I was going to head over to the other Japanese place over on Steinway St, but found it had closed... in desperate search for sushi in the area, I saw Bai on Broadway and beelined for it. They had a decent lunch special (two rolls with miso for $8-ish), and it served its purpose. The food came out quickly, and it was your average good sushi -- however, I have to say, the salmon roll was much tastier than most I've had for some reason. The fish was just so fresh and soft. The waittress and the sushi guy were nice, and nothing to write home on decor regarding this small little restaurant. I got what I came for, and left satisfied. read more

My two Astorian buddies dragged me here tonight. I've passed it many times, but this was my first time eating here. First thought - bustling takeout business. Good for them! Second, the place lacks charm, but it's super clean and well-kept. Seemingly short-staffed (I counted only three employees), but they get the job done. The food - overall, fantastic! Seaweed salad is fresh and balanced. Miso is slightly above average (but could've used a bit more salt). I had the bento dinner box. Everything was great. Only two small issues. First, the "green salad" was simply iceberg lettuce. Second, the terryaki (i had shrimp) left much to be desired. Otherwise, it's a great deal. My dining buddies both had a few types of roles. The Bai role is EXCELLENT. Lastly, red bean fried ice cream is a MUST. MUST MUST I say. $62 total for the three of us and we were all happy and full. The fish was fresh, I can't necessarily complain about that, but the rolls (in particular the Titanic Roll) was small and poorly made, it would fall apart the second I picked it up. I also ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Dinner Bento Box, which was at most just okay. It comes with miso soup, salad (mostly lettuce), 3 pieces of shrimp tempura (small, and by the time it reached me, very soggy), a California Roll (6 pieces, but each individual pieces is tiny), and teriyaki chicken and rice (the sauce was probably factory made, not bad, but not good either). I am happy to have tried the food here, but will not be back. read more

Stopped by Bai Sushi since the dirt cheap lunch specials lured me in. $6 for two 8 piece rolls and a soup or salad! Upon entering, I was a bit hesitant since the place was totally empty at 1pm and small - with 6 to 8 tables. But the super friendly waitress greeted me and I decided to give it a shot. I had the California roll and salmon roll. They were okay- nothing special. The rolls were oddly shaped though with too much rice. Turn a piece over to find that the stuffing in the middle wasn't as long as the rice portion. Never got around to drinking the miso soup but didnt see much seaweed or tofu in it. read more

Amongst most sushi joints, Bai Sushi is no different from their competitors. Providing the same generic rolls, sashimi and entrees, the prices are extremely reasonable and more often than not tend to stray lower than standard. So with all this being said, my decision to rate Bai Sushi so highly solely comes from the quality and taste of their food. It is undeniable that their signiture rolls do not disappoint and personally easily make up for the double digit pricing. Ordered the rock shrimp and the shrimp are tiny and the tempura covering is massive. Thought I was getting regular size shrimp but when I took some of the tempura off, I found baby shrimp. My brother disliked his chicken teriyaki. I ordered the sashimi and got imitation crab as part of the sashimi as well as octopus. I didn't mind the octopus as much as the imitation crab. The sushi chef Jon (I think thats how its spelled, he pronounces it more like Joan) is very pleasant and nice. I chatted him up about his coming from Korea, the different rolls and nigiri he was making etc. and by the end of the conversation he was "practicing" his newly learned appetizers on me. At no charge. Score. Bai isnt the best sushi, the best atmosphere... the best anything. However, there is something hugely likable, comfortable, and enjoyable about it. I love this place. It's small, It's mighty, it serves good food at great lunch special prices. I don't like spending too much on sushi. I mean, i know it's art and all, but they don't have to cook it! That lowers the overhead which is why I refuse to spend $9 on a single roll(but I have had a bite of the expensive rolls and they are delish!) I love the seaweed salad, spicy tuna rolls and the chef special lunch box! When I get off at the Steinway stop and am tired and hungry, this is the place I go to for good sushi. The quality is superior to some of the nearby places (like Go Wasabi). It's not particularly fancy, but well-done and fresh, and it's always the same Korean chef making the sushi so you can expect the same more or less each time. There are some good deals on the menu if you look. Bai is tiny: it has 7 tables (3 two person tables) and several stools at the sushi bar. There is one very capable waitress that never seems to take a break. Bai is basically a "mom and pop" kind of sushi place. Probably as far as sushi places go, it's a 3.5-4 star place, but because of the comfort level I have at the place (it's a very casual, friendly place) and the inevitable idiot who has one bad experience and loses all objectivity in writing a review, I'm giving 5 stars. I have been to japan twice and eaten at the fish markets through Europe and Asia. My husband and I found this place 10 years ago when we first moved to Astoria. We live in Wiliamsburg now but still REGULARLY drive out to this place to enjoy what i call "My favorite sushi outside of Japan'. Guys, I have eaten at Nagazawa, Sora and a handful of other incredible places, and of course when you pay 100-300 a tasting menu you will get out of this world sushi. But in regular local sushi places the quality of the fish and the cooked dishes is dull and unfinished. However this place is incredible, its the best quality out of any local sushi place I have ever had. Try the cooked dishes too- they are amazing! read more

This place is okay for Americanized sushi. Since my first visit the fish isn't the freshest or best textured or tasting. Either it has declined in quality or my taste has evolved. Maybe a bit of both. Stick to the classic items like a spicy tuna roll and a Miso soup lunch special. Seems like that's what they do best. I'd avoid the Yaki noodles, they are flavorless and barely come with any meat. We had high hopes for bai sushi, but they seriously let us down. We've never experienced such low quality food anywhere else and we've eaten at some very bad places. The salmon was probably expired and I had to spit my food out in a napkin because I just couldn't swallow it. The waitress did not come unless we begged for her to come over. On a rainy Monday,coming back from Garden City for a hearing and on the way to Manhattan for another one, we decided to have lunch first before driving to the city. Bai is about ten blocks away from where I live so instead of going home, we grabbed the first parking spot we saw which was half a block away from Bai. We ordered scallops and beef, both of which came in a bento box with sushi, salad and rice. Actually, Bai has been in the neighborhood for some time (about eight years) and is great for a quiet and simple dinner. I remember ordering dragon roll here a few dinners back and really liked the crispiness of the crab and the freshness of the avocado and other ingredients. What Bai lacks in charm (as another Yelper pointed out) it makes up for efficient and dependable service, not to mention that it is one of the cleanest sushi/Japanese places I've been to. read more
