We stopped in for lunch after a short wine tour of two of the local cellars. Upon entering my stomach started to growl due to the smoked aroma outside and inside the restaurant, it smelled SO good. They had a pretty decent selection of combos and single plates, but what I was craving were burnt ends... I asked if they sold them and to my amazement, THEY DID!! So I ordered the single meat burnt ends combo that comes with two sides, cheesy beans and cream corn. The wife ordered a brisket sandwich (shredded) with Mac and cheese. The burnt ends were freshly cut from the brisket as i watched, they were very delicious, tender with a little pepper kick, the cheesy beans were terrific and the cream corn wasn't to bad. I picked up a small helping of beans at the condiments counter and they were pretty tasty. The wife (shredded) brisket sandwich was more like ground brisket vs shredded, she wasn't to please but said it tasted ok once she added their BBQ sauce. She did enjoy the Mac n Cheese though. All in all this place has some descent TX BBQ for a decent price. I suggest that they shreds their brisket vs grind. read more

Nice place to eat Sunday lunch with family visiting from out of town. The brisket, tri-tip and sausage were good. Their sides are very traditional which is not bad. The only quibble - we got the last 2 of the peach cobblers. Not good. We should have passed. Their desserts must be good because they were mostly out of them when we got to ordering them. Overall, good food and location. The people in the queue were friendly and told us what's good and what to order. One guy said order everything! They're all good! Hands down some of the best bbq we have ever had! I had a chopped brisket and turkey sandwich, while my husband had a three meat plate. The rib meat literally fell off the bone. Absolutely amazing, juicy, perfectly seasoned meat. The complementary beans were also just incredible. Even the desserts were excellent. Came here at 3:50 on a Thursday and they were closed with the lights out and chairs put up. Yelp, google, and the hours on the doors said they were open until 8pm. At the bottom of the doors it said "we may close on any day at any time due to running out of BBQ"... ok, so there were 4 other cars of people that came by while we looked on yelp for another place. They were also surprised that this place was closed. This is honestly a very poor way to run a business and new management is needed if this is such a common issue. If you are running out 4+ hours early, you should be making more to ensure you don't lose out on profits or piss off customers. As a customer, I'm not going to waste my time again on a place that may or may not be open. There is far better BBQ at many other establishments that ensure they don't run out, so this place is not worth the hassle. read more

One of the first BBQ spots I've hit in TX since moving here. Also some of the best smoked meats and BBQ meats I've had anywhere, ever. All round delicious meats that are truly drool worthy from the aroma alone. The sides are also spot on solid as well. The mop sauce and BBQ sauce are unlike any I have had before and I've had many. I saved what was left and used it on dishes the next day and it still took those plates up a notch or two. This is a must stop spot of BBQ is what your game for in Fredericksburg. Gluten free review - Backwoods BBQ was recommended by our hosts at a recent VRBO stay. And it was amazingly good! With Celiac disease, I have to be careful about BBQ because of what some places put in the rub, or the sauce, etc. We walked into Backwoods and upon inquiry, were given an enthusiastic welcome and told everything was gluten free -- except the Mac dishes (as expected). Can I just say that the Turkey, was melt in your mouth goodness! We also tried brisket and sausage- both delicious. I had green beans and coleslaw for sides - did not disappoint. (The coleslaw was nice and light, not mayo with a little cabbage in it.) This is on our list to repeat next time we're in Fredericksburg. And if you're gluten free, it's a must! read more

This place looked good from the outside, and smelled good as well, but as soon as we walked in, it went downhill. No one greeted us; so we walked up to the counter. Still no one spoke to us. We walked up to the cash register where an attendant was standing, and she told us we needed to go to the opposite end to order. The meat looked dry and over cooked. It was all wrapped in foil and looked like it had been sitting there. The beef ribs looked monochromatic, and were $50-75 each. The tri tip was tough, and the brisket had no flavor. The Mac & cheese looked good but was very bland. The beans are an odd style of borracho beans. The green beans were the only good thing I had. This is perhaps the greatest BBQ place I have ever been visited. I'm actually proud that it exists in my hometown & I hope they get recognized soon by Texas Monthly or any kind of press since they completely deserve it! I always order the sliced marbled brisket sandwich, & it consistently has the perfect amount of fat & lean. The fat literally melts in your mouth & the bread is perfect. Never have I been to a bbq place where even all the sides tasted immaculate ! I will admit sometimes the coleslaw can taste a bit old, but I hardly get the coleslaw anyways. Bean & Mac n cheese for me! Not to mention the sweet & unsweet tea are to die for. The whole restaurant is a giant mess hall with lots of classic Texas decorum. It really makes you feel like you're in the heart of Texas & I can't tell you enough how that really adds to the whole experience. This place puts all other BBQ restaurants to shame. We tried a few things here. The brisket, the sausage and the pork ribs. The brisket was unexceptional. The pork ribs were very good. The sausage was amazing. Usually sausage at a BBQ place is an afterthought. Something for kids and the unadventurous. The sausage here stole the show. I only tried the regular but I would have tried the jalapeño cheese if I knew the sausage was so outstanding. I'm giving 4 stars for the sausage alone. Barbecue was pretty good, we got brisket lean, you can also choose the moist (which is fattier), sausage, chicken, pork ribs, mac & cheese and beans. The beans are at no charge you also get jalapeños, pickles and onions and two slices of bread each. The sauce is a Vinegar based, thick and is really good. It is barbecue so expect to pay a lot. It is very good BBQ, the staff is friendly and nice. When you come in they will greet you, explain to you how to order, you pick it out then you sit wherever you like. While we were there they were setting up for live music in the evening, apparently they have live music on the weekends with different artist. They even have a comedian that was going to do a bit. The restaurant has a very large open floor plan, a bar with TVs around for sports viewing and an outdoor seating area. I do recommend this restaurant and I would come back. read more

Should be 4.5 stars... very good BBQ but not the best in TX. Turkey was very juicy, Mac and cheese was solid but definitely velveeta (not real cheese, which I prefer, but to each their own). Beans had a bit of a kick which was nice. Winner was definitely the brisket baked potato... completely loaded with bacon and brisket. Amazing and I will go back just for this. You order off a line so no waiting, which is nice. Atmosphere is like Black's or Rudy's or any other casual BBQ place. Very confusing line to order. Had our hearts set on baked potatoes with brisket. No potatoes. Maybe cross it off your menu if you don't have them. Portions sizes adequate. 07.01.2022 Food was good not great. Does not compare to Blacks, Pecan Lodge, or the BBQ places in Lockhart. We got the burnt ends, turkey, and pork ribs. The meat was cold, not like refrigerator cold, but not hot like right out the smoker. That inside grill is used for keeping food warm, but it didn't seem to be on. Mac n Cheese is made with processed cheese, not really homemade. The cream corn was sweet but good. The complimentary beans were the only thing that were still pretty warm by the time we got to the table. There does seem to be a lot of locals. As good as it gets. Traveling through Frederickburg at lunch time and looks for the highest rated BBQ in town. Backwoods popped to the top and we bit. Ordered the Tri-tip and Brisket (lean) plates and both were the best. Meat falling off the forks, perfect smoke flavor--what BBQ is all about. Sides of cole slaw, green beans, green beans cheesy - perfect. First time seen pinto beans on the condiment table, nice. Service was good and the business clean and shiny. Sometimes their chicken is dry but chickens just hard to keep in restaurants because it does sit and ruin so if you get it, get it early or ask how fresh it is. The sides are alright. The pinto beans are consistently good. Green beans are great. Good selection of drinks/beer/wine. Brisket is good. Deserts are fabulous.
