Came in here on a whim tonight wanting to try something different. As soon as I walked in I was warmly welcomed by an older man and his wife. I think there are two dining spaces - a smaller one in the front that was quiet and he families and couples there, and then what appeared to be a larger room for larger parties. People were bringing their own beer and it sounded like they were having a great time! Anyway, I ordered the banh xeo and it was DELICIOUS! Not too thin, served with lots of sprouts and fresh mint & lettuce. My water was refilled twice and the owner checked up on every single table there. My gf wanted the crab curry so we realized the place opened at 11 and we were in town and decided to try it out. Amazing that this place has a pretty large lot (like 8 spaces) behind the bldg. total mom and pop shop but ample seating. We were the first ones in and there were a ton of small flies/gnats on the table. They probably just hadn't wiped it down yet, but I figured I would note it. They wiped it down shortly after we sat. We started with the steamed dumplings. I found the chewy wrapper to be amazing texture. I didn't like the fishy filling. My gf felt opposite. Haha. I ordered the spicy grilled beef ribs. All I could taste was oil. I couldn't eat them so I got a shrimp summer roll and boxed up the ribs. The roll was yummy. Now for the crab curry we went for...my gf said it was mediocre. Oh my gosh, how have I never been here before?! This place has sweet pho.. But what you need to come here for is the grilled beef wrapped in lot leaf! Tender beef is grilled in a lot lead, you're given rice paper wraps (and hot water) to soften the rice paper, and then you wrap the beef with your fillings (rice noodles, cucumbers, veggie mix, peanuts, mint leaves, lettuce) and dip it in a sweet sauce. Pros: always great, friendly, and prompt service; tasty pho Cons: always feel like MSG overload post-meal; not many pho options; sometimes the staff can disappear into the kitchen for extended periods of time Pho is available either as beef, chicken, seafood, or combination in small or large sizes. 3.5 Stars. Little hole in the wall not far from the airport. Ate here one evening with 2 colleagues after a long day at work. We started with the Spring Rolls and a Vietnamese crepe. Spring rolls were light and flavorful. Crepe was very interesting and also light and crispy. A mix of meat and shrimp with lots of bean sprouts. I had a bowl of Pho for my meal, which was excellent. One co-worker had the same, and the other had a bowl of seasoned grilled chicken over vermicelli and veggies. Out tab came out to under $50! Check em' out if you like or are interested in Vietnamese. I love this Vietnamese restaurant. There are many Vietnamese restaurants in Honolulu. However, some of them are not that clean and workers are not kind at all. This restaurant is different. This restaurant is clean and the person, who looks like a owner, at the front is so nice. For food, I strongly recommend their crap curry. It is very tasty, and you can actually smell a crap from the curry. You can feel the curry can be pricey, but the amount of curry you will get is huge. Thus, it turns out not that expensive. I personally like Vietnamese food so this was a real treat, their menu is quite extensive and made the decision on what to eat even harder. The standouts are: Spring rolls: Served with vermicelli, lettuce, and mint for wrapping, these are super light and crisp almost melt in your mouth. I know you think you know what a spring roll is, but you have to try these. Unchoi: Perfection in a delicious, impossible-to-replicate sauce. They somehow get it just right without overcooking. This is the first place that I've vowed to try a new dish on almost every visit - sometimes you find a "new" dish and have to do a repeat! Its like they can't go wrong with anything you pick. The Oriental Basa is AMAZING ~ The PHO is SAVORY ~ The spring rolls with the HOMEMADE light spicy peanut sauce is DECADENT ~ (just the favorites I can think of in the moment). This is the first Vietnamese restaurant that goes BEYOND pho. Pho there is now a side dish (not at all a diminishment to the taste, but a must have) item while the main dish is usually a new pick. The wings and curry were excellent! If you don't have a big appetite, the small portion of Crabmeat Curry is enough for two people. The roll of bread compliments the dish. It was a Friday night, 7:30-8:00pm ish. My 9yr old son had his heart set on garlic shrimp and I was not about to disappoint. After driving around for 30 mins, I remembered this cute little Vietnamese restaurant that served up this killer garlic shrimp with sliced jalapeño peppers. I must say, I don't know about you but I and we ( my family) prefer our shrimp with the heads on. Well this place had their shrimps deep fried, crispy, good sized with every bit as much garlicky yumminess one single shrimp can handle. But enough about the shrimp! We also ordered this delectable braised prawn dish that was simmered in this incredible sauce that I suspect was made from the "prawn butter" and I'm not talking about the dairy kind. It was finger likin good, we poured this spicy sauce over our rice. Another stand out was this beef stew ish kinda dish. Not sure if it was a stew, more like a soup, red but not tomatoey with fragrant spices and herbs. We also ordered roll-ur-own grilled pork wraps with was meh but it came with a huge plate of Vietnamese veggies. On top of all that, we even ordered a big bowl of beef Pho and even the flavor of their soup was flavorful, not watery or luke warm by any means. They have many more items in their menu that you wouldn't find at some everyday run of the mill pho factory restaurant. The owner was totally cool, service was good, prices not bad, place was clean, well lit and a good amount of patrons dining without having to wait. Expensive and crappy spring roll. A cute little place, kept very clean and the owner guy is a very well groomed guy with nice manners. I ordered the Combination BBQ pork and spring roll vermicelli (Bun). It looked great with lots of peanuts crushed on top, and a good size bowl of food. However, the spring roll tasted kinda funky. Some kind of strange flavor I couldn't place. I found myself not wanting to eat a piece by itself, but having to mix it with bites of the other stuff in the bowl because it tased weird. I was craving for Vietnamese food and decided to check out this busy place. I was a bit surprised to see a lot of non-Vietnamese customers here which is nice, but I think the restaurant may have catered the taste to them rather than Vietnamese. For example: -Their bun bo hue does not have congealed pig blood--what!! Even ethnic Chinese Vietnamese add pig's blood in their bun Bo hue! I was saddened no to be able to find it as the pig blood is part of the dishes signature ingredients. -their spring rolls do not have any other vegetables besides the lettuce leaves. I was hoping for some pickled carrots to go along with my awesome spring rolls but I was disappointed :( To be fair, the customer service is one of the best at an Asian restaurant. The owner was talkative and friendly, making sure everything was okay. He was concerned when he realized that our table was wobbly, until we told him we are totally fine with that. I went to Bac Nam a few weeks ago for the second time and again I love the food there! Had the spring rolls to start, always hot and delicious! Then it was followed by the beef curry with the meat so soft, the garlic butter unchoi and the garlic chicken wings. I'm not a huge fan of vietnamese food like pho but this place is really good! The service was slow when the older man (I think the owner?) was the waiter, but the young waiter is very friendly and quick :) I love the spring rolls. Its perfectly crispy and I like the crab pho noodle. You could tell they use real crab because I expected imitation crab. It adds a sweet taste to the broth. What they are known for is their crab meat curry which is really good too. It's probably the priciest thing on their menu but it is worth trying. I got it with rice but I think I'll try it with french bread next time. All the food seems really good so I want to try other things next time. read more

This place has got to have the best Beef Stew noodle soup. They serve their soups piping hot so when you add the veggies, it cools off just right, not luke warn, still hot. The restaurant was recently renovated to seat more people. In the past, you sometimes waited in line outside. The only thing I can suggest is they learn their regular customer's names. I've been their customer for 3 yrs and they still call me sir but they know my regular order by heart. All I need to say is, "same ting." Great place to eat. Ordered: -pho combination -vegetable pho -deep fried spring rolls -Thai tea 1) spring rolls was crispy but inside was soggy, and combination of anything you can't even describe. The only thing that made it edible to chew and get my money worth was the sauce that came with it. 2) veggie pho: white sticky noodle (not the regular translucent white noodles), and 3 pieces of broccoli, and couple pieces of soggy chopped off cabbage---the only thing that made it vegetable pho. Even the soup has the same soup base taste that my bf ordered (pho combination), it was not a vegetable soup base at all! BOTH OF OUR PHO SOUP BASE TASTED LIKE BOILED WATER MIXED WITH SHOYU, ONION, AND OIL!! I've tried -Green Papaya, (kalihi) -Mix Plate, (kalihi) -Ha Long Pho Noddle House (kalihi) -Pho My Lien (pearl ridge) -Pho 777 (mccully) -Pho Saigon (kapiolani) And they all have almost the same soup base, some are better than others but all met my satisfaction. Coming to this place was very disappointing! I was more disappointed to myself for trying another Pho place I was not familiar with! In the end, the only thing my bf ate was his meat from his (pho combination), and shared it with me, because I too only picked the broccoli / and some soggy chopped off cabbage.
