Real Japanese breakfast is getting harder to find on a weekday. I knew from the website that it is on the menu every day they are open. I stood outside by their sign saying wait there to be seated. The door was opened by a friendly smiling young lady waitperson and quickly seated. This isn't a fancy place and not too many tables inside but many family restaurants in Japan are very similar. Minimalistic but relaxing. I ordered chili cucumbers appetizer, Japanese breakfast with saba and hot sencha. The young lady brought out the sencha and cucumbers. What was cool was the little dish provided for the teabag. A gentleman brought out the tray with the Japanese breakfast. Great presentation and the mix of vegetables, orange slice and tamago, rice, miso soup and saba was delicious. When I was done eating I was no longer hungry. Not stuffed; just sated. Our waitress was really kind and patient with us while giving us a rundown of the menu. Our waitress also frequently refilled our water. The food also came out at a reasonable pace. The restaurant itself is pretty small. They have some outdoor as well as in door seating. It is located in Little Tokyo. Definitely a spot I recommend checking out. Came here on a Saturday evening, and the experience was lovely! For dinner, they have a 3 course set menu to order from, and they were very accommodating for allergies. The food quality was very fresh, balanced, and not heavy at all. I really liked their use of various sauces, like how the shiso pesto complimented their tomato & yellow peach salad, and the miso cabbage purée being flavorful and not salty as all with the jidori chicken. For $65 per person, it's actually of good value considering the quality presented here. Service was very nice here and they were quick to respond to requests. My only complaint was that initially when coming in, the restaurant smelled a little stinky to me, but I think the general area of Little Tokyo can sometimes smell like sewage to me sadly. 05/10/2024 I am here for what they call, a four-top. It was a pop-up restaurant before for Chef Akira. Now it's a permanent fixture here in Little Tokyo. Just steps away from City Hall. This is one of those things where you ask, what are you doing for dinner? I joined a few friends and we practically ordered the left side of the menu. We have been talking about coming here for breakfast after such a great meal for dinner. Here is what we shared, Roasted Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast Salad, Yasutomi Farms Mizuna and Komatsuna Soba Salad with Fujiya Dressing, Scottish Salmon Tartare with capers, conicione, chives. I really liked the Pan Seared Hokkaido Scallops with Truffle Green Pea Puree and the Miso Black Cod. Pan Roasted Rack of Lamb with Brussels Sprouts, Herbed Demi where we ate these like meat lollipops. New Zealand Tai Snapper was a fresh tasting dish. The tea was so good but wait until you see the dessert we ordered. The Creme Brûlée with black sesame and matcha, the mochi and red bean with this salty dried anchiove was interesting. You have to get the most flakiest pastry which we selected the pear over the apple. Try to cut this thing without the flakes going everywhere into 4 even pieces. The service was great and very thoughtful. Wish I remembered names but definitely, do not play with the lights if you are sitting at the table near the switches. Came with a party of 7 to this hidden gem on a Saturday morning for breakfast and had a wonderful experience! I would recommend making reservations as the shop is quite small. There is street parking but it is $4/hr so I would recommend parking at the Aiso parking structure which is a block away and only $1 for the first hour. The food here is mostly Japanese but there are items that are French and some are a fusion. I tried their Japanese breakfast and substituted the mackerel with their miso black cod for an additional $9 and it was so good! The cod was so soft, flaky, and flavorful. I enjoyed the small dishes that came with the breakfast set and it was a pretty filling meal. I also tried their Hayashi Bourguignon which is a Japanese French dish that comes with beef short rib and mushrooms in a thick savory sauce that tasted really good over the rice. Overall i enjoyed this quaint restaurant and would definitely recommend trying them out. They also have a dinner menu which I would want to try next time. read more

Second time here for brunch and it was just as delicious! I got the daily bento with miso black cod and we also got the hiyayakko and chawanmushi to share. The pickled veggies that came with the bento paired nicely with the fish; the only downside was that the miso soup was lukewarm. Was in Little Tokyo for an event and saw this place finally reopened, so I dropped by to give it a try. It was pretty busy, but I was able to be seated on one of their little tables outside. The decor and vibe seemed to be modern but homely, and the staff was very welcoming and friendly, making a very comfortable place to be. I ordered the Nagoya Hitsumabushi and a miso brown butter chocolate chip cookie. The eel was perfectly cooked and delightfully soft and tender, and the sauce was deep in sweet and savoriness. after eating about half of the bowl, I added the green onions and wasabi and poured in some of the hojicha broth, and that drastically transformed the dish into a delightful stew; the hojicha broth was light but savory, and also took on some of the sweet savoriness of the sauce and blended it perfectly with the rice, complimented greatly by the brightness of the green onion and the subtle bite of the wasabi. I was already greatly impressed by the hitsumabushi, but the cookie was also incredible. It was soft, warm, and fresh, and it had so much depth to the flavor between the richness of the brown butter, the light savoriness of the miso, and the melty goodness of the chocolate, all emphasized by just the right amount of salt sprinkled over it. Wonderfully decadent, and definitely one of the best cookies I've had. Wonderful place, definitely worth the hype and strongly recommend checking it out! read more

They do get popular over the weekends so reservation recommended since the restaurant is not big. However you can walk in and get added to the list if you weren't able to reserve. I was on a walk with my baby and saw that there happened to be open tables as I was walking by, which I know is rare, so I asked if I would be able to snag a spot and was quite excited when the host seated me right away! The place is pretty small and gets packed. They take reservations and usually theres a line of people waiting. Not exactly a kid friendly place, but I made do lol. After posting my review, the restaurant reached out to follow up, which I really appreciate -- it's clear they care about the guest experience and take feedback seriously. I respect that, and because of their response, I'm open to giving Azay another try in the future. I've dined at Azay before and had a wonderful experience, but sadly, it seems to have changed -- from a fine, delicate Japanese restaurant into something closer to a mid-tier fusion concept, and not in a good way. The evening began with confusion around our reservation. We had booked indoor dining and were looking forward to the regular menu, but when we arrived, we were told indoor seating wasn't available. Then, after being seated, we overheard staff telling other tables that the regular menu wasn't available either -- something we were never informed of. Multiple groups around us were clearly caught off guard. The staff gave different explanations to each table and claimed they had called ahead, but it seemed no one had actually received a call. Service was disorganized. Our table was brought the wrong dishes four separate times, making it clear that the kitchen and front-of-house staff weren't aligned. The whole evening felt like it was being run by a ragtag crew. The food didn't help: * The citrus salad tasted like something tossed together at home in two minutes. * The uni "toast" lacked freshness and substance -- more of a canapé than a dish worth highlighting. * The chocolate mousse was served warm. To top it off, much of the food was served on disposable paper plates -- which felt absurd at this price point. It cheapened the entire experience. read more

A super cute cafe/restaurant to stop by for a traditional japanese meal. I came here in the morning around 11 and luckily did not have to wait. The place is small with around 8-10 tables but I saw them preparing many meals for pick up. The staff greeted me immediately and gave me recommendations. The whole restaurant feels very homey and the staff are very welcoming. I was tempted to order the japanese breakfast as I saw it was popular. I also saw a couple people eating it around me and it looked delicious but decided to go with Nagoya Hitsumabushi or eel dish. I was so glad I did. While simple, this eel over rice was the ultimate comfort food. It was served with some green onions, pickles and a cup of dashi/tea broth. The eel was cooked perfectly and so tender. The dish was great by itself but the server recommended I mix in the greens and dashi after I had tried it alone. The dashi tea added an earthy/salty flavor that completely elevated it all! Such an amazing combo. Would 100p recommend if you are craving a traditional comfort meal! I will have to come back to try dinner. read more

The wait kept getting dragged longer due to the reservations that'd get Seated first. This restaurant is very small... and I don't think they accounted correctly for their growth. I got the chawanmushi. I loved chawanmushi in Seattle and felt this one was decent, but nothing spectacular. The egg was silky, but the flavor was a bit lacking. Maybe it would have been better with the salmon roe... but that was an additional 7 dollars. I then got the omurice. I've seen the fluffy omurices on YouTube and was really excited. You'd get to split it open and it's fluffy and like perfectly half cooked. This... wasn't it. The egg was aight. The rice was what bothered me. I don't feel like the rice should have had clumps. I understand that it's mixed with a tomato sauce, but biting into clumps of rice wasn't my favorite. The pork belly was good, and I appreciated it being kind of incorporated in the rice as well. Overall, the omurice was very one dimensional for me. The salad on the side seemed like an afterthought, with a bit too much of an oily vinaigrette. My husband got the duck confit. We love duck confit. This one... while the portion was good, was off. The duck was a bit too salty. The cous cous was crunchy? Maybe it was meant to be like that. And apparently the bread accompaniment left him wanting. Sort of like... the bread was under toasted and then left out too long? Service was... they tried their best. The hostess was genuinely trying her best to manage the customers. The servers were nice. I was a bit peeved the owners wife (who's supposed to be the hostess to my knowledge), just took up a table talking to a friend for about an hour and a half or more. When she was done, she tried to help the hostess but ended up slowing down the process. For the long wait and high price range, I would not come back for breakfast. Not sure what the third dish that was orange in color was but tasted unique. Came with the simple salad, rice, and soup to make it hearty. 4.5/5: Kakuni Omurice - The Omurice was delicious! Underneath was a big layer of fried rice that was covered with ketchup. The egg, rice, ketchup, and crispy pork belly all went so well together. The side salad was great to balance out the fattyness of the pork belly taste since this dish could get heavy. 3.5/5: Matcha Creme Brûlée - maybe they put too much matcha in this batch LOL bc it tasted a bit too bitter to my liking. Which may be good too since they used quality matcha. The caramelized top was amazing and it came with slices of strawberries on top to balance out the sweetness of the creme brûlée. I tried this place for the first time today, at the suggestion of a friend. It was lovely. I thought it might be Japanese/French fusion. But it's mostly separate Japanese and French dishes. The waiter mentioned a fusion dish that was often on the menu. The chef was trained in France, worked at a French restaurant in Japan, and owned a French restaurant in Pasadena i went to years ago. He's very talented. Today, I had duck confit with couscous, and a side salad. Everything was lovely. The service was great. The location is small and quaint. But it's a nice little place. As you can see from the picture, it comes PACKED; rice, miso soup, salad, pickled veggies, a pate-like dish, protein, and a misc side. Everything tasted delicious and I was extremely full by the end. The place is small so definitely recommend making reservations. I got lucky and was seated in a table of two in about 10 minutes. Service was very nice, quick, and efficient. Absolutely love this hidden gem! Calling it hidden since it's not on the main blocks where all the restaurants are at. I like the fact that they take reservations because the restaurant is not that big. They have a few tables inside, and some outdoor seating. I wouldn't recommend it for large parties. The server recommended the daily bento since it was my first time, but I went with my gut and decided on the Nagoya hitsumabushi (bbq eel bowl). I have to say I'm pretty happy with my choice; the eel was seasoned really well. The sauce wasn't overly sweet, and the eel texture was great. They give you green onions on the side to add as you like, and a very mild sauce that you can either dip your eel with, or pour it over the bowl. I also had their pear and apple tart tartins and thought both were good. Nothing out of the ordinary but still good! The only bad thing about Azay is the few hours that they're open! 2.5 hours open for lunch, and 2 hours for dinner, so plan accordingly. Parking can be tough as it's Little Tokyo. My friend and I were there for brunch. After reading so many good reviews about the restaurant, I was disappointed with the food quality. The rice came with our meals was really wet and soggy. I thought that the rice should be very basic cooking in the Japanese cuisine. And the rice portion is extremely small that came with our meals. I do not recommend this restaurant. read more
