So glad to have found a go to Cuban coffee spot in San Diego! All the locals will tell you about this place, and I thought it would be overhyped until I actually got the chance to try it. It was outstanding and the coffee was super authentic and yummy. There were so many options of delicious looking pastries to choose from, and I didn't know what to pick. I chatted with the staff and they recommended the quiche for me so I ordered that and got to sit outside, do some work, and do some people watching while enjoying my treats. I always recommend this to other friends now that I've gotten a chance to go. Sometimes there's a really long line, but it's definitely worth it. No, I can probably say I'm one of the locals who will recommend azucar to others!

Tried their new coconut cake, DIVINE!!! Not too sweet & super moist & fluffy. And of course their Divina cake (moist white chocolate soufflé cake w/ passion fruit & raspberry curd & toasted marshmallow IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE, if you're a passion fruit fanatic like me.

Highest recommendation of all the places I've tried in OB so far! We got the Cubano and latte for drinks. Pastries included the meat pie, florentine, coconut cake, passion fruit caramel, guava cheese pastry, and sweet corn scone. Honestly they were all pretty impressive and I can't wait to come again. Total cost was about $37, super affordable for the quantity and quality. Lively and loud inside, they had a small line out the door so we waited for about 30 minutes but it's worth it I think - people taking too long to decide with the many many choices available inside. After ordering received the order in about 5 minutes. Limited seating inside, about 8 seats with two larger benches outside.

I can't believe I'm actually saying this after my very first visit and amongst my family, friends, and fellow foodies, what I'm about to say might be sacrilegious, but after eating the pastry, scone, and savory item, I might be scorned and shamed. I've got to be true to my foodie self and boldly make this claim. Azucar is a better Cuban bakery than Cuban bakery institution Porto's. Yep, I said it and I'm sticking by it!! Brought my better half here and we spoke effusively about what we chowed down on. We glowingly raved about Azucar that my wife, who works in the patisserie business, took the time to let one of their employees know that she enjoyed every item she ate. 5 stars for their baked goodies, but their white chocolate latte with hazelnut was okay. Azucar is located in Ocean Beach (OB), which is a laid-back, bohemian neighborhood in San Diego known for its authentic surf culture, independent shops, and dog-friendly atmosphere, especially at Dog Beach. It's a short drive from Sea World and Mission Beach. OB with it's eclectic Mom and Pop small businesses interspersed with name brand retail shops appears to be a fun place to walk around. Azucar can be found amongst these shops next to the Sunset Cliffs Blvd. and Newport Ave. intersection, next to Newport Avenue Optometry and Speedway Express gas, and across the street from Sourdough & Moore. Parking is 2-hour street parking. Azucar has a small footprint with a few tables inside and a couple of tables outside. As you wait in the long, fast moving line, you'll see the blue and white palm tree wall with the different languages for the word sugar; the blue decorative lighting and cylindrical wooden artpiece hanging over the register; and there are framed pics of Cuban life. The gentleman who assisted us was friendly and worked fast. My life partner was familiar with Azucar and wanted to indulge in their scones for her early Mother's Day treat. Apparently, Azucar's owner has Cuban roots and has Cuban-inspired food, but it serves a variety of desserts, pastries, cakes, and confectionary delights. Besides their sweets, they also serve barista style coffees, teas, cold drinks, and sandwiches. Please don't be deterred by the long line flowing out the door because Azucar's staff hustles. Plus, it gives you time to ogle at the beautifully crafted desserts and pastries. I haven't eaten everything we purchased, but solely based on the three items I ordered, I made the lofty claim that Azucar is better than Porto's. These three pastries are Must Order items if you visit this bakery: Cuban Cheese Roll, Cuban Meat Pie, and Sweet Corn & Honey Scone. That Cuban cheese roll had a salivating, sweet, and creamy filling and the pastry itself was flaky and addictively tasty. I savored every single bite of the meat pie that packed a lot of yumminess in that small package. I just wished it was bigger. Make sure to ask for their hot sauce to add spice to that meat pie. The sweet corn & honey scone was like a biscuit, golden yellow, had a balanced taste, and it ate really well with my white mocha hazelnut latte. We also ordered the following: raspberry and passion fruit scone, peach scone, blueberry coconut scone, tiger butter cookie, salted toffee oatmeal cookie, and chocolate chunk cookie. I'm sure they will be as delish as the three items I raved about. We've visited Porto's in Orange and Los Angeles Counties and I've always questioned why there isn't a San Diego location. Welp, after my first visit to Azucar, we don't need a Porto's in San Diego any more.

Yum. Yum. Yum. We saw a line out the door and hopped in it. Sampled the Espana and a Guava Pastry. Took a little while for the Espana to come out but it was worth the wait. Both of the items we tried were so delicious. Cute space too. Will be back for lunch and desserts!

Ez website ordering ... I skipped the queue . The best part about ordering the night before is forgetting what was ordered and being surprised when the box is opened (and consumed). Located in Ocean Beach, San Diego, Azucar is an amazing spot for Cuban Pastries. It trumps even the best cuban bakeries we have in Los Angeles! Despite having a small footprint with limited indoor seating, they pack incredible flavor. We had a banana cheesecake that was light and delicious. Their guava pastry on puff pastry was delicate and delicious! They had addictively good toffee oatmeal cookies, their meat pies were flavor bombs, and their cheese roll was crispy, gooey, and wonderfully chewy. I couldn't pass up getting a half "Espana" sandwich, which had a Spanish omelette with Manchego cheese. It was made to order and when it was out of the panini press, it was deliciously hot and crispy. What a great bite! Overall, this patisserie was one of my favorites of this year and I know that I'll be back when I come back to SD!

I had to reread my old review to figure out why I'd ever give this place 4 stars. Looks like I was less than pleased with the service, but gosh, the pastries are such a hit here, it deserves nothing below 5 stars. I'd also say that people have been friendly the last few times I've come, so I'll chalk it up to a bad day! Azucar is one of San Diego's best bakeries. They truly make some of the most delicious treats. At this point, I've tried almost everything and it's all a hit. The scones are so incredibly and they always have such interesting flavors whether you want corn or passionfruit, peaches or chocolate. I love the guava and cheese pastries and the sour cream cake is to die for. My husband recently got me a full sized cake for my birthday and it was so incredible. Beyond the taste, it was so beautifully decorated! I'm not a caffeine drinker, but indulge in the occasional decaf latte. They make an outstanding one. Everything about this place is the best!

Came here for the first time and am shocked I haven't been here sooner! We had their pumpkin latte and cafe con leche. Both were delicious. Just be aware they were both on the sweeter side but that's normal for Cuban drinks and we loved them. As for the pastries all of them were fantastic! Special shout out to the pumpkin snickerdoodle, the meat pie, pastelito with queso, and the manchego and jamón pastry. Their desserts were GORGEOUS and perfectly sized. In the future we will be returning to get items for whatever party we will be going to where we want to impress. It's a cute small little coffee shop. There are three tiny tables inside and two outside. Parking is street so I could foresee that taking a hot second, especially when they are busy. We went on a Friday AM and the line ebbed and flowed but was constant so just be aware of that. Highly recommend!

This is a nice neighborhood bakery in Ocean Beach area. Parking can be a challenge and the lines can be long but it's definitely worth the visit. The shop offers a nice variety of Portuguese style pastries and beautifully decorated cakes. It also has dog treats too and nice bitter coffee and latte drinks. The service is also friendly and efficient, which I appreciated. The only thing I wish they could improve is their bathroom sanitation issues. I went to use the bathroom and my legs got covered by gnats / sink bugs that were crawling in and out of the drains on the floor. Totally gave me the heebies jeebies. It would also be nice if it had an automatic faucet and soap dispenser as well. Looking forward to revisiting again in the future, nonetheless.

Wow! This is a delicious pastry/dessert/coffee shop. We came here multiple times on our short weekend trip to ocean beach. Tried their savory breakfast items, delicious dessert pastries, cookies and coffee. Really enjoyed the señor peanut, a delicious peanut butter mousse on a chocolate shortbread cookie covered with a chocolate ganache. What a dessert bomb!

Awesome, I loved this place in Ocean Beach. The food was fresh and the soup was excellent. Nice to sit outside and people watch. Fries were different but so very good. My only complaint was that after a sandwhich and splitting a bowl of soup I did not have room for dessert. Guess I will be back! read more

Believe all the hype, this place is worth the wait in line! I always stop by here when I need to get a dessert to bring to a party or give to someone for a special occasion. They look so pretty you won't want to eat them! But trust me, eat them! Everything I have tried there has been on point. I've even tried their gluten free desserts and you can't tell at all! I have never tried the Cuban coffee, but it must be good because there is always a line in the morning for it. They can do cakes too, which I didn't know about until recently. So I will for sure go back the next time I need a cake! It's a little pricey, but it's totally worth it! read more

My brother and his wife were in town last week, and let me start by saying they are from Burlington VT., so needless to say they are not into the staple San Diego shit of chain restaurants and other generic crap. So I have driven by Azucar a thousand times and was interested because it, well, looks cool. So I decided to take them there for a coffee and a light morning bite. I am pretty glad I did. Their pastries are really tasty and they have good coffee for sure. My sister in law said it was the best cup she had in here. OB needs more stuff like this. Thanks I will be back........ read more

Was looking for assorted sweets for a party and stumbled along this place in OB. Everything I took out with me was beautiful, delicious, and fresh. I came at the end of the day at closing and there was still a wide assortment of goodies to choose from and the woman helping me was incredibly helpful, friendly and patient. The thing that will keep me coming back, though, was the salted chocolate caramel. A good sized 4 bite square was $0.50 and satisfied my sweet/salt craving and kept me thinking about coming back all weekend. I plan on stopping by here more often! read more

Just moved to OB about 2 weeks ago and have been exploring the area for great food and drinks. I passed this storefront almost daily thinking it was a pastry/ desert place. After seeing a review on Yelp, I had to try the Cubano sandwich. IT IS AWESOME. I have been all over the country and have had many people trying to make cubans, Miami included, and this is one of the best! Pork was juicy, bread crunchy, just enough mustard and pickles. It came with plantain chips and homemade garlic mojo. I have to go back tomorrow and try their other sandwiches now. read more

Stopped here about 7 minutes before closing so I was feeling a bit rushed on ordering. We ordered the coconut flan and a tiramisu. The flan was absolutely delicious! Nice and creamy and flavorful but not overly sweet. It had the perfect consistency and we just loved it! The tiramisu was ok. It had a strong rum taste and was too bitter for me. It looked very good but I don't think I would order it again. I will be back for more flan though! Just wished it was a bigger size! haha read more

I loved the pastelito de guayaba y queso (have them warm it up for you), its sooo good !!!! Wow. this place lives up to its incredible reputation. it's my new go-to after a morning at OB dog beach. I had a delicious espresso (even the decaf is good!), $1 ham croquettes, and an unexpectedly delicious cheese roll (melted sweet cheese wrapped in pastry, coated with sugar. yum). can't wait to try more of their tasty treats! read more

Haven't tried all of the pastries yet, but I'm making my way through them. The desserts are the main reason people come here (and I haven't tried one that less than delicious), but the most unexpected surprise was the Cuban sandwiche. It is very good and is reasonably priced. read more

Superb! I moved to San Diego just over a year ago and have been dying to find a place that can make desserts like they do back home...in NY. These guys go above and beyond! The present of their desserts is mouth watering...and the taste...mind blowing! Bring some of Azucar's desserts to your next bbq or get together and you will certainly impress! I had a few hours to kill in OB last weekend (car at mechanic) and I tried Azucar for the first time. I ordered a large mocha coffee and parked myself in the seating area. My coffee was delicious and it was hard not to notice how many regular customers frequented this place. I'm dieting, so I didn't try the food, but it looked fantastic. I will be back to Azucar to try a pastry post-diet. My only complaint is the chairs they provide are a little uncomfortable. Not a big deal. read more

We tried this place after a morning at the beach. We were going to go to the place that had the fish tacos that we kept hearing about but didn't have cash on us. I'm glad we came here. We both got a sandwich and then took some desserts home. The sandwiches were amazing. I had the salad with mine which was okay, but my husband had the plantain chips and they were outstanding, especially with the sauce they came with. We took three desserts home and all three were great. I can't wait to go again. read more

I have nothing bad to say about this place. Great selection of pastries for breakfast and dessert like options. Opted for a guava paste filled one and I could devour a dozen but kept my cool with one. Service was personal and polite. I'll have to come back for other treats another day. read more

AZÚCAR IS BORN! Continuing to make wedding cakes and desserts from home, Vivian decided to make this a full-time career. She felt San Diego needed a more tropical style of dessert. So, Vivian decided to combine her European training and Cuban roots to create Azúcar. Azúcar means sugar in Spanish and it is what gives life to Vivian's creations! Azúcar specializes in hand-decorated sweet works of art including cakes, cupcakes, cookies and desserts. Azúcar offers some specialty Cuban items such as croquetas, pastelitos, and of course Cuban sandwiches. Each one of a kind item is hand-made with only the finest ingredients.

Azúcar is the fulfillment of a life-long dream for Vivian Hernandez-Jackson. Vivian has combined her classical French training with her Cuban roots to develop a unnique product line of cakes and pastries that combines traditional favorites with new flavors and designs. Born and raised in Miami to Cuban parents, Vivian Hernandez has been baking since the age of seven. Dessert was always a huge part of growing up and every meal was followed by something sweet. Being one of five children, Vivian had plenty of taste testers. Years later, Chef Vivian brings sweets into the homes of all her customers.

I don't even know where to begin with this. I looove Azucar! I found out about this awesome place when someone told me that I absolutely HAVE to try their meat pies. So I went to Azucar and fell in love with the place. The meat pies are delicious, but even better are the guava and cheese pastries. One bite and you're hooked. The pastry itself is crispy and flaky. The filling... wow. Normally you wouldn't think of guava and cheese going well together, but it works!! Last week I went to Azucar for lunch and, again, it was AWESOME!! I had the Cuban in Paris sandwich (brie, ginger sauce and pears... odd combination, I know, but it's absolutely delicious) and my sister had the Havana (turkey and guava paste) and we split them so we had half and half. With the sandwich you get your choice of a salad with citrus vinaigrette or fried plantain chips with a mojo sauce. Both the salad and the plantain chips are wonderful! The lunch was so good, I'm planning on going back this week! And now for the best thing ever.... their cakes. The cakes on the display are great, even though I haven't tasted them all yet (ok, so I've only tried like 1 or 2 from the display, but I plan on tasting more!) But what is really amazing are the cakes you have to order. My birthday was in May and for some reason I was checking out Azucar's website and saw that they sell birthday cakes, so I chose one of those for my birthday. I chose the vanilla cake with passionfruit and raspberry filling. WOW!! That is the best cake I have ever tasted.... EVER!! The cake itself is delicious, but the frosting... it's sooo good. It's a vanilla frosting and you can see all the little specks of vanilla bean. It's sweet and yummy, but it's not too sweet because you get the tangyness of the passionfruit and raspberry filling so it's a great combo. And it's decorated with pretty chunks of white chocolate on the top and sides of the cake!! It just doesn't get any better than this cake. So if you love delicious food, awesome pastries and a great location (come on, it's near the beach!), you just HAVE to try the food at Azucar!! read more

I stopped by with my boyfriend the other week after hearing wonderful things about this place. I had the passionfruit tart, the mojito cookie and the biscocho. The passionfruit tart was OKAY...the crust was a big sweet for my taste. when you bite into the crust you get chunks of sugar. The passionfruit curd was good though. The mojito cookie is very clever, i found it different. I liked how the other crust was slightly crunchy with a soft and chewy inside. My boyfriend's favorite was the biscocho....that was also my favorite. The coconut shortbread with dulce de leche was yummy! It wasn't too sweet...just perfect. I will definately be going back to try more of there sweet treats! I only knocked off a star because the crust of the passionfruit tart was sickenly sweet. read more

Man, this place is delicious! If you like sweets like me, this is heaven. Their cakes are beyond good, and so different from the generic cakes you can buy at stores everywhere. Their pastries are so tasty and sweet. The sandwiches are different and awesome. I like the service as well. I hate talking over the phone but both times I've ordered cakes over the phone, the person has been super nice to talk to. I want to try every thing they have in their display case...hopefully I will. Nothing has been disapointing. Thank you Azucar, you satisfy my sweet tooth big time!! Triple espresso chocolate gluten free cookies!!!! They ran out today and usually run out. The cookies have a crispy crust soft and melt chocolate all around. Mmmmmmmmm!!! They have so much more but these are my favorite! Their desserts are pretty awesome and im usually greeted with a smile. I also recommend the tiramisu and meat pies. Its a cute spot to get some coffee and sit and chat. But ehhh no parking can be a big pain if u want to be quick. read more

When I first moved to San Diego my wife took me here for my birthday. I'm not much of a sweets guy but we needed up getting literally the birthday cake. After my first experience we came back and then ordered the cubano sandwich. Wow! Amazing. Every-time we have guest over we make it over there and and get the cubano then go to sunset cliffs to eat and enjoy the view. Highly recommend! read more

Whenever I'm in ocean beach, I simply have to stop here and pick up their mint mojito cookies. I have tried to replicate the recipe, but at 1.25 a piece it's definitely worth the stop.
