Pretty neat atmosphere. Big open space at back of bar which is perfect for Covid. They are taking lots of precautions. The food was good, nothing in particular that stands out as something I have to have again. The fries were delicious, fresh-cut. The service was mediocre. They sat us immediately but for some reason needed to take our name and phone number s if they were going to text when the table was ready. Our waitress wasn't in as big a hurry as us. I came here by myself to kill a little time so I sat at the bar. It was a Saturday afternoon and there was a sign outside saying that they had a feature craft beer for $3. I asked which one it was (it was a pale ale) and I ordered it because that's a pretty good deal! There were nice TVs above the bar. I also ordered a cup of chili which was amazing. It had such a good flavor that it made me wish I had ordered the bowl. The bartenders were attentive and friendly and it had a nice atmosphere. I had more commonly known Backyard Ale House as a destination for a party on late weekend nights, as it turns into somewhat of a college bar after about 10:00pm Friday and Saturday. But after finally coming here during normal hours I discovered it is a great place to grab a bite to eat. The food is fantastic and the beer selection is phenomenal. The menu offers your typical American bar foods... sandwiches, burgers, etc... and a wide array of beers from your everyday pick to a variety of seasonal choices. There is an outdoor patio which is great for the summer. During the winter they actually bring out a tent and space heaters to utilize the patio as the indoor section of the bar/restaurant is rather small. If you like a party, Backyard Ale House is a great destination to visit on Friday and Saturday nights. If you aren't into that scene I would stay away from here after 9:00pm on the weekends. At work we have ordered food from Backyard Ale House for lunch, putting in large orders, and never having any issues. Overall a great restaurant/bar, I highly recommend checking it out. read more

One of the best beer gardens in Lackawanna county. During the summer they open the backyard and it's lively with good food, a variety of beers and drinks, great music, and friendly staff. Highly recommend this place. We came from NJ yesterday to see a show at a place in the area and we came here for dinner and drinks before. THe boneless wings were AMAZING and the burger and fresh cut fries were VERY good. And every single person that worked there was SO nice! Friendly, attentive service. First time here while at school. I loved it! Went with some friends on a Saturday day night. No wait which was great! The food was delicious. The decor was very unique and the music was awesome. I got the eggplant sandwich with fries. It was so good. The bread was nice and crispy and the pesto was a nice touch. Got a side of fries which could have been a little more crispy but the spice was good. Friend also for the eggplant sandwich. She got it with cheese but wished the bread was less croissant vibe. Friend got the Mexicali burger. She said it was very good. She would have liked more guacamole on the burger as well as the pico on the side as it made the bun a little mushy. The fries were delicious. The pickle was floppy but it was nice and sour which we all enjoyed. Friend got the spicy chicken sandwich. It was a little to spicy but very good. Other friend got chicken cheddar BLT. She said it was great. The wait for the food was long, but it was good so that's okay. The silver ware was not study and bent very easily. Came here when picking my daughter up from college for Christmas. I got the sampler and loved it. Servings are huge for a great price. Customer service was amazing we had servers constantly checking in on drinks and making sure food was to our liking and asking if we needed anything. My husband and I usually do take-out and get their boneless buffalo wings. Tonight, we decided to try something new. He ordered their veggie burger with fries and I ordered the mexicali burger (medium-well) with chips, and a bowl of chili for later. Both our burgers had hardly any toppings on them. My burger was pretty burnt, the lettuce was extremely wilted to the point where it had splotchy dark soggy spots on it. They also forgot my chips, and forgot the sour cream on my chili. I am an alumna of the local university and visited this past weekend. I was excited to take my husband and daughter to Backyard Ale House for the patio on a beautiful Saturday. Unfortunately the patio was covered even though it was 65-70 degrees and sunny out. We decided to stay and have lunch anyway because tables were very spaced out. The host seated us and said he would be back with a high chair - he was never seen again. We ordered beers from one of the waitresses who also tends the bar. Then we waited over fifteen minutes to order food as we tried to flag people down. We ordered a brisket sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese (listed as $2 topping for sandwich) but instead go a whole portion which we were charged for. Additionally, I ordered the patio salad with fried chicken and we shared the pretzels and cooper cheese sauce. The pretzels came very fast and were piping hot and tasty. The sandwich was not enjoyable in my opinion but my husband seemed to like it. The meat was chewy and I tried to take a small bite but couldn't break off the meat. It was too Smokey for my liking as well. My salad was large and well-topped. The chicken was thin and dry but added a good crunch to the salad. The mac and cheese was OK but not anything I'd be craving (in fact, the leftovers are still sitting in the fridge 4 days later). Overall, it's a nice environment but not what I remember from my college days. The beer list was lacking in variety of local brews. A few local IPAs and Shandy varieties. I wound up ordering a Sam's Summer (which is something I would never normally go for). I was disappointed with this trip so we will probably opt to visit somewhere else when we return to visit the U's campus again. We did finally get a high chair and it was taller than the table so my daughter couldn't sit to eat with us and we had to hand her individual pieces of food - her feet hit the table. read more

I believe this to be my third review of this business. This will be my last, as I will not be returning. I took a few days to think about this review, and I could not find one saving grace about my last and ultimately final experience here. My last encounter with this bar staff took place on Friday January 31, 2014. Several of my friends started their evening out there, so I met them. I arrived around 7 p.m. I missed happy hour, no big deal there. The Ale House was still in dinner service and the tables were all full, but the bar was pretty empty. I was greeted by a friend sitting at the bar, having a pint. Talked to him for a short period of time and got a beer at the bar. This should have been my first indication. A $6 beer cost me $8... OK this bar was always terrible with over charging. I then sauntered over to the table where the friends I was there to meet were sitting. After a while of the pleasantries, I look down in a fit of despair. My pint was infact empty. This being a terrible situation to find oneself in, I made the decision right then and there to make it my lifes mission to replenish my beer. Off I went. I journeyed over to the bar, where at this point the only three patrons occupying bar stools. They being my friend and two people he was with. With myself at the bar that made FOUR people with three bartenders standing behind the bar. All three looked at me, one was no more than four feet away, and none of them served me. Now to be clear, I had my EMPTY pint glass on the inside edge of the bar and a $10 bill in my hand up in the air like an S.O.S call for beer if you will. I stood there for at least 5 minutes (this is the only kind remark I will make in this review, because I was there for longer than 5 minutes and it certainly felt like an eternity) before a bartender came over to take my order. SIDEBAR: This is the second time the bar was dead and I stood there for an extended period of time while being ignored by the bar staff at this establishment. Though last time I waited for nearly 20 minutes with only two other partons at the bar. After I finally got a bartender I was poured a different pint of life saving ale. Thankfully it is winter and not the dead of summer. Otherwise I may have died from dehydration while waiting so long for my again extremely over priced pint. Again I ordered a beer in the $6 range and was charged $8.50. After this last pint, I did what I can only say took all the strength of 50 men to do. I refrained from drinking yet another overpriced pint and standing abandoned at the bar while bartenders look, but do not touch tap handles. I did this for a half an hour or more waiting begrudgingly in this establishment for my friends to finish up so we could move on to greener pastures. And there are many, many, many, many, many greener pastures in town. Several only a pint glass lob away from this very address. So to recap. Service at the Backyard Ale House- If I could give them ZERO stars I would. I will admit I have had OK (but never even close to average) service here at times,. But the bad service has been more frequent than the acceptable service. Even with a bar devoid of customers and fully stocked with bartenders, one will still wait for service for a long time. Price at the Backyard Ale House. Again I would give ZERO stars if that was an option. Always over priced. I recommend you take a walk around either corner to Adams or Washington to get a much better bar experience. Their prices are right and the service is.... well there is actually service. A note to management, do not ask me to re-review your bar again. I will not. Edit 2-6-2014: In regards to the comment below. I do not want to be miss leading . We came here over the weekend for brunch and were very disappointed to find out that they have done away with brunch, considering it is still advertised on their website. We weren't the only ones who were unaware as I heard other tables asking for the brunch menu. They used to have the best and affordable brunch! Their updated menu doesn't have many options. We each got a sandwich for $11-$12 for JUST the sandwich. No chips, fries, or even a pickle spear. To add fries it would've costed $5 more. $16-$17 for lunch plus the drinks per person is just crazy. Best friend & I visited Scranton the weekend of January 25th. This bar was close to our hotel, was recommended by our hotel bartender, and had great Yelp reviews. So we decided to check it out on a Saturday night. We had a great time. There were two extensive beer lists: one bottled, one draft.. The beer was cold, and moderately priced. Our bartender, Jessica C, was friendly and provided outstanding service. In addition to the regular bar area, the bar features a "back yard" which has a huge tent over it in the winter time, with heaters. We never felt cold or like we were outside when we ventured into this area. Overall, this was a great bar! Tip: There is a blackboard next to the front bar.
