I ended up at this place driving and exploring the hill country. This is one of the most adorable places to visit! So many things to look at and the feel of being out in nature. They had 2 huge pigs roaming around... so cute! Even a pecan tree that I picked some from uninvited... they were delicious cracking them with a stone lol nobody seemed to mind! Well, it was time for another retiree luncheon. This time fourteen of us met here. The group had been a few other times, but it was totally new to me. I know it seems far away to people who don't like to drive distances. But, it is actually only about 30 minutes from my house in San Antonio. Driving to some of my favorite restaurants across town can take a lot longer. Plus, it is a very pleasant "drive in the country", as my daddy used to say when I was a kid. The restaurant is in an old house. The particular table that we were seated at had a major acoustical problem. Teachers can get loud, but this arrangement intensified the voices to the point of being uncomfortable. You wouldn't notice this in a smaller group, or with more polite diners who try to keep their voices down. Our server was wonderful. I have mentioned before how some of the retirees can be kind of grumpy. She took it in stride. Her one mistake was forgetting to bring lemon with one lady's water. She corrected that by bringing several small dishes of lemon slices to the table. One of the ladies asked her how the chicken salad was prepared. She was unphased and rattled off the entire kitchen production. I felt bad that we all had separate checks after working her so hard during lunch. I hope the others also tipped her well. I have also mentioned that one of my meds sometimes messes with me. Today was one of those days. The menu was full of interesting dishes that everyone else ordered and enjoyed. All of them were plated nicely and looked good. But, I just wasn't in the mood for food. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and a cup of the potato bacon soup of the day. Now, don't go feeling sorry for poor little Jimmie. The grilled cheese was a perfect specimen of what a grilled cheese is supposed to be. It had just enough butter to make it crispy and tasty without making my fingers greasy. The bread was nice and thick, the blend of cheeses was exactly the right amount, and the toastiness was spot on. I was afraid the soup was going to be one of those awful cheesy potato soups with the consistency of watery mashed potatoes. It was not. It was a clear broth with chunks of boiled potatoes. It tasted absolutely fantastic. When no one was looking, I dunked my grilled cheese in there as if I were at home. Sorry Mama. Y'all know I have to have dessert. It isn't dining if you skip it. It's just eating out. Anyway, I was torn between the buttermilk pie and the carrot cake. I was about to order a slice of each, when my friend said she was getting the carrot cake and would let me have a bite. I went ahead and ordered the buttermilk pie. I had one bite of each of them. I know... But with that danged med, that was all I could stomach. Both of them were really good. The buttermilk was one of the best I have ever had. And, let me tell you this fat boy has eaten a LOT of buttermilk pie. I didn't hear one bad thing from any of my fellow diners, other than complaints about the noise. I wanted to look at them and say, "Then just shut up!" I mean- the noise wasn't coming from anyone else but us. I won't be bringing my other school retirees here. Unfortunately, we only meet on Tuesdays, and the Backyard Bistro is only open Thursday through Sunday. That is a shame. read more

Setting is a little house in Pipe Creek - when leaving hwy look left or you might miss it. Be sure to check hours but it's basically open on weekends. Food was great! Fresh, yummy, homemade. Crab cakes were excellent, fresh lemon dressing, homemade basil cinnamon pepper ice cream was great-love the creativity. Hubby had carrot curry soup and said it was out of this world. Glad we found this local bistro! We came from a long hike/trekking at west peak overlook. We were so tired and hungry - drove to this place hoping that we will get a real good food. Backyard Bistro did NOT disappoint us. It was really good from main course to dessert. Their carrot cake was on point, not too sweet and rich with ingredients. This is my second visit to this little bistro. The eatery is in the rear of a large antiques establishment. It is very quaint with a nice, casual vibe. Many of the furnishings are for sale. There is also a large outdoor dining area. On the day we visited we had reservations for 1030. There were tables available but the place filled up while we were there. Two of our party ordered the special- a chicken fried steak with gravy, eggs your way, toast and fruit for $13. One of us got the spinach and tomato omlet with fruit for $8, and I ordered an appetizer of 4 panko encrusted cheese grits in remoulade sauce for $6. We also shared a shrimp corn dog appetizer, basically shrimp fried in cornmeal in a sweet and spicy thai sauce. It was $4 for 4 shrimp so we all tried it and liked it very much. Two of us ordered tea and one got coffee. He also ordered the cauliflower soup which was not served so we had to get it taken off the bill. We ate everything. It was wonderful, made fresh and cooked to order. Our total bill was $55 plus tax and tip. They have a nice selection of homemade desserts but we were full from our meal. I did not take anything away from my rating although the waitress forgot the soup and it took way longer than it should to get the bill, get it picked up and then returned. If there is one thing I would criticize is the bathroom. There is only one and it seems whenever I have gone to use it someone is in there holding a morning constitution. So I just stand there outside the door in the middle of the restaurant waiting for whoever is in there to wrap it up, so to speak. I think they need to make a second bathroom out of the overly large space they have for one sink and toilet. Somthing to consider for the future. In summary, this bistro is quaint with just a big enough portion of fresh tasty food you can finish without getting a box, and very reasonable prices. read more

This place is not just a Hill Country gem, but a Texas gem. It is located in the heart of Bandera, TX right off Hwy 16 and just a hop-skip-and-a-jump from San Antonio. The service was phenomenal- friendly and attentive - and the food was perfectly cooked and DELICIOUS!! I had the Pecan-crusted Chicken and it was cooked to perfection. My daughter had the Bistro Burger and sweet potato fries and she hasn't stopped raving. Plus their yummy desserts are all handmade fresh! I am so glad we stopped instead of driving back to San Antonio. We will definitely make the drive back specifically to visit this restaurant. You should too! read more

Pulled over on the way home from Boerne and was pretty surprised with the entire experience. Definitely exceeded my expectations. You drive down a sketchy caliche road thinking you are going to someone's house behind an antique store. You are only partially right. It's a house, but no one lives there anymore. The parking lot is small, but if the weather is warm there's a ton of seating outside. If the weather is bad, you may be a little tight inside if it looks like the parking lot is full. Don't worry, park where ever. All the tables were taken so they asked if we wanted to sit outside on a February Friday. It was cool, but we were hungry. On the way they said that we could have the private dinning room. Sure! It turned out to be a little house/room/shed way out back and it was awesome. I thought I was living large. Very pretty, very romantic. If only we didn't have a third wheel with us! Started off with the corndog shrimp and it came with onion soup. The corndog shrimp were very novel. Shrimp on a skewer that had been dipped in corndog batter. Tasted awesome. Came with some sweat & sour chili sauce to give it that Asian vibe. Well done there. The onion soup was a bit sketchy and wasn't nearly to the same level of quality or innovation. A dollop of cheese was in there somewhere and a piece of bread. A high & low before starting the entree. I had the Chicken Fried Steak and really enjoyed it. It wasn't the ginormous slab of fried steak you are used to, but it tasted absolutely fantastic. There was some gravy for it and the great mashed potatoes but it wasn't swimming in it, so I was happy. It was accompanied by some nice steamed/backed zucchini and tomato slice. Pretty good roll ended the event. The waitress was nice but I think she forgot us a few times being out in the remote spot. No big deal, we were having fun with our conversations. Overall a great, unexpected meal. Pro-tip: If they put you in the private dining area consider yourself fortunate and enjoy the wonky privacy. Make sure you have your patience pill or don't go out there. Finally, bring your own music or it's like a tomb. We whipped out Spotify and dialed it in. read more

Randomly found this place after picking up a rescue dog and WOW was I amazed. I ordered biscuits with jam and they gave us some of their "strawberry butter". I dont even eat butter but I ate theirs with every bite. Not like a normal person but the entire dollop with every bite. The shrimp corn dog was perfectly seasoned and cooked. I ate 6 pieces all to myself. Everyone loved their dishes. But holy moley guacamole was their ice cream (honey and the basil peppercorn) OUT OF THIS WORLD! My boyfriend and I were wanting to get some breakfast close by and I normally don't like going to chains like Denny's or IHOP unless that was all that was around. I like trying out new places and being adventurous, so I found this gem and it was only 10-15 minutes away. We were greeted with a nice hostess that complimented my pretty robe I had on around me. She sat us down close to the dessert and we ordered our meals, which came out pretty quick. I got the meat and cheese omelette which came with a biscuit, fruit, and potatoes. A lot of food. And my boyfriend ordered the biscuits and gravy. The biscuit was really nice with some jelly and butter. And the omelette was delicious as well. Though the food was relatively good, what really stood out was the coconut cake I ordered for dessert. The coconut cake was moist and had the perfect amount of coconut shavings and semisweet frosting. What a fun spot! Perfect country bistro in Pipe Creek, Texas, not far from Boerne and San Antonio. Antique store in front and bistro right off the main road plus rental cabins. Lovely outdoor area with a great area for kids to play. We enjoyed brunch on Saturday and loved the homemade sweet potato biscuits and strawberry butter (reminded me of Magnolia in Waco!). Kid's meals were just right- chicken fingers and fries and fruit- lots of other options too for kids, including Mickey Mouse pancakes. So today we came to this place for brunch yesterday morning. We came in from out of town for our anniversary so our family from San Antonio came in to meet up with us. It was amazing place because everyone made us feel like we were at home. My breakfast of spinach and tomato omelette was yummy. The potatoes that were with it needed some seasoning so they were bland but everything else was yummy. My husband and his sister had the carnitas special. He said they food was good but the meat had no seasoning. We came for dinner and got the following: Bruschetta appetizer: very good but was not on bruschetta bread Dinner: I had the pecan chicken with lemon sauce pasta. Chicken was amazing but the pasta had no lemon flavor or anything. Disappointing. Husband: steak was rare even though he asked for medium. Veggies were good but some were cold. Dessert: crème brûlée was good but also very cold Husband: basil ice cream. He said that was his favorite part. The wait staff in the evening was slow and hard to find to try to get anything fixed. Also had grit fritters and they were so awesome as well. Salad fresh and clean w I believe homemade ranch which was delightful. The main dishes we ordered slightly dropped in impressiveness. We had pecan crusted chicken and chicken fried steak. I believe the pecan crusted chicken paired w linguini pasta is a bad concept in general. Makes no sense. Did not pair well but still hot, crispy and good. The chicken fried steak was fair, the gravy was a let down as it was thin and not a "cream" gravy. More like a thin turkey gravy you would eat at thanksgiving. Not the best rolls or biscuits or bread, not sure what that was. Still good and nothing to complain about. Served w fresh vegetables. Main dishes not served as piping hot as the appetizers. Unsweetened tea a little skunky for my liking. Over all I give the place two thumbs up and is a worthy stop for foodies. We were staying in bandera and not excited about the food options. We found this place just a few miles outside of town and it was so good! We showed up at 8pm on a Friday and only a few tables were taken. We had well priced wine, a salad, soup, and fried cheese grits to start. For our meals we had the salmon and the seafood pasta special. The salmon was cooked perfectly and everything was just so delicious.
