ochazuke and prefer it without the tea, but it can be eaten with the tea if you'd like (the gentleman that brought our food suggested eating it without the tea for half the portion and finish up with the tea). We also had a duck confit and it was good, but wasn't as good as the rest of the meal. we'd like to come another time to try out their other bentos. Everything looked so good! Let me start by saying we visited this place very spontaneously after eating Swedish Pizza and still feeling hungry. The restaurant is small with only enough space for about 22 people but has outside seating as well. I grew up attending the temple in little Tokyo and this spot is relatively new. Their menu changes frequently and items include local farms and vendors so whatever I review here will likely not matter! We ordered the Black Cod, asparagus, Gohan, and shrimp app. The miso black cod was THE best I've ever had. Fresh and perfectly cooked. The asparagus was well seasoned and cooked with the perfect snap. The gohaan (white rice) was nowhere near as good as my mom's. The shrimp was really good and keep in mind I'm saying that as someone who doesn't like shrimp. I do have to say the reason for only 4 stars was the service. They're definitely still trying to figure out their menu and the waiter dip their thumb into one of our dishes, wiped on the side of our table and then refuse to take responsibility for it and replace the dish without arguing. We also received all of our food items out of order and long after tables who arrived after us. It was really difficult to get staff attention. We had to ask for water multiple times and for the check. I'm sure things will improve over time and to be honest the food was well worth the not so great service in my opinion. read more

Came for lunch and dinner, so I'm combining the two reviews. Lunch first! FLAVOR (4/5): *LUNCH* 1. NAGOYA HITSUMABUSHI: I was contemplating between this and the Japanese breakfast and I'm glad I picked this! The eel was super yummy, and the portion size was just right. *DINNER* 1. HOUSEMADE PORK RILLETTES AND PATE: This was a good starter, but didn't really blow me away. The texture of the pate was interesting and a little bit on the harder side - I personally preferred the pork rillette. I also wish there was a little bit more bread. 2. SOFT SHELL CRAB: The crab was good flavor wise, but I wish it was a little bit crispier. It was super juicy inside, but the downside to that is that it loses some of its crispiness and the texture of the crab shell comes through a little bit more. 3. MISO BLACK COD: Traditional Japanese cuisine tends to be a little bit on the lighter side, with a greater emphasis on the cook of the meat and the combination of the side dishes. The miso black cod really encapsulates this idea and the fish practically melts in your mouth. If anything, I wish the sauce was more prominent but that's just a personal preference. 4. ROASTED DUCK BREAST A L'ORANGE: The highlight of the night. Cooked beautifully, and the burst of citrus flavor complemented the dish well. 5. What a cute and yummy spot! This place in Little Tokyo definitely transported me back into my japan trip last year. Knowing how popular this place is, we thought we'd wait awhile (esp on a sunday around noon) but we got seated almost right away! The staff were sweet and quick. I was suppose to go on vacation to Japan. But then life happened. To paraphrase Steinbeck who borrowed from Burns (not of Simpson's fame) "The best laid plan of mice and [humans] often go astray." So I waited in line before they opened. I am old enough, and experienced enough to know that sometimes to get a table in a popping place this is what needs to be done. I got a table. The place did not take long to get packed. That is always a sign of a place that has positive promise. As I said above, I was committed to experience Japanese culture so I ate their "Japanese Breakfast." Which I assumed to be a traditional Japanese breakfast. I will admit that I took their word for it. I do not want to assume that the Japanese breakfast that they offered me is truly a dominant state of Modern Japan. But for my vacation, I allowed myself to believe it was. I never had fish for breakfast. Well maybe I have-- cause of lox on bagels. I should say, I never had friend fish. I will say that I did not enjoy their Japanese breakfast but it was good food. I need to explain that I was not accustomed to the flavors of their Japanese fare, I did not develop the taste for it, but I understood how it was delicious food, I just did not have the experience to enjoy it. I would 1000% go back to taste some of the fare that I am more accustomed too. The place is small. The place is kind. One of the servers took the time to explain to me what I had eaten. For example, there were these things that looked like radishes- they were fish cakes. There was cold egg in my plate. It was made with fish broth, I think. Their miso soup was grand. A friend recommended this place for brunch and made it very clear that this was one of their favorite spots in LA. They didn't want to hype it too much just in case it didn't meet expectations, but honestly they didn't hype it enough. The service was amazing and their complementary barley tea came warm and brewed to perfection. Kakuni omurice 4.5/5: I'm not going to lie I was a bit disappointed at first cause I thought they would do the table side egg slit, but it was so good I didn't mind too much. The eggs were buttery and soft, one of the best eggs I've had. I especially loved the green peas in the bed of rice underneath the eggs. I don't know how they made it so silky. Crab curry 4/5: personally I'm not a fan of curry but this was a crowd pleaser. It's good to try at least once, but I don't think I would get it again considering their other options are amazing. Unagi bowl 10/10: by far the best unagi I've ever had in my entire life and I love unagi. It's a melt in your mouth experience. The tea broth paired with the unagi was amazing, it didn't take away at all, in fact the flavors really complemented the dish. Daily bento 4.5/5: a very satisfying bento with a lot of variety.
