We left Hershey Medical Center and drove down Chocolate Avenue looking for a new place to eat on a late Sunday afternoon. We smelled the smoker and followed it to this charming old Victorian home turned restaurant. We were greeted by the owner who explained his restaurant name (His late St. Bernard) and it's concept, farm to table, freshest ingredients, homemade. We sat at the bar as we didn't have a reservation. The bartender explained almost everything on the menu, made suggestions, and he could not have been more charming. My husband and I both ordered the deconstructed plates of on-site smoked meats and two sides. The food was fabulous...all of it. Every last morsel. Best carrots I have ever tasted! I'm came in town to visit from NYC and my date and I wanted to find a burger place near Hershey Chocolate World and I came here because of the great reviews. Yelpers were right-- this place is great. I didn't think I'd find a place around here with organic/ grass-fed burgers and well flavored dishes (no offense to the area). This place gives the neighborhood some flavor. When we walked in the hosts greeted us like we were friends they haven't seen in a long time and the service overall was great. The manager walked to our table so casually to start convo. I asked my date if he knew him, he said no but felt like he should, lol As for the food, we came for happy hour so we got a lot of food. We had sirloin nachos, which were great but could have had more cheese but the great sauce really made up for it. The Parmesan calamari was better than I've had in a while- it was cooked right, crispy, not too oily and it was great with or without the marinara. The Babe wings were perfect. They were grilled so nicely, well flavored, not greasy and the texture was perfect. I also had "The Burger" and I ordered it medium and it had this smoky flavor that made me smile inside. We ordered craft beers that were $4 for happy hour-- my Pennsylvania stout was a great combo with the burger. After eating all the food here tonight, I didn't feel guilty about my portions because everything was fresh and the proteins were all natural. Man I had so much food and I ain't mad about it! This definitely looks like a local hang out but a major plus is that they took us upstairs and they had a playroom for the kids. The kiddos loved playing with the toys. We ordered the smoked wings. They were definitely smoked and very tasty. I also ordered a french onion soup. This is where I had to deduct some points. It was not good. The bread soaked up all the broth. We told the waitress and she took it off the bill. The kiddos ordered mac n cheese. It was made in house; not boxed. It was good not too cheesy just the right amount. I ordered the steak sandwich but they ran out so I ordered a burger. It was good but undercooked. I ordered it med well and it came out med rare. I can eat my burgers med rare but I was really hoping it would have been cooked longer. My husband had a sandwich and he said it was good. We were here for a weekend vacation from NY and ordered take out since out kids fell asleep after a full day at Hersheys Park. We ordered a ribeye and pulled pork. The food was fantastic. The truffle butter was earthy but very tasty and to use A1 on the steak wouldve been an atrocity. And their homemade bbq sauce was one of the best i have ever had to which my kids ate all of the pulled pork sandwich. But what made the meal even more special and fantastic was the host who happened to be the restaurant's general manager. He did not have to be exceptional in offering suggestions or putting giving us other sauces to try their steak or offered drinks. I dont write many reviews but both my husband and i felt that it was more than warranted. If we are ever in Hersheys again, we would definitely make it a dine in meal. My boyfriend and I were visiting Hershey from NY and were looking for a less touristy place to eat for dinner, and boy were we glad to find Babes! The service was fantastic, and the food matched that. The babes fries were amazing, adding the pulled pork is a must! The actual pork was amazing which we were thankful for after some not so great pulled pork we had in a more touristy spot in Hershey the day before. The chicken au jus sandwich was also great! I got Parmesan Herb Orzo instead of French fries as the side...let me just say I think I'm going to have dreams about that orzo it was sooooo good!! I saw a few reviews say they thought it was overpriced, however we were gladly told by our server that they are a "farm to table" type restaurant that takes pride in where their ingredients come from, so considering that and considering we thought the food was amazing, I think the prices were extremely fair. read more

I rarely review anything. I'm making an exception for Babe's Grill House for all of the right reasons. We were in the area from out of town for a long weekend and stopped in for dinner on a busy (holiday) Friday night... with our four-year-old. Even when we said we didn't have a reservation, we were warmly greeted and our son was given crayons and coloring paper while we waited. The staff readied a table for us faster than anticipated and specifically sat us away from loud crowds. And not only that, it was in a section of the restaurant (which had an elevator for those curious about accessibility) that had... a fully stocked children's play room. Never did a restaurant make us feel so welcome. Why doesn't every "family-friendly" place think of this? It was almost a bonus that my mushroom truffle burger was stellar and cooked exactly as ordered, or that our son even liked the green beans that came with his chicken. The staff let us take our time ordering and eating, checked in frequently, and made conversation with us. And because this section of the restaurant only has two tables that are both purposely for families with young children, we didn't have to worry about our kind-of-cranky small human being, well, himself. So grateful that a place like Babe's exists and for staff who can say "I got you" to tired parents without even saying it. read more

First of, this place is expensive for a small town in PA, I'm from New York City and I had to blink 3 times to believe the price I saw on the menu. The plain nacho is $11 and to add pork they charge $7, which we ordered because hubby loves him some pulled pork nacho whenever he sees it on the menu. Let me just say we had way better pulled pork nacho with way bigger portion in way nicer restaurant with way less money in NY. I ordered half rack of rib, and the best part of the rib is the peach BBQ sauce, it's really yummy so you can almost overlook the dried rib. For the 2 sides I had the sauté Brussels sprouts which is the other good thing on the plate; I also had the baby carrot which is bland and mushy, almost like a baby food as opposed to sweet and crunchy as most places prepare it. Hubby ordered the half portion of lobster mac and cheese and my oh my, it's straight out of the Kraft box, like seriously, I've never seen any restaurant made mac n cheese using elbow pasta soaked in watery velveeta sauce. I'd give it 4 1/2 if I could have. I'm an out-of-towner on business, so I'm always looking for something other than the known burger/pizza joints. Nice setting in an old house. Food was really good. Had the crab cake plate. You get 2 sides with it instead of 1 side with the sandwich. Would say, that the cake could have been a smidge larger.for the price, but quality was excellent. The manager / owner was extremely friendly to us even though we came in a bit near closing time - we kept it simple and had the wings with Cajun dry rub and they were some of the best I've ever had. Everything else we had was also good. They also have a nice selection of high end bourbon which was bonus points for me - and the head bartender is extremely knowledgeable about bourbon and had a nice conversation with him. I was lucky enough to be introduced to Babe's about 5 years ago by a friend. My wife and I have since made this our go-to place when we have a special occasion or random date night. We would certainly visit more often but it is about a 35 minute drive for us. I have forced myself to try something new every time and have yet to be disappointed. The menu is frequently updated with new entrees and appetizers to try, along with signature cocktails. We got there, got a high top near the bar, and the next four hours we felt like we were surrounded by family. Wow is all I can say...wow. How often are you treated outside by the owner (who ran from the front patio to the back parking lot to show us that there was a parking spot). He told us all about the sourcing for his food and his belief in getting local foods. The atmosphere was super cute. The food was bananas. We got the mushroom flat bread, cheese steaks, and Cuban. This place is truly a 5 star spot in my book. The staff is amazingly friendly and warm. The food is unique and well executed. The menu has great options. And everything I ordered was deliscious as expected. I couldn't decide between the ribs or the chicken. I am only in town for a couple nights and wanted to have them both. I was excited when I saw they offered an option to chose up to 3 things. I got the half chicken and ribs. I cant describe how great it tasted. And it was cooked perfectly. Alot of places overcook chicken but they cooked it perfectly juicy. Oh, and the mushroom risotto was PERFECT! Wish there was a place like this next to my house. By the way, creme brulee is my favorite desert and I was super happy to see it was a menu option. Especially because it's a bbq place. You dont see risotto or crem brulee at BBQ places around where I live. I think this is a wonderful place with very nice people. The kind gentleman behind the bar served me. I believe his name was Lucas or Luke. I cant remember but he was especially delightful to meet. He really knows how to treat customers. Everybody at the bar loved him too. Arrived for lunch on a dreary Saturday around 12:30 and entered around back as the patio area appeared closed. That was really the only downside but rain was in the forecast so it made sense. We were greeted by a hostess who sat us near the bar area. Very quaint place with lots of charm and I noticed an elevator up to a second level (which I didn't go up to see). The bar was comfy but got a little crowded as parents of a baseball team came in to drink and eat. Food was very satisfying and we were waited on immediately by Lorrie who brought out appetizers quickly - Buffalo wings and and Babe's Fries with Pulled Pork - both delicious! The wings were thick, juicy and smoky! NOT your BWW's! The fries were outstanding as well. My son and husband ordered the smoked brisket with fries ($17) and I had the smoked porkie ($15) which was fantastic- slightly sweet, nice slaw (but not too much) and served on a huge, warm ciabatta roll. The sweet potato waffle fries were thin and had the best texture - slightly chewy and very satisfying. It was a very generous serving. A bit pricey but we were in Hershey visiting our son so we splurged for lunch. Owner greeted us and introduced himself and was very friendly. Will go back again, for sure! read more

I can't believe that my food was from the same restaurant as the other reviews, but it most certainly was. Maybe it was our mistake for ordering take out, but I could not have been more disappointed. Both kid's dishes were overpriced and my 5 year old wouldn't even touch the Kid's flatbread. He's not a picky eater and I don't blame him. To describe the smell of the red sauce as "sour" would be complimentary. And the Mac N' Cheese is just Kraft out of the box, precooked and microwaved to serve. Nothing home-made about either item. Not only did they prepare the wrong style of burger for my wife, they included meat after I had clearly stated three times while ordering, "portabella mushroom only." I ordered only appetizers for myself, and both the calamari and the arancini were both clearly prepackaged, frozen products (totaling $17.00 for both) It is disappointing to find yet another restaurant that presents itself as making hand crafted food while it's obvious that most of their items are directly from the back of a Sysco truck. This was a meal that could have been prepared for 20% of the cost by visiting the frozen section of the local grocery store (which we will do the next time we crave terrible frozen food.) The staff was not rude, but at best ambivalent. The atmosphere inside was busy and loud, but worse was outside where several young adults were smoking and obviously intoxicated. Their loud and vulgar conversation could be heard through the entire parking lot. To me, this demonstrated the lack of control that the owners have over their facility and certainly belies the "kid friendly" atmosphere that they put forth. Two thumbs down. read more

Tonight hubby and I decided to try something new for date night. Thanks to Yelp we ended up at Babes. We had a little bit of a wait - like 20-30 minutes but totally understandable for a Friday night. Everyone was friendly and we noticed the owner walking around chatting which was nice. The service was excellent and our server was so friendly. I had the brisket sandwich which was excellent. The meat could have been a bit more tender but the flavor was really great. The hand cut fries are also great. My hubby had the barn burger which has every meat under the sun. He said it was great and could only finish half. It was missing the onions but he only realized that later. We finished our meal off with the homemade snickers cheesecake which was definitely the highlight. It was absolutely amazing.
