This place is unbelievably delicious. If vegan food always tasted like this, I could easily be vegan! I ordered the large Soul Plate and finished every single bite. I was first introduced to them through a BMHCE program that provides meals to expecting mothers, and I was honestly shocked by how amazing the food was. I had it delivered yesterday and loved it so much that I came back the very next day. What I love most is that after eating a full meal, I feel satisfied and energized instead of weighed down. You can truly taste the quality of the ingredients and the care that goes into every dish. Everything tastes fresh, clean, and made with intention. I can't say enough good things about this place. It's been a while and I miss Baba's Vegan Cafe thoroughly. Vowed that when I was in the area I would stop by after seeing him post a delectable looking Chickpea Tuna Sandwich on IG. But when I arrived. I ordered the Baba Nachos with three Mushroom Tacos, (go figure). Baba Wose and Bi Imani served me my meal personally which really spoke to their service to our community. I smiled and am truly grateful for their kindness and engagement. My meal hit the entire spot. Fresh Vegetables, tasty Sauces, and delicious textures were champions hands down. Great food, kind people, and such a peaceful atmostphere. It was my first time visiting and I find it so refreshing compared to other vegan spots i've been to. The restaraunt is small and they seem short staffed so try to come in with extra patience :) I had the build-your-own bowl with the mushroom fritters & the nachos, both were amazing!! First time and really liked the food. Street parking on a residential area. Walked in and the area had seating space to eat or wait . They had a small boutique to purchase items. The person taking my order was very nice and helped me with the menu. Once I decided I used my apple pay card. The food is made to order but I didn't wait long. FOOD Welcome Bowl ($12 for regular size): First of all, the portions are extremely generous for the price. We got the regular size instead of the large, and it was still more than enough for a single person. The bowl comes with various carbs and vegetables, and they're seasoned to perfection. Each bite is juicy and explodes with flavor. It does the word soul food justice. Lentil patty ($11): So good. The patty is closer to a healthy veggie patty instead of those super processed vegan meats. The mustard sauce inside is super yummy and complements the veggies and patty nicely. The sandwich tastes very "healthy". SERVICE You order at a counter. They accept cash and card. You sit down, and they bring your food to a table. The person at the register was really nice and acted like she truly cared about her customers. She answered all of our questions and guided us when we seemed confused. The kitchen was a bit slow to bring out the food, but that's usually a good sign that a restaurant is putting care into their cooking, and not cutting corners and taking shortcuts. FACILITIES/INTERIOR They have a restroom in the back. Just follow the hallway to the right of the counter. It was clean and everything was stocked properly. The interior is super casual and homey. Went with my brother to Babas. He had a taste for some vegan soul food and Babas kept coming up on his TikTok feed, so he was determined to try them. I was trying to persuade him to try Crystals Soul Cafe-my fav-but we ended up trying something new for both of us. I was kinda sick, so perhaps my tastebuds were off, but I didn't taste much seasoning in anything-just salt and pepper. The food here is healthy, non-processed, which is great. I'm familiar with whole, plant-based, soul food. From Stuff I Eat, to Simply Wholesome and others...I've tried a good amount of it. This wasn't my favorite. We also both got a slice of their chocolate cake. I took it as is-no drizzle, no cream filling, icing, etc. but he mentioned he saw videos of it online with some type of icing. It tasted like a healthy slice of chocolate cake-nothing more, nothing less. Not too sweet, just a hint of sweetness really. We didn't dine in. I didn't see a lot of space inside. As you can see from some of the pics, there's a lot going on inside. We ordered pretty late and to go, so we ate immediately out in the car. It's a great little spot with what seems to be local artists' clothing, accessories and more. We were greeted and didn't feel rushed to order while we figured out what we wanted. On Saturday, Feb 28, 2026, I came right at closing (7pm) and they weren't closed nor were they closing? I'm not complaining. I saw a whole cockroach and it didn't smell very nice! There was no music and the energy of the place was stale. I like that the clerk answered all my questions and made it easy for me to order. I'm cheap so $38 is just a bit much for me for the experience that I had, more like $20? The "Build A Bowl" was PATHETIC for $12, more like $7! I guess they were tired. I will definitely be going back for the potato chowder and some more desserts. So got there about 11:30 and they looked like they just opened up the gal who helped (Sorry didn't get her name)...was pretty friendly she even encouraged people to sing = karaoke ... but you know people like me are shy! She told us the food would take about 25 to 30 minutes looks like they weren't ready....and they were still getting situated...that was fine not in a rush.... I really wanted Vegan Soul food and wanted to help out a small business. They have a lot of other things for sale and other things to do in there not a lot of tables and chairs though....but we were the first customers in. Pretty cool decor overall....I'm a vegetarian that eats probably 99% vegan the others I had come weren't and my friend invited another person who is a vegan. Overall the food was good...flavorful and well cooked not overly salty and had that freshness to it all... I tried a little of everything I wasn't a fan of the tuna on the side dish with the chef's choice...mac n cheese was good, mushrooms was good... Now for my dish: I'll start with the bad the Lime Juice did taste a bit watered down but more important matters the Baba's Grit Bowl... Wonderful! Grits topped with potato chowder, "cheese sauce" and lentil fritters....there were greens in it as well not sure exactly what they were but it was really good.... I've been wanting to try Baba's for a minute and it was well worth the wait! There's only two other places in LA where I go for my vegan soul food and this is definitely being added to the line up. It's bomb and healthier than the other two places! The service is amazing -- Love was full of life and love. She was so welcoming and accommodating. The vibes was vibin in the restaurant, which also has a little shop along the walls and a small library in the back! It was giving Black excellence and self-love all day It's taco Tuesday so, as a taco expert, I HAD to have a taco. Let me tell you, the walnut taco was HITTING! I should've got three but I only got one so as to not be a phatty :-( I bet you won't realize you're eating walnuts lol The dinner plate with the fried mushrooms was full of flavor and packed with options. You know how on thanksgiving you try to get that perfect bite with a little Mac n cheese plus a bit of greens and a dab of yams? I want to support this vegan restaurant - I really do - so I am going to give them another shot for 5 stars because I feel they just need consistency in their quality and service. Just today I tried to order a meal through Uber Eats. I was given a sandwich instead of the oyster mushrooms I wanted. I sent back an order for a side and drink through Uber Eats again after speaking to someone from the restaurant who assured me they would include the oyster mushrooms I originally ordered in this 2nd order. This time my order arrived without the drink I ordered. $65 spent and, mind you, I'm just trying to get a complete meal. On a previous occasion I'd ordered one of their soul plates. It arrived with lentils instead of black eyed peas. Honestly, that's as bad as raisins in potato salad. When I called they said they didn't have black eyed peas that day. I feel this is a great vegan soul food concept and the food I've experienced so far is hearty with a home-cooked appeal. I just feel there can be improvement in consistency. The owner, Baba, added his own special seasonings to make it truly one of a kind. The moment I opened my plate I was met with a smell that instantly warmed me. I had the Welcome Plate, and off of the name itself proves to me that I was truly welcomed here. It comes with a kale salad, cold mac, greens, mixed veggies, potatoes, beans and rice, fried cauliflower and mushrooms and of course homemade sauce. If this isn't how you are greeted at any other restaurant, do they even care about you?? First bite was the Cold Mac: where has this been all my life, this is a side dish that I need every day. Next was the perfectly crunchy fried cauliflower dipped in that homemade dill sauce. Every bite after that was inhaled, I was hungry! Baba's Vegan Cafe is located on Western, in South Central LA. Parking is so easy on the street just mind the signs. The food is all takeaway. There is seating to wait for your food and a table that looks like you may be able to eat there, but I am not sure that is their intent . The place is adorable with a great exterior. The inside is super with a selection of books to look at while you wait for your food and a few comfortable places to sit and wait. I would call ahead if I were you and order. It gets really buy. I am unaware of another vegan place nearby. All of the food is vegan and some of it is spicy, unlike some other vegan places where the food sort of tastes all the same. They make the best greens, you will love them. The kale salad is so good. You can get that alone or with the Welcome Plate that has a bit of a lot of great food.
