We got two simple bagels (egg and cheese) and a black coffee (which you pour yourself) and it was over $25. Migrated from Lincoln Square to 4655 North Lincoln Avenue after a lease dispute in 2018 Baker Miller is no stranger to turmoil, and amidst a global pandemic the concept from Megan Miller and husband David has resorted to take-out only from 8am until 3pm Thursday through Monday. Officially titled Baker Miller Bakery & Dinette, a combination café and mill house from former Bang Bang Pie employees that debuted in 2014, much of the Miller's early praise came from house-ground Grains, hand-milled Flour and Chicago's first "Toast Bar," while critiques of both price and inconsistency have also been commonplace. Using online or walk-up ordering during COVID-19, staff appropriately donning PPE but inattentive-bordering-on-rude while waiting for two slices of Bread to be toasted, it was on a nearby bench that the Miller's goods were eaten, buttered naturally-leavened Sourdough an immediate highlight thanks to both tanginess and crumb while a $3.75 Biscuit was arguably underbaked at the bottom but nonetheless enjoyable. Trying hard not to focus on prices, David and Megan's commitment to their craft most certainly commendable, it is hard not to raise an eyebrow at $3.50 for a two-bite Sandwich Cookie that tastes mostly like Sugar, a quarter more for double the amount of Chocolate Chips and perfectly baked Dough faring far better in terms of taste as well as value. Also performing well with a toothsome Thumbprint Cookie, Strawberry Jam providing just enough sweetness to a blend of Nuts and Oats, those seeking a "signature" item will find it in Baker Miller's "Doughboy," the baked round far lighter than a Doughnut and currently dressed like Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal clocking in at $4.50 after tax - far better than the more expensive Blueberry Oat Muffin which finds Fruit in a clump at the center of an otherwise flavorless matrix. read more

Update: I am updating my review to lower it from two starts to one star. I have never done this before, but I believe this time it is warranted. After writing this review, I gave feedback to Baker Miller though my e-mail receipt. I made similar comments on that feedback, that the coffee and food was not good that it was over priced. Baker Miller responded by saying that I "attacked" them, that my comments about their food "lack awareness" and that it was my fault for the food and coffee tasting poorly, specifically because I chose the wrong milk for my wife's latte. They also stated I do not under food industry economics. Baker Miller and their "push back", as they call it, is everything that is wrong with the restaurant industry today. Baker Miller has no concern with their customers. Rather than treating me a valuable guest, they feel I should just be happy to pay too much, compared to other independent coffee shops, for poor product, and be happy with it because they think they are cool. This is totally and completely arrogant. Your food and coffee was not good and they messed up my order, own it. You have a problem, fix it. They clearly feel they are better than their customers. I'm not surprised as it is run people that otherwise act wholly than thou, and too cool for school. Customers do not exist to support you just because. We have every right to provide feedback you did not agree with. Regarding your food and coffee prices, they are, in deed, higher compared to similar coffee shops and bakeries. The economic reality is that other comparable places provide a batter product with less attitude at lower prices which is a better value. Shame on you for being so thin skinned. To err is human, but Baker Miller should strive to improve, but blamed everyone else for problems. There are a lot of great independent coffee shops in Lincoln Square, this is not one of them. I have been here several times, each time hoping it will better, but it just isn't. My most recent visit was with my wife. We purchased an iced latte, iced coffee and Old School Lox Breakfast Bagel. First, they messed up our order. My wife order a hot latte, but she got a iced latte. I ordered the Old School Lox Breakfast Bagel without capers and cucumbers, but what I got was no capers and nor onions. To their credit, is they offered to remake the sandwich, but I didn't want to wait. Second, their coffee isn't that good. My iced coffee was too watery and didn't have a lot of coffee taste. While I didn't try my wife's iced latte, she told it was terrible. She thought it was so bad that she stated she wanted to make coffee at home and then mix in the homemade in her latte. Third, they are way to expensive. The bagel sandwich and two coffees with tax cost more than $28.00. The bagel sandwich was good, but not great. While I understand that independent coffee shops tend to a little more expensive, the coffee and food still need to be worth the cost. In sum, if you want a good cup of coffee in Lincoln Square you can pass on Baker Miller and go to one of Lincoln Square's other independent coffee shops. read more

I really wanted to like the new bagel concept. The bagel sandwiches are good but rather expensive. The eggs are reconstituted and while there are lots of cream cheese options, there's not much in the way of sliced cheese aside from American. The booths are inviting but there are no plates or silverware available and the bagels are messy. You get a buzzer and when your food is ready, the team just leaves it on the counter in a bag and scurries away rather than bringing it to your table (I was the only one in there). That doesn't feel friendly, and the whole new set up feels like they just want you to gtfo. Sad because the Baker Miller was cute, friendly and helpful. I hope this hard boiled Bagel joint softens up! read more

They also do curbside and delivery. Yay Baker Miller! After we got home from our bike ride and demolished our dough boys we even decided to order some breakfast biscuits for delivery! No greeting, and when asked about a product they had in stock, instead of letting us know she'll check, she held her finger up and walked away. Cookies were subpar as well. I used to go to Baker Miller fairly often when it was on Western and this morning was my first time at the new location on Lincoln. I'd read all the reviews about how it's gone downhill, but I didn't want to believe it! Sadly, it's true. I arrived just after opening and was the only customer there. I ordered a doughboy and the oatmeal, both of which I typically loved. When the oatmeal came out, it was in an unsealed container (I was taking it to-go) that was already leaking into the bag. The person who brought it out had quickly disappeared and I understood why, because it looked like an awful mess. All of the care that used to go into the food, presentation, and customer service was gone. To top it all off, there weren't any containers in the bag or on the bar to take jam from the jam bar, which is something that is presumably part of the $10 cost. I asked for a new bag, was given one that was too small for the bowl, and left in disgust. At least it was warm? Baker Miller just lost my business. read more

I enjoy a bagel from time to time and heard great things about this establishment. My first experience I walked in around 2:45 after a workout and was told they were closed even though it states 3pm. All I wanted was a bagel toasted with smear. Nothing fancy. The young lady was not even nice about it, extremely rude. I tried again after a workout with my BF and we walked in around 2:40 and was able to order a bagel with cream cheese, received our food and then was told that they were closed. She then said if you can eat your bagel in ten minutes you can stay. It was a weekday and I get that it closes at 3pm but then it should close at 3pm and not before. It wouldn't have been such a big deal if the service /lady working was actually professional and not awfully rude!!! It's been an awful experience with the customers service there and it's very apparent that there's no work ethic at all!!!!!!!! I'll take my business to R&A from now on!!!! read more

We decided to stop by and try this place since my friend loved the walkup window during covid. We shared the Ben because we weren't really hungry; but, wanted to try it. The sandwich was excellent - the bisquit was very good. We chose tator tots and there were a ton of them. We weren't able to eat them all. I had a chai latte which was different than what I'm used to; not as spicy. I wouldn't go special for the chai. However, I would drink it if I'm there for something else. A very good neighborhood bakery, with strong biscuits (more crumbly than flaky), nice bread, and an impeccable key lime pie. To be sure, the individual items have some ups and downs -- the avocado-colored mayonnaise on my biscuit sandwich was off-putting (down), and the nice bread on our toast plate was sliced too thick (down), but the house jams are like the delicious intense essence of fruit (up), and the graham crust in that impeccable key lime pie had an especially memorable caramel nuttiness to it (way up). I would have said that I don't really care if they grind their own heirloom flours, but I assume that is the key to that graham crust, and I do care about every wonderful choice that somehow led to that miraculous bite. I'm tempted to award five stars for the key lime pie alone, but this is a really strong category citywide (bakeries) and a really strong neighborhood (with Luella's and Kitsune/Bunny just down the block). read more

My favorite place in the neighborhood who made my favorite dish ever, Elote Grits. I know they're currently off the menu but every day I dream they'll be back. For right now, the majority of their menu are bagel sandwiches which are divine - perfectly chewy bagels (none of those mushy messes that you find at coffee shop chains), high quality fillings (especially the corned beef and lox!), and easily transportable. We've also gotten a few of their pies for special occasions and everyone raved over them. The horchata one was definitely a stand out. Love this place and happy to support them. read more

I'm in love with Baker Miller, and I've made my obsession very clear to all who know me. Their stone cut oatmeal + fruit preserves (MM that banana) is very much a game changer. Trust. Me. They bring everything back to their roots - making everything from scratch and doing things in house. I'm a huge fan of brunch here because it's not your typical "brunch" feel - picnic table seating, order at the counter, and all served on camping silverware. Now that's my kinda place! The savory options are all wonderful, perfectly seasoned, and much more filling than you'd think. The hashes, grain bowls, grits... Seriously, go in a group, eat a bit of everything, and enjoy yourselves. It's such a delicious experience! +THOSE DOUGH BOYS. They won an arbitrary "Chicago's Best Donut" award for these bad boys, but they're light, dangerously easy to eat, and come in so many different types! The oreo is a particular favorite :) PS. Driving northbound on Lincoln Ave, I finally decided to try Miller bakery. We had just eaten a large stack of pancakes, and decided to pick up a couple of lattes. The service was efficient, fast, and friendly. They were passing out mobile orders at the door, while taking orders (like mine) at the window. We received our breve lattes within a few minutes, in sturdy, thick cups, and left. Coffee beans are from Seattle. Lattes are good, as is the service. Would recommend if you're nearby and want to support small- businesses. read more

So I go in person, first I try to order just pastrami by the 1/4lb which it says they offer on the site, the cashier looks at me confused and says they dont offer that. So then I try to order a sandwich on a long roll which I have had here multiple times and the cashier says "this is a bagel shop". Not a good response to a customer! I'll never recommend or return. Yet another out-of-touch company that is taking advantage of the current inflationary period to take advantage of its customers. Imagine you order two lox bagel sandwiches, a coffee and a tiny 6oz orange juice and you end up paying $40! That is what happened, and they don't even give you plates or silverware, just a paper bag that you then take to one of the tables and eat right out of the bag like it's summer camp. No waiter service, nothing! Their lox sandwich is $15! (And that's for a pretty average sandwich), as a comparison in nearby New York Bagel and Bialy a similar lox sandwich (but with more fillings) is $7.89! Each table comes equip with a toaster and fun artwork which you can purchase. Service was very friendly but orders can sometimes take a bit of time to come out. What a great brunch spot in Lincoln Square. You can order at the counter to go or stay and eat. I think this help keeps the wait down on the weekends. They have a wide variety of dishes that are relatively healthy. Last time I had the lox plate and it was a huge portion and very reasonably priced. They also make a ton of baked goods in house. The sourdough cinnamon roll is amazinggggg. Great food and a short wait for brunch in Chicago... what more could you want! read more

The GM could not have been ruder or more abrasive. Wasn't the least bit kind or apologetic and started criticizing my request and suggesting that I was "devaluing" their food. Used to be so great. Pros: Pies and pastries are good. Definitely better to do the walk up window than dining in. Cons: Expensive. The prices and food quality don't match. Portions are big but not of a high quality. I got chilaquiles the last time I went and it was $20 for a plate of uncooked Trader Joe's tortilla chips topped with cold veggies and eggs. Their prices are high to pay their servers a fair wage, which I totally support. But since you have to order yourself, the servers just bring your food out. They can't answer questions or give recommendations when you're ordering. And that combined with the super confusing digital menu makes for a bad experience. Advice: Find more balance in your menu and only offer food you can do really well (again those cold chilaquiles haunt me). Lower prices AND portions. Let your lovely servers actually serve for a better dine in experience.. you have great servers! Fix the online menu so it's not so confusing. Each dish should have its own section versus piling everything into general categories (like brunch food or all drinks in one spot). read more

But when I reached out to them they made every effort to make it right and I was very satisfied by the great customer service. Ugh. Ordered an egg/cheese bagel sandwich - the eggs are powdered eggs like at a Holiday Inn continental breakfast. And they forgot the cheese, even though they charged $1.99 for it. The KISS bagel sandwich was ok except for the overripe (almost spoiled) avocado they put on it. It was mush. Can't believe they would serve it to customers; had to just eat the side without it. Wanted to try a different spot for brunch so this was the one that I chose. Small, intimate spot, kinda old school, decent decor, looks clean. Nice cashier/order taker. Odd setup: u place order, then they give u a buzzer when ready, then u pick up from counter. Why leave a tip then? I did anyway, me being nice and hoping the food was good, which it was. I tried the veggie hash which was a decent size, no leftovers here, and rather tasty. The coffee was good and my hub stated the orange juice was freshly made. The vibe was relaxing, chill. I recommend if u want something light and different from your normal spot. Though I paid $31 with no to go containers, it can strain someone on a budget. I could have stayed here all day! The pastries, coffee, casual atmosphere - this is a very high quality bakery/hangout. I kept it simple and got a handpie and iced coffee (50cent refills!) - the handpie was lovely, especially when smothered with the plethora of delicious free spreads! You have to go here at least to try the spreads. On my second visit, I got this incredible sourdough cinnamon roll - a great treat to take home and heat in the microwave. read more
