First off, $7 for chips and salsa? Can't make a blended night non-alcoholic strawberry margarita? No rice and beans in the restaurant? Baja Haus was off to a horrible start to meet my Mexican expectations. However, the tempura fish tacos, steak tacos, and Mexican corn were very tasty. If you are looking for value and traditional Mexican flavors, probably go somewhere else. But if you're looking for average food that is overpriced Americanized Mexican, this is your place. We were just at Baja Haus last night and thought it was absolutely super. The food is made 100% fresh from scratch and it tastes like it. The level of flavors in the offerings we had made each bite a treat. I know that sounds extreme but it's true. We started out with the chips and queso then moved on to tacos - the Chicken Tinga and the Fried Avocado tacos. Both had garnishes and sauces that worked. For dessert we had the Tres Leches cake - absolutely decadent. As we were sitting at the bar we were able to chit chat with others sharing our space so, having a great time visiting, we weren't ready to leave and capped the night off with this incredible milk punch. Sounds like something I would normally not have but, seriously, you do have to try it. Homemade and delicious. While some have commented on the brightness of the space, we felt the decor and lighting really helped define the concept giving it a fresh, south of the border, seaside vibe. The seating allows for as much privacy or socializing as you might want to partake in while enjoying the menu which has a good selection of dishes for both meat-lovers and vegetarians. Wonderful restaurant! The atmosphere was great and I loved the decor. Even though it was -10 outside, it felt like we were in a beach town! We had a reservation for 8 people on a Friday night. It was pretty crowded and got busier as the night went on. To start, we ordered the salsa trio and queso. All the salsas were sooo good and flavorful. The queso was some of the best we've had. My only complaint is that chips don't come with the dips- you have to order them separately and they're not cheap. We ended up having to get 4 orders for our table, which was $20 just for chips! Between all of us, we ordered the Baja Caesar (super good!), the guac tostada (some of the freshest guacamole I've ever had in my life), and then grilled steak tacos and grilled fish tacos. Both of the tacos were fabulous. We didn't have an ounce of food left at the end! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone and everyone looking for fresh, flavorful Mexican food. Bizarrely, our prior review was taken down and replaced by a 5 star review. Here's our absolutely terrible experience (again): - We ordered queso, guacamole and the salsa trio and asked for "enough chips for all the dips" because prior experiences gave you LITERALLY 8 chips (we counted; this was our 3rd time there) for $5 for each dip -- they brought us a bowl. We got about a half an avocado worth of guac, absolutely mediocre salsas and an actually quite nice queso ... wait for the punchline on this one in a minute - We split three orders of tacos (steak, tuna and fried fish) -- they were absolutely terrible, dry, bland and flavorless tacos -- and when you're only getting 2 for $15-16, they should be much better ... further, when we said they weren't good our waitress said "I'll let you guys work on them a little longer" - A random guy walks over to our table, swaying and picks up our bowl of chips and looks at us ... we said "Hi." He just stood there holding the bowl. We had no idea who he was, we said, "we wish there was more sauce" thinking it was just a random bar patron ... and he threw the bowl into the middle of the table ... seriously ... and walked away. Wait, this guy comes back ... - I got the steak with the tomatoes and chimichurri ... this was REALLY good! - Bill comes after a really disappointing meal ... and they charged us $30 for 2.5 orders of chips, salsa and guacamole. We couldn't believe it. The waitress came over and we actually said something (which we never do) ... and said, really? $13 for chips alone? And 3 bites of guac. She starts negotiating with us to take $3 off the bill. And we just said, no, that's not the point ... it's just nickel and diming us when the overall food wasn't good. You need to fix this because nobody goes to a Mexican restaurant to pay $30 for chips and salsa. - Suddenly random swaying guy comes back and just stands over my shoulder mumbling. Finally he gets out "what's the problem here." We just said that we're not complainers but this is an obscene amount of money for what we had, and when we mentioned that the tacos weren't particularly good he became visibly really irritated. We finally asked him who he was if he was a manager. He said, "owner" and then "let me be arrogant here. All of my food is fresh and healthy. Do you hear me. I own Sushi Fix. And I charge what I want because my food is fresh and healthy." This was truly bizarre. We said, "Ok, we're just questioning why you charge so much for the chips and salsa and why when we said that our food wasn't good we were told to just 'work on it a little longer.'" Then another manager came over and owner slaps him on the back "THIS is my partner in crime." So this manager asked us what was wrong (we now have 3 people hovering over our table making a scene when we weren't really even complaining in the first place. We told him the same story. He said that he'd take care of it -- seemed generally engaged and helpful. At which point the owner is mumbling and finally yells at our table "just FORGET IT. Ok, forget it." and stumbles back to the bar. The manager sort of awkwardly hovered / stood back. The waitress returned with $3 off our bill -- at which point we told them that while big foodies and regulars in Wayzata restaurants, we wouldn't be back. Then paid and walked out only to see the owner wrestling and rough-housing with 4 or 5 guys at the bar. Note to the owner and "partner in crime": there is a reason that every restaurant / bar on Lake Street is absolutely packed and standing room only on a Thursay and you're completely empty. This was the most absolutely abhorrent experience and behavior from a management team I have ever experienced. And it's on the back of completely terrible, over-priced food. So unfortunate, so, SO bizarre! read more

Completely overpriced and food was bland. Shared three different tacos and each were extremely small, dry and lacked flavor. Fun & festive spot with great food in Wayzata. A bit loud and I didn't love the banquette seating but a really nice place overall. We had the fish tacos and Caesar salad with shrimp, which were so flavorful and really good. The jicama salad was ok and a bit overpriced but the quality of the food here is outstanding. Next time we'll try the diver scallops (@ $36, a bit pricey) and the ceviche. Oh - we had great service too. We will be back. read more

Just had a great date night dinner here. We live in the area so are accustomed to Wayzata prices, and, yes, it is expensive -- but no more so than any of the other choices. More importantly, as a Mexican food snob, I found the food superb and memorable. We had two fantastic cocktails each, the Tuna Ceviche, the yuca, the steak tacos and the shrimp tacos. Plenty of food for two of us. The shrimp tacos were a flavor explosion and the corn tortillas tasted so fresh. I'm sure Rick Bayless himself would be impressed. We had fantastic service. It is loud and I agree it could handle some noise dampening. But it is also very casual which is nice since I didn't feel like getting dolled up. Also the baseball team that came in at 8:00 on a Friday fit right in. You have to love that. read more

Very engaging, warm service, and a comfortable dining environment, but the food is a little hit or miss. Guacamole, queso and chips are good, as you'd expect (if a beach-themed Mexican place can't get those right, it would be cause for concern). The poke was fun, too. I'm not sure all the flavors were in sync, but it was still enjoyable to eat. Scallops were great -- the best thing we ate -- but were accompanied by a pretty unremarkable mash of some kind. Perhaps if the restaurant had salt on the table, I could have brought it up to speed. The mole enchiladas were, sadly, a fail -- with a mushy undifferentiated pork filling that tasted as though it had been prepared far in advance. The accompanying rice and beans had no character either. Desserts were nice, though -- both the chocolate cake and the tres leches cake had pleasing flavor profiles. One thing that's a little weird about this place: The near-pornographic images of women in the men's room seem out of place in our changing culture. Maybe if they had more wit or character to them, they'd work better. They didn't strike me as offensive, but they were hardly titillating or provocative in the "edgy" way intended. My dining companion told me that the women's room is adorned with similar shots of scantily-clad men, so at least there's some equity there. You know what would have been better? If they'd sprinkled some photos of hot guys into the men's room mix, and added a few ladies into the women's room photos. read more

Really wanted to try this restaurant based on a recommendation. So we started out with the crispy cheese roll which comes with the sauces spread on the plate. We thought it would be a unique first course to try and that it was. The roll was like a crispy piece of cardboard with sauces to dip it in that were so spicy and bitter (think of sprinkling Chipotle pepper on your tongue right from the spice jar) that we couldn't eat it. I ordered the Mango margarita, which is a signature drink for them and I thought it was just 'okay', not a wow experience. Then we tried the grilled fish tacos. The fish itself was tasty but the sauce was so overwhelmingly spicy that I could barely taste any other flavor. I love hot, spicy foods but this was ridiculous. We sat at the bar and I will say that the service was excellent though. read more

I ate here the other night with my wife and the experience was ok. The decor was ok...a southern california vibe....food was ok (ceviche was good)....location is in the mall on the east side of town.....but the wheels fell off the bus when it came to the food/price/decor/location combination. Very disconnected. Entrees in the mid-low 30's are appropriate for finer dinning like COV/Belcour/6smith, not here. Tacos in the low/mid teens....makes you feel like they are trying to take advantage. This place should be a lunch fish taco spot or a casual eatery like lagos in excelsior. Had heard it was good but overpriced - and that proved to be true. Great décor and atmosphere and the food was vey good. Tempura Fish Tacos were excellent. There were 4 of us and we got the Yucca an Roasted Corn as sides to share. Flavor of the sides was great, but the quantity of each was not enough for one person, let alone four. The corn was about 4 tablespoons on a long narrow platter - what killed the whole experience (and why we will not go back) is the 4 tablespoons of corn was $9! Seriously? Their cost on that corn had to be 35 cents. I don't like getting ripped off. Short sighted on their part, as I predict they won't have a lot of repeat customers. Great seafood and best bartenders in west metro. True Caribbean style with a tip of the cap to The Blue Point, one of the classic Wayzata eateries that sadly has passed. Best margarita anywhere if you enjoy it tart on the rocks. read more
