I had always wanted to try this place, and we finally did... I was disappointed. We have friends who joined us and had eaten there before, so I thought it was going to be better... First off, it didn't meet my hubby's full parking lot seal of approval. There were maybe two cars in the parking lot, and we were confused as to whether or not the restaurant was even open. We knew it was because our friends had arrived before us and were already inside. Secondly, the ambience was of a restaurant about to close. Lots of empty tables, no music playing, kind of sad tables and chairs. Next, the menu was a bit confusing. There's plates, combo plates, salad bar combo plates, sandwiches, et al. It took a bit of explaining to understand that you could get the BBQ meat and a trip to the salad bar but it doesn't come with any sides unless you want to pay extra, or a dinner plate with your choice of BBQ meat that comes with sides and an optional trip to the salad bar, but then there's choices of premium or standard sides some of which you can get with one dinner plate but not with another dinner plate. Yeah. Anyway, we ordered. Hubby opted for the meat (pulled pork) with a salad bar, and I opted for the St Louis ribs dinner plate with mac n cheese, coleslaw and corn bread. I also got a serving of the corn fritters which I always like to try at BBQ places. So the ribs were tender. They had a nice flavor and seasoning. You have a choice of several BBQ sauces. I liked the sweet and sweet mustard sauces. The mild was ok, and I'm not a hot fan so I can't comment on those. Hubby said his pulled pork was good, nothing special. The corn fritters were great; crispy on the outside and creamy goodness on the inside. But other than that, the coleslaw was very bland just chopped cabbage really without much else. The mac n cheese was plain. The corn bread was like standard corn bread and not memorable. Hubby thought the salad bar was "average." I'm not going to say we won't go back, but I think we'll be trying other BBQ venues first. For the price and what you get, the value just wasn't there. The food that I liked: the corn fritters and the Hot BBQ sauce. The food that was okay: corn bread and the ribs. I think that the ribs were either old or over cooked because they were dry and it was difficult getting the meat off of the bone. They were flavored well just dry and that's unfortunate. The green beans were very VERY over cooked and lacked seasoning. I've had the chicken here before and that's very good but the food today just missed the mark. This plate came up to $22. Wow, what a price shock from a year ago. We use to love this location, and decided to try it again. I'm still in shock, $17.99 for sliced Eye of Round (very dry). The portion was alright for us, who eat very little. It came with Garlic Toast, that tasted like rather grill top it was cooked on (I love Garlic Toast). We each ordered a potato, because it use to come with the meal, not anymore, it was a $1.00 additional for each potato. Not what I would get normally for lunch. Came with corn on Cobb bbq beans and garlic toast. Plus sweet tea. Ribs were good. Did not like the beans. Bland and soggy. Corn was grilled. Whole Cobb to get rid of yesterday's cooking. Garlic bread. It's bread. Clean bathrooms. Wait staff lazy. That's why they get paid 8.98 plus tips. I'll leave a tip because it's the right thing to do. Having been a loyal customer for the past 3 years with a visit once every month or two, last evening will be my last. As always, the food was excellent and the service was good as well. For whatever reason, a few loud death metal songs were blaring through the dining room during our meal. When we finished eating, I questioned our waitress, (who also told me she was one of the managers), about the music. She explained to me that they have a jukebox system which allows guests to play music of their choice to "enhance their dining experience". Death metal, does not enhance my dining experience! I also asked her about a $5.00 reward on my account from their new dining program which I wanted to use on my bill. She told me that I must not have had my phone # linked to my account since it was not deducted at checkout. Upon checking the app, my phone # was attached to my account. When I asked if I could have the $5.00 taken from the bill, she handed me a $5.00 bill and told me it came from her tip money. I explained to her that as an older person, I'm not the best at understanding all the tech talk she was giving me trying to explain their new dining rewards app and jukebox, etc. Instead of being friendly, she had an extremely patronizing tone with me and was condescending. She mentioned a second time about the $5.00 coming from her tip money. I told her that I didn't like the way she spoke to me and this would be my last time dining here. I'll miss the food since it's always excellent, and the rest of the wait staff who have always been friendly and pleasant! But after tonight, I won't be back. The Daytona News Journal just had an article on June 27th, "Best Daytona Beach BBQ joints? 6 Area restaurants worth the road trip", Backyard Boys wasn't one of them. Shocked! Things have changed, especially the food, and not for the better. Went last Monday and had the free salad bar with the eye of round dinner. The salad bowl was almost empty, and the lettuce pieces that were there were huge. Hardly anything for toppings for the salad. After having the salad and garlic bread, took the dinner home to have that night for supper. I could not eat the meat, it had a bloody taste to it and ended up throwing it out. The coleslaw lately has a lot of the cabbage core in it. I'm not a fan, a little is fine, except the last few times it seems like more and more is being used. It has such a strong taste. We were going there once a week, and we loved it. The past couple of months things have changed, so we will probably wait a few months before going back. As we were driving to our vacation destination, this place caught our attention. We immediately added it to our mental list of places we wanted to check out while here. Well... today was the day!! We stopped by a few minutes before 6pm and were a bit nervous because there weren't many cars parked outside and it didn't look like there were any people dining in either. We proceeded with caution and were soon greeted by a young lady that walked us to our table. Soon after, our waitress came by introduced herself and took our drink orders. We started with the fried corn fritters, dusted with powdered sugar. They were delicious! For our meal, we ordered the Backyard Family Feast meal for 4, which includes 1/3 lbs of sliced eyeround beef, 1/3 lbs of sliced pork, whole bbq chicken, 1 lbs of cut spare ribs, corn bread and 3 sides (corn on the cob, bbq beans and fries). As the food started to come out, we were shocked at the amount of food there was. Everything looked great and was delicious. We ate all we could fit and took the rest to go. The place was nice and cozy, the staff was very friendly and our waitress was amazing. She stopped by several times to check in, refill our drinks and make sure we had everything we needed. Went here for lunch with my toddler and boyfriend, he ordered bbq chicken, I ordered brisket, and my son had a hot dog. I wish I had taken a picture of the first plate of brisket as it looked like leather and was cold. I sent it back and received this in its place. I did not eat this but had some of my boyfriends chicken. The waitress felt bad so she brought us more bbq chicken, which I thought was nice of her. Unfortunately we ate lunch at 1pm, and now at 7:30pm we are all puking. Called and talked to the owner, Tim. He told me there's no way his brisket gave us food poisoning, I told him I know because it was inedible and the tiny piece I did eat was spit into a napkin because it was so dry and gross. Pretty sure it was the chicken or cross contamination. I told him we'd be bringing him the medical bills for my son, he was indifferent. Also, the kids meal comes with a free ice pop, we reached into the freezer they have and literally every ice pop has melted and refrozen, leaving them all in a sticky slime. I just can't figure out why this restaurant has as many stars as it does. I also am unable to comprehend how it has stayed open for all these years. Today, I decided to try it again after having not dined with them for fifteen or twenty years. I thought if they lasted this long perhaps it had gotten better. It is close to where I live, the salad bar is quite decent and my husband's french fries were hot and crispy. The waitress was pleasant. Two meals, one sweet tea, came in under $35 without tip. These are the only good things I can say. The bad: The bench table seats are incredibly uncomfortable. Only two narrow slats wide. I kept sliding off. I wanted to move to a table with regular chairs but my husband didn't want to make an issue out of where we were sitting. I had just sat down with my salad and started to eat it when a waitress came to us with our food orders. My husband kept his but I asked them to take mine back so I could finish my salad. (Preface following with: We had read one other review that warned us but we wanted to try for ourselves). My husband had the St.Louis ribs, fries, corn bread and cole slaw. The ribs had absolutely no flavor and were dry and tough. He tried all the sauces. Every single one of them was thin and very low on flavor, even the one that was supposed to be hot/spicy. This place is all about meat! However, they don't have brisket...which is odd for a BBQ spot. How do you now have ANY brisket?smh...this place doesn't. But other than that, it's pretty darn good. According to past reviews, the customer service could be better. I disagree. Our server was quite kind and helpful. She came off a little stand offish at first. But, she warmed up quickly. And she took care of us quite well through the whole dinning experience. The food came out hot and was pretty delicious. You can tell they genuinely smoke their meats and not boil them. The meat does not come out drenched in sauce to make up for the meat flavor. However, the sides were kind of bland. You come here for the meat, and the sides are just kind of there. No alcohol either, except beer. And the menu is kind of extensive. A simpler menu would be better. But hey, it is what it is. However, the portion sizes are quite large. You get a lot of food for the price. Not too expensive ether. The place has plenty of seating. A little open. And the restaurant is quite dated. I'm guessing they have been in the area for awhile. Not quite BBQ! I'm from KC and that was nothing to write home about! How do you have smoked Brisket that taste like Corned Beef? The ribs were tough and tasteless, BBQ beans were pasty and bland. The green beans and mac n cheese bites my friend said were good, at least! We wasted $40... for two two meat meals. Just threw it away just was not worth the effort to chew or calories. Don't know if this is Florida BBQ but more like boil meat that was put on the grill top after but surely Not smoked. read more

Good BBQ is always hard to find, so I'm lucky that I have found backyard boys bbq! Not only is their BBQ to die for, but their all you can eat option is great to explore more of the menu! Their sides are always delicious as well. Now the 4 star here is that the food doesnt always come out hot, however, the flavor makes the food still good and somewhere I will frequent. The other thing is when I first started going, the beans were super delicious yet the last time I went they were not nearly as good as they were originally. Sunday at noon, walked in, waited a few minutes and was told to "sit wherever." After waiting LITERALLY 15 mins, I walked up and grabbed two menus, in hopes of someone noticing our presence. Five more mins went by, still completely ignored. There were four other tables in the building, by the time a six top got greeted, put their drink orders in, received their drinks, put their order in and the server put it in the POS, we still sat... four employees standing by the host stand, talking. Whoever was in the collared shirt told us to sit wherever we liked, blatantly ignored us, greeted a single guy that walked in after us, and then rolled her eyes when we left. My orders were accurate and all the extra items that I would even think of needing, like wet naps & extra sauce, were thoughtfully placed in the bag.
