Beer prices for a Yuengling draft was pricey at $6 compared to a Craft beer at $6. Not running back. I really was looking forward to dining at Baja. I wanted some seafood. The menu needs a fish dinner. I settled for the $23 Seafood Au Gratin. It was like flavorless generic canned mushroom soup with a couple medium shrimp and maybe 2 small scallops. It came in a somewhat small to medium skinny bowl similar to a medium sized gravy boat I was disappointed. Then there was a small hair on the inside rim of the bowl poking into the soup. I pulled it out and I'm ashamed to say, ate the concoction. I should have sent it back and gotten something else. Like the Mahi bites they looked ok, like something you'd buy frozen from Costco and pop in the oven. The bright spot was our waitress. She was on point and very friendly. If you like weak overpriced drinks at a bar with no bar stools and no air conditioning this is the place for you. Every time you need a drink you have to stand in a line to order from one bartender. We come here every year while on family vacation in Sandbridge. We come for breakfast, dinner and drinks at least twice a week while on vacation. The outdoor bar is my favorite spot. The view is absolutely amazing. Tonight we had the sesame seared tuna and steamed oysters, both were delicious. More impressive than the food is the service. The staff here makes this place feel like a home away from home every though we live 12 hours away. The bartenders are always patient and friendly no matter how busy it is. Our server tonight, Kylie, was especially good- she was friendly, helpful, and super personable. This place is a must visit if you're in the Sandbridge area- I'm sure it will be your new favorite spot. read more

Temper expectations here. Food is average at best and place is full of flies. I guess that's to be expected since it's indoor/outdoor however. Where/how they serve the food is bizarre. Had some seats in the bar where you could order full menu and others where you could only order Pizza, literally like 2 tables over. Something to do with the "coffee shop". The coffee shop is attached to the restaurant and you can order drinks. It's also open in the morning before the restaurant opens and they serve breakfast. Coffee options are very basic so don't expect Starbuck options here. Offered breakfast and some pastries. Went for the cinnamon roll and they had sold out. Got the OG Smoothie bowl. Completely melted - they response "well it's warm out here". Was obvious they had premade them and they had been sitting around awhile. Like drinking syrup. Had some breakfast sandwiches but oddly enough they were all priced wrong on the menu and were $2 or $3 more dollars when u went to check out. Never got an itemized check but tax also seemed high, maybe a pre built in tip or some type of service charge. . Maybe they recently changed the prices, but who knows it was annoying regardless. Staff was friendly overall. All in all an ok spot that will work in a pinch given there are very few food and drinking options down this way, but I will probably avoid this spot moving forward. If a restaurant can't provide a decent dining experience or a the very least good food, they get only 1 star anymore, I no longer give 2, 3 or 4 stars, I work hard for my money and so does everyone else, time to put crappy restaurants out of business with Yelp. A real lack lustre experience, when we walked in the restaurant was really hot, would have made sense at 1 in the afternoon, but this was 6:30 in the evening, it was so hot, another customer nearly passed out and they called an ambulance, another cheap ass manager, turn the damn a.c on! Our waitress took our orders, from that point on she never asked us how our food was, if we needed anything, nothing. We ordered steamed shrimp and I got the crab soup, both really good apps. Our main meal arrived, this is where it all went to shit even further, my wife got crab cakes and I got seafood pasta, we both made the same comment when we started to eat, there is a real lack of flavor to the food, the Alfredo sauce on the pasta had zero flavor and the pasta was over cooked mushy. I looked for salt on the table, but non was found, flagged the waitress to get salt, again a waitress that says nothing. I dumped salt on the pasta in hopes to liven it up a little, nope, stilled sucked. Paid our bill and left, so what the hell is it with the restaurant's in Virginia Beach? I guess they figure we're just stupid tourists and they can serve shitty food and charge outrageous prices and it doesn't matter? I dont know about anyone else, but I work very hard for my money, when I'm handing over a hundred bucks for a meal, you damn well better provide a decent meal and service, its time for all Yelpers to stop with the 3 and 4 stars and simply 1 star for sub par and crappy food and 5 stars for good food. Start putting these restaurants out of business that think they can serve shitty food and get away with it. So last night, we headed down to Sandbridge to go kayaking at Little Island State Park. Fun, huh? But I'll have to review that later because the park canceled the trip due to "heavy wind". Ugh. So, we made the best of things and headed to the nearest bar, which happened to be Baja! We wandered right past the restaurant to the back deck which, as Joe D. said, is like a large screened porch... only there were no screens when we were there. Since it was "move-in day" (Sandbridge is home to a huge summer beach rental market) the bar was pretty empty. But we drank cheap domestic bear and watched a pretty cool sunset. The people watching was fun too - Some vacationers were taking group pictures in the yard and playing cornhole. Some local frat boys did an interpretive dance of a Styx song at the bar, but the pool table sat unused and lonely. I hear this place gets rocking during the week in vacation season. They have a dodgeball court for dodgeball night, a dollar taco night, often have local bands, etc. And frankly, from what I can tell, it's the only place to really let loose in that area, so I'll bet it gets really kickin' with vacationers during the week. The service was, well, I'd call it - "disinterested, we move at our own pace you're at the far end of the beach on a week night service". In other words, slow, BUT, if you slowed to their pace they became friendly and everyone was beachy cute. The pizza was a solid, "eh"... but that's the only food that they serve at the outside bar. I'd try it again on a real night. And if you're on vacation it's worth a try, and really fun if you can fit that dodgeball/frat/surf/dive/beachbum crowd. read more

Wasn't the best but was in the top five, I've ever had and I have had a lot. ( my old roommate was allergic to seafood so ANYTIME I was out I would order SEAFOOD) my husband had the coconut shrimp appetizers long with, Cup of she crab soup as our lite dinner. This time we saved room for dessert... I had chocolate cake - Amazing! My husband had the cheese cake!! Delicious! The waitress was able to keep a table of 7 people who all arrived at different times , each group wanted their own tab and food , straight and happy! This is a pretty good little restaurant / pub located on the very south end of Sandbridge. The restaurant proper is in the main building and it also includes a small bar and room with a pool table. There is a second bar out back that's basically a giant screened in porch for lack of a better description. When the rear bar is open during the spring & summer there's always a nice cool breeze from either Shipps Bay behind the place or one coming off the Atlantic on the other side of Sandpiper Road. They have lawn chairs, bands and all sorts of activities. Baja serves a little bit of everything with maybe a slight lean towards seafood. The menu while basic has everything from shell fish, burgers, ribs, tacos, pizza, etc. If you read my reviews, you know I went for the pizza. Pizza's here are offered in two sizes 12" and 14". Go for the 14" as it's definitely the better value. Tonight we had one with pepperoni and mushrooms. When the pie arrived I thought it looked a little under cooked, and in the center it seemed that way as well, however I think it was kinda soggy from the sauce more so than not leaving it in the oven long enough. The dough was fresh and the crust was light and chewy. This pie fits right in the middle. There's nothing spectacular about it that would make me want to come back week after week, at the same time it's a well built pizza that is tasty and gets the job done. If you're looking to do something a little different this spring, take a drive and head out to Sandbridge and try them out. I think you'll enjoy it. read more

We recently visited Baja with some friends and were highly impressed. We heard about Baja from a local and we're eager to try it out. We were seated promptly and the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. All of the food was very reasonably priced. We ended up ordering multiple appetizers and were not disappointed. Each item was DELICIOUS. We particularly loved the She Fries. The bowl of She Crab Soup was enormous and incredible. Very rich and creamy with tons of lump crab. What they call a cup is a bowl and what they call a bowl is a large bowl. Absolutely shareable. I don't think some of the previous reviews are an accurate representation of the experience this restaurant delivers. read more

No response, extremely rude, and incorrect information on website. I contacted Baja Grill looking for a place to host a small, informal brunch after my mother's burial in three months. I found their website which specifically says, "The perfect setting for your special day. Regardless of the theme, TIME OF YEAR, or size of your wedding." First I filled out a contact form online because the place does not open until dinner hours. No response after two weeks so I called. Spoke to the manager who was very helpful, took down information, and said could be done but needs to schedule through owner. I spoke to owner a couple days later after leaving a message with no response and he was very rude and abrupt and said no reservation could be done as no special events are scheduled during the summer. I explained the information on the website gives very different impression, and he said will not do it. And his manager gave a very different answer when we spoke, but he said absolutely not without even asking questions about what I was looking for. I understand small businesses and the time of year at the beach. But if you cannot host small events, don't advertise you can host small events. Especially as the lead page on your website. Which specifically says ANY TIME OF YEAR. And when a person calls inquiring about hosting a small event when your website advertises you host small events ANY TIME OF YEAR, don't get angry with the customer for your shortcomings and errors. read more

Came here because google reviews gave it a 4+ stars. So for starters we ordered the 1/2 pound shrimp which tasted like they were store bought frozen and had no flavor other than freezer burn and were definitely NOT "the freshest" as the sign states their seafood is. So after not finishing a 1/2 pound of shrimp between the two of us we ordered the Baja Shrimp tacos with rice and Baja Burrito with chicken and mashed potatoes since that was the potato of the evening. The Baja shrimp tacos were the only good thing we experienced tonight. The rice tasted like it was leftover from a couple of days prior and just dry with no flavor. The Baja burrito was a decent size but tasted like it was filled with rice a roni and she only barely ate 1/4 of it. It just had no flavor and the potatoes were cold and dry with no flavor as well. We ordered a thing of fries which were not terrible but not good either. The manager gave us a 6.60 discount on our meal which was nice I guess but this place was just terrible tonight. The server we had was really nice and polite so that was a plus but that's about it. read more

Here again I wish that yelp had a way of rating multiple items to come up with an aggregate score. The Baja is one of only a couple restaurants in Sandbridge. With that in mind I can tell you that it probably is the best restaurant in the Sanbridge community. If I had to rate this place on food alone, myself as well as the other eight people at our table (this most recent visit) would give it no better than two stars. Fortunately for this restaurant, we have to be fair in that while their food sucks, the overall experience (taking food out of the equation) probably ranks a 3-4 star rating Over the years the Baja has grown into what it is now, which is a fairly large restaurant, bar, outdoor eating and game area that attracts tourists and locals a like. With a formal lounge and family dining area in the original portion of the restaurant as well as the backyard with various yard games as well as a beautiful view of back bay, covered dining area, and backside beach bar complete with stage an area to dance it definitely has something to offer anybody as well as a family environment up until about 10 or 11 PM. The service here is generally friendly yet they are quite young and inexperienced so if you're looking for a Michelin star type of experience, this might not be your place As for the food, every time I come here I can honestly say the food is perhaps a little bit better than it was the last time, however I can assure you that it's nothing to write home about. About the only positive feedback I can offer on the food is that it's priced quite reasonably by any measures, but in particular when you think about being one of the only two restaurants in a tourist driven community. In summary, the best advice I can give would be if you're looking for a fun place to spend an evening that's family-friendly yet feels a little adult, this is a pretty good option so long as your food expectations are not set too high. Otherwise you should still come, just make sure you eat dinner before arriving. read more

Hubby ordered the arugula salad w shrimp. He was told it was grilled. It came with maybe 5 little quarter sized boiled shrimp for a $7 up charge! Baja used to rank high on my list of places to go in sandbridge. Ordered appetizers once seated at 830 and did not receive our food until almost 10pm. We got up, left and paid the bill still waiting on our food. Thankfully the manager reduced our bill, which was much appreciated. However we still waited 10 mins for them to provide our food to go. Once we got home we found the seared salmon to be undercooked and the side order of lime cilantro rice to be undercooked to the point where it was inedible. There were 5 of us, so we got to sample a variety. Fish tacos, Baja shrimp tacos, seared tuna, rockfish, queso dip and spring rolls were delicious. The restaurant as a whole gives off chic, modern, vibes. The building is well kept and clean. Our drinks were all good, but we agreed that their mojito was very impressive! I got the Baja burrito with steak, and absolutely loved it!!! The queso and salsa on top tasted so fresh, and I have no complaints. My dad got the shrimp tacos and said that he thoroughly enjoyed them, however he's had better. My mom got the coconut pecan shrimp, and reported that her meal was tasty, but nothing out of the ordinary. The fries that came with all of our meals were good, but nothing special.
