Extremely disappointed in our lunch at Babes Tea Room, mediocre at best and extremely expensive for what we got. Firstly, myself and my 6 sisters had reservations at 1p. we had hoped to be seated outside but were told that a party of our size could not be accommodated on the patio, but when we got to the restaurant, there were 3-4 tops and a table that could have seated at least 6, outside, we are small in stature and could have easily sat the 7 of us. We asked again when we got there and were told that the tables were reserved, not true. The tables sat vacant the entire time we were there and all that needed was to pull 2 tables together but the staff put a kibosh on us sitting outside. no customer consideration at all, it wasn't right. even though there were 4 staff at reception, there was only one waitstaff working. it wasn't busy. again, a real lack of respect and customer courtesy. Also, the dining room was loud and not special. White walks, white tables, a very sterile feeling. And one sister was seated in front of a wall column, c'mon people, show a little decency. Secondly, it is a tea room and there were lots of teas to try, but believe me, there's only so many teas you can try at one sitting. that really wasn't an issue, the real problem was that because there were 7 of us, we were told we couldn't order off the menu (and had some enticing choices,) we could only be served the Afternoon Tea at $39 per person! Very pricey for what you get. 4 types of tea sandwiches, none of which were very good. Tasteless and uninspired. Then 2 choices of mini scones, one bite and I almost choked because the scone was very dry. Then a small assortment of cookies, again not good, nothing we ate was special, edible but not particularly good. Other than the bottomless pots of teas, which we tried a total of 7 different pots, one of us ordered a glass of wine. So other than tea and some tea sandwiches, some scones and some cookies, that was our lunch, boring really. Thirdly, our tab with tax and tip ($60,) was $360!!! For tea and some measly sandwiched a cookies, I was shocked. Never again, staff was rude and unaccommodating (our waitress was okay,) and the price was outrageous. Don't bother, don't go. read more

We had a reservation for three today. When we walked in we weren't greeted very warmly by the woman with the dreadlocks, I think her name was Inya maybe? Anyways I said hello we have a reservation at three for three people. We gave her the name on the reservation and she looked at her book and said ok we're waiting for table to open and she pointed at the table in the corner next to the window. She said it will be about 10 minutes so we waited outside for the table and (Inya) came out about 10 minutes and said "what was the name again" we gave our name and she asked us if we were sure we had a reservation. Dumbfounded by the question because she didn't looked confused or anything when we checked in, I said yes we have a reservation at three. She said are you sure it was today and we said yes we made it yesterday. She then told us that they were over booked and they needed to figure some stuff out. We waited another 10 minutes and my husband finally went back in and said is there a problem to her. She gave a bit of a nasty look and said to one of the other girls working to just sit us over there and pointed to a table by the counter. At this point it seemed as if she was put off by us which was very aggravating. We reluctantly sat down and were sat before two other tables came in. We had a very nice waitress. We would have got up and left if Inya was going to be our waitress. As we were waiting to order there was two or three couples that walked in looking to see if they could be seated without reservations. There were three open tables that were never sat the entire time we were there which was about an hour and half but the couples were turned away by Inya and then she proceeded to come behind the counter and talk nasty about them just walking in! It was nuts! We got our tea and then waited about 20 minutes to get our tower of sandwiches but we were the very last table to get the tower even though we were sat before three other tables. Our tower sat on the counter for probably 5 minutes before one of the other girls asked who the tower was for. Obviously it was ours because every single table that was seated had their food. Their tea list is quite extensive but the first two teas I ordered were out of stock. That was a bit of a let down but there were plenty others to choose from. The sandwiches are great, the clotted cream is amazing, and I did like that you can get however many and different teas you would like. The service can be a lot better. Our waitress was very nice and apologetic about our wait on the food and the seating. I probably won't return just for the fact of being treated like we were lying about having reservations and then seemed like we were treated worse by Inya. read more

I went to House of Commons for breakfast over Labor Day weekend and totally fell in love with the place! It was adorable and charming in exactly the way you would want an English tea house to be. I like the fact that it was classy, but low-key and relaxed, so I didn't feel out of place in a t-shirt and shorts. Servers were very friendly, helpful, and attentive. I had the cream tea breakfast, which included a scone, Devonshire cream, jam, tea (I chose Darjeeling), and a side of fruit. The scone was light and fluffy, the cream was amazing, and the tea was delicious. I stayed a long time, relaxing in the delightful surroundings, listening to classical music and sipping tea. I have just four words: gluten free tea service. Walking into House of Commons, my mouth started to water just looking at the dainty towers of scones, finger sandwiches, and sweet treats. As soon as I sat down, I knew this would be an experience to remember. The tea list is extensive, and I couldn't decide between toasted rice green tea and ginger peach... So they let me try both! Once the food came, it was everything I had imagined and more. The finger sandwiches (roast beef, curried chicken salad, classic cucumber, and sharp cheddar with jam) were all yummy. The sweets were great. But the scones. The scones were perfect. For all of you out there who eat gluten free, you know the hardest thing to replicate is texture. These were crusty on the outside and crumbly on the inside, just like the regular scones! Once I added the cream and jam, it was delightful. Overall, I love this place. I flew in from San Francisco on Mother's Day and my son surprised me by taking me to a tea room. WE arrived on time and were seated outside on a rickety plastic table next to dumpsters on a very windy day. I politely asked the waitress if I could change seating since there was a lovely shaded area outside against the restaurant, and an area inside as well. She gave me an excuse about a 90 minute rule. Then she said she would check inside to see if she could remove all the "to go" boxes off a large empty table. She came back and said that she could not. Since we were out in the blazing sun and wind, the sandwiches quickly dried out. I'm a big fan, and frequent visitor. House of Commons is on my favorite street in Denver (Platte), where the people- and dog-watching are fantastic. I love going for tea and scones on a lazy Sunday, and have taken family members there, who really enjoyed it. Having worked in the service industry at a somewhat similar restaurant, I hate leaving a bad review but I have to with this -- What a terrible experience! From the moment we walked in, we weren't greeted then they simply pointed to our table. We sat down and no one came to our table for 15 min.When they finally did, no one explained to us how the ordering or menu worked until we asked. Then they said 2 teas per table, but only after we started ordering one for each person. We had no water cups and when we asked very politely if it were possible to move because the staff kept hitting our chairs, we were told no quite rudely. Throughout the service, we were infrequently checked in with and had to waive people down to ask for anything. After all this, we were rushed out because someone apparently booked our exact table even though no one was waiting for it and when we drove away no one was there. Even when we tried to stay just 5 min to finish the tea we paid for, they came over and without saying anything, took our teapots away. With the exception of two women, the each staff member we interacted with was incredibly rude and curt, even when we continued to be nice and ask politely for things. Not to mention the bread on the sandwiches and the scones were dry and the clotted cream has the texture of frozen butter in one dish and glue in the other. For how much you're charged, please pay a bit more and go to the brown palace! They never disappoint and it's so much more value for you money. And you get to enjoy the experience, as tea should be, not be delayed then shooed out! read more

Hmmm, I'm going to buck the trend of glowing reviews. Based on the experience alone, I would give House of Commons 3 stars, but given the price I've got to drop it down to 2, as I've definitely "experienced better." I'm very glad that I purchased a google offer as it helped a bit with the cost. A friend and I were looking forward to having afternoon tea and hopefully finding a cool new place. The tea was quite good. The tower of goodies was alright. The service was odd. We made a reservation so were promptly seated on a weekend afternoon. We were given a menu with the different varieties of teas. You're sure to find something you like here, as they have numerous choices. The tea was delightful and the best thing about my experience. I opted for English breakfast and added sugar cubes and milk. We did not get a choice of the offerings in the tower of goodies that comes with afternoon tea. In some of the pictures I've seen, there were cupcakes and brownies. And, my friend had read the menu and hoped for little sandwiches with brie. We got none of the above. In our tower we got: 4 varieties of sandwiches (2 small triangles of each per person), 1 regular and 1 cranberry scone per person, lemon poppyseed cake, some sort of mocha cake, and a cookie. Our sandwiches were: cucumber on white bread (good, but I'm not a cucumber fan), Irish cheddar on wheat with what tasted like a touch of sweet jam (these were my favorite sandwiches), roast beef on white with horseradish (pretty good), and chicken curry on wheat (ok). All of the sandwiches were certainly palatable, but the bread was nothing special. The scones were pretty good (I preferred the plain one), especially with the addition of clotted cream and lemon curd. The mocha cake had nuts and was not to my liking. The lemon poppyseed was ok, but mostly because of the frosting. The cookie was blah. The atmosphere was cute, but not so much so that it would draw me back in. Our table was small and my friend and I had to look at each other through the tower/cage. It would have been better to put the flowers, sugar, etc. in the middle of the table and place the tower on the side so that you can see your dining companion. I thought about it, but it would have been cumbersome to rearrange once everything was on the table. And, the service seemed confused. There was nothing in particular bad about the service, but none of our servers seemed completely on top of things and we were asked some strange questions. (Examples - Did we want to use our google offer for the afternoon tea? Well, since that's all we ordered, um yeah, we do. And, we were also approached to see if we had brought a copy of our receipt back up to the counter. Um, no, our copy is still sitting on our table.) Again, before getting the bill the experience for me was 3 stars. This is because I had no idea how much this all was going to cost us. The only menu we received was the tea menu and it did not include any prices. Turns out afternoon tea for two will run you $43.98. Add tip and you're dropping around $25/person. That's just not worth it for the amount and quality of food we ended up receiving. I may try House of Commons again, but if I do, I'll just have tea and perhaps ask for a different menu to be able to order a specific sandwich or sweet. read more

I had never heard of the House of Commons until a month ago, when friends of mine hosted their baby shower there. I am a tea aficionado, and the House of Commons did not disappoint. I sampled their Oolong but mostly I drank their Rooibos--two pots in fact. I would have kept drinking their tasty Rooibos late into the evening if the shower hadn't come to an end. They also served an assortment of finger sandwiches and pastries, all of which were delicious. It's a great place to enjoy a cup of tea, study or meet with your friends, or enjoy a nice lunch. They used to offer this seedy bread that the owner told me they got from a local bakery in Denver (Blue Sky Bakery?) but they no longer have that available, which is too bad. My favorite sandwich is the Wimbledon (mmmm, mint jelly and brie). What I think makes their food outstanding is the desserts. Their scones (or biscuits, to me) are to die for. Their jam and Devonshire cream... oh man. Just one of the most ridiculously delicious things on Earth. Devonshire cream is hard to find, too. My boyfriend is especially crazy about their Parliament bars (peanut butter and chocolate). I feel like their prices are a tiny bit high for what you get, but at the same time I understand rent in LoHi ain't cheap, and you're paying for more than just the food and drinks when you come here. That being said, it's not at all pretentious, and I've never been made to feel like I don't belong, neither subtly or overtly (which let's face it, can happen sometimes in LoHi). Without a doubt, my favorite place for tea in Denver. Way less hoity toity than the Brown Palace, much more modern than the House of Windsor, open more regularly than Capitol Tea, and the list goes on. Whether you come for the traditional high tea, for tea and a dessert, or for a full lunch, the House of Commons is cute, sweet, on par price wise, and offers you a great experience of British style tea right here in America. While I love their regular tea menu, make sure to try their iced tea of the day if it is hot out; it's always different, and sometimes deliciously surprising. I LOVE their ploughman's lunch; it doesn't seem like much, but it is filling, delicious and the perfect vegetarian meal (obviously, not vegan). When they've had vegetarian soups, I've tried them as well, and they were also delish. When I asked how their clotted cream was so delicious, they told me they import it directly from England, rather than trying to make it here or find a local supplier. I highly recommend on the African Rooibos. Then, in what may possibly be the most exciting moment of your day, a beautiful tower of food (think tiny sandwiches, scones, and afternoon desserts) will appear in front of you. Before you know it, the sun will be setting, you'll be completely relaxed and perfectly full from the snacks, and having what very well may be the best conversation of your life. Alright... that may be an exaggeration, but I do find I have some amazing conversations over a pot of tea (or 5). While the service itself can be a little pricey, it's an experience you have to try at least once. If you're not up for shelling out the cash at the moment, you can always go for the less expensive 'cream tea' option, which gets you a pot of tea and scone (the scones are my favorite). We got a great table for 4 in the front window, which made for great people watching outside. They were really busy and it seemed really chaotic in there trying to check in when we got there. Great selections of teas, and a tower full of snacky sandwiches, biscuits and little bits of desserts. The waitress only checked in with us once, although we ended up being fine. The only reason I didn't rate it higher is because the room is rather plain and small. I kept getting bumped by people passing by since the layout isn't conducive to more than just a few people sitting for tea. For the price I was hoping for a little more charm or personality to make it more memorable for a special occasion. It just didn't have a 'destination' feel for high tea and for the prices, I was hoping for a little more oomph. Overall though, I will be back. Ironically, none of these words thus far have been about House of Commons specifically, but I am about to remedy that with my next paragraph. I liked this place. I really did. It wasn't the fanciest, the cheapest, or the best tearoom I've ever been do, but it sure did serve its purpose. The way I'm starting to rate afternoon teas is by how much I feel I would have done differently had I done it myself. If it were me, I'd use nicer china, have a wider tea selection, and make tastier sandwiches. This isn't to say any of their stuff was bad at all, though. I even remember very distinctly telling my boyfriend "oh, I've had much worse." This sounds kind of backhanded, I think... but it's not meant to be. I have, in fact, had much worse. The sandwiches were a little boring, yeah, but the scones were cute and tasted good enough. They also give you real Devonshire cream, which is the only way a tearoom should serve scones. I realize that this opinion may come off as snobby, but that's only because it is. Any kind of whipped cream-like substance goes just fine with the teatime pastry, but I've been to enough tea rooms and have tasted enough mock devon cream to be able to say with utmost confidence that the real thing is the best thing. Unless they give you gold instead. Always eat your scones with gold if you can. Sadly, this place didn't have an option to be served gold, so I settled with their little petit fours at the end. These were actually very good. Like I said, and not to toot my own tea kettle here, I have been to a lot of these places... and the small desserts at the end are never really very good. I've noticed that they're usually pretty dry, and tasteless... other than sweet. You can always taste the sugar. These little cakes, though, were delicious. I even commented on them. That might have actually been the point when I said, "Man, I've had so much worse." I've written that enough times in this review to make me wish yelp had a star rating for that. As for service, it was unmemorable... so, you know, not bad. I'd remember it if it had been bad. The setup was very simple and understated, which I liked, but my boyfriend did not. He said he felt like he was sitting in a mall, which I still don't get. I'm not quite sure what he meant by that, but I'm leaving it here in this little article in the hopes that you, too, will be confused.
