I've only ever had their blueberry bagel so I can't speak to anything else foodwise. It has the bagel shape but that's where the resemblance ends because the taste and texture is completely different from anything else I've ever had. I love Bagel Central! Their bagels are soft and fresh vs chewy and there is so many flavors of bagels and cream cheese to choose from. I also like that they don't just sell bagels, they sell baked goods, coffee, sandwiches, soups, salads and much more! Although its iconic that they are located on Central street, I wish they would relocate because it is so hard to find parking if you don't live or work downtown. My partner and I have visited the Bagel Central several times and at different times of the day. The atmosphere is like a high school cafeteria but very cordial. The staff in the front are always friendly. Tables are clean. As for the food, it is a different style of bagel compared with a NY style. Sandwiches are good tasting. All-in-all,the place is interesting and cosmopolitan. We will keep eating there. read more

Besides having a delicious breakfast with my son the other day at Bagel Central the owner/management was so great to deal with when we accidentally left our backpack with valuables on the back of a chair and drove home to the Portland area without it. Without hesitating the owner said she would immediately ship the backpack to us by express mail (we of course paid the postage). We were in Bangor on vacation for a few days and this was the best breakfast place we came across. Considering that the food options in Bangor are a little limited, we were were pleasantly surprised when we happened upon this bakery. Like pizza, people have really strong opinions about bagels - All I can say is that I had a bagel with cream cheese here and thought it was quite good. It was much softer than most bagels I've had, but it was very tasty and appeared to be freshly baked. I'm not sure it will be your cup of tea - but I was pretty happy when I was done. If you are too particular about your bagels I would suggest opting for a muffin instead. We bought a couple and one of my biggest regrets of our vacation is that I didn't buy a few more from this establishment. read more

Their water processed bagels are excellent; their cream cheese is the most delicious; they make really good muffins; their pastrami sandwich with Russian dressing is out of this world, so long as the pastrami is fresh (make sure to ask). People who work there are all really nice. The pastries that are not made at the store, such as eclairs, etc., can sometimes be a little old. But ask and they tell you how fresh they are. read more

Stopped in over the weekend and the first thing we noticed was the line that extended out the door. We knew that the food we were about to get must be pretty good if it had that kind of demand. We got a half dozen bagels and brought them home. The bagel was delicious! As a frequent flyer on the Downtown Bangor lunch scene, Bagel Central never disappoints. As the name implies, bagels are the heart and soul of this family-owned business. Freshly made and sometimes still warm, the bagels are the closest thing to NYC one will find in the 04401. Breakfast dishes as well as lunch meals include these bagels as centerpieces for sandwiches (the breakfast sandwich is amazing!) as well as on the side. There are several homemade cream cheese options (that often change daily) as well as lox and other toppings. The environment here is custom made for the lunch meet up, the student study break, the family stop by, and the business meeting. The family style dining room allows for large groups to gather while also having side tables and booths for smaller parties. I'm both gluten and lactose intolerant, so the fact that I can easily eat here is reason enough for it to get at least four stars in my book! So while I can't speak to the authenticity of their bagels or the flavor of their cream cheese, I can say that it's really nice walking in and placing a normal (ish) order just like everyone else. I have visited Bagel Central several times and in general have been impressed by the quality of their servings in spite of the fact that they charge extra for minor things such as toasting the bagels. I must however, report that on a recent trip I ordered two bagels which were dried out and tasteless. It appeared to me that the bagels were either not fresh or had been previously frozen. i reported this to the staff but they totally ignored me. Hopefully this was just a "slip-up" on the part of staff. I believe that they should have at least responded to me. Behavior of this type exhibited by the staff will ultimately damage Central bagels' reputation and no doubt adversely affect their business. read more

The only place in the area that has a bagel I'd be willing to eat. They are really good. Also the cream cheese is pretty decent. Lots of choices too. I've had a few of the other menu items, which were mostly unremarkable. I used to kill time there every morning with a bagel and coffee waiting for the bus to the University; it's a great place to just sit down with a coffee and read or start up a conversation. It's a pretty busy place and sometimes the wait time for something simple like a bagel w/ cream cheese seems a little long, but it's really not a big deal. I'd rather wait 5 minutes for a really delicious bagel than wait 3 minutes for a hockey-puck bagel that's probably been dropped on the floor with unspreadably cold cream cheese from dunkin donuts. read more
