2.5 stars. This spot is more of a takeout establishment. We were the only ones sitting in the dining area consisting of stereotypical "country" themed decor complete with piped in country music. I ordered a 1/4 chicken entree which came with two sides and choice of bread. Honestly it seemed like a normal chicken with BBQ sauce poured on top. I have had better. To top it off, the majority of it seemed inedible. I ordered the banana bread - it definitely was a box mix and not very palatable. The Mac & cheese seemed like it was one of those box mix types. Oh man...I have been wanting to try this place for so long! Finally got in here and was surprised to see it empty. I was seated quickly, but then ignored for quite awhile. Ordered a lunch special and it came out fast. Presentation was poor. Tri-tip was cold and tasteless. Salad was meh. Bread was served warm but the butter was frozen. (Why?!) Then patiently waited for the check for almost 30 minutes. Then...my stomach...and I spent the next 20 minutes in their bathroom. Went there today and was very different. #1 st louis ribs were still excellent. #2 coleslaw was very good. #3 texas potato skins seemed to be at least a day old, not freshly baked and fluffy like they used to be. #4 bread pudding was just a small portion of spiced bread and very dry. Apparently, the original owners sold this restaurant recently...I hate to give bad reviews and rarely do. I dined here recently and it's simply not the same anymore. The meat itself wasn't bad, but, the sides were not what I was (along with my family) expecting from prior visits. The cornbread had no flavor and was tough, the baked beans were not even cooked well and had no seasoning. The employee/possible new owner was very nice and responsive and they now serve a few Asian dishes. I should have tried those instead, as I absolutely love Asian food. The restaurant is right off Highway 50 in Shingle Springs. It's a bit of a drive from Sacramento, about 25-35 minutes depending on traffic. The dining room is clean and reasonably spacious for a small restaurant. My buddy and I went for lunch as we continue our quest to find the best brisket in town. We were the only ones dining in, though they were doing a brisk takeout business. We were promptly greeted and the staff person answered all our questions about the menu. I had the two meat plate with brisket and pork ribs. My two sides were the chili and the coleslaw. My buddy felt like beef ribs, so he ordered the two bone plate with fries and coleslaw. We each had a piece of cornbread with our meal. The meats were perfectly cooked, though they could use a little more smoke. I typically don't like really spicy food but their meat could use a little stronger rub. The portions were reasonably sized for the price and were neither too fatty nor too lean. I really enjoyed the coleslaw, eating both mine and my friend's. It had a nice sweetness without being overly sweet. The cornbread was good and paired well with the meal. The chili has brisket in it and was good as well. My friend is a bit of a French fry snob and he liked how they make theirs, with a crinkle cut and a nice crunch. I'm at the age where a bathroom break occurs more often than I would like; theirs was clean and well stocked. The parking lot is quite large and we were able to find a space in the shade. read more

The menu is relatively the same with some new additions as fried chicken, tri tip noddle soup, vegetable egg rolls, fried shrimp, and crab wontons. They don't serve alcohol. I forgot to ask if that's a temporary situation. Anyways I ordered the lean brisket plate, it tasted the same as before. Delicious! Hubs ordered his go to favorite, sausage sandwich. No complaints. The BBQ meats are dry smoked with house made sauce served on the side. The food is simple old school classics; simply yummy. No groundbreaking fusion BBQ here or IG backdrops. The restaurant is in a modest location. I ordered the Lone Ranger plate of lean brisket. It came with choice of bread, two sides, and a dessert. $16.25. All the meats here are dry smoked Central Texas style with sauce served on the side. Lean brisket is tricky to smoke without drying it out. But they did it right. My cut of lean brisket was moist and fork shreddable tender. The banana bread recipe changed a bit. It now has the texture and look of a cake with a stronger banana flavor. It wasn't bad tasting just different. I prefer the previous version. Hey, but hubs preferred the newer version. It's moister and airy with more of a banana taste. My favorite must have side dish here is the brisket chili. That tasted the same... still darn delicious. It's topped with cheese and onions. My all time favorite side while eating BBQ is potato salad. But their potato salad still tastes the same. They play it safe and keep the flavors muted. My go to dessert here is the banana pudding. I was hoping that recipe didn't change. Glory be, it didn't. Still fresh house made pudding with real bananas in it, topped with whipped cream, and served with nilla wafers. It's a simple dessert but oh so simply yummy. For my lactose intolerant friends out there... FYI yes it's made with dairy. Having been a long time customer, I knew that I needed to be open minded while dining under new ownership. Change is not always bad... just different, as in this case. Solid 3.5 rating. read more

After reading the bad reviews, I felt like I had to give my opinion. We ordered To-go about a month ago. I've had the other two bbq places around here, and honestly, meh. So we gave this place a shot. Omgosh. I have been craving the brisket and the ribs, (best I have ever had), ever since. Everything was done to perfection. The sauces were amazing and I would recommend definitely trying it out. Please don't listen to people who give bad reviews because their dog couldn't come in the restaurant. I can almost guarantee it wasn't a service dog. People with REAL service animals always have what they need when entering a food establishment. And oh no! They ran out of baked potatoes? We stopped here during a long drive. After calling ahead to ensure they had meats on hand (as our favorite place Hog Wild had sold out), we stoped in. Well it was a bit of a wait for our order to be taken and then a long wait after that. After half an hour we still had nothing to eat so I asked how long until the food would be ready. Answer? At least 20 more minutes for a total of nearly an hour. So we left! It wasn't even very busy inside although the restaurant seemed to be focused on take-out orders! I was so mad -- we didn't have all day and we weren't warned about the super long wait! How hard is it to put ALREADY COOKED meats and sides on a plate? Right? It should be like 5 minutes at most BBQ joints! However I added a couple stars (it was going to be 1 star) because they kindly returned a metal straw that was accidentally left behind when we walked out. That was nice. Decor is a bit silly, with cheesy-jokey (tacky) signs. But that doesn't matter because I can't recommend the place unless you like long waits read more

We thought it might be good. The new owners are Chinese and specialize in Chinese food. I love bbq and I love Chinese food but do not mix. The quality and taste of the food has gone down hill. I always got the juicy tri-tip sandwich. But now it's called moist tri tip sandwich. unfortunately, it has a lack of flavor and reading moist just doesn't make it sound good. We also decided to try the tri tip soup. It was horrible. Plane broth with a few slices of tri tip on top. Was not worth the money. Now to talk about the actual business. The Only I caucasian woman was the server. The two Asian owners, one was the cook and one was someone who put the food together. The server was amazing and super nice. She said let me get the owner for you because I'm sure they would love your feedback. When we got the owner she did not care about our feedback. We were not mean. We just said that it was lack of spices. The soup would have been better if maybe they cooked the tri-tip and threw all the juices into the soup. Maybe something else other than the broth. Now it's down-right bad bbq with only four choices for beer: corona, heineken, bud, and bud light. The ribs, brisket, and pulled pork were overly salty with no real seasoning to speak of. Haven't been here for many years, have wanted to but reviews looked like things had declined, so I hesitated. Finally went and tried it to see for myself. The verdict, not bad - not great. Definitely not as good as my past visits. I will say that they had some very unique items, which sound delicious, service was good but a little slow, and overall price was very fair. The downside was that the food was just average. We got the all-time BBQ standard, brisket. Was definitely good, though nothing to rave about. Recommendation: get things more smokey and flavorful. Lastly the inside needs some love, saw a few cobwebs under chairs, which gave an impression of lack of care. Overall, I would go again but not craving it. Time will tell. read more

I stopped with my friends for some BBQ on the way out to Tahoe. It was easy getting to and from this place from the freeway. I got the Brisket Sandwich with Mac & Cheese. The mac and cheese was gooey and cheesy, with perfectly soft pasta. The lean brisket the perfect texture. Pickles, onions, and sauce on the side makes it feel like a real traditional Texas restaurant. I also finished the the bread pudding. We ordered Back Forty Texas BBQ on Mother's Day 2023. We have not eaten there or ordered in years; at least not since before the pandemic. I ordered brisket. My better half ordered sausage. I asked for coleslaw for BOTH my sides. My spouse asked for mashed potatoes. He received potato salad. I love coleslaw so I was happy to have both sides of slaw. Sadly they were spoiled. I am speaking "food poisoning" spoiled. I had to spit my coleslaw out of my mouth. It tasted as bad as it smelled. What a disappointment. My brisket, however, was good. My husband said of his sausage "I just spent $60.00 on hot dogs." He ate a bit of his second side - the coleslaw, so he maybe he will be ill later. That will be really unfortunate as he has a hernia. Well folks with great disappointment, I have to say that their St. Louis pork ribs were terribly dry. In fact they are so dry I had to chew and chew and chew and then chew some more. Not the best, but if you're desperate for ribs, they'll do. Your better off driving up to Hog Wild in Placerville. However, My wife ordered the Caesar salad with chicken and she said it was terrific.
