Well let me just say that if you don't have reservations be prepared to be treated like a second class citizen. Our food took forever, the people who came in after us were all served before us. I decided to eat at House of Commons for lunch today. What a pleasant place to dine. It's a small establishment with only 8 tables. If you have a larger group, you would want to call for a reservation. When I arrived, there was one table available. Service was fast and friendly. I tried the Covent Garden sandwich - Irish cheddar, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and mayo. All of their sandwiches are double decker. Mine was on a whole grain role. Yummy! The cheese was sharp and rich. I also had a cup of their soup du jour - pea and ham. You may not think much of pea and ham... but their soup was delicious. I would have been completely satisfied eating a bowl of their soup for lunch, especially on the chilly day we are having here. And lastly, I was sitting next to two gentleman who were very kind. One had connections to Purdue (and I was wearing my Purdue garb). We started chatting. He decided to get a piece of the Uncommon Chocolate Cake and actually brought me an extra fork to take the first bite and taste it (since I had been eyeballing the display case the moment I sat down). How nice of them! The cake was very dense, moist, and chocolatey. It was more like a brownie to me. It was good. Not sure I would want to use up my daily calories on it though. I would definitely go back to try other soups and sandwiches. It's a short walk from the office and I could get back within an hour, if necessary. read more

Love the tea selections. I had the Green Earlgrey which was excellent. My hubby tried Mango tea, I took a sip and foud out that it was aromatic. We ordered the Afternoon Tea set, everything was quite small. The sandwiches were yummy. The scones were ok (I've had better). The tiny cakes were way too sweet. It was a little bit pricey for what we got, $32. But the service was great and we love the atmosphere. We probably be back. read more

My sisters and I started a tradition of having afternoon tea together at Christmas time and this year we went to The House of Commons. We all selected different teas and each of us really liked our selections. I like the atmosphere - it's small but cozy - and the two times I have come to The House of Commons, I have had excellent service. On Christmas Eve we were served by DZ and he was very friendly, attentive and had a sense of humor. He made our experience extra special. I plan to return soon for their chicken curry sandwich. To avoid any parking hassles, we took the bus in to Union Station and it was short walk from there. read more

Absolutely a wonderful, intimate experience. From the reservation making with Gail to Jessica's hospitality ( including welcoming an active 4 year old) and the mini cupcake with a candle, the tea-house was the perfect place to have a little birthday celebration. We had High Tea yesterday for our women's group's 40th anniversary, and it was just PERFECT! Jessica the owner was so helpful through all the planning, down to the flowers on the tables and the seating arrangements. All 35 women in attendance raved about the amazing finger sandwiches (curried chicken salad was our table favorite), delicious scones and sweets, and the helpful and attentive staff. Servers Mark and Jessie went out of their way to take care of us, and to make our special event fabulous, including finding a ladder so our photographer could take a group photo! Okay, despite the hopes of some reviewers, House of Commons doesn't try to be Buckingham Palace. That said, my family, friends and I dig the tea, the atmosphere and the food.. Jessica keeps a huge selection of teas and always has interesting iced teas available. The sandwiches are delicious and huge--the soups and salads are great. The tea room is bright and welcoming. When I'm downtown with a multi-generational group, House of Commons is a logical choice because there's something for everyone. My borther-in-law, who's in construction, is addicted to the place, but that's a whole 'nother review. read more

This place is so cute!! I took my daughters there for a tea party. The tea is excellent. The sandwiches were yummy, the little desserts were adorable and tasty and the wait staff was so nice. I have always loved this little spot, tucked away on Platte St. The cookies and the scones are amazing - always spot on. I really love their sandwiches too - but that might just be because I'm a huge propenent of cucumber and cream cheese. The service has always been perfect - just the right amount of attention without being invasive. read more

The tea here is fabulous, however the reason for my 1 star rating isn't their product but rather their attitude. My boyfriend and I stopped in to buy a bag of their amazing vanilla tea on a nice Sunday afternoon and were not given the warmest of welcomes. Sure, we dress differently but we were dressed very nice, nicer than the other patrons even. Both patrons and staff were disappointingly rude to us and when I asked for my flavor of tea I was told they were out of stock. I felt like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman being told she couldn't be helped in the shops on Rodeo Drive. Whether or not they are actually out of the tea or if it was their way of asking me to leave I'm not sure but either way I will not return. And nor will my many friends I send here on a regular basis. Too bad that these snobs cannot overcome differences in people and serve the nice, respectable people in all black clothing the same as the polo shirt clad crowd. :-/ read more

I have been a fan of the House of Commons every since Westword rated it as the Best Tea House in Denver a few years ago. We live south of Belleview Avenue, but we go to the House of Commons at least twice a week -- and when the weather is warm I ride my bike about 20 miles along the bike paths just to sit and have lunch, tea, and a scone. Then I take light rail from Union Station back south. The atmosphere at the House of Commons is so friendly and wonderful. It reminds me of the small tea shops we went to when we were in England. My 13-year-old granddaughter absolutely adores the place and said that she would go every day if she lived in Denver. Beside the great teas and scones, they have wonderful sandwiches, the best quiche, great salads (with a delightful light house dressing), soups, and a variety of pastries. Their uncommon chocolate cake is my husband's favorite (he loves to go there for lunch). And, every once in a while they have a new pastry. My best friend and I are still talking about the chocolate espresso cheesecake from a few weeks ago. I've been to the Brown Palace and other places for tea -- and the House of Commons is simply more authentic, better, and more affordable. I see that one of the reviewers complained that they couldn't get extra scones for free at the House of Commons and they are used to getting those at the Brown Palace. But, the Brown Palace INCLUDES the cost of those extra scones when they price their high tea. They are not free. The Brown Palace is a wonderful place, but the House of Commons is "home" -- very comfortable. Everyone I have taken to it -- and I have taken many, many friends -- has become a regular. I have been to the House of Commons as many times as I can manage in the past 5 or so years, so let's say conservatively 20 times. I have never had anything less than a warm welcome and fabulous tea and food. I noted on one review that someone felt the sandwiches had too much mayonnaise. I have yet to be able to detect mayo, let alone too much on the lovely tea sandwiches. As to the owner and customers being rude, I find that laughable. Each time I have been there, there have been interesting and varied clientele, from grandmothers with their grandchildren, to students with laptops, middle agers, those dressed all in black and a few in football or hockey jerseys and quite often someone at a corner table, immersed in a good book with a pot of tea on the table. The food is first rate, the atmosphere is charming and the staff is welcoming. I have never hesitated to recommend the House of Commons to friends or relatives and they quickly become fans as well. read more

This place is amazing! Granted, you get what you pay for/you pay for what you get (~$25 per person). But man, for a great High Tea experience, I don't know if it gets much better than this (on this side of the Pond)! The staff are friendly and polite. The atmosphere is light and warm. The tea selection is amazing: black, green, herbal, iced. I've only ordered the High Tea; I haven't ordered off the regular menu, so I can't speak to that. But for High Tea, you get bottomless tea, as many flavors as you'd like to try. The crust-less sandwiches are small, but surprisingly filling (I've shown up starving, and never left hungry), and the flavors are inspired -- Irish cheddar with apricot, roast beef with very mild horseradish, a chicken curry that's to die for, and the classic cucumber and cream cheese. The homemade scones are crumbly and delicious, served with traditional lemon curd, REAL Devonshire cream (mmm, buttery goodness!) and raspberry preserves. The shortbread cookies are some of the best I've had, the vanilla cake petit-four is airy and wonderful, and the chocolate cake petit-four is so rich, I almost can't finish it -- definitely save it for last! The service felt relaxed without taking long for the food, and there's no rush to hurry up and move out; leisurely conversations are encouraged. This place is delicious! read more
