They are famous for their pastrami sandwiches, so my wife, our neighbor friend, and I took the short drive to this one location in Long Beach. The pastrami was really good. We've passed by this location many, many times, and I mistakenly grouped it with the many other male name hamburger walk-ups in Long Beach, but owned by Vietnamese (the name 'Tam' was supposedly just made up, to represent an easy-to-remember name for the restaurant). So we planned a Friday lunch date (bit before noon). There was a long drive-thru line which blocked parking spots, but my wife patiently found a good spot for easier exiting. It's a typical fast food set-up, with ordering and paying (CC accepted) done first, with the food being picked up once your name is called. It was busy, with most people getting pick-up or drive-thru, thus took a little bit of time for our food to be prepared, but was nicely served fresh and hot (which makes a huge difference for greasy food like this). Pastrami Sandwich Special ($19.99) - the thinly sliced beef was stacked high, on a non-descript hoagie roll, with a few pickle slices and cheese to dress (so the flavor of the meat was important here, and I really liked it). They must go through a lot of these, since the pre-sliced meat was still juicy, not having sit around being kept warm. The combo came with really good thick cut fries and a soda (Coke products, assuming no refills). We ended up splitting the sandwich, and half of it would have been enough to fill me up. I understand now why this version of pastrami would be a good choice for a burrito or to top fries. Patty Melt ($5.79) - this was OK, a good way to cheaply satisfy hunger pangs. It had been griddled well, to give the hearty bread a satisfying crunch...but it was really oily (mainly from the oil used to grill). Fried Chicken Sandwich ($11.99) - my wife like this, with it using the same soft bread as the pastrami, but this dressed with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. They use pounded breaded chicken patties, definitely the way it was made in the 80's before Chick-fil-e became the norm. There is a web site for Tam's Burgers, but it is for the restaurant chain located in the Inland Empire (split off from this original branch in 1992). There is no web site for the original Tam's locations in LA County (which means any search on the web for official pages, only brings back the IE ones), but watchers of the 2022 Super Bowl would have noticed a two story replica of their 21st store at the half time show. Each store is semi-autonomous, with this being the only location in Long Beach, named #44.

I now have more issue. I am not satisfied how she handled the entire situation. The lack of concern. Her telling me the hair was not hers. Her offering me to bring it back. But the issue is I drove from work to get it. And I'm not about to bring it back. That is an inconvenience. Also I did not like the fact that when I asked to speak to a manager, she said what is the problem. Then I had to ask her are you the manager, then she said yes. I asked for her name and she mumbled something. But my real issue is now the overall experience. The lack of concern and the way she handled my complaint. Now you might be thinking I'm just a critic. But that is not true. I have changed my opinion about this place due to my findings. Also it is such an inconvenience to leave my job, drive back down there. They employ students from Cabrillo High School which helps provide jobs within the surrounding community. They're located directly across the street from Cabrillo High School. The service has always been friendly whenever I call to place a phone order. By the way, if you opt for the deep-dish pizza they'll let you know it takes around 45 minutes to prepare. Besides deep dish, they also offer a traditional crust pizza along with a variety of desserts. The deep-dish pizza itself is amazing! Each pie comes with eight hefty slices of pure marinara and cheesy goodness. They definitely don't skimp on the toppings either. I highly recommend their Spicy Deep Dish, which is more flavorful than spicy in my opinion. Overall, I recommend this spot to anyone in the area looking for a really good deep-dish pizza or simply wanting to try something new. 5000 Pies (specializing in Chicago-style deep dish pizza) has been on my radar for a while…read more Finally had a chance to get pick-up on a Friday afternoon, in preparation for watching the NBA finals. This is a restaurant with a cause that's been open for more than 11 years now, and still going strong. The restaurant is owned and operated by a West Long Beach church (restaurant name comes from the New Testament: feeding of the 5,000 Miracle). The church sponsors a youth culinary program here, and employs students from the nearby high school (Cabrillo). Hours continue to be limited, only open from 14:30 - 18:30, Wed - Fri (closed Sa - Tue). Previously, required to make a phone call to pre-order (necessary since a deep dish can take up to an hour to bake). But noticed that on their homepage, they encourage ordering on-line via a delivery service, so used Door Dash (using $5 monthly credit from CSR credit card), and it accurately reflected the menu. Took the next available slot which happened to be 50 minutes from order taking. Got a large deep dish with with 3 toppings ($31): sausage, pineapple, and ham. Later learned that DD charges restaurants a flat 6% fee, even for customer pickup, so probably will order from here directly next time. The restaurant does use a modern POS system (looked like Clover?), but one would need to call to place the order (which I've not done with any restaurant in a long time). Got there a bit early. This place is take-out only (no place to sit down and eat), but there a few stools to sit down while waiting. The order ended up taking 20 minutes longer than the promised time, which wasn't great. While waiting, noticed a lot of customers were high school aged students coming in for snacks (a very popular dish seemed to be chicken jaguar [nickname of the high school] fries). Employees are young adults, and the cashier/order taker was friendly. Kept the pizza warm in the oven until game-time. It was well made. Tons of value here...eating one slice (out of 8) will do a good job of filling one up. The crust wasn't so buttery, which for me was a good thing, and was dry enough not to get too soggy. The toppings were OK, wasn't a ton of toppings as some pizza places do, thus would recommend double toppings if you like one in particular. Used plenty of cornmeal at the bottom of the crust. And there was a decent amount of cheese. Really liked the taste of the plentiful sauce on top as well. Growing up in Chicagoland, I've had my share of deep dish pizza and definitely fall in the camp of Chicago tavern style pizza being better, but sometimes you get a hankering. There are some good deep dish here in LA land though, with Masa being the best (this isn't as good as that).
