Rude owner!! Love the bagels but the owner gave me attitude when I tried calling multiple times to order a simple bagel and cream cheese and they hung up on me a few times. Showed up at the store and was told to order online. I used to come every other week and never had bad experiences with his teenaged employees but this was my first interaction with the owner. Owner has no idea how to conduct business properly - probably one of the rudest owners I've ever encountered. He offers 0 customer service and is pushy and unpleasant to deal with. It seems like they run out of bagels all the time and common ones too, like everything and cinnamon raisin. He'll yell at you for not placing an order online and say to leave the parking spot in front of his store and then when you go to order on his website you can't even order a coffee with your bagel. After living in Massachusetts for three years and eating the objects those poor people call "bagels," we were so excited to find the best real bagels around the corner from us when we came back to Jersey! Chewy chewy yummy yummy. Get the cinnamon raisin or the everything. So fresh. Service here is excellent and the bagels are doughy and delicious. My only complaint with the bagels is that I love everything bagels and when I tried one from here there was hardly any "everything" on it. I didn't mind since the bagel was good as it was but I felt like I was eating a plain bagel. When we arrived there was a line around the restaurant. There is very little seating here but nobody stayed too long for that to matter. People were considerate though and didn't stand right in front of customers sitting at the tables to eat. The line moved very quickly. Once we ordered I took a seat while my husband waited for the food. One of the gentlemen delivered our bagels to our table and then told me since it would be hard for me to get my husband's attention because of the line blocking us that he would get him for me. Everything in here was clean and the tables we're always wiped down after people ate. We had a good experience and I'd come back but just not for an everything bagel. read more

Treats customers like cattle. The owner is terrible to his customers. Waited in line for my order. Website said 30 mins to pick up 12 bagels. Not sandwiches, just bagels. When I got to the counter the owner immediately became rude and nasty. Raised his voice at me/became condescending/and yelled "Goodbye!!" As I walked out. All because I came 30 mins after I placed my order when he stated it would be an hour and a half. Clearly it was a misunderstanding. No need to become nasty! That is not how you do business. Maybe try thinking outside the box and throw some bagels in a bag. Or at least kindly explain your policy. Or get a larger space for your business. Even before COVID this place always had a line, and for good reason - consistently awesome bagels. Staff are very professional - it's an open baking/prep area so you can see everything and they get it done - no laziness going on with this staff. Some adjustment due to COVID, with take out only now, wait time to get your order ready could be 45 mins to an hour on a saturday - but they tell you that when you order so no surprises. Always look forward to my weekend trips to this place - my fave is the pork roll and egg on a garlic bagel - no cheese. Simple and great. I don't understand the buzz. As usual, I employ my three visit analysis. First breakfast on Sunday. The line was out the door. That's a good sign since it must be good...but they are quick to move you out. When I asked if I could have my bagel toasted, it was as if I asked to have the restaurant renamed after me. A very sarcastic yes was provided. Bagel was good but not great. And not worth the 20 minute wait. I prefer the bagel store in red bank - Brooklyn hot bagels (I don't work there and am not affiliated with that place). It's a better bagel and quicker service. It's right down the street! Lunch during the week. The masters melt and the turkey melt. The best part is they have a free lunch card so five sandwiches means a free one. However, this may be too many visits for one average sandwich. The turkey melt was good (4 out of 5) but the masters melt (tuna salad with melted cheese muenster and tomato) was average at best. Tuna was below par and the combination of Tuna and cheese (normally a classic!!) was not done. Tuna seemed old. Not fresh. Not good. Third try. This was the best of three. Caesar bagel master wrap was well done. A honey wheat wrap was also a treat. The wild western wrap was also above average. Perhaps because the restaurant was not busy, I got a nice sandwich. Beware...if this place is busy=sloppy sandwiches, average bagels and subpar service. read more

Fabulous bagel, extraordinary service. Good choice of bagel varieties, I didn't order a sandwich. Additionally, I went in on a busy Sunday when two separate angry customers were rushing the order line. Both managers were extremely patient and accommodating while re-explaining their order policy. Maybe the church pews are too stiff or there was too much sand in these customers shoes, or maybe they just never learned to be respectful -- but the staff handled it with absolute grace. Bottom line I am highly allergic to dairy and I was given regular milk without being told. When I went to make sure it was a dairy free milk (after I made the mistake of adding it to my cold brew), I was then told that it was not. That was fine, mistakes happen, but I simply wanted another cold brew without any milk. I was told no and given a HUGE attitude by the owner about it. I've worked in the food service industry for years and that was absolutely terrible costumer service. No way to treat customers that have paid, especially as an owner. The other bad reviews seem to be about the owner's attitude as well so I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this. He definitely does need to get off his "high horse"! I have to stick up for this place. I agree the way they've handled sales during COVID hasn't been completely efficient every time, but at least they have a serious system. Case in point, the first time we wanted bagels during the new normal I went online to order and couldn't get it to work. I then called but the phone was busy over and over again. I finally got in the car and drove there. The parking lot was empty other than cars pulling in, getting handed bags of food, and pulling out. I got out and walked to the door but a teenager stopped me and told me I had to preorder and they'd bring it to my car. I told him I tried to order online and he said the system was down and I had to call my order in. I said I tried that too but it was busy. I asked him to just write my order down but he said sorry that's the system. And by the way, it was a 45 minute wait once I called it in! I was fairly annoyed. I said "no thanks" and drove down the road to see if the bagel place next to Foodtown at the junction of Newman Springs Road and Rte 35 was accepting walk ins. I found a small crowd gathered in the lot outside the front door so I was about to bail but noticed a parking spot right up front so I gave it a shot. Turned out all the people outside the door were EATING their food. Hmm, I thought, perhaps not ideal that I have to walk through a crowd of chewing, talking people in the height of the pandemic. Once inside they took my order right away which initially felt better than what I had just gone through. However, while I was waiting I noticed an older guy behind the counter who I assumed could have been the owner walking around with his mask below his chin. He was talking to employees, handling food, etc. Not once did he put his mask over his mouth and nose. I was grossed out so when I got home I insisted everyone toast their bagels just in case. We've been back to Bagel Masters about 5 times since that day (about to be 6) and haven't had a problem ordering online. I like their system: very efficient, no extraneous germs brought into the store, and if you look in through the large plate glass windows you see every employee has a mask on. Regarding Darren the owner, I recall the very first time I went there he made a point to come over to the register while someone else was ringing me up, introduced himself and thanked me for coming in -despite the fact that they were very busy. As for the bagels they are among the best around. They offer decent variety like cheddar jalapeno and french toast (kids' favorite). I'd like to see more options, perhaps flavors like chocolate chip or asiago, but they're ahead of most other places and again the bagels are excellent. read more

Reminiscent of the bagels I had on Long Island - bigger than normal and without the crunchy outside/soft inside that you might usually find in NJ. Not my favorite, but people obviously like it. There's a small area for seating. They take cash only (ATM inside) and their queuing system is a bit dysfunctional, especially when it gets out the door on busy weekend mornings.
