Also got the BLT on a croissant. Upcharge for the croissant. Both came with one piece of spinach and half a cherry tomato on the side...odd choice lol. But I guess it's their garnish. Tucked away just off the sidewalk, Buckatown Coffee Parlour is an aesthetically beautiful hidden gem. I actually rolled right past it several times before finally calling for directions. They happily guided me in, and I'm glad they did. The moment I entered, the space felt soft, spacious, and serene. Warm, mellow tones paired beautifully with jazzy Afrocentric cutout art and paintings lining the walls, while oversized sofas invited guests to slow down and stay awhile. The décor is simple yet intentional, much like the café's handwritten chalkboard menu featuring a thoughtfully curated selection of reasonably priced baked goods, beverages, and sandwiches. For breakfast, I ordered the Groovy Bowl without the bacon: eggs, creamy grits, toast, chamomile tea, and orange juice. Every bite was delicious, made even better by the soulful soundtrack gently floating through the café. My only suggestion would be to make condiments a little more visible. I ordered the salmon bagel with egg and the French toast. It was good but it was not amazing. It was a nice toasted bagel with salmon cream cheese and capers but didn't taste that fresh. I do think it was fairly priced though. The French toast was not my favorite as $11 for two pieces is a lot. The cafe itself is a good hang out or study spot with lots of places to sit and eat at. That being said, I got their iced miel latte and it was delicious. They have a rewards program for their regulars, and I intend to become one. The staff are friendly and craft the coffees with care to ensure perfection. The space magnificent. This is one of my favorite coffee shops in the city. It's a convenient location, and the staff is friendly no matter what's going on. I usually get an iced or hot mocha latte and the coffee is always smooth. Even when it's delivered, the temps are perfect. I can't skip the snacks here! The crawfish melt is my go-to, along with the cranberry cream cheese scone. I've enjoyed the sweet potato scone, too, and the muffins. The turkey and egg sandwich is a regular brunch choice. I tried the raspberry grilled cheese but it was too much of the sweet raspy jam for me. Sometimes they run out of items, but they're always great with substituting. One word: PERFECTO It is the CUTEST, most welcoming coffee shop I have been to in a long time. It displays local art and embodies the NOLA culture. This was my first time coming to this coffee shop while visiting. It was my husband, mom, aunts and me. We ordered 3 small king cake lattes, a vanilla cortado and crawfish quiche. Each drink and the quiche was made with love. I wish I could remember the man's name that helped us. He was patient with us and really helped us find the best drink for our palettes. There is a "lounge area" with couches that allows for you to get comfy while you enjoy your drinks and food. On the table in the lounging area, there are chit chat cards that encourage some fun dialogue. There is a station that offers patrons to grab free books and to leave books. Last stop before heading off to the airport, I had to get some work done before I take off so I found a low key coffee shop to sit at and partake in some pastries while I drained their wifi. Great location, close to the hustle and bustle of the city. Plenty of space inside with the option of outdoor seating as well. The decor inside is very reminiscent of the entire city, very jazz influenced. Has paintings and murals inside, very easy on the eyes. Service was on point, the cashier was pleasant and made my cappuccino well. I placed my food order and received it shortly after. Seems like there were only two people working and they had a brunch party inside but they were extremely accommodating. I had the crawfish quiche with my cappuccino, it was very good. Service was the absolute worst we've experienced during our stay in NOLA--it was a huge record scratch to the vibes the city has given us throughout our visit! The employee working Monday 5/4 at 1pm was understandably flustered for being the only employee there but her lack of verbal filter and displaced aggression was mind-blowing. She visibly rolled her eyes at my husband when he had a question about a sandwich he wanted to order but we still tipped her because she was on her own. Our food was extremely delayed (more than 30 minutes)--seemed strange when half the order just needed to be pulled from the display case and countless coffee orders were filled after ours was put in. It wasn't a big deal at first, but when 30 minutes had passed and by then we were in a hurry to start a tour that we'd scheduled, we started getting antsy about paying for food we likely weren't going to get in time. The breaking point was when she brought our food to the table, asked if I needed a straw, I said "yes please" quickly, and as she walked away, muttered loudly "you don't need to be rude." Surely, I'd misheard. When she brought out the rest of the order, I asked "out of curiosity, did you say "you don't need to be rude" As you were leaving? She unleashed. I could likely respect that reaction if her frustration was aimed at her situation--I'd have completely empathized. But her reaction was aimed at us. After being incredibly condescending in reminding us that we weren't her only customers and she was on her own (no apologies for the 30 minute wait for a chai pudding and spinach quiche in the fridge and a coffee and sandwich...), she immediately went on to say we'd been rude since the minute we walked in and she owed us nothing. It was difficult to get a word in. All in all, employees can absolutely feel flustered when on their own in food service. I'm thinking that she'd been set off before we even came into the shop. It was also pretty clear that she got on the defensive and on a roll when I asked her for clarification if she'd called me rude. However, no matter how much my initial intention was to be understanding, her complete lack of professionalism and tact was inexcusable (especially since our exchange would have likely been pretty dry and forgettable if she herself hadn't been passive aggressive and quietly-loudly called me rude because I "didn't let her finish her question about bringing out a straw" before answering "yes please".) I think after some experience with customers who are truly rude and a little bit of a growth mentality, employees like her can learn to become more professional in their job. It was a shame, though, because the atmosphere was welcoming and the coffee was delicious. But nothing about the experience could ever erase how Backatown Coffee Parlour represented itself so negatively through its employees. read more

We had a large group, so we had to wait a bit for our food. The crawfish melt with pepper jack was really good filled with lots of flavor. After a few bites, it became very salty but quickly fixed with hot sauce. The coffee was nice a and strong. Sooooo good! We loved this place so much we visited twice during our trip. The service was excellent and the coffee and food top notch. Delicious coffee and pastries! I was in New Orleans for the weekend with friends and wanted to go for a walk and grab coffee. Having visited NoLa several times before, I have a few go-to spots but decided to do a search for a new place to try. I stumbled across Backatown and was happy to see it's black-owned which made me more thrilled to try it. For the food, I got the Miel Latte with a crawfish quiche and a strawberry almond scone. Everything was delicious! Now on to the service. The weather was nice and I needed some fresh air so I walked. Upon arriving, the line was pretty long but I didn't think it would take long to order. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I waited for 20-25 minutes to order and another 15-20 minutes to get my food which was less than ideal. The environment is set up for hanging out with a group with several open seating spaces in the center and tables and chairs surrounding. The windows facing the street brings in a lot of natural light and gives an airy, open feeling. Having arrived and made it to the front of the line, I was ready to order, but was told to wait for a minute. The time exceeded five minutes, during which both of the people working vigorously to prepare someone's online order while ignoring myself and the line of customers actually in front of them. The optics were not good, and they needed to be better staffed as I wouldn't call my visit a peak rush time. When someone else finally came out from the back to take my order, I tried to order the chia pudding, which they didn't have, then tried to order a banana nut coffee cake, which it sure looked like they did have a couple of, but I was told they did not. Perhaps more online orderers had jumped in front of me? Not clear. I was told they didn't really have any of their vegan breakfast options, which even as a non-vegan I was pretty disappointed by. I ended up just getting a chai latte. At least my chai arrived quickly, but when it did, it just didn't have a ton of flavor of either spice or tea, leaving me to wonder why on earth I went here and bypassed any number of other places which, unlike this one, might actually want my business. EDIT: Just to respond to the owner's comments, flavor in a chai doesn't just come from sugar, and what I'm saying is that the chai lacked flavor. I would consider cafes of this ilk to have an expectation of fast service by default. Many customers want and expect coffee or other breakfast items in a hurry. And yes, I recognize that the fact that the place was short-staffed and short on supplies occurs in a context of broader economic circumstances in this country. I don't go looking for chances to write negative reviews, and there could hardly be a greater supporter of small business than I over these past couple of years; the proof is in the reviews. Having said that, this place did not meet my expectations compared to other similar places dealing with similar circumstances. Perhaps they'll have better days, but the day I visited they earned a poor review. The fact that they've chosen snark rather than taking responsibility for providing an unsatisfactory customer experience is a problem in itself. read more
