Baja Fresh is the Wish.com Chipotle. We needed a quick lunch on our road trip to LA, and Baja Fresh was... there. The sole employee was very kind and helpful, but the food was not so stellar. They don't have Impossible Meat because it's an "Express" version of the establishment. Big bummer because that's what I wanted to order. So I opted for the veggie burrito. Everything inside the burrito was cold. Not flavorful. I couldn't really detect the guacamole or cheese. Friendly staff, I like that they put a lot of effort into wrapping the burritos. I know this sounds trivial, but they took their time and stuffed the burrito which is more than a lot of other places do. The burrito wasn't the fanciest or tastiest thing I've ever had, but it's one of the healthier alternatives from the other restaurants at this rest stop. We came at the end of the day so they were running low on a lot of ingredients, but they still had all the toppings I wanted and my burrito was pretty big! I order chicken bowl they put just rice, beans, chicken, and veggies. They don't put any sauce any cream nothing in that and my second item is steak Diablo Burrito They do the same thing with this. I ask them to give me a sour cream. They told me we charge extra money for that. I ready to pay. They just give me the cream. The amount of the cream is just the one teaspoon they do not give me any extra sauce with it nothing . His food is so expensive but the quality is so cheap. Stopped in for a quick bite on my way to Sacramento from L.A. I have never eaten at a Baja Fresh. Interestingly, I was offered a job with them MANY Years ago, when they were in their infancy. I decided against it. Don't know why I have never tried their food in so many years. I was greeted and served by Herminia. She prepared my Baja Pork Carnitas Bowl. She gave me my choice of sauces and I chose hot. I ordered a large soda as well. When she was going to charge me I was told that she had large cups but no lids. If I wanted a soda with a lid, I would have to go over to the adjoining place and buy it from them. I didn't feel like going through that at the time, so decided against the beverage. I went outside and sat in my car and enjoyed my carnitas bowl with black beans. It has Baja rice, black or pinto beans, roasted veggies, salsa verde, onion & cilantro mix. The meat was properly cooked and flavorful. Many times pork is overcooked, not this time. The rest of the ingredients were fresh, colorful and tasty. My only comment would be that it was heavy on the green peppers - of which I am not particularly fond. She offered my choice of sauces and I chose hot. Naturally, their idea of hot and mine aren't very close. It was good - but I would not call it hot. Overall it was good. I would go again. read more

This is my favorite Baja Fresh location. It is on Jayne Avenue, exit 325, off Interstate-5. The staff here is very friendly. The food never disappoints. It is the perfect mid-way point between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Eating anywhere else during the trip makes me feel guilty and unhealthy. This Baja Fresh serves fresh and nutritious food. There is also a gas station, so you can fill-up and eat on the same stop. read more

I have to give this place a 3 becuase even though the man working got pretty much everything wrong with my order he was trying so hard! First i tried to order fish tacos and he responded with "I can try but I've never made them before. Would you possibly like anything else?" So I went with a taquito combo. He served me my taquitos but forgot the combo part. After I reminded him he gave me my rice and beans and an extra tacquito. My nephew ordered a burrito. I forgot exactly what it was but after telling the man exactly what he wanted several times, he still got it wrong and had to remake it after we got our order. On our way to South Lake Tahoe, my friend and I were hungry for lunch and started Yelping places to stop, albeit there were not many options, and most of them ranked 2 stars or less which usually automatically blacklists that option for me. All the fast food places sounded horrible, so we decided on Baja "Fresh" (note, it was not) hoping we would be on the safe side. Unbeknownst to us, this location is inside a gas station/convenience store. Inside, we browsed the menu as well as a couple of Yelp reviews, noting that more than one patron had allegedly contracted food poisoning from there, so meat was out of the question. We both settled on a veggie tacos. The woman who took our order already had disposable gloves on when we entered, and they were not changed prior to her grabbing a handful of soggy veggies, and throwing them on the grimy grill littered with leftover bits of meat and whatever else. Once our tacos were ready, the same woman that just handled our food also took our cash and operated the cash register in the same pair of disposable gloves. Did she swap them out for a fresh pair prior to making the next person's food? We'll never know... I ate one of the two tacos I ordered and decided not to eat the second one, as the bell peppers had a weird taste to them and were laden with oil and charred bits from the grill. Fortunately, neither of us got sick. 10/10 would NOT recommend. Find somewhere else or better yet, pack your own lunch for this dreaded stretch of highway. read more

Overpriced for the portions and slow service. We stop at this location for gas often on our trips to San Diego and LA. This Baja Fresh is part of a gas/convenience store we like. Not really sure why the ratings are so low. Sure, the ambience and location isn't so great, but it sure beats the next fast food chain in the area off the 5. I'll have to admit pulling into the parking lot, we had our doubts - the place looked sketch. But I'm glad as we left fairly quickly with our bellies filled. Not usually a big fan of Baja, but this hit the spot after a long drive. Carnitas were a bit salty, but very tender. I felt contaminated the second I walked into this location but I was really desperate and hungry and out of gas and had no choice but to order from here. I was on the way down to LA and I saw a sign for Baja Fresh on the 5 and decided to go here - I frequent Baja Fresh in the Bay Area, and I find this to be a normal chain, but the Coalinga location proved me wrong. Firstly, the way they make their burritos is SO odd. They put the cheese on the tortilla and fold it in half like a quesadilla and then grill it. Then they open it up again and stuff it with the rest of the burrito stuffing... what is that??? Usually you just grill the tortilla first and then put the cheese + stuffing inside of it. I was so baffled. Secondly, I don't think they are very sanitary here. They barely clean the stoves between burritos so if you're vegetarian, your stuff might be cooked on the same grill as beef, fish, etc. Thirdly, their service sucks. Big time. I waited 25 minutes just to order my veggie burrito, and there are 2-3 people working and all of them aren't even in proper uniform. Highly unprofessional. Lastly, when I asked the woman for extra plate at the end, she sounded/looked so irritated with me. Terrible customer service. I'm never going back here. Worst Baja Fresh I have ever been to. The travel center had roach motels near the doors and God only knows what else. The grill looked liked it had not been cleaned since 1985. This is the most disgusting Baja Fresh I have ever been to. I walked in and decided not to order anything, despite being starving. My daughter followed suit but my husband and son ordered burritos. As I watched the man make the burrito, it was the most bizarre process ever. First, the grilled the tortilla and cheese, folded in half, like a quesadilla - the outside of the tortilla became very brown and crispy. Then, he opened the tortilla, threw a bunch of crap in it and rolled it up like a burrito. But the tortilla was all crispy and didn't roll up well. The only thing more depressing than driving I-5 between San Francisco and Los Angeles is having to stop and eat at one of the poor excuses for a restaurant along the way. Thinking that we'd finally found our answer to constantly packing nut-butter sandwiches, we stopped at this Baja Fresh in Coalinga - so close to the source of their meat that you can smell the manure. The best thing you can say about this place is that it isn't Denny's. It's located within a Shell station's mega-mart. Nothing like a display of impulse-buy 10W-40 oil to fire up the 'ol appetite while waiting for our food to be prepared. You order at the Baja Fresh counter, but have to venture in to the Shell mega mart to fill your drinks at their fountain. Want water? You have to go the gas counter and get little cups from that guy, because the Baja Fresh guy doesn't have them. Already stood in one line at Baja Fresh before coming over to the Shell line to get the little cups? Enjoy the time on your feet, you'll be back on your ass in the car soon enough. I'd rate this place higher for takeout if it weren't such horrible food to eat in a moving vehicle. The only way to really enjoy Baja Fresh is to sit down and grub, and even though in Coalinga the view inside a gas station is better than the view outside it, I'd prefer day-old nut-butter sandwiches to this experience ever again. read more

I know the area and I know exactly where she's from... from a place called ***** where people have NO education and sits and talk or text all day. here was my 2nd experience (the first one was just as bad): My brother and I go to the counter and wait for someone to greet us or take our order... 2 minutes later, a guy gets our order and we ask him if we can trade one of our sides for something else, he asks the manager... the manager (Maria) was standing there next to the register, texting... TEXTING! The poor guy was waiting for her answer since he couldn't continue with our order till it was answered.... so my brother and I (were rude) and started to talk about going to In N Out, only a 15-30 mins drive south on the 5, just to hint that there was bad service here. Should've been more clear. 3 minutes later: We finish our order, get our food (please don't eat here... it's NOT fresh) and sit down... I paid $14 for THIS?! I think.... and whats worse. I had to go back to the manager and ask her for the chips that came with our meal. She looked taken aback when I ask her, and I was like, yes, we do get chips with our meal, well, at least 6 other locations that I've visited gave me chips. So she gave me the chips. RE. Tard. OMG! I can't help diss this place because it was THAT BAD of an EXPERIENCE! My brother who's really a cool, nice guy was getting irritated. If it weren't for my family waiting, I would've gave them the "manager" a piece of my mind. But I was really cold and clipped with my responses to give her a hint that she SUCKED. This place was great, I'm not sure what was going on for some of the other reviewers, but my husband and I were pleasantly surprised. The stop was convenient, right off I-5, the gas prices were fair, and my chicken burrito was fantastic! They put the pico de gallo on the flattop so it was all roasty and didn't make my burrito soggy. The chicken was great, the guac was solid, and they had a clean bathroom and peanut M&Ms all in one place! PLUS, you can drink beer here! There was also a grass strip for the dog to visit before we hit the road again. Our only complaint was that they were out of the roasted veges, but we didn't even miss them. Also, the "hot" salsa wasn't very spicy, but the flavor was good. This is definitely an underrated location. read more

Kind of surprised by some of the one star reviews... This is not a separate, dedicated Baja Fresh. They have a small corner in a truck stop. Having said that, they still have an extensive menu. The location is perfect for those driving between LA and SF. Most places in the middle of nowhere give you zero options on what to eat other than Doritos and gross hot dogs. Here, you can get things actually healthy and good. Rice, black beans, grilled chicken or fish... I had the Baja Bowl (black beans of course) with the grilled Wahoo fish. They grill the fish fresh, which is nice. Mine was actually quite delicious. My husband and pal got a chicken burrito and a chicken Baja bowl which they said were good. Not great, but not awful. Finally stopped at this Baja Fresh on a trip between the Bay Area and LA after seeing the sign on the freeway several times and never quite timing it right to stop here. I was looking forward to a change from the standard Highway 5 fast food fare, but I didn't like the experience and I'm not sure about the food. It's been years since I ate Baja Fresh food on any type of regular basis so I don't know if the regular restaurants are better than this, but I wasn't into it. I guess it's good that it's not sit-down, so you don't waste too much time there and you get right back on the road, but I wasn't really on that wavelength when I went. Even worse, this is the conversation in the car after we left: Me (glum): I didn't realize it was just a counter in a convenience store. I thought it was going to be a sit-down Baja Fresh restaurant. BF: All the Yelp reviews said it was going to be like this. Me: Why didn't you tell me that before we came? BF: I didn't want to ruin the experience for you. It's not very good, but the remarkable thing is the boss man. I think he runs the gas station, convenience mart and baja fresh (which are all combined, really), and he runs them WITH AN IRON FIST! I've never seen a boss so willing to insult and berate his employees in front of the customers. Upon entering, before my eyes had even adjusted to the dimmer light in the place, I heard the great Central Valley tyrant yelling at one of the unfortunate workers for not attending to me quickly enough. And throughout my visit (which was not quick or enjoyable), the guy continued to correct, criticize and complain to the point where all the customers were pretty uncomfortable. Why would this guy be like this? I guess it might show the clients that he knows they're not the hardest working, most skillful or smartest folks, but Mr Meanboss doesn't consider the fact that everyone knows that he hired them!
