We didn't have to wait for a table, though they were busy each time. The food came out quickly and was delicious. We tried the lamp post, the Bay Street scramble and the bourbon bacon burger. All of them were great! Mimosas are a bit small for $8, so you're better off ordering a carafe. read more

Every time my friends and I are in Savannah, we choose a different brunch spot to catch up, and this time around, it was B. Matthews. There was a wait, but we were put into an electronic system where they would call us when our table was ready. So we didn't have to waste time waiting and were able to walk around the nearby squares for a little bit. I ordered the Crab Benedict (I love eggs Benedict!) and iced Coffee. This place is very popular; MAKE A RESERVATION. This is one of the few restaurants that actually does set aside a table for you if you make a reservation. If you make a reservation, don't be late, because they will give your table away. We did NOT have a reservation and with that being said, our experience kind of bummed me out. The hostess was mean, in the kind of way that you expect a fine dining establishment with a superstar chef to be (part hospitable, part bouncer)...but for this place? I don't know. She was mean but did it in a pleasant tone. When we arrived she informed us it would be a 45 minute wait, OK fine, so we head to the bar. It turns out when we got to the bar there were 2 open seats, so we sat, and the bartender asked if we'd be dining. I said that was fine with us but the bartender told us to ask the server. When we asked the server she said that bar seats were part of restaurant seating. What? If I put in my name for a table and the hostess proceeded to show me to a seat at the bar, I would be less than pleased. So instead, we just ordered drinks. I had a mimosa which was very boozy (lots of champagne!) and my boyfriend was pleased to be able to order a screwdriver (since most places only offer beer/wine/mimosas/bloody mary). We took our drinks over to the "waiting area" which is next to non-existent and can hold about 5 people total. The hostess seemed annoyed with us all standing there, but there was no way we were going to wait outside in the heat. We watched as about 3 more parties ask if they could just sit at the bar and were denied. We also watched the hostess tell a table they were 30 minutes late for their reservation and she could no longer accommodate them, unless they wanted to be at the end of the walk-up list. Once we were finally seated, we had an excellent experience. My waffle was great and I enjoyed my home-made biscuit that I ordered on the side. My favorite thing from this restaurant, by far, were the drinks. At the table I ordered a bellini and that was excellent, just like my mimosa. Our server was really nice and was spot-on with service. Unfortunately, the whole experience felt quick since we had spent so long waiting, we had already decided what we wanted for breakfast, so we ordered as soon as we sat, and the food came out quick. I wanted biscuits and gravy for breakfast, but I also wanted veggies, so I got both! Let me tell you about these biscuits -- they were so good they made me feel guilty after I ate them. The good kind of guilty, though. (Is there even such a thing?) They were obviously fresh and the nooks and crannies made them light and fluffy. Their sausage gravy was no joke either. We didn't talk much during this meal; too busy eating good food. Like most Savannah establishments, the servers were so sweet! Went for dinner with a party of 11 and everyone LOVED their dinners. Low Country Bowl was amazing and seasoned perfectly, Osso Bucco was tender and amazing on top of the best Mac and cheese. We were here twice, once for dinner and once fo brunch. The dinner was late in the evening and not very crowded. It was excellent with a good bartender and excellent southern food. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere relaxing. On Labor Day brunch it was not as good. Our server forgot the biscuits that came with the scrambled eggs plate my wife had and my biscuits and gravy was almost to salty to eat. This place is awesome! My girlfriend and I first tried this place while visiting Savannah from Orlando in 2010. We were only there for 3 days and 2 nights and ate at a TON of places. We tired B. Matthews on a bit of a whim and were very impressed. We actually enjoyed it enough to go a second time on that short trip. The biscuits and gravy were fabulous. Those two meals we had there kind of stuck with us over the years. Fast forward to a few weeks ago. We're driving up to Boston from Orlando and decided to make a breakfast stop just for this place. I was a little worried that perhaps we built it up too much, or that the place would be different now. I had nothing to worry about! The service was good, the place was clean, and the food was ridiculous. I've had quite a few "renowned" biscuits at places before, but the biscuits at this place are about as good as them come. It's located over at the east end of historic district on Bay Street near Lincoln. There are on street parking if you get lucky. The place is small, simply decorated yet exerts a sense of elegance. My friend and I arrived shortly after 1pm on Sunday. The place was not that crowded but there was a few people still waiting. It took awhile before the hostess greeted me; she seemed a little overwhelmed. May be it was super busy earlier, but the place is quite small, it shouldn't been that difficult to keep tract of tables in my humble opinion as an ex-hostess. I can see getting/waiting for a table during more peak time/season can be stressful. Service was ok. Frankly service was the least favorable of the experience. Our waitress was prompt and polite yet missing enthusiasm. We were not offered drink options/menu. It doesn't take much to convince me I need a mimosa, an easy upsell on her part. Too bad she didn't even ask... Time to order and unfortunately they didn't have my duck! They were substituting it with chicken so I opted for shrimp and grits instead. My friend ordered the crab benedict. Food took a while to arrive, which was fine since we were enjoying our conversation. Both our dishes looked fabulous when they arrived. The grits was of perfect consistency: not too thick or thin. It worked great with the gravy that was spooned over the shrimps (I would have liked more of the gravy). The tasso ham resembled andouille sausages, gave a good hint of saltiness to the dish. If anything the shrimps tasted a little bland. My friend was happy with her crab benedict. It was served on a home made biscuit that was more crumbly than flaky. The crab cake itself had a little kick from the seasoning. The egg was poached well with the yolk running out after she cut into it. The dish as served with fresh fruit, making it a relatively light option. The best part was my dish came to less than $9 with tax. The crab benedict was only $10. While the portion was not big, it was of the right size. We stopped at B. Matthew's on our way out of town for a last bite of Savannah and were very pleased with the food. The ham steak - OMG. I don't know what they do to it but it is by far the most tender, melt-in-your-mouth ham I have ever eaten. And, it's not loaded with salt, amen. The shrimp and grits were very good, although the grits were a little too chewy for my personal taste but I know some folks make them that way so I'm chalking it up to a preference thing. The reason I didn't give them 5 stars is for the staff. There was a ton of them but our juice glasses sat empty FOREVER, we asked for silverware twice and coffee refills were non-existent. Our main server (I think) spent all of her time leaning on the inside of the bar and never came and checked on us. There was one really great waitress, I wish I had gotten her name so I could single her out for being kind and pleasant but I unfortunately I never did as she was busy giving her tables great service. We went here for breakfast while visiting Savannah. It was right near our hotel so we walked there. This was easily my favorite breakfast while there. I got what was called the Lamppost and it was delicious. It comes with eggs, potatoes, grits, fluffy biscuit, and choice of bacon or sausage. The bacon is thick cut. The potatoes were crispy and well seasoned, they cooked the eggs just right, and the grits were awesome. Great night out! My mother, husband and I went here on a Wednesday night for dinner. I started off with a gin cocktail called the nightlight- very pretty and quite tasty. We all shared the charcuterie plate with local cheeses and cured meats. I LOVE a cheese plate, and this one had great sides to pair the cheeses with. My husband got a curried lentil dish- delish but VERRRY spicy! Mom got the Mac a cheese and a watermelon and beet salad. The salad had an earthy cumin vinaigrette and goat cheese, and the Mac and cheese had pepper jack cheese and cauliflower baked into it! I got the seared scallops small plate and a side of Brussels. Both of my dishes were very good. The menu had lots of options for small plates and entrees and plenty of sides and options for vegetarians like my mother. Would definitely come back! read more

I was looking for an intimate dinner out with my wife on our anniversary vacation that wasn't crowded or full of drunks or terribly expensive and found this place. It was a little pricey but more than worth it. The food was amazing! The waiter was very knowledgeable and very friendly, and the other staff was just as friendly. I loved this place from the moment I walked in, it wasn't ideal for people in a wheelchair but that was easily overcome by a side door that had a slight slope into the restaurant. read more

We had a great brunch here. We made reservations online for 10 am, we we arrived I felt we could of probably gotten a table without a reservation but it never hurts to make one. However by the time it was 11 am, I saw many people waiting. So here's what we had. I ordered the Old bay scramble. Very delicious, tastes much better than it actually looks. It was scrambled eggs mixed with mushrooms, chopped tomatoes, cheese, scallions and perfectly crisp bacon. It came with a biscuit and I ordered sausage gravy on the side. My husband ordered the Shrimp and Grits and let me just say it was AMAZING. We've been living in Atlanta for the past 2 years and only started trying Grits once we moved to the South and we are big fans and order it often. We both had Matthew's Basic Breakfast, poached eggs, bacon for the Mrs., turkey apple sausage for me, creamy grits and cheese for me and home fries for the wife. Everything was really great, except that the eggs were a bit cold. Not a big deal for me, but my wife has to have her food served HOT! My husband and I spent one long day in Savannah and what a great start we had with brunch at B Matthew's! We arrived 30mins early for our 10am reservation and there was already a wait for those who hadn't thought to book ahead. We were asked to wait about 15mins and were eventually lucky enough to be seated at one of the few outdoor tables. The gorgeous sunny day definitely added to the experience! I had a mixed mosa with apricot juice, my husband had the peach whiskey bellini. My drink was pretty average (as you might expect from a mimosa), but his was quite good! If I was a whiskey drinker, I probably would have enjoyed it even more. My fried green tomato and pimento cheese sandwich was great! It had bacon in it, but I don't even think that was necessary though it certainly didn't take anything away from the meal. The sandwich also came with a side of roasted red pepper potato salad--great flavor! Husband had the crab benedict, which had a wonderful crab cake. Would definitely recommend both of these. Though I only saw the inside briefly while heading to the restroom (I think there was only 1 unisex bathroom in the whole place), it had a nice vibe and rustic-y interior. Street parking was free and easy to find right out front that morning. Price was about what you'd expect and I definitely recommend making a reservation. read more

While I'm normally a pretty generous reviewer "A-OK" was just how I felt after leaving this joint. B Matthews is charming and right near the waterfront and the whole brunch menu looked awesome. However my actual dish was less than stellar. I had the Salmon BLT served on focaccia. This BLT comes with a huge hunk of salmon on it - I was expecting just slivers of lox and instead got a full filet of fish! The bacon was the star in my mouth being extra salty and flavorful (I considered ordering it just as a side) Dense and dry, the the bread was a downer for me. I look at it as a blessing in disguise since the rest of my trip to Savannah involved massive amounts of grease and carbohydrates. Sacrificing the bun for some otherwise tasty protein should make my heart happy. Or maybe just Dr Atkins. read more
